- Jack Rabbit at Kennywood is a 100 year old wooden roller coaster with a unique setting in a ravine. This was a revolutionary coaster designed by John Miller. It was one of the first rides to feature upstop wheels and the ride is still popular today thanks to the famous double dip.

the airtime on jack rabbit is nuts, you can hear the train go silent while going through the double down. he is not joking when your life is in the hands of a seatbelt
It's insane.
If you want an even better example of how insane the airtime is, go into the double decker pavilion behind the old mill and right next to the Jack Rabbit. Go into the bottom level and you get a clear view straight to the 2nd half of the double dip. Watch the back car's back wheels as it goes down and enjoy that 3 inch wheel gap.
I wonder what people thought back in 1920 when they were first introduced to such extreme ejector airtime on this thing. Thankfully it would pave the way for the airtime monsters we know today
Absolutely.
This thing was the cutting edge of coaster design in its day. The old scenic railways and the like usually had very gentle dips and low speeds, so even beyond the double down, even the modest by today’s standards speed and dips here must have really wowed riders when it first opened.
I love imagining this kind of thing too. KW posted a video on their
RUclips channel with a POV of Jack Rabbit filmed in the 1920s. You can see how much everyone is enjoying it!
When I rode this for the first I didn’t think it would have more than floater airtime and had my seatbelt all the way loose man was I surprised. Literally thought I was going to die for a second I was ejected higher than the seat back and I actually hit the seat back 😂 ride is insane especially for 100 year old coaster my gosh
It is a breathtakinge element.
John Miller is the real MVP
Absolutely!
Thank you Mister Miller!
He is a legend for the beginning of roller coasters
Agreed!
I’d heard of the double dip and was anticipating it and have to say it met and exceeded my expectations. As you said, experiencing that powerful of airtime with basically no restraint is heinous in the best way possible.
It's insane.
Great video, keep em coming! If I ever get out to Kennywood I'll definitely be riding this one!
As you should!
I love this coaster so much! Such a classic!
Agreed!
I grew up riding it. When I started riding other coasters, I would compare their air time with that of the double dip. The other coasters would loose.
Understandable.
The double down is indeed one of the best airtime moments of all time, but I still think some of the other drops have some faint floater. Thunderbolt is really inconsistent for me, so this is probably my favorite wooden coaster in the park.
I prefer Thunderbolt since the laterals on that ride always deliver.
World’s sixth oldest operating coaster. 🐇
It's a classic.
This ride is amazing.
The double dip is insane.
This looks like lots of fun! (Also, my sister goes to Pitt, so if I had the opportunity to visit her, I’d want to ride on this with her)
As you should!
This was my first coaster. I was 3 years old lol
What a first coaster!
@@CanobieCoaster it’s what started it all 😂
Same here, back when the height req was 36 inches.
I knew the double down was insane but when I rode it in 2018 I didn’t expect how insane it was
It catches everyone by surprise.
Same.
I’m a sucker for old wood coasters, I’m super exited to hop on this in a few years. The trains on it are also some of the lest vettle trains in existence,it’s an earlier design than the yellow and red trains that ran on clp blue streak
The trains are neat.
The double dip was the first ejector airtime moment, as before ejector was impossible without upstops.
Jack rabbit at Seabreeze opened the same year but to my knowledge it does not have ejector.
It has been a long time since I last rode the one at Seabreeze, but it had weak floater at best from what I remember.
Does anyone know which one is older? I know both opened in 1920, but it'd be interesting to know the exact day of both
Denmark’s Rutschebanen is older and it has some wild airtime - five or six moments of it! But still no one moment on Rutschebanen is as powerful as Jack Rabbit’s double dip.
@@jameslitwin5635 Most accounts say the Seabreeze one is older.
@@StamfordBridge that's what I've heard. Interesting.
Double-Dip, the Ride. I lucked into the back row on my first ride. That element was so good, I had to go for a 2nd ride, even though I had limited time on a busy Saturday.
The back row is always the way on this coaster.
I'm pretty sure that John Miller was just showing off when he built this.
Although racer runs with a different stock, Kudos to Kennywood for being smart and not ruining the experience for Jackrabbit by using Morgan rolling stock and still using the minimalistic Vettel stock. Thunderbolt has cool looking and rare and unique trains, even if it isn’t the original Vettel stock like jackrabbit’s.
I fear this may get more robust restraints one day, but I hope that doesn't happen.
@@CanobieCoaster It’s never had any major incidents, so there’s thankfully no real reason to.
I rode this yesterday with a friend who had only ridden 2 coasters before in his life and refused to get any other row than the third to last and the double down was still very powerful. Can only imagine in the back row.
