Who cares whether you like the story or not. What's really important is that Blender IS! I whole-heartedly salute the Blender Foundation for what they give everyone. Their obvious mission, goal, and method could never happen here in the U.S., because my country and the people who truly control it would never even consider such an open and egalitarian approach to the dissemination of knowledge, technology, and art. The Blender Foundation should be a reminder to the entire world what can be achieved when you take politics and economics out of the equation and focus on that which truly matters: the honest advancement of knowledge and creativity for all of us.
***** "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." BTW a definition of Cartoon - noun - "a motion picture using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects."
If I was Sintel, I would've stayed in the cave, waiting to die. As i do not know how to live life anymore. To think of it, you found something so precious to you, you cherished it, and took tender care of it. Yet, one day its gone, and when you tried your very best to get it back, you unintentionally ended up killing it, making things irreversibly worst. Life is just too cruel.
That's exactly what I would've done! Cuddled with Scales, crying until I died.. As awesome as this film is, I sure wish it didn't end with Scales dying!
I have a old memory with this. It was the first movie that made me cry, I was like 8yo. And it made me so sad back in the day, that I came here more than a decade later to rewatch it. It is still sad asf, not gonna lie...
I can't believe something so beautiful was made over 9 years ago ... with a program that is still to this day free ... Some people won't realize how empowering Blender, and all of its people, really are.
All these years later, I do and don’t know why I always stumble back to this short. It’s absolutely beautiful and well written, but ever so bittersweet. Knees to the floor every time.
Same here. I like it and hate it at the same time, I like it because it’s so good and I hate it because scales the dragon died and the bad plot because there’s no way she wouldn’t realize scale has grown
Only the best stories can make you cry, and while I've lost count how many times I've watched this remarkable piece of art over the years showing it to people I know, Sintel brings a tear to my eye every time. This film is inspiring not only for the beautiful story but for the magical quality animation. Bravo!
This short film was riveting. The musical overlay was astounding and so were the animations. I was bawling like a little kid at the end of this video and not many videos are able to do this to me.
Beautiful, skillful animations with rare albeit good accurate voice acting and fanatic script. 11/10 will watch again. This story also has a great and strong message: people change over the years, and perhaps without noticing, so do you. To go through the fire and the flames for those you love is great, but don't let it blind you into abandoning who you are, and expecting your friends to remain the same. A though and sad lesson, but an important one nonetheless. ps. OMGOMGOMG I LOVE DRAGONS.
For everyone watching this and feeling awful, it might help to know that the ending is pretty clearly supposed to be optimistic. Yes, Sintel killed Scales and is left to stagger in shock from the cave-in, but the same flowers that moments ago seemed to be mirroring her grief state start to bloom as the baby dragon is revealed to not only be alive, but scampering after her. Even if she never forgives herself for what she did to Scales, the same determination that blinded her even to the passage of time isn't going to let her abandon her responsibility to the baby dragon. So cheer up, mates. This story didn't end as a tragedy. It's just become a quest for redemption.
The only thing which would've made this story even better in my opinion is if she rescued the baby dragon from the collapsing cave, but it fought off because it was angry she killed its mother, and she had to kill the baby dragon as well in the end. Then it would have been a true tragedy.
@@BineroBE I don't think that would fit either thematically or logically. If everything up until the cave-in was left the same, I can't imagine any way that Sintel would believably kill the baby dragon, and _especially_ not in self-defense. By the end of the video's story, Sintel is broken. I can't imagine a reason why she'd '[have] to kill the baby dragon' because even if she knew it was going to kill her, she'd probably let it. Or, more likely, she'd just kill herself to speed up the process. If anything, _that_ would be tragedy taken to the fullest degree, because then the cycle of pain would keep going. Scales is still dead, Sintel would die without any sense of closure or redemption, and the baby dragon would be thrust into a cruel and violent world after the death of its mother. It would probably just grow up to be the kind of monster that is eventually slain by a valiant knight/hero/whoever after years of terrorizing the populace for seemingly no reason except that it could.
I only watched the video because of your comment. I guess I am more mentally resilient as the film only had me thinking "stupid girl, why would she expect her dragon to be the same size and age, after so many years searching".
Fringe Wizard I’m pretty sure it was trying to say she spent her whole life searching for him without realizing. That’s why once the blood comes her appearance starts to change and she looks old
That was incredible powerful movie. So powerful in fact that is made me feel so much sadness when I figured out that Scales what the big dragon after it sniffed her and I knew that Scales was going to die. I'm still crying over this and trying to type at the same time just makes typing this even harder because I have had to stop after after every few words to get enough of the sadness out to continue this, right now my thought feels so raw I haven't even scream, bellow, or yell yet.
This came out when I was 10 years old. When I was 12 I got into game development and found this video. Ten years later, I'm working a full time job in IT and was working on a client's PC when I came across this video in their files. From the file thumbnail I recognized it instantly. The name and story had left me, but I knew that it was the short film that blender made that got me so interested in game development. Which, in turn got me into computers and led me to the job that I'm working in today. I sat and watched this whole thing on a client's PC while on the job. As a 22 year old man I didn't think I would nearly start crying at work.
Breathtaking, I've only just begun my blender journey. Making something every day until I get to the point I can create something on this scale. Pretty amazing short story as well. Props all around to all involved in this great piece of work!

