I've seen a lot of videos talking about the Black Metal influences on Dungeon Synth, but I wonder why nobody mentions videogame's contributions to the genre? I'd say some of the best Dungeon Synth is found in the soundtracks of dungeon crawlers and fantasy adventure games. King's Field 4 is one of the most 'Dungeon Synth-y' games out there, and many classic Zelda ambient tunes I would also consider Dungeon Synth.

I love dungeon synth, and I listened to this while driving, and I have to confess that I had a stack of DnD books in my passenger seat from my last gaming session... And not the current edition, oh no, it's old shit, because ofc it is, lol. Honorable mention for this type of music (at least in my mind) is some of the tracks from the soundtrack for the late 90s PC games Thief: the Dark Project, and Thief2: the metal age. I guess they would be more "dark ambient" en general, but there's a handful of sections which recall all that I love about Dungeon Synth (look up Horn of Quintus on YT, and you can find someone who looped that 30ish second clip into like a 10 minute track. It's dark, minimalist, very atmospheric, and then occasionally throws punches like a heavyweight boxer.

I always loved the synth interludes/outros from Black Metal albums or Atmospheric Black Metal songs with synths/keyboards like Eldamar, so maybe I was a Dungeon Synth enjoyer before it was cool

DS has been my comfort music for years. There's no other genre that evokes certain feelings and fuels imagination.

I can't believe he name dropped Lord Lovidicus. He was my best friend in high school and I even did the vocals on one of his tracks, Gorgoroth on the album Daulu Burz-ishi. I was there since his first album, they were all created in his sweaty smelly basement. We also had a Black Metal band called Black Tyrants. Wow I cant believe how spot on this video was.

Mortiis...that's a name I haven't thought about in a long time. I always thought that it was weird how a guy connected to the Norwegian black metal scene was making electronic metal.

I feel like the main influence missed in this video is all of the fantasy games of the 80s, which naturally sported synthesiser/8-bit music. It is the single biggest contributor to the genre, and way more important to talk about than black metal.

I remember back in 97 discovering Mortiis. Was literally an eye opening experience for me, going into something totally different in comparison with the rest of the black metal bands of that era.
