First, great job on this video! You covered a lot of ground. My thoughts....as a GoPro12, 11, 10, etc. user. It's unfortunate both the batteries and the ND filters of the GoPro 13 are NOT backward compatible. I'm hugely invested into the GoPro ecosystem and this is a bit of a disappointment to me. Clearly, buying additional batteries and additional ND filters just for the GoPro13 increases my overall purchase price.
GoPro bright daylight action footage is superior. The thing is that most of my outdoor events, like running, biking, hiking, triathlon or skiing - start with pre-dawn, pre-event footage. I'd like improvements to low light for one camera to cover the day. A bit disappointed this year. But I'm still rolling with GoPro.
Nice walk-through! I might stick with the GP 11 for now though and wait for a better sensor. Also, did you get the beginning of the ND filter section wrong? With an ND filter you will get longer shutter times and more blur/problems with the stabilisation.
@@ChaseTheSummit Ok, I see. I bet it will be a compromise though. Might be good to set the shutter manually or use GoPro labs to limit how slow it can get.
I continue to use my GoPro 10 with additional enduro batteries with a charger and accessories. Everything that came out newer than 11, 12, 13 is just minor improvements (and in the case of 12, the lack of GPS is even worse). The quality of version 10 in most shooting scenarios is no different from any newer version. In the dark, all action cameras shoot terribly, they are not designed for this. Thanks for the review!
Here GoPro disappointed, this is just a new design, GPS and slightly better battery life. I don't understand why they do this?. Are they trying to dethrone themselves?Well I hope they sell well, we need GoPro. They have been leading, but not anymore. Unfortunately
I have been loyal with gopro since hero 8 but after watching this video I am tempted to buy chines product. I have waited for months for this and i am very disappointed. Now I don't know what to do cause i hate those chines products.
They continue to lead regardless… in June they sold their 50millionth camera so no other manufacturer comes close to that… I am disappointed the bitrate hasn’t increased in the 13 but the new nd filter system does look excellent…
It kind of attaches but it won't screw all of the way on and if you can get it to there's no "macro" setting in the camera so the image may look weird.
@@TVNetworld as mentioned you can't physically seat the lens all the way on the Hero 12 so it's not possible to use the lens. On top of that there's no macro setting in the camera either.
Damn dave you have had a week!!! Well done with all the uploads ! My question - i dont have an action camera but id like to have one I trail run, i rock climb and hike a ton If you had to choose one action camera out them all- DJI, GOPRO, INSTA whatever.. what would you choose? - and why
Ha yes! Busy! It's tough to choose an action camera with so many good options. The GoPro looks the best in "good light" in my opinion. It's got great colors resolution and dynamic range. The DJI Action and Insta Ace Pro look great in lower light situations. I think the DJI Action is a nice hybrid between the two.
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks for your reply! i agree about phones doing much better in low light. i'm itching to try a gopro hero 13 after your video. the new features are interesting. for my use case, runs and hikes, recording in low light is kind of a bad experience regardless of which action camera i use, so the sensor size is not a factor at all.
I don’t have a GoPro was waiting for 13 to come out. I believe it’s a great do it all option to start trying to make quality RUclips content similar to yours but it will definitely be a slow big learning curve for me and a massive anxiety to overcome posting videos. I’ll probably get the 13 due to GoPro wide selection of accessories and ease of use plus even if you spent 1,000 on go pro plus all lenses and other things it would still be 80% as good as a camera that cost 5x I believe anyways especially if you don’t get the camera settings right which for a newbie will be an extra learning curve. Anyways I feel this will be a good option I can make content can even use it as a high resolution webcam if needed.
I just subscribed, man. Great review! I already have the 12 black. I think I'm gonna keep it since they have the same sensor I wait for the bigger sensor great in low light. Thanks, man!
I owned action cams ages ago so kinda coming in new, I am thinking if its worth to get the hero 13, macro lens, tripod, and case. or just get the bundle hero 13. I feel i will get the 13 hero over the 12 hero. The macro does sound kind of good as a all in 1 lens when traveling.
I want a Narrow field of view option back (the last GoPro with it is the 10), and so far I only see it for 720p slomo in the one image I've seen so far. I also think a zoom lens that can do at least 2x zoom would be good, as it allows people to shoot content that's a bit farther away.