Honestly seeing a story with a sad ending is refreshing, i can tell you the ending of 99% of all movies ever made. "Its a happy ending". Its why i like game of thrones and its why i loved this :D
I know I'm like 5 years late, but if you still think like this... Boy, is anime the solution for you! Have depression? Anime will fix it, however it will tear it down in the last 2-3 episodes and make you cry for the next couple days and you'll think to yourself, "Never again". But you'll always have that empty void because you enjoyed one anime, so you'll try to fill it with watching another, hoping it has a good ending, but it won't and the void gets bigger and repeat.
7:33 “You’ve only failed to see…” he means that she didn’t notice she was already in dragon lands, but she also failed to see much more. She failed see that much time has passed, to see that she has aged, and that Scales would be an adult.
My brother showed this short film to me when I was 12, I'm 21 now and watched this again after forgetting the plot but just remembering how it made me bawl my eyes out, I am now crying again and this is honestly the best writing I ever saw in a film, it really should be made into a full length movie for it's 10th anniversary.

A beautifully made short film with a simple storyline, which proves that the fantasy genre can work just as well on a small scale as on a blockbuster. It’s impossible not to feel absorbed by the near-perfect art direction. The filmmakers have designed a world pretty ambitious to execute in 14 minutes, and the result is mind blowing. Its atmosphere and detail reminded me of the Shane Acker film 9
What a beautiful & haunting piece of animation magic. The ending damn near killed me... was not expecting that. I had just finished Big Buck Bunny & Elephants Dream; this one wins hands down.
It is completely amazing to see how a free program has evolved into a beautiful community full of great artistic minds sharing their ideas with the world, the fact that anyone with a pinch of talent and a load of ambition can make a work of beauty like this on a free program is amazing
I watched this when I was 10 years old or so. This crushed me back then. Couldn't be happy for a week. 12 years later I finally rewatched it and I'm actually crying again...
I'm not good at interpreting movies but in addition to what others have said once she shed Scale's blood she saw her aged reflection in it's blood and how old much she had really aged and how long she had been looking for Scales...You can see her aged look in the reflection in Scale's blood..I would never even watch an animated movie like this but I'm glad I did...It was an awesome creation!
i remember when i was like in 5th or 6th grade, our schools allowed us to use tablets for educational purposes and they like put a lock on it with an app or sum. all the stuff like google and gmail were accessible tho. so one student went on wikipedia an somehow discovered this short film and the entire went mad bout it. ngl i was fuckin addicted too, i used to watch it every single day, during class before going to school, on our bus etc. but when i grew up i forgot the name of the movie and here i am, at 15, after like years of searching. love this.
Came here to get inspiration for my own project, in 14 minutes and 48 seconds iv wowed, laughed, smiled, had my mouth wide open in awe and then shock and now im leaving with a lump in my throat in less than 15 minutes iv felt more emotion than I have through 2 hour long films, you people are incredible and although im feeling down from the final scenes im really inspired to continue with Beep.
Gods ten years later and somehow this video is even better than the first time I saw it. I never noticed that you can see Sintel's older face in the bowl in the beginning, or picked up on the foreshadowing when the old man says that the blade has claimed much innocent life.
Don’t tell me this is not an abstract of a fabulous film. The adventure of Sintel must last more than 15 minutes. And the theme song is wonderfully touching.
Wonderful animation. Amazing and heartfelt story. The closest feeling I got to this short was 2009's Avatar in regard to music, emotions, character/environment design and a heartfelt story of finding oneself by finding something you are so separate and distinct from the conventional stereortypes. 12/10
Champ PC Gamer No, I've never been through similar stuff like raising dragons from a baby, and then spending a quarter of my life or longer tracking them down and then accidentally slaying them when they are adults and neither have you.
