    I have a long story about Coy Hill. Alabama ABC has an annual sweepstakes for allocated spirits. If you aren't chosen as one of the 100 people to get a ticket for a given store, you can line up to be part of the second 100, and you get to go in later, after the first 100 have gone through and made their purchases (there are bottle limits with different bottles in different categories; it's a bit complicated). This year I was number 39 in the walk-up line. The very nice gentleman in front of me, #38, was only there for the Jack Daniels products, it's what he collects and it's what he's into. He has over decades built relationships with store managers, etc. The JD rep was on site and recognized him, and came out and talked to him for a while. He was looking to get the Jack 10 year, but really wanted that Coy Hill. He and I got there around 5 am and got to go into the store at 11:30 am. Just before we got to go in both the Jack 10 and Coy Hill sold out. I felt so bad for him. He did buy a bottle of Blanton's (hard to pass up Blanton's at retail, even if it's not your thing), but otherwise left empty-handed. And I don't know, but I can't imagine all the people who bought that Coy Hill cared even half as much about trying that whiskey as he did.

      That's bullshit! I too am a JD fanboy. I buy all their products, except the college girl shit, all year 'round. JD makes these releases for people like me and #38 as an annual thank you to their loyal customers. I always register my limited edition purchases with them, I just wish there was a way we could get dibs. I hope they rework the laws to let distilleries, not sell but, facilitate purchases through retailers. Not an original sentiment for me to cry about hoarders and flippers so I'll just leave it.

    This was a great episode. I think you all exposed the strengths and weaknesses of JD Coy Hill. I look at them as character flaws. In a fictional story, you can't have a great character without a character flaw. I liked Dillon's "raw" analogy. I put it this way... Coy Hill is punk rock. Don't come to a punk rock concert expecting a symphony. What JDCH lacks in refinement, it makes up for in pure electric power. Honestly, there is so much flavor there, I think the volume of flavor overcomes the proof. It is my bourbon of the year. I have had 3 different barrels (2 at bars, one I had purchased). While they are not all the same, the discussion you had applies broadly to all of the barrels I have had. If Dillon is looking for one specific flavor... well, maybe one of those barrels had it and the others didn't.
    As to availability... welcome to the world of bourbon. And it's not changing any time soon. I have a group of friends who get together on an annual basis. 3 years ago, there were three of us who would drink bourbon. Then 5. We got together this weekend and all 15 were drinking bourbon. There is a bourbon boom. That is going to make it less available. Don't blame the distillers for that. Unfortunately, this was hyped well ahead of release. Everybody knew about it and everybody wanted it.

    Dillon's analogy made me think more of a hard hat tour. The house isn't finished yet, but you can see all the bones and what they're going for, but the developer/builders haven't completed all the finishes.

    As usual, never saw a bottle of this stuff in the wild, but my Friend did send me a small sample. The analogy I would use would be a great Puncher, but not a great Boxer. It has amazing flavor notes, despite the proof, but this expression isn't very sophisticated. I realize JD doesn't have infinite barrels of this juice to play around with, but I wonder if a batch proof version of a couple of dozen barrels would have given better integration of flavors, while sacrificing only a little of the spikiness from the SB.

  • @tada6631
    @tada6631 2 года назад +1

    I totally disagree with you guys about the value. This is a great value at $65/bottle considering the amount of undiluted alcohol for the money. Difficulty in acquiring it should not be a factor to determine value. Dillon's difficulty experience in getting this bottle is what most of us go thru with most of all the higher end whiskeys. Buy for most of us this would be a min of triple the price.

  • @tmc1967

    Honey Barrel is NOT a barrel that tastes like honey. It is a rare, perfect barrel that age, wood and spirit have combined to make an exceptionally good whisky. It’s that 1 in 1000 or 1 in 10000 exceptional cask. If it has honey flavors or not is irrelevant.

    • @rangeradams
      @rangeradams 2 года назад +2

      This is absolutely incorrect. Honey Barrels literally have a taste of honey. Stop spreading corporate marketing BS, saying that everything "good" is "honey". The reason the term came to be and why it's always been associated with Fitzerald and Van Winkle was because of the wheated mashbill barrels that were handpicked with nuance of honey coming out of stitzel weller distillery. The entire reason for Pappy Van Winkle insanity is exactly this term "honey" and the flavor associated with it. Folks who have had the very old 15 year Pappy out of the stitzel know EXACTLY what this means. I would argue in most of the new "Pappy" from buffalo lack that nuanced flavor and probably why people can get away with selling this rewritten history.
      But guess what, if only a few hundred barrels out of a 2.5 million barrels produced per year has "honey" (not the 1 in 1000 that you speak of - are you kidding me?), how can you sell your shitty brand to the public? Well, get Shanken and Cowdery (who are in bourbon marketing's pocket) to put out an article on Whiskey Advocate saying that "we don't know if it really exists" and whiskytube morons following suit by saying "there are honey barrels EVERYWHERE!" . Well, if they change the phrase to mean any damn barrel coming out of any damn distillery, of course you can call any bottle the "honey barrel" and sell it to the idiots buying up the hype with no flavor. Magnus came out with sourced "honey barrel" blend that taste like shit and I can see why whiskeytube echo chamber buys into this crap.
      TLDR; Honey barrels literally taste like honey. But now, since marketing took over, honey means anything whiskeytube and Shanken and co wants it to be. Give me a f-ing break.