Should I return my hero12 for the 13? I just purchased the creator bundle 2 weeks ago and have until Monday to return it, Should I make the switch? I make trucking videos
I think the $199 camera is the better option based on all this. The extra lenses are cool, but idk if it's worth it. It seems a lot of this is software improvements. With how much cell camera has improved, and all the other options for small cameras GoPro needed to do more hardware improvements. I'd love to see more...
I had high hopes for the Hero 13, specifically that the camera sensor would be improved with something similar to the Ace Pro. I was ready to buy the 13 but I think I'll just stick with my Hero 10 until next year in hopes that the Hero 14 is significantly improved.
Would this magnetic mount be able to connect the camera a power rack in the gym? Would be super convenient to be able to stick it to a rack and move it around like do with a GO3.
Backwards compatibility on accessories is a great concept. But then again - that media mod (for the TRS jack they keep forgetting) is still a pain with battery swaps. I use GoPro for wannabee handy man content, and macro lens and magnetic mount sounds useful.
What do you think about the overheating of the GoPro 13 camera. I have a GoPro Hero 11 and when I record driving inside the car, it inevitably overheats during the summer. Thank you! Greetings from Croatia! (with a little help of google translation)
GoPro is unable to introduce real improvements…the sensor - which is the reason why GoPro lags behind the competition - is still the same! Changing lenses on an action camera is useless as it conflicts with the very nature of action cameras. Insta360 and DJI are way better
Kinda agree about the lesnses but also disagree ,I fly fpv and definitely want to be able to swap a damaged lense also be nice to be able to use the camera for a broader range of used with extra lenses imo. Like you don't have to buy them
The real question is did the actual solve the thermal problem? It better be given the batteries are not backwards compatible. Sounds like it is better but come on this has been a problem for at least the last 3 years. Little sad about the low light performance not improving at all.
@@ChaseTheSummit thank you and I appreciate your recommendation, after doing some research I have decided and just ordered the Dji Osmo Action 5 Pro. I hope I wont regret it.
the max lens doesn't give you a wider shot, it just allows you to use horizon leveling while on ultra wide and slightly lowers the distortion of ultra wide. it dose not give a wider angle view.
Gopro stated it's only compatible with Hero 13 and up. However, it will likely mount but the footage won't be automatically desqueezed. You may need to do that manually. I guess time wil ltell!
Hi, does the current Max Lens Mod 2.0 work on the 13? What about the magnetic charger cable offered separately....their site promo videos show pins on the side and the new charger costs extra, so does the 13 still have the standard USB C inside the battery compartment?
Yes, there's a manual setting to enable it. Yes, still has USB-C for charging. The "Contacto" charger is an accessory designed to let you charge and use your GoPro outdoors in the elements while maintaining waterproof enclosure.
All of this are accesories! They can make them work 100% on the 12 with a firmware uppdate! But they won't do that thinking people are gonna buy the 13! But this will just desapoint the fans even more!
Exactly, only thing i am interested is that anamorphic lens but since its not backward compatible with GP12 i will skip it. I am using DJI pocket 3 mainly now, gp only for harsh environment and underwater shoots.
@@dgutie8 DJI had magnetic mounts too. As mentioned though I think GoPros is the best because it gives you options, feels more secure and is reversible.
Still love my gopro 7 black and for me it's more about the same. I will buy a new one but I wanna try a 360 camera so that leads me to the insta360 x4.
I have the 8 and had similar opinion, got an X4 and Insta360 Go3. Love the versatility of both of them, neither are a direct competitor to Go Pro but find I gravitate to the Go3 more. Love its small form factor and the Insta360 app. When I do upgrade my GoPro, I'll probably replace with Insta360 Ace or Osmo Action. Go Pro seems to now be lagging behind.
I totally agree. The allure to a simple action camera is grab and go. The added lenses are useful for certain situations though like in my content I often take up-close shots of watches and that's where the macro lens is amazing! But it's really going to boil down to your use case!
This GoPro really shows this is as far an American company can get when it comes to camera tech, 13 iterations yet the can’t fit a one inch sensor inside the GoPro, the Osmo Pocket 3 which is smaller and came out more than a year already have an one inch sensor on it.
