I remember seeing an interview with Scott LaRock in a small newspaper when Criminal Minded was not yet huge but buzzing - they kept focusing on the James Brown loops because that was bold sampling and Scott said something to the effect of - by the time you get sued, you're already rich and famous. It was a real "kick in the door and get famous by any means" quote! Great vid sir!

From the 80's sampling was used , that is hip hop , with a cut , and keys 6 seconds or less is what is alloted now , I believe , but not like before when DJs sampled whole 20-30 second samples and looped them and cut them with the Alai/Roland/korg beat machines or later cubase or pro tool programs But there a affect with hip hop and sampling that is missing from today's hip hop as well as scratches

Never pay an artist for the use of a sample, pay the publisher. If the publisher and artist are the same person, then fine, but you need lawyers and legal paperwork for sure.
