  • Hey Everyone.
This is the last part of this Flemish Bond Extension, days 4 and 5.
I enjoyed doing this extension, i really like building with new techniques so this was a great learning curve for me. I think 5 days was a good amount of time to get this job done in, i felt like we reached our targets everyday and we had the weather on our side which always helps!
Drop in the comments what you think. :)
    Thanks for watching

Nice. Watched a bricklayer once who laid a flat bed and just placed the bricks which looked effortless.

tip, when doing oxford rub to perps and beds . go to nearest tree and select a branch with a y in it [ NOT TOO THICK] pull and snap branch leaving a tail of bark . use to rub joints. makes nice job.

Good job but you didn’t put wide damp proof course at the front of the catnic forming a cavity tray with plastic weep eyes before you lay the first row of bricks a long the catnic , the wide dpc lays on front of the catnic and gets bedded on the inner block , if the front gable brickwork gets saturated from the rain and soaks through the front brick work water runs down the behind the brick onto the catnic but it can’t escape anywhere hence the cavity tray with weep eye

Good work. However since you don't put vapor barrier of any kind over the blockwall you are covering in the UK. It is required else where in the world. Be aware of that if you ever come to North America for work. Keeps moisture from out side getting into interior living area. We don't really do Flemish Bond out here but did do it once or twice max in 46 years. Looks nice!

I see the other guys mentioned the flashing however we integrate it with vapor barrier on the block to make a weather proof envelope!

The bond coming from the house, should be header closer (to maintain the bond), you put in a three-quarter, which is considerably easier, but doesn't look great (in that corner & on reveals) brickwork is very good, not critisizing just outlining a point, your work is of a high standard for sure. No tray dpc.

I noticed you use a Stabila level. We use Smith or Crick levels over here, but I recently bought a 8 inch Stabila and am pretty happy with it.
I like your vids but wish you would slow a lot of it down to see what you are doing.

Most of is stabila over here. It is the go to level if you like.

Why window reveals don't have closures. Three quarters should be half then closure for true Flemish bond. Apart from that looks good

Buy a 2ft. Level and lower your foot plank. Really having a hard time watching bricklayers on the other side of the pond working harder not smarter . Do they sell 5ft. scaffolding over there? So much easier. You wouldn't have to set up the foot jump on the ground in the first place.