DJI Action cameras still doesn't have a 1" sensor though only Pocket because it has autofocus. There's a reason... Thermals and optics. These cameras don't have auto focus so making a 1" sensor work with a fixed focus lens would result in a real bad minimum focus distance. We'll see what happens with the other brands though!
Kinda, except in a bomb-proof case that you can strap on the outside of your car or to your dirtbike helmet. Do you trust your iPhone in those situations?
They're both good. In good light I prefer GoPro... in low light I prefer Ace Pro. It would be great to have a hybrid of both... but we're not there yet.
It feels a little bit like GoPro is doing the apple thing. First of all I love that there are new features like the different lenses and fast shutter. But on the other hand it has some big flaws that should've been easy to fix. Besides that I think it's unnecessary to change the design of the battery, so you NEED to buy a completely new one and that it is also stupid to not make the lenses backwards comparable. It's just a software update, but like apple they want you to buy the new one not just the lenses. Also I think the sensor that detects which lens is attached has the potential to kill third party lenses. And important features like lowlight or advanced settings are just not there. It would be such a relief to have the settings the camera is actually capable of on hand in the camera settings like on normal cameras so you don't have to use labs and shit that isn't nearly as convenient. And what kinda pisses me off is that these are all things that could be improved right now even for every previous camera, but they won't do it, because: Money. Of course if these things would be implemented natively less people would buy the new cameras, but GoPros image would be one of a kind. And maybe its not the best idea in terms of innovation to release a new camera every fucking year. I know that it's better in terms of business, I guess that innovation times longer than a year would improve a lot of the problems. But as this doesn't seem to change I think someone else is needed to get not even innovation but improvement on things that are getting better at a far lower pace than necessary.
My complaint is, all these RUclipsrs showing the "Legit kit" with all the lenses but if you look for it, it's still not available! It was a month ago this video was made, and there is quite a few unboxing videos with this kit including the camera, and all the lenses, but no price, can't even buy the kit if you want to. Obviously I'm not going to buy the camera alone, now that I've seen these videos on the Legit kit. I am tempted to just buy a DJI they wouldn't give a bunch of RUclipsrs a kit to show people and it's not available plus Gopro 13 cameras are not backwards compatible with older Gopro camera batteries, and they still haven't fixed the over heating problem, if you don't use external batteries. This company really knows how to piss people off!.... Rant over!
@@ChaseTheSummit That's exactly what I mean about knowing how to piss people off! Why would they give it to promoters to open on video and not make it available to customers 😒. I am not going to buy a Gopro 13 if I can't buy a Legit kit. Thanks for making the video and your reply. The footage looks terrible with the ND filter. As I suspected, it messes up the Hypersmooth, so I'm not sure why they're acting like this is so great, lol. There have been ND filters for Gopro's since the Hero 4! But unless the camera is sitting still, there isn't much use for them due to the Hypersmooth not working very well.
@@ChaseTheSummit Hypersmooth has to have a fast shutter speed to work properly. The way they presented these ND filters I wondered if there was some sort of software work around they had come up with to allow it to still work with a lower shutter speed, but it doesn't look like that's the case. It appears the only unique thing about these filters is the camera's ability to read which filter it is and tell you if you should go darker or lighter. Which is very helpful, as long as you're not using the camera for... well... action.
@@huntstyle you don’t necessarily want a fast shutter speed for ND filters. The problem they solve is that in direct sunlight the GoPro will crank shutter speed way up to compensate for bright sun which makes footage look jittery. By adding ND you can lower the shutter speed to introduce a bit of motion blur. Yes the camera recognizes this and should adjust accordingly with stabilization.
@@ChaseTheSummit yes I know. I have Polar Pro ND filters for my Hero 9. The problem is that you cannot get to a low enough shutter speed (180 degree shutter) for decent motion blur without causing Hypersmooth to not work. I've tried it. I found that on a bright sunny day I can get away with an ND8, but it really doesn't give any motion blur. Early in the morning, or otherwise lower light, and even the ND8 is too much. Give it a shot, I'm betting it's still the same with the 13.
seems like they placed the 12 internals into a new one with the ability to change lenses. lol! quality is still the same. and no, i'm personally not going to buy an "action camera" with interchangeable lenses.
