A shedding of the shriveled old membrane to expose a vibrant orange haired berry.
It's a metaphor for the process of death and rebirth that is often alluded to in esoteric philosophy. The short is an allegory for a metaphysical realisation of cosmology akin to the likes of Gnosticism, mysticism and Platonic philosophy.
The other blender projects were visually stunning, if you consider that they were made using only open source software, but this one is something completely different. The character design is appealing and seems pretty independant and not like another attemp to emulate pixar. The whole fur, composition, lighting isn't just stunning for an open source software, it's stunning for a CG animation. I feel like It's about a guy or (sheep) who is depressed and doesnt feel like he truly matters cause he never saw how amazing the world really is, And if you look at the rest of the sheep you can see they dont have the mind like him and they all are the same. So, a guy comes up and hands him that leash so it can make him realize and see more of what is truly in store for life....

Beautiful, Stunning, Amazing, Fantastic. To all of us who have studied Blender and believed in Blender over the years, this film proves that our faith has been justified. But for those who see truly long-term, and are committed to Blender, we know that this is just the beginning. Blender gives to us the power to share not only imagination, but vision. Blender "gives" us the power to communicate at last, otherwise we could not afford the technology. Its just a matter of time now. Peace and THANKS.
Beautiful... this really shows the power of blender. Can't wait to see the continuation!! Wait a second. blender + cycles = washing machine *mind blown*
I'm proud to have been a sponsor of this film, I cannot wait to see what the blender foundation has in store not only for the full film but also for the development of blender itself!
I can't easily describe the beauty of this. It's just.... soo beautiful, even if it's not yet finished. I can already feel the feels we're about to feel. too much feels
They couldn’t get enough money to continue the story… this is really sad, I fell in love with the designs and the characters the first time I watched it. I really hope it gets picked up again, we still have a small chance of that at least that!
Joshua Rage I agree with you, but let's not forget its really talented people who made this look so good. Better software just imposes fewer limits on an artist's creativity.
quasarpuffs Sure. But sharing reels and short films inspires people to use blender. It is the best way to advertise Blender - to call attention on it. The more people know blender the better. Because it is open source it increases the chance that more people help developing. Furthermore blender is free, so you can't really say other software is "better". It depends on the reason for using. I think it's just great to see what is already possible in Blender and the result can certainly compete with every other 3D software. Blender is the epitome of a never ending progress.
Joshua Rage Oh, I think you might've misunderstood me. I wasn't trying to say that other software is better than Blender, just that- generally speaking- when software improves, it lets artists be more creative. And Blender has definitely improved a lot. Its gone from being a weird, largely-useless toy ten years ago, to a serious 3D creation tool today.
quasarpuffs Actually, that "weird, largely-useless toy" was an in-house rendering program being quite heavily used by the folk who had access to it, and it was designed such that they could efficiently get 3D thrown together with a minimum of fuss compared to other programs of the era. It was also crazy mad customizable, so that each artist could basically turn it into THEIR perfect working environment. The problem was that MOST folk around that time could not wrap their brains around the concept of "customizable", let alone customizable interfaces. The other problem for a lotta folk was the interface worked best with one hand on the mouse and one hand working the hotkeys, but most folk seem to think the keyboard is only for cavemen to bash on (obsolete old tech) or for typing letters and Facebook posts. What has happened to that "wierd … toy" over the years is that they've streamlined and modernized the interface while still keeping EVERYTHING that made the original so epic and awesome, and they've continued to add NEW features and improve existing ones, too. Blender has surpassed by far the $2000 Lightwave3D that I used to use, and at this point I'll never switch back. If ever I throw a pile of money at a 3D program again, I'd rather donate it to the Blender Foundation.
Bloo Alien I think I'm referring to an earlier time in blender's history than what you're talking about. It may have been longer than 10 years ago- I don't recall exactly- but the first time I used blender, it had an unusable joke of a renderer, almost no animation tools, almost no modeling tools, awful non-standard hotkeys, and no undo. It did have the snappy, customizable interface which I've always liked, but that's about it. After the foundation raised the money to take it open source though (I donated a large sum to that effort), it improved a lot, but only to a point. That's why they re-wrote it from scratch 5 years ago... But yeah, ever since then its been kicking ass. I use it for most of my work these days and hardly ever touch my old copies of Maya, LW, etc. that I paid through the nose for.
I first saw this short in 2016/2017, and over the years have repeatedly come back to watch it again. The animation and storytelling are phenomenal. And it's been an amazing long term gauge of my mental health. When I first watched this, I was overwhelmed with emotion by the end. It hit too close to home with my desires at the time. But now, there's a fondness for this short, and a connection with Franck as he enters his new life. For everyone else who keeps coming back to this, me too... me too. Waiting for the next cycle, probably forever. And to those just finding this, and Franck is a little too relatable, Keep going, something will change, and it gets so much more beautiful when it does.
Awesome ! I can't wait to watch to next cycle. Following the making of the short step by step from the cloud was a unique experience. Congrats everyone !
Man this is more beautiful than I can put to text. It felt more real than most movies. The dialog and character interaction felt real and authentic. The animation is gorgeous. I am more than impressed. I'm overwhelmed!
you could try listening to "Cold Front" by Hammock or "Nothing Seems To Make You Smile Anymore" by Baulta.. while you're at it, try 'To the Child Drifting out at Sea' by Owsey.. and if you're in an experimental mood.. try 'Listen to the Storm' by Puppet.. and if you want audio art which has greatly touched me, try the crazy glitchy, crackly and musical smorgasbord that is 'All Is Not Lost - Jilk Hazed and Confused Mix' by Nuala Honan / Jilk .. all should be available on Spotity.

