Seeing the Ludwig cutscene is what actually got me interested in Bloodborne and I love how his battle is essentially his own heroic journey of reclaiming his humanity for one last duel as his theme builds into brass fanfare. Then there's how his post fight dialogue ties into the lore.
Bloodborne is probably FromSoftware’s lore masterpiece, everything is a lot clearer than most of their games, including Elden Ring, even though a lot of the lore is also kinda disturbing lol
Dark Souls 2’s “Vendrick” fight is a surprise twist. He completely ignores you. Attacking does nothing. This undead giant, dragging a huge sword, just shuffles around deep inside a giant mass tomb. There’s no indication if he’s friend or foe, or what to do. The secret is that his defense is modified to be 32x normal. You can eventually find enough items that slowly reduce it, but there’s no indication they do. Hopefully your curiosity and perseverance pays off. You find enough items, and you keep returning to attack him, hoping something happens. Suddenly, he snaps out of plodding around, and raises up his giant sword over his giant body, the entrance is blocked by a foggy mist, and the quiet is cut with dramatic music; the fight is on! It’s a very surprising transformation.
@@Cesare-Borgia It’s not possible to aggro Vendrick to attack, until you get at least 1 Giant Soul. And even then, it takes many swings to do so. At the point you meet him, at best you could have 1.

The cutscene starts with just a normal seltas coming at you before these giant earwig-like tongs grab it and soak the thing with what look to be pheromones. When Dante first changes styles in DMC4 when you fight him as Nero, it’s safe to say no one was ready for that. Previously styles had to be selected in a menu. It’s a bit of an “Oh shit” moment
Doom 2016, when Olivia Pierce is transformed into the Spider Mastermind. I mean, it was as punishment, not as a "promotion". It was pretty unexpected and one of the best boss fights I've ever player
Final Fantasy 8, when you fight the president on the train. That had me spooked when I was a kid and I managed to do the fight with my eyes closed every damn time.
Not really. You EXPECT resident evil bosses to transform into weird grotesque monsters. This list is about UNEXPECTED transformations. Like that Bloodborne boss. Not exactly weird. Doesn't even look different. Just starts fighting differently. In completely the opposite way that you would think it would.
Not sure how much you know now, but to me, the basic message of the game with the Starworm and the bird mechanic is this- humans try to put meaning in a lot of things. There has to be a reason behind something we can't understand or else nothing at all makes sense to us in this universe where we're pretty much insignificant, despite our intelligence and technological advancements. And for all the worship and research carried into the Starworm and its energy in Iconoclasts, it's revealed that... it's no god, just some random alien trucker's literal ship that he needed to refuel and was confused why all these tiny pink monkeys sucked up all the fuel from this planet that doubles as an intergalactic gas-station. The people started actual religious campaigns, wars, and uprisings all centered around a deity that turned out to be some dude's car (and who can't even understand our language). It's so hilariously warped that it feels like a massive smack in the face for all involved.
