Drybrushing the edge of your base to get a feel for your drybrush and how much paints in it before painting on the mini... that's one of the best tips I've heard in the hobby in years... whoever thought of that is a genius.
Hey just wanted to say that I've been following your channel for a while and you make by far the best tutorials for someone who likes to get armies painted fast to a good standard. I always recommend your videos to both experienced painters and absolute beginners. Congrats and please keep doing what you are doing!
I TERRIBLY needed this, buddy, specially as one of the never-painters myself, those who never get the painting done. I need to start painting my stuff, goddammit. The grey is gonna DEVOUR ME. Follow you since the very first one guard video. You're a true inspiration fella. Keep up the good job!
"The grey is gonna DEVOUR ME." Prime them Zenithal style with Zandri Dust, optionally a touch of white black from right below and a touch of white from right above. It goes relatively fast and is less painful than dull grey plastic minis standing around, and painting feels like it's just dotting the "i"s at that point.
Looks great! Been looking at the early to the hobby imperial guard I painted badly & wanting to get a few ideas on touching them up. Counter to that is the leman russ tank I stripped off the paint and waiting a while for it to dry. Thanks for the fun video!
I think I found you through videos of painting Guardsmen and Leman Russ tanks as I started my own army. So thanks for the inspiration and guidance - and mostly for teaching me about Alys Brown Liquid!
Amazing as always. Your original cadian video allowed me to get my old cadian painted up (which I'd never managed to do with any other army before). This adapted method looks fantastic, I treated myself to the new cadian box set and they'll be getting this treatment 😅
Beautiful job as always Sonic, glad to see the old cadian with the new ones, Especially seeing the old technique works just as well. Enjoy your box of soldiers and cheers!
It's honestly a surprise how many people that still brings in to this day. It's certainly dated! But at least the advice in there is still solid enough to stick around for. 😅
Thanks for this video. I just finished painting my 2 squads , with a different method and of course i am a beginner so not half as good as yours. I will try this one as soon as I get my hand on more squads :)
I've been gearing up to get back into mini painting after about 20 years. Recently ordered some 'magic highlighting juice' ... I mean ... Vallejo Ivory 😉👍
I was very happy to see a Cadian Infantry tutorial and this was great! I never thought of using U.S. Dark Green before but I like it better than the Castellan Green as it is not as blue. The thinned Agrax Earthshade does do a better job of shading the miniature too. Thanks for sharing this.
really like your guide. Especially that you made a milestone before the highlighting. That way you can see a result if you think highlighting is not necessary for a hordlike army. Really great idea. keep on :D
I've done it only a couple times before in other videos, but it's something I can see being quite useful depending on the army. I'll try and include that little 'halfway point' more often where I can!
I went the 122nd route because it was my first army back in the day, but damn if you don't make a convicing argument for the classic Cadian scheme. Always pick up something new watching you paint.
Fanstisic as always. Really going to help me get over my fear of painting my 100s of Guardsmen that i have been putting off. I am hoping that you might be willing to do one of the Ordiance Batteries in a non-Cadian Color Scheme or once the Dorn Tank Drops your take on a new camo scheme. Keep up the fanstic work as always.
These new IGs are better proportioned than the older ones, expecially in the heads. This paint scheme is as simple as efficient, when you've to paint a lot of them. Plus, with some colours' swap, it could be adapted to other terrain.
Love your videos! They have helped me come on so far in my painting. Would you consider doing a Necromunda Palanite Enforcer? some of my earliest conversions were Palanite Enforcers and I have absolutely no idea how to go about painting them. Keep up the good work!
I thought I'd use some of these techniques, plus some brown-white Zenithal basecoating to help speed paint my Cadian airborne. I got to the battle ready stage and really liked it but I thought I needed another highlight. Then maybe another to really make the cloth pop. Then I obviously have to highlight the polymer parts more too right? And faces really pop so I'd better put the work in on those. Now I'm looking at a really pretty squad of guardsmen, in an army that would take months to paint if I paint them like this. I have a problem.
Thank you very much for your video, excellent paint. I am beginning the Astra Militarum. Your video will be a perfect reference for all my paint of soldiers cause I don't like the contrast A question, the reference please of the grass. Hello from Paris. Congratulations
All the stuff I’ve seen people doing with these new cadians is affecting me, I’ve got an itch to pick some up, maybe headswap em with something from Victoria miniature, I’m thinking going for the Calibanite Jagers from the Horus Heresy novel Fallen Angels
Would love to see how these new cadians work with some of the 3rd party heads. I was wondering if anvil industry heads fit in the neck recess. Can't seem to find any pictures online of people trying
Great video as usual, but I do have a request. Could you do some other paint schemes for imperial guard, I really want to start a new army but currently can't make up my mind as to what colors to use.🙏😇🇺🇸
Well, the short answer is that there's already a ton of Imperial Guard colour schemes in the back catalogue of videos - especially if you count some of them that aren't on GW miniatures. But I do plan to come back around to these guys again and do something different than the classic US paratrooper look. 😅
I remember watching your old Cadian video when I first started painting. Followed it to a tee, and loved the results, I switched out Castellan green for Kantor Blue that based on my Dawn of War army. Do you plan on doing Kasrkin?
Another fantastic video! Question: When a Model has a foot raised up off the ground, is it worth it to add some texture paint to the sole of his/her boot to tie it into the base or just leave as the general boot colour to save time?
Good question! It's something I ordinarily don't pay much attention to, if I'm honest, but I'd go with just drybrushing a little of the 'dirt highlight' on the boot, whatever it might be. Putting the texture paint itself on the boot is going to make the surface look suuuper muddy and gross.
It is highlighted; literally the first paint that comes out during the highlighting section in the timestamps is Knight-Questor Flesh to go over some of the face. 😅
"Slow down" can literally be the main lesson from your videos. Slow down, have fun painting, and trust the process.