Blender is (in my opinion) the best open-source project ever created! Thanks Ton Rosendaal!

Gads! This is fantastic. The resolution, the hair, grass, shadows, lighting, all of it. FANTASTIC! As a blenderhead from 2004, I love what this community does!
I have to agree with many of the comments here and say that this is the first CGI film in a long time to emotionally and intellectually take hold of me. Firstly, one is led quickly to care for the characters involved. This is (I believe) a tribute to the story writing as well as the amazing emotional conveyance on the faces of the characters. All too often CGI films seem to portray characters with either grossly inflated expressions or emotion that misses the target. This piece is simply wonderful for the realism, despite the comic-book nature of the characters. Well done to all involved. I hope if has all the success I believe it deserves.
I love you guys! This is a Brilliant masterpiece! The boundaries for creativity has been blown off by their passion and the commitment towards the project. Live long Blender!
This is absolutely marvellous in every sense: the 3d animation, the cure of the details, the acting and the story line. I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel or a full movie.
A few months while back Blender already made the announcement to discontinue this project, for those who wondered if there's a second part. Basically it means there's no part 2.
That.....was really strange... But it certainly showcases the amazing capabilities of not only the Blender 3D program, but the artists and software engineers who made this possible as well. Good job, guys! JW3HH
The graphics is superb. Seriously, Blender is now really good enough for Hollywood movies. But what impressed me more was the film's direction. There is real art. Congratulations for all those who worked on it. You really accomplishing something.
I love how they used 2.39:1 with anamorphic bokeh. It's these small details that make it that much more realistic. This is the beginning of the Maya Ruins.
I honestly laughed really hard when I watched this for the first time because I thought the short pulled a bait and switch and sold Franck a better device to kill himself with.
I was going to make a snide comment, but then realized that just because someone is a good animator doesn't require them to be a good storyteller. Nice animation.
I love this kind of work, it's totally amazing! a masterpiece!, amazingly animated; every movement looks and feels so natural. the render is amazing! i wonder how long did this take to render because everything looks so great, the grass, the hair, the illumination EVERYTHING! and the story is confusing, but, great :D
Beautiful. Everything from the score to the graphics and voice acting...just amazing. I was entranced from the very beginning. By the end my body was covered in goosebumps. Also Victors jacket is badass
I can't even find the words to describe how well made and moving this was to me. I've always been a Maya user, heard about Blender for a long while but never looked into using it. 2 days ago I decided to look at Blender's features and the price tag. I was shocked (still in shock) to find that it's open source and free... I am donating! Everyone needs to know about Blender! Amazing...
The story is incredibly, bizarrely beautiful, and the animation is stunning. I imagine this is what you might dream if you were on a super peaceful acid trip, but also had a bit of indigestion...
it is freaking awesome Blender i loveeee it cannot wait for the second part, i wish the best for blender and be recognised for commercial use it as a lot of potential.
Idk about anyone else, but the entire sequence when the time begins to tick down up until the music stops... that whole thing had me burst into serious tears. I’m talkin the type of tears where your nose is runny and you’re sniffing in and out and losing breath type of crying. Idk what it is, they did such s great job putting life into that sheep... he didn’t even have to talk, and I would have cried the same way just seeing him run away... the whole suicide intro is deep, and perfect for this. So sad it isn’t a full movie I’m considering writing a visual novel of my own just to bring piece of mind to myself lol
Excellent work, Flawless Hair simulation and interaction with the rope, no apparent clipping, very impressive, better then some fully funded multi-million dollar productions.

So, a guy comes up and hands him that leash so it can make him realize and see more of what is truly in store for life....
*LIFE IS A WASHING MACHINE !!!*
VL VIDEOS Thank you for this. I am now making Cosmos Laundromat fan art because of that sentence. I don't know if it will be any good, but it'll _feel_ good.
I'm curious. I have googled this and came up with 560'000 results. Is this a quote of some sort?
*****
Nah, life isn't laundry, it's a washing mashine!
***** You spin me round, round, round and turn me upside down.

