One of the reasons Rhum Barsbancourt has a unique, subtle smokey, oakish, grassy/earthy/herbally character without a lot of sweetness is they manufacture it differently. I believe they use sugar cane juice extract, and then ferment/distill instead of the molasses initial process the sweeter rums typically associated with other Caribbean rums.

The 15 year is where it’s at!

  • @jasono.1629

The 15 yr is pretty good for a daily drinker. Although I found out they do put caramel inside the barrels so it’s not a pure rum, there’s additives.

  • @apparaoapparao

Yes, also love the rum reviews. The rumor is the Rhum Barbancourt water supply hasn't been the same since one of Haiti's horrible earthquakes, but I do like its smokey, herbally, earthy character. El Dorado 12 used to be the best value around, but I think the word got out.

One of the staples on my bar. It is used in a wide variety of rum cocktails.

I would love to see some Hampden Estates rum on here. Either one of their staples (8yr, Great House) or one of their special bottles like Pagos which is a delicious super funky Jamaican rum aged in sherry casks.

I challenge Jules to present the scoring system without looking at his sheet next video! Dillon, Dutch…remove the card and see how he fares 😂

  • @seannelson29

This is a great as a rum cocktail bottle that won't overwhelm people who haven't explored rum in depth. It's also good as an intermediate bottle for people wanting to move beyond Bacardi, sort of like Wild Turkey 101 for bourbon, since it has elements of a lot of different rums, but with none of them being dominant. Depending on what a person likes, the slight funkiness can open them to Jamaican rum, the slight grassiness can open them to rhum agricole from Martinique, the slight sweetness can open them to Venezuelan rum, the slight oakiness can open them up Barbados rum, and the smoothness and lack of hard edges can keep them in Puerto Rican rum.

Awesome stuff, would love to see some stuff involving Hampden Estate, especially either their newer release Pagos, or a drinkthrough of their 8 Marks collection. Terroir Volcanique from Rhum JM would also be another fantastic rum to put through the gauntlet if you wanna stick with the sugarcane distillate.

I just picked this up last week to try a cane juice rum as everything I own is Jamacian/molasses-based and I was very impressed; especially for the price point. As it pertains to my palate I get tons of tea notes that I really enjoy. Lots of lighter, herbacious notes too (a little mint?). I think it could stand to have more of a finish but for the price point I think it's great for a regular sipper.

  • @pierre8755

Barbancourt is not french style rum that is call "Agricole" because it is not fresh sugar cane juice.

  • @ositofreitas

Would love to see you guys to an overproof rum run through. Rum Fire, Wray Nephew, Plantation OFTD and Rhum Bar Overproof. Plenty of others.

  • @alexanderslobas

    Please do Port Charlotte 10.

  • @DheadTV

Mixed with O.F.T.D., B8 makes my favorite Mai Tai.

  • @Old_Leo

Love the rum reviews! You all helped get me into the revelation that is Foursquare, hope you keep exploring.

  • @paulrosengarth4269

I use Rhum Barbancourt in several of my cocktails. Not the best tasting solo but it fits.

  • @Walking_Ears

Nice to see a new rum review - would be cool to hear your thoughts on the Barbancourt 15 too, I've had both and remember enjoying both, but didn't get the chance to try a head-to-head comparison, only tried the 15 once.

  • @jasoncoates1835

Factoring value into a score would make sense in a world where everyone pays the same price for every bottle, but given how wildly variable prices are from store to store, state to state, country to country, i do question its relevance. I'd rather just know what you feel about the spirit in question so I can decide whether it's worth a go at the price I can find it for, whatever that may be.

  • @RodneyHenderson357

    Need a bottle. Great juice

  • @michaelriddell2881

Awesome review! I enjoy the mix-up of reviewing a rum once in a while. That said!... Friendly request #12 for a Balvenie Drinkthrough (TM) or at minimum, for a Balvenie product to show up in a blind or Ultimate Spirits Competition