Best paint tutorial I’ve seen! HUGELY helpful!
Love the tip about adding water near paint and then mixing it in!
Looks great. Am I the only one who thought he had a roll of TP 🧻 on his belt?🤔
I think that might just be you... 🤣
Always be prepared in the field for any adverse conditions that may arise.
Lol yup! I thought it was some classic kiwi humour!
Dude, baby wipes and TP are a godsend on the field 😂
It was the first thing that I thought when I saw it 🤣
Can we get a video on your brush care routine? And your brush choices? I'm always struck how your brushes have such wonderful (almost deadly) points.
Thank you , Troy .

Just an update, I painted 20 Guardsmen using your exact technique in under 9 hours. Thank you so much for your amazing content.

I've been feeling the same since the first Cadian video. I've simply GOT to start painting someday! You're not alone! :P
Oddball! nice avatar pic.
@@CurrySoSpicy Ah, a man of finesse. Appreciated buddy

So I’ve used your old tutorial for all these years. I’m going to change over to this new process. Thanks for sharing!
Using this to paint my Krieg - what a wonderful tutorial, thank you!
This is my fave Cadian tutorial on RUclips. Thank you, it has helped me lots
glad you did the updated models of the Cadian Guard to paint up my friend.
Your style is so clean without any fuss. Just straightforward AF niceness
Dude, absolutely first class. I’ve been watching your videos for years. Great technique. Keep it up!
I think I found you through videos of painting Guardsmen and Leman Russ tanks as I started my own army. So thanks for the inspiration and guidance - and mostly for teaching me about Alys Brown Liquid!
The magic wash mixes with the deeply unsettling names are half the reason to check in and see what I'm up to! ;D

Another excellent video, with sound painting advice: "I draw the line at highlighting gators." LOL
Perfect Color scheme! Making Cadia proud!
Breath of fresh air to see something simple, well done, and with great results.
Just the motivation I needed to crack open my gear again.
Beautiful job as always Sonic, glad to see the old cadian with the new ones, Especially seeing the old technique works just as well. Enjoy your box of soldiers and cheers!
They really are quite swish!
You just blew my mind a little with that enamel cup. That was a WW2 british thing, but it's also a beautiful little touch of color on the mini.
Nice paint job! I think I’ll use this for my Minka Lesk model
About to paint 80 guys this color scheme. Love your videos very detailed and love your painting style!
Ouh yeah, nothing beats a classic ☺️. Nice work, Troy!
Love this tutorial! I used the original battle ready method for my guard army over lockdown. I used your tank camo scheme too!
Love how you suggest alternate colors for Citadel and Vallejo! I love both. Great content as always 👍🏽👌😊
That original Cadian video got my subscription, first of yours I watched.
It's honestly a surprise how many people that still brings in to this day. It's certainly dated! But at least the advice in there is still solid enough to stick around for. 😅
I found your channel through that old guardsmen video. With that, I painted my first army too.
Great work looks awesome . I hope someone like you will show how to paint flawless host in the future.
Should've kept the cup that white color, I like the idea of a guardsman running around with a roll of toilet paper on his kit.
Classic Sonicsledge! A+

As chance would have it, I've got plans to try the 122nd scheme on these new guys as well... :D
@Sonic Sledgehammer Studio Definitely looking forward to polishing my current scheme then!
Just about to tackle the combat patrol, so this I’ll be useful!

I don't know if it's the "official" scheme, but I really like the dark green on that gun.

Love your work. Just finished painting Ursula Creed. Fancy doing one for Leontus?
Have you done the Kasrkin yet? Love to see a video of that next!
Gotta admit that my first impression was that his mug was a roll of TP. :)

Eventually, is the short answer. I've got a couple Necromunda kits lined up for action at some point!

can allys brown liquid still be made with the new agrax earthshade?
I haven't tried it myself, so I can't really say. I can't imagine it'd make a huge difference.
Always remember to bump the camera. Very important lol
Good one, dude. (I want to modify that mug so bad, make it look like a roll of toilet paper.)
Would you be willing to paint the RedMakers Solar Guard, or are they too similar to the Solar Auxilia?
At some point, sure. Right away it'd be more STLs I gotta buy. 😅
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio It doesn't seem like any of the sites that sell the models do gift cards or I'd send one your way.
Wow, Bloodreaver Flesh makes for an amazing skin tone. That's all you did, no highlighting or anything?

Everyone skipping base… everytime I want know how do base aaaaand skip :D
Have you tried the description? It's just texture paste and a drybrush.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio well that solve this mystery :D Thx a lot