It's epic in any row, but especially in back.
Nice
It is.
This ride can run three trains. The ride has four block zones. They are, load, which consists of the load station, block A, which consists of the turn out of the Station up until the crest of the lift Hill, block b, which consists of the turn off the lift Hill to the final brake run, then there is the unload block, which consists of the unload station
I believe I saw 3 trains pre-covid.
all the double dip
Absolutely!
Waited an hour and a half in 2017 for this.
Also in 2019 I rode it with my dad but he had the seatbelt really tight because "it wasn't safe" lol. Still good airtime tho
Wow that must have stretched quite a ways back.
@@CanobieCoaster yeah combined with KW's painfully slow dispatches it was quite brutal, not worth the wait haha
Take a drink every time he says, "no air time."
I don't want anyone to get alcohol poisoning lol
same designer as Roller Coaster at my home park, Lagoon. I live in utah.
Nice!
I don’t know where you heard that there were Ed Vettel trains from the 50s that now operate. That is completely incorrect. Andrew Vettal designed the trains and these are the original trains. Only the front was modified, as they made the small wall to replace some sort of fence.
Oh ok, thanks!
So can you do another coaster review on Kennywood's other landmark coaster like Racer or Thunderbolt.
I plan to review those 2 eventually.
If this coaster only had double downs it would be awesome
I wish it had more.
Have you been to Fantasiana to ride Wild Train?
I have not.
Jack Rabbit was so much better than Thunderbolt when I went to Kennywood…it’s a kickass coaster that is shockingly intense, but fun.
I like both.
Will you do Thunderbolt soon
I don't have plans in the next month, but I will at some point.
@@CanobieCoaster cool
I should know this but how many roller coasters have double downs I’m curious
Does rcdb list it?
@@CanobieCoaster not sure I’ll look
@@CanobieCoaster only two wooden coasters even though more obviously exist
Do you like all elements on Jack Rabbit at Kennywood?
The double down is the standout element.
I've mentioned before that I got sick on both this ride and Thunderbolt. I don't even know ow that's possible.
That's odd.
Probably the oil that Kennywood uses on the chains. It’s smell makes my mum sick.
@@CanobieCoaster My guess is that it had something to do with the sudden transition from fast to slow and back on those drops in the revene. It would explain why it happened on Gemini at Cedar Point as well. I think I should start taking motion sickness meds when I visit some of these parks from now on.
@@AmaranTheTauren That might also make sense. My father did ask me if I smelled gasoline at certain points. I didn't but he might've. After all, the two have very similar smells.
I didn’t
John *A* Miller.
Yes
How come Big Dipper at Blackpool is usually cited as the first use of up-stop wheels even though it opened in 1923, after Jack rabbit?
I'm not sure.
@@CanobieCoaster it feels like one of those things back before we had such an interconnected worldwide community, where things could easily be claimed as some kind of world record when really it's only locally noteworthy. Like how when Nemesis opened they claimed it was the world's first inverted coaster despite opening way after the first batman clones
I've not been to Kennywood, but I was surprised to prefer Grand National over The Big Dipper at Blackpool Pleasure Beach due to its double down drop I thought I'd like less than the biggest (the 2nd) drop of The Big Dipper. Since I've not yet been to Kennywood, how does Jackrabbit compare to Grand National? (I wish I could ask a better question, like how it compares to other wooden coaster in the same park, but it's best I go with what I already know, as long as it's at all relevant.) This looks like a great review! Thanks for posting!
Jack Rabbit has much less restrictive restraints than Grand National, so the double down has stronger and scarier airtime than Grand National. While Grand National is rougher, I prefer the quantity of airtime on that coaster.
Jack Rabbit at Kennywood originally opened in... 1929?
Earlier
This will probably seem very unlikely but could you see Jack Rabbit getting Titan track sometime, it is getting rough and it's over 100 years old and if it's still going to stay, it might need some upgrades right?
I don't think the layout is aggressive enough to necessitate it.
I felt like the double down wasn’t super strong, it was just great cuz there was no restraint
It's especially great with such little restraints, but it felt quite strong to me.
The double down is very shocking
Agreed!
Should Kennywood RMC racer
No, the ride is good as is.
Where is jack rabbit listed in your wooden coaster rankings
Towards the middle.
4:02-4:04 oop
There was an error pointed out and the best I could do was to trim it like that.
Well, technically, the double down is facing southeast, so you wouldn't really be able to get flung to Canada...
Oh fair point lol
I have autism and I try to like this coaster. But that double dip is too much for me. But I will ride the Racer and the Thunderbolt all day.
I like the double dip's power.