Wonder Creation Studios I meant losing something very dear to you, and it being your fault :P As you can probably tell, I am never very good at making myself clear
Back when i was in college we didn't have the technology like netflix or streaming services, so i watched this over and over as a form of entertainment. It became my comfort movie whenever i felt my rented room feels too quiet and empty. Glad for some reason i got reminded of this animation
I've just watched this again, after many years, and it is incredible to see how it has held up! It was so ahead of its time! The character development and animation, the cinematography, the sets, the shots, everything is A++++. However, I'm still on the fence with the storyline. Scales steals the show. In my opinion, when Sintel kills Scales, she also kills the connection that the audience had with her. It doesn't matter that Scales was killed in self defence. Sintel is a "tragic hero" who killed the heart of the movie. My heart stayed in the cave with Scales. When the cave was collapsing, if Sintel would have stayed with Scales, to die with her, I might have felt differently. I could have cared less if Sintel fell off of the cliff that she was moping on afterwards, and I could have cared less that the little dragon was scampering after her. I didn't give a damn about her after she killed Scales and saved herself. That's a tragic hero that just became a coward. Regardless of my opinion on story, this is still an incredible showcase for an amazing Open Source project. Kudos to everyone on this. It still blows my mind.
What a fucking brilliant movie, absolutely love it! An alternative ending would be for her to hug the dragon as it dies and as the tunnel collapses on them, that would drill the final nail into your heart.
that dragons lance weapon shes using, its cursed, the old man said that in the beginning. the old guy said that the weapons has seen allot of innocent blood. aka i think the lance is what ended up making her loose track of how long she was traveling for. and it blinded her when she entered the cave.
2020 anyone?? This animation is still pretty great considering how old it is. Blender has come such a long way! Not only Blender, but other 3D modeling/rendering software too. I can't wait to see what the future is like for movies and games, cus' it just keeps gettin' better and better...
Sony should be charged for fraudulent copyright claims over this video. Nobody should be above the law neither should their lawyers who don't know anything about copyright. No wonder Sony is having finacial issues. They steal other peoples work and claim it's theirs.
Supposedly their claiming of copyright over the version they used for the 4K demos violates the CC 3.0 license and therefore voids their right to use it. So I guess BF could go after them to stop.
Sony used Sintel renders in their 4k television ad campaign, YT automated content snooper picked up the matching content from Blender Channel and assigned the copyright to the one with more money.
the similarities /sequence of events are mindblowing and heart warming at the same time . during every pole shift or mood swing whatever tickles your fancy.
its a short film short films are LEGAL to be online if you nodest its here for the last three years and truly theres nothing wrong with that plus the upload of the movie its the makers of it well basicly its alright:)
amir dagan it's not that short films are or not legal. It's that this film BELONGS to the Blender Foundation and is released under Creative Commons 3.0, a free licence. Sony has not only no right to take it down, it has not even the right to claim it belongs to them, they have BROKEN THE LAW, TWICE. They have stolen the work from others, not by making a small copy and watching it with their friends but by claiming attribution on something they don't own and that's a crime of slanter, And to add insult to injury they have forbidden to the own creators of the movie to use their own Intellectual Property in the way they see fit. I read that some people where thinking on crowdfunding legal actions against such abuses, I would very gladly participate if somebody sets up such a project!
The story unfolds so nicely, and sets up a really impactful ending. An amazing tale, packed in a 15 minute long video animation which really grips at your heart.
Im halfway through and I dread I know what will happen. Scales looks exactly like the dragon that grabbed him and she's going to kill that dragon -_- oh dear god. I don't think I can handle this 💔 --- and YUP I was right. Jesus Christ. Fuck