Hey blender! what's up? I'm here to just let you know that this is the best open movie you guys ever created and every single blender fan out there waiting for part 2 of this hope you'll keep your promise and yeah that's it I've nothing else to say. love you all you guys are awesome.....
Even though, i'm not fan of shaky cams...this makes me proud to be part of the blender community xD
I fuckin love shaky cams
7 years and not continued ?
It got canceled
@@maurisa514 oh thanks for letting me know :)

I'm proud to have been a sponsor of this film, I cannot wait to see what the blender foundation has in store not only for the full film but also for the development of blender itself!
awesome and beautiful! Blender is becoming so powerful.
Congratulations
I can't easily describe the beauty of this. It's just.... soo beautiful, even if it's not yet finished. I can already feel the feels we're about to feel. too much feels
They couldn’t get enough money to continue the story… this is really sad, I fell in love with the designs and the characters the first time I watched it. I really hope it gets picked up again, we still have a small chance of that at least that!
It is enough of a good thing.
Really great looking! Render time must have been insane xD
Black Plasma Studios wow black
They use render farms dumbos
@@neferchipssuwu3011 still tho it took a while
@@neferchipssuwu3011 do you ever use blender or any 3d program in general?
@@neferchipssuwu3011 the volumetrics in this is insane
My favorite Blender studio movie. The first two close ups of Frank's eyes are amazing. This really needs a 2nd cycle.
This is beautiful .. Blender is so powerful.
Still watch it over and over again..
... Damn.
These films have come so far since Elephants Dream. This is professional quality. The textures, the shaky cam, it all rocks.
I love the music that plays at 6:36. This is the type of music that I want to hear when I start ascending into Heaven.
Alright.
Omg, thank you! What a great song!
you could try listening to "Cold Front" by Hammock or "Nothing Seems To Make You Smile Anymore" by Baulta.. while you're at it, try 'To the Child Drifting out at Sea' by Owsey.. and if you're in an experimental mood.. try 'Listen to the Storm' by Puppet.. and if you want audio art which has greatly touched me, try the crazy glitchy, crackly and musical smorgasbord that is 'All Is Not Lost - Jilk Hazed and Confused Mix' by Nuala Honan / Jilk .. all should be available on Spotity.
I'd want some trap
@@prisca5125 I just want to say that this comment introduced me to Porter Robinson all those years ago. Sea of Voices was exactly what I was looking for. I came back here to say thank you for that.
How has this not won an award? The lighting is absolutely phenomenal, the music, the voice acting... the characters... The eyes of the characters really get to me... its what really brings the characters to life. There are certain shots that just look REAL. Amazing job! MORE!!!!!
I don't know why but I laughed so hard at "With my fuckin' hooves"

Well, that should answer how a sheep was able to create his noose :)

I keep searching for the 2nd cycle...still hoping it will be a thing! Love this so much - beautiful work!
An animation where kids are not the target! Yay!
One that is 100% made in Blender! YAY!!!
This needs to be turned into at least an hour long film. I would pay to see it. Someone do something!!
Oh, this was amazing! First Blender Foundation movie, where I forgot that the movie is supposed to show off Blender. I just enjoyed it! I love how it is taking it's time. There were places, where I was just saying Wow!
This is what makes me proud to be a Blender user! When I saw this for the first time a while ago, I was blasted away by the animation, lighting, texturing, etc. It is so well animated!
This short film proves that you don't need expensive software that cost you thousands of dollars to make animations with professional quality! Blender is (in my opinion) the best open-source project ever created!
Thanks Ton Rosendaal!
this has more realism than live action movies that use green screens
I don’t know about any of you guys, but after watching this, I definitely value my life a lot more. Such precious gifts we’ve been born with. The gift of knowing. Curiosity. Will. Love. What a spectacle life is.
YEEAAAHH !!! start very compelling. Congratulations to all the team of Blender. I really love the story, this deserves to be known worldwide, Esther Wouda did an excellent job, I like animations are made not only for children. The quality is excellent, where I work use Maya, but my boss is putting together a team to use Blender. A hug to all those who worked.
still my favourite blender open movie project
Everything.. EVERYTHING was simply BEAUTIFUL; the mind-boggling details put into the fur, hair, sincere eyes, gorgeous lighting, the tornado of colorsssss - THE ENTIRE RENDERING IN 720p and up, URGH
Yes, this needs to be a movie. I almost cried. God yes this says a lot in 10 minutes. Keep making good animation like this. And I want to see more of this animation.
Excellent work. It's impressive to see how far Blender as come from the Elephant Dream days.
Truly stellar work.
I am an avid user of Blender since release 2.71. Working with this software makes me happy. Even more when I see how successful the people behind this great product can still realize such beautiful projects.
I thank you all for my good time with Blender and your commitment.
.......that was single handily the best animation related thing I've seen all year.....
Impecable.