It's a rare situation but it happens. For example in my own content I often run 100+ mile races that go into the night. A lot of my footage is just a black screen (with a faint headlamp) and my voice. It would be great to be able to see SOMETHING but it is what it is.
@@sr16gotheextramile51 buy dji, action 4 or the new action 5 when it comes. Ace pro is good too.
They continue to lead regardless… in June they sold their 50millionth camera so no other manufacturer comes close to that… I am disappointed the bitrate hasn’t increased in the 13 but the new nd filter system does look excellent…
please answer my question - what happens if i attach the new macro lens to the hero12? is it working perfectly? cant wait to hear from you thanks
It kind of attaches but it won't screw all of the way on and if you can get it to there's no "macro" setting in the camera so the image may look weird.
@@ChaseTheSummit did you really test it the question is do we need camera settings or will the display be good enought to control the sharpness
@@TVNetworld as mentioned you can't physically seat the lens all the way on the Hero 12 so it's not possible to use the lens. On top of that there's no macro setting in the camera either.
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks for answering
Do you recommend to buy it?
One more question, in what camera you are recording this video? 😁
GoPro 13 is pretty great as long as you’re not filming in the dark. This video was shot on a Sony FX3
@@ChaseTheSummit Can I record vlogs, normal video, or it's for action?
Damn dave you have had a week!!!
Well done with all the uploads !
My question - i dont have an action camera but id like to have one
I trail run, i rock climb and hike a ton
If you had to choose one action camera out them all- DJI, GOPRO, INSTA whatever.. what would you choose? - and why
Ha yes! Busy! It's tough to choose an action camera with so many good options. The GoPro looks the best in "good light" in my opinion. It's got great colors resolution and dynamic range. The DJI Action and Insta Ace Pro look great in lower light situations. I think the DJI Action is a nice hybrid between the two.
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks man!
And again well done with all the uploads, i hope it pays off!
When is your next race video?
What are your thoughts on Ace Pro low light performance while running? Is it good enough that it would edge out GoPro hero 13?
It’s much better in low light but any modern day phone blows both of them out of the water lol.
How are these for filming sporting events? From a distance. Just like regular camera use?
Not great. These have super wide angle lenses with fixed focus. Unless you’re close to the action your phone will do a better job.
I also think a zoom lens that can do at least 2x zoom would be good, as it allows people to shoot content that's a bit farther away.
there's still "linear" and you can zoom in on 5.3K in post pretty easily.
Should I return my hero12 for the 13? I just purchased the creator bundle 2 weeks ago and have until Monday to return it,
Should I make the switch?
I make trucking videos
YES, the 13 would be more future proof. Why buy something that won't be compatible with future lenses & batteries?
Yes, for better battery and GPS
@@Pilot_Steve thank u I returned it, I’m waiting to buy the new one tomorrow when it releases
@@edoer776 I returned it 🙏😭
I think the $199 camera is the better option based on all this.
A bigger sensor would be nice!
Would this magnetic mount be able to connect the camera a power rack in the gym? Would be super convenient to be able to stick it to a rack and move it around like do with a GO3.
Nice footages with action kids)) Thanks for the video
Will the macro lens fit a go pro 11 ?
Backwards compatibility on accessories is a great concept. But then again - that media mod (for the TRS jack they keep forgetting) is still a pain with battery swaps. I use GoPro for wannabee handy man content, and macro lens and magnetic mount sounds useful.
Still No bigger sensor
Still Bad in low light
Waiting for Ace Pro II
What do you think about the overheating of the GoPro 13 camera. I have a GoPro Hero 11 and when I record driving inside the car, it inevitably overheats during the summer. Thank you!
Greetings from Croatia!
(with a little help of google translation)
it's significantly improved compared to the Hero 12
Okay, thank you very much. I subscribed to your channel.
Should I buy 13?? I have HERO 10 black...
Like you don't have to buy them
I go for an action camera to have a no-brainer cam in my pocket, not to have 10 parts I have to switch over.