Yep. I stumbled across this on another website and was like "eh might as well watch some silly thing" and dear god it was not that at all! D: It hurts, like, I am almost actually crying...
I kind of feel bad for Scale’s mother, because she just had her dragonet taken away from her, and she might have thought that Sintil had stolen her dragonet. Plus, if you were Scale’s mother, how would you feel about your own dragonet taken away from you?
That was a shocker when you as watcher realise that she not only killed her old friend but also that she everything she had dedicated her whole life into this quest to see everything crumbles in the end. That is heart wrenching and something many people can relate to. Very well done.
I actually think that cycles was integrated to blender during Sintel's developpment, that is precisely the goal of blender open movies, not only showcase but developpe tools in function of the needs.
This is not only a demonstration of blender capabilities. Characters, locations, script, meaning and etc. - really talented people did it. Thanks from blender user!
I think there should be a petition to make a part two and make it so scales somehow survived. I mean so little actual lore is established here. They could make it so dragons are immortal maybe. Or they reincarnate with all their memories? Protected by magick? Crazy healing factor? Idk anything the people who made this are obviously beyond creative enough to come up with some kind of reason. i first saw this in middle school im 27 now and i still think about how dirty yall did my boy scales bc come on now

I have been coming back to this short film for the last 7 years now. It’s probably the first short film I found on RUclips ever and I love it so much.
I am still at the cube and can pan and zoom, what next?
***** I dont get it
Oh now i get it :P
Adolf Ghostler Don't give up! You're very close to making your own cartoon!
***** whats in a name..
This film certainly did take a major climax point
8 Films
What?
You know the climax was heart-breaking....
8 Films Indeed it was.
I would love to see a Sintel remake. Just to show how far Blender has come.
We might. Just might.
No.
It's amazing how much the production quality has improved in Charge, but the storytelling was already really really good in this old movie, too.
Bravo!
This means so much to me. Thank you so much!
I could not watch it more then once, and I still cry seeing the video title.
This short film proves it's not about graphics that make a film great. It's all about storytelling! Loved it.
I think this is the oldest 1080p video on RUclips
This short film was riveting. The musical overlay was astounding and so were the animations. I was bawling like a little kid at the end of this video and not many videos are able to do this to me.
this is an animation made over nine years ago; still it holds up on all the levels. Kudos to the creators and talents.
14 years later...
And when a friend asked me what's my favorite movie, I came back here.
Navnik BHSilver I
"ps. OMGOMGOMG I LOVE DRAGONS." I can tell by your profile picture scalie.
that was deep as hell, but well said. thank you
For everyone watching this and feeling awful, it might help to know that the ending is pretty clearly supposed to be optimistic.
@@electricbayonet2 Nah. The human instinct to survive prevails, especially in a panic, and even with her dead the dragon wouldn't be able to live on.
Yay u made me happy!!
lol y am i replying to myself
That travel montage was editing genius :D
That montage could be stretched out to a whole series and still not do much more. Its great.
She probably travelled for longer than this comment is old
I came to learn about animation not to have a mental breakdown
Great Zeus hahahaha
lmao sameeeee
IKR, Dafuq!

I found this back then.. loved it... still like the music.. and cry at the end..
Honestly seeing a story with a sad ending is refreshing, i can tell you the ending of 99% of all movies ever made. "Its a happy ending". Its why i like game of thrones and its why i loved this :D
That's perhaps because people usually want to end the movie when they come to a satisfying conclusion :J
Game of thrones hasnt ended
I know I'm like 5 years late, but if you still think like this... Boy, is anime the solution for you! Have depression? Anime will fix it, however it will tear it down in the last 2-3 episodes and make you cry for the next couple days and you'll think to yourself, "Never again". But you'll always have that empty void because you enjoyed one anime, so you'll try to fill it with watching another, hoping it has a good ending, but it won't and the void gets bigger and repeat.
@@Amin_3k has now and boy I hear its mighty disappointing
@MIA MCCORMICK Not when i commented
7:33 “You’ve only failed to see…” he means that she didn’t notice she was already in dragon lands, but she also failed to see much more. She failed see that much time has passed, to see that she has aged, and that Scales would be an adult.
Still brilliant after all these years . .
This is an amazing piece of Blender art, and even better considering that is was funded by the community. Way to go, Blender Institute!

