DJ Kenny Parker Of Boogie Down Productions describes competing against other Rap groups during live performances. Purchase the book here: www.amazon.com...
Incredible story. Scenario remix was the hottest hip hop joint in Summer 92. BDP, Tribe and Leaders were some of my favorite groups ever-especially at that time. Love these stories
1988 BDP came to Birmingham AL. Ice T opened the show and before the lights came on you saw the red and blue police lights on stage then the lights came on with a cop car and Colors dropped. He went on to give a great show. Next up Biz Markie came out and had a fake brick wall behind him with graffiti on it. He killed it especially with the dancing. Next up was Dougie Fresh and he had like a clear booth similar to a phone booth where he went in mid performance it was filled with smoke when he went in and he changed outfits and came out and killed it especially with the beat boxing. BDP was next butet me skip to the headliner Eric B and Rakim. Rakim came out of a pyramid sitting in a kings chair. Eric B was above the pyramid on the onest and two's. Back to BDP. When the lights went out after Dougie's performance I'll never forget. KRS ran out followed slowly by the rest of the crew and I'll never forget he ran out and just said Ah Shit and said Birmingham y'all ready? Let me tell you about where I'm from. Then went straight into South Bronx. To me he had won already not to mention he was then and now my favorite and the one I wanted to see most that night. But he came out with no props. Everyone else had a prop. He just came out of I remember correctly in those shorts that were called Jams and he proceeded to JAM. Dopest part was after Eric B and Rakim who killed it too finished the show and we all excited I had the honor to walk right pass Biz and Kris standing outside the venue just chilling talking to the people like they were regular guys from there. I got to tell Kris he was the best MC Ever and he gave me a pound and said I appreciate that man. Best show I've ever went to.
August 1987 Juice Crew/BDP concert at the War Memorial in Trenton,NJ 2 weeks before Scott La Rock was murdered. Shan performed Kill That Noise and when the Hook was about to drop he told the crowd to say this when they sing South Bronx. When BDP performed South Bronx the whole crowd screamed KILL THAT NOISE!!!! To the point where Krs said Phuck that and he started saying KILL THAT NOISE right along with the crowd
@@Cameo718. the thing is this Biz went after Shan and had the longest set almost an hour then BDP closed the show so for the crowd to remember what Shan said shows Shan’s power at the time
i remember almost the same damn thing happened at Beacon Theatre! Q Tip was not feelin the low energy of the crowd so he stopped the music mid-song and asked for the lights to be cut off. Sure enough, Scenario remix came on with the Hood intro and when the lights came back, all of LONS was on stage going crazy. BDP performed that night as well and yall were DOPE. In fact, after that night I always spoke about the amazing stage presence and energy of KRS live... but that Scenario rmx was the killer of the night. Crowd went bonkers, me included. For reference, Fu-Shnickens performed too, and R Kelly closed it out. Thanks, Kenny.
Yep! That was a Jive records Showcase. I didn't see all of Tribes performance that night. I do remember I was wearing "40 Below" Timberland boots that night. LOL
I've been fortunate enough to see you guys live multiple times over the years and I've said repeatedly that BDP/KRS is the best live hip hop I've ever seen (and I've seen pretty much all the greats). Kane is great, Tribe is great, Rakim is amazing...but BDP is just on a whole other level. I hope you never stop telling these stories.
1992 gave us some of the dopest hip hop bangers : They want Efx, Troy, jump, jump around , the head banger and offcourse the scenario remix. This is when the hip hop stomp was at its height. Bdp also had a dope song during this period , the we in there remix by Ali shaheed, very underrated if you ask me. But the energy of summer 1992 was one of the dopest in hip hop history.
I went to college in Rochester NY in the early 90s .. I’ll always remember how hype parties got when that Scenario remix got played .. one of my favorite songs ever ..
Great Story! In 96, I interviewed KRS for URB Magazine. The interview took place in Greensboro, NC. At the time it was just KRS and his then manager, Wesley. KRS asked the promoter to have a local DJ show up to back his set. Well, the show starts and after about 10 minutes KRS kicks the DJ off the stage, walks out to the tour van and brings back a beat machine. He plugs it in on stage and starts tapping out beats to rock over. In all the interviews and shows i covered, that moment still reigns number one. Must love and respect!
I went to many of those rap tours back in the 80's & 90's and trust me, seeing RUN-DMC live is the equivalent of having a religious experience. I remember seeing the ENTIRE BDP perform at the dope jam tour in 1987 I believe. Still got my ticket stub. Big ups Kenny for these great stories!
maaaaaaannnnnn, hearing these stories gives you the chills! a lot of these venues we've been to or seen...these moments we lived them..these songs..artists...maaaaaaannnnnn...this is good ish!!
Yeaa dem good ol hip hop chills n goosebumps lol Dese stories r golden n Kenny got a niche wit his storytelling which is very vivid make u feel like u dere
This is very true. We did a show with KRS One in St. Louis in 1992. Starting with 2nd II None, Compton's Most Wanted (US), Geto Boys, Too $hort and then KRS One. The only one of us that could compete with KRS One was Too $hort. Too Short and KRS One shows were on the same level because they had more hit songs and tour support (lights, smoke machine, special effect etc.).
Great Episode,Mr.Kenny Parker! Taking a L to Quest and Run DMC is respectable! This is what newer generations don't understand about RUN DMC and LL Cool J..they made Arena Rap ANTHEMS!!
Thanks for your honesty in your stories. It is very refreshing and adds to your authenticity. You are a great story teller. Tell KRS wasup and I will get the book.😃
I've seen RUN DMC in concert TWICE! (Apollo & MSG) they put on a hell of a show. I've also had the pleasure of seeing BDP at Harlem Week. ...KRS is nothing to play with when he hit's the stage. ...he's a true master of ceremonies.
Kenny this was sooo good. I grew up on. BDP, Tribe & Run-DMC. I wish I was at the shows you were describing. Peace ☮️ to MC Hood & The Late Great Jam Master Jay 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
@DJ Kenny Parker please, please, PLEASE... talk about the battle btwn The Intelligent Hoodlum & Lord Finesse when Tragedy called out KRS to battle at the Octagon!! after his performance he called out KRS and offered 10K to battle but Kris was like 'nah shorty, but you can battle my little mans tho' ... i've NEVER heard anyone speak about this.
Great storytelling bro. I AM OLD SKOOL, so yeah I feel every word you said. Been rocking hip hop since early 80s. And again your book rocks hard. RESPECT
Okay so you're speaking of A tribe called quest, I saw A tribe called quest, Lons, La, and PE. If I'd known about the Scenario remix, knowing all the components were there, this guy would have lost his mind! 🙌💥. Keep the stories coming man
These stories are epic salute to you KP... love ya content my brother... I remember this Era of hiphop and the way you tell the stories to go with my memories is the crescendo of hiphop history to me!!!

Kenny’s right. I was at that show; "Hot 97’s History of Hip-Hop Concert"@MSG in ‘97: BDP, Public Enemy & Run-DMC. Fat Joe, Tom Morello and other acts were in the audience with me like regular fans that night. BDP & PE are world class performers and they killed it as usual. But Run-DMC were in rare form that night; they COMPLETELY destroyed & blew every other heavyweight off the stage. To this day it’s the greatest Rap performance I’ve ever seen.