Lags behind when it has the highest resolution qnd frame rates, best stabilisation and auto shots 😂 you talk about one use case in low light
It would be nice to know if you have to turn off stabilization to use the anamorphic lens.
super review! thanks
This is a good day to upgrade that gopro 8 to the gopro 11 or 12 when prices bumps down.
в конце квадракоптер должен был влететь в дерево)))
Bruv , does now the ultra wide lens support HDR ? on GP12 it didn't ....
Thank you Dave, just curious if it still has only 4:2:0 10-bit on 4k n 5.3k or has 4:2:2 now?
Still 4:2:0 10-bit. 4:2:2 would have been nice!
The anamorphic lens seems to be the best move of this new camera but having it's launch somewhere in 2025 (?!) seems quite disapointing...
Sample Footage video+gps, on gdrive or dropbox please ....
The real question is did the actual solve the thermal problem? It better be given the batteries are not backwards compatible. Sounds like it is better but come on this has been a problem for at least the last 3 years. Little sad about the low light performance not improving at all.
I have a Hero 3+ Black, should I upgrade it to 13 Black?
That's a pretty massive upgrade. You'd certainly notice a big difference in video and audio quality as well as stabilization and battery life.
It gives the camera a wider shot which enables horizon leveling by adding some fudge factor around the frame to crop into.
Hello for a beginner first time using go pro is this worth buying for a pov video content creator
Yup
Can we edit slow motion video on go pro app??
Yes
Just recently bought the Hero12 and I’m interested to finding out if the Hero13 macro and anamorphic lenses will work on my gopro?
Insta 360 Ace Pro has had magnetic mounts for awhile…no new sensor! But do like the different lenses.

I go for an action camera to have a no-brainer cam in my pocket, not to have 10 parts I have to switch over.
Busy September, Nice
So busy!
Pretty much does what the iPhone does already except don't have to buy loads of adaptors and accessories.
Kinda, except in a bomb-proof case that you can strap on the outside of your car or to your dirtbike helmet. Do you trust your iPhone in those situations?
May I ask how and where did you get the update file from? I got mine early but cannot use it without updating the “Quik” app but it isn’t available
You'll probably have to wait. I was added to the Beta program to gain access.
can you overlay garmin live stats?
No, but with built in GPS you can overlay stats like speed and distance.
Can't beat insta 360 ace pro
They're both good. In good light I prefer GoPro... in low light I prefer Ace Pro. It would be great to have a hybrid of both... but we're not there yet.
@@ChaseTheSummit in low light go pro 13 can't beat ace pro you can try it
@@ChaseTheSummit insta ace pro is super smooth
Does the magnetic mount work with gopro 12?
Nope but you could probably swap out the base plate with a magnetic version if you can find just that component. IT screws in.
Do the new ND-filters fit on a hero 12 black?
They fit, but the camera doesn't detect them. So in theory they will work but the camera won't adjust the frame rate to opimize the footage.
But as this doesn't seem to change I think someone else is needed to get not even innovation but improvement on things that are getting better at a far lower pace than necessary.
in portugal stores the go pro is sold at 400 euros !!!!!!!!! no signs of the go pro 13 in the stores here in Portugal
Rant over!
The kit is a promo kit for the media. To my understanding it's not available for purchase.
@@ChaseTheSummit That's exactly what I mean about knowing how to piss people off! Why would they give it to promoters to open on video and not make it available to customers 😒. I am not going to buy a Gopro 13 if I can't buy a Legit kit. Thanks for making the video and your reply. I guess I'm going to wait to see if the 14 will actually solve the real issue before I buy another Gopro anyways.

Я думал они сделают хоть что то, чтобы не приходилось выкидывать в мусорку съемки в пасмурную погоду.
I think some of that was user error. The camera uses an auto cinematic mode to try to smooth out the blur. I'll be doing more testing... stay tuned.

Honestly though why would anyone want to film at night in the dark ya know? lol.. If it has Night Settings that's awesome
It's a rare situation but it happens. For example in my own content I often run 100+ mile races that go into the night. A lot of my footage is just a black screen (with a faint headlamp) and my voice. It would be great to be able to see SOMETHING but it is what it is. Some other brands like DJI and Insta360 do better in the dark but the "look" of a GoPro in good light is hard to beat!