Yep your right the right way is :Kill first---- DONT ask questions later. RIP Scales
that is the best short animation movie that i have ever seen, I will never forget this movie
"This blade has a dark past, it has shed much innocent blood."
😳
And that is called Foreshadowing! :
Very nice foreshadowing when you look back.
Damn that was heart wrenching! more so than most movies!
I second that. I think my heart is broken right now...
My heart has never been the same after this.
9 years, and it still brings to tears as in 2010. Damn it, the best Blender movie by plot. And what a song it has in the end!
Well, I discovered this film because of the Sony screw up, glad I did... made me cry! Beautiful story...
i remember when i was like in 5th or 6th grade, our schools allowed us to use tablets for educational purposes and they like put a lock on it with an app or sum. all the stuff like google and gmail were accessible tho. so one student went on wikipedia an somehow discovered this short film and the entire went mad bout it. ngl i was fuckin addicted too, i used to watch it every single day, during class before going to school, on our bus etc. but when i grew up i forgot the name of the movie and here i am, at 15, after like years of searching. love this.
Came here to get inspiration for my own project, in 14 minutes and 48 seconds iv wowed, laughed, smiled, had my mouth wide open in awe and then shock and now im leaving with a lump in my throat
in less than 15 minutes iv felt more emotion than I have through 2 hour long films, you people are incredible and although im feeling down from the final scenes im really inspired to continue with Beep.
Nobody makes me feel my own feels!
At least you're not feeling someone else's feels, because that'd be weird.
Gods ten years later and somehow this video is even better than the first time I saw it. I never noticed that you can see Sintel's older face in the bowl in the beginning, or picked up on the foreshadowing when the old man says that the blade has claimed much innocent life.
It's very brief when you see the hints of grey in her hair in the beginning, which clues you in that things aren't quite as you think. Nice catch.
Still tears me up after all the years.
Same
Don’t tell me this is not an abstract of a fabulous film.

HarleyQuinn f Well...it's not terrible, it's just powerful.
Wonder Creation Studios Nah, not powerful. Painful, if you have been through similar stuff.
Wonder Creation Studios I meant it made me feel terrible. I really wasn't expecting something sad when I watched it
Back when i was in college we didn't have the technology like netflix or streaming services, so i watched this over and over as a form of entertainment. It became my comfort movie whenever i felt my rented room feels too quiet and empty. Glad for some reason i got reminded of this animation
feels sooo many feels i didnt know i could feel
This not an animation this an art of emotion
that dragons lance weapon shes using, its cursed, the old man said that in the beginning. the old guy said that the weapons has seen allot of innocent blood.
aka i think the lance is what ended up making her loose track of how long she was traveling for. and it blinded her when she entered the cave.

Marc Macoy what did Sony do?
Sony used Sintel renders in their 4k television ad campaign, YT automated content snooper picked up the matching content from Blender Channel and assigned the copyright to the one with more money.
No wonder Michael Jackson hated Sony

its a short film short films are LEGAL to be online if you nodest its here for the last three years and truly theres nothing wrong with that plus the upload of the movie its the makers of it well basicly its alright:)
Well all left is for Sony to update the License information for Sintel on their entertainment website.
amir dagan
it's not that short films are or not legal. It's that this film BELONGS to the Blender Foundation and is released under Creative Commons 3.0, a free licence.
Sony has not only no right to take it down, it has not even the right to claim it belongs to them, they have BROKEN THE LAW, TWICE.
They have stolen the work from others, not by making a small copy and watching it with their friends but by claiming attribution on something they don't own and that's a crime of slanter,
And to add insult to injury they have forbidden to the own creators of the movie to use their own Intellectual Property in the way they see fit.
I read that some people where thinking on crowdfunding legal actions against such abuses, I would very gladly participate if somebody sets up such a project!
i didnt check this out if you say so ill guess youre right

The story unfolds so nicely, and sets up a really impactful ending. An amazing tale, packed in a 15 minute long video animation which really grips at your heart.

I kind of feel bad for Scale’s mother, because she just had her dragonet taken away from her, and she might have thought that Sintil had stolen her dragonet. Plus, if you were Scale’s mother, how would you feel about your own dragonet taken away from you?
That was a shocker when you as watcher realise that she not only killed her old friend but also that she everything she had dedicated her whole life into this quest to see everything crumbles in

This was done before Cycles was introduced... how?
They did all that using the Internal Render
Agnivesh Sp I know but hoow, i thought the internal renderer was garbage
They mixed up several materials to get the desired material . You can see the some fake reflection textures and imperfections here