Man, the visuals were stunning, and the absolutely fantastic music BLEW me away! Well done! Can't wait to see the rest of Cosmos laundromat when the others collaborate with you.
Absolutely breathtaking! The work that went into this is so underrated. This should’ve been shown in theaters as a short film.

A total work of utmost love and oh, I've fallen in love with the story and how you put it to picture instantly! Can't wait for another installment, epic ideas and execution thereof!
Holy crap, this gave me such goosebumps. Both the visuals and the story really spoke to me, I like this kind of stuff. Can't wait for the next part.
Gads! This is fantastic. The resolution, the hair, grass, shadows, lighting, all of it. FANTASTIC! As a blenderhead from 2004, I love what this community does!
Coming back to this after a long time, and I must say the sound design is insanely well done.
WOW. THIS. IS. AMAZING. Can't wait for part 2!
I think the voice acting is really good they should really make a part 2
Amazing. The whole thing was so well crafted and I can't express how much I love this preview and can't wait for more.
I watch this once every couple of months just to remind myself that innovation is still possible on this planet.
A few months while back Blender already made the announcement to discontinue this project, for those who wondered if there's a second part.
Basically it means there's no part 2.
its perfect as it is tbh
That.....was really strange... But it certainly showcases the amazing capabilities of not only the Blender 3D program, but the artists and software engineers who made this possible as well. Good job, guys!
JW3HH
That was brilliant! Can't wait to see how this story unfolds
The graphics is superb. Seriously, Blender is now really good enough for Hollywood movies.
But what impressed me more was the film's direction. There is real art. Congratulations for all those who worked on it. You really accomplishing something.
AMAZING !!!! What a great movie !

Rolando E. Rolon 24 when I watched it... Surely people that don't know how to appreciate such great things...
Kevan C Maybe they're Autodesk employees.
Yeah. Or Autodesk users. It must be really frustrating to have top quality software and produce crappy art. XD
Rolando E. Rolon Er, I'm an Autodesk user and that doesn't make me do crappy art ^^
Wrong on so many levels.
That would have been hilarious😂

I was going to make a snide comment, but then realized that just because someone is a good animator doesn't require them to be a good storyteller.
Nice animation.
I love this kind of work, it's totally amazing! a masterpiece!, amazingly animated; every movement looks and feels so natural. the render is amazing! i wonder how long did this take to render because everything looks so great, the grass, the hair, the illumination EVERYTHING! and the story is confusing, but, great :D
+MirceaKitsune as revolutionary as say, creating the first ever open movie?
There is something about this video which keeps me bringing back
Beautiful. Everything from the score to the graphics and voice acting...just amazing. I was entranced from the very beginning. By the end my body was covered in goosebumps.
Also Victors jacket is badass
that was awe inspiring :0 the animation was so realistic and so well used, it's something else altogether
Hi blender team, once more time you made such an AWESOME job, congratulations
I can't even find the words to describe how well made and moving this was to me. I've always been a Maya user, heard about Blender for a long while but never looked into using it. 2 days ago I decided to look at Blender's features and the price tag. I was shocked (still in shock) to find that it's open source and free... I am donating! Everyone needs to know about Blender! Amazing...
That's insanely great!
This is some of the most realistic animation I have ever seen.
wow... that was amazing! Can't wait for the next episode
This short makes me believe that Blender can do wonders. The only problem only happens when one just doesn't try hard enough.
This is beautiful, especially on a big retina display.
The story is incredibly, bizarrely beautiful, and the animation is stunning. I imagine this is what you might dream if you were on a super peaceful acid trip, but also had a bit of indigestion...
congratulation to the hole blenderteam for the great work.
quality is great, love the details and light setup.
awesome string physics, awesome grass, hair, air interaction with fur. sheep face texture and interaction with wood and dust. mind blowing. great job.
I just want to see more!! So pretty, so beautiful, so exciting
Awesome piece. I am proud to be a sponsor. :D
it is freaking awesome Blender i loveeee it cannot wait for the second part, i wish the best for blender and be recognised for commercial use it as a lot of potential.
Holy Crap! That was Abso-friggen-lutely beautiful!
Found this on Netflix last night. I thought it was a full feature animation film. I hope the creators get funding to make the next series!
Beautiful shots! Really amazing. I could feel for the character(even though it was a sheep) too haha.
Excellent work, Flawless Hair simulation and interaction with the rope, no apparent clipping, very impressive, better then some fully funded multi-million dollar productions.
