He taught me a counter when someone kicks you, showed me multiple times at a slow pace so I could understand how it worked. He then asked me to "kick" him, which I did. I did a little Muay Thai. It is a great martial art. The clinch is awesome and you learn how to move around really well with Muay Thai. The classes force you to hold your stance for long periods of time to the point where your shoulders hurt from the weight of your arms. They will not allow you to put your arms down for hours. Practice movements were drilled hard. We did Ju Jitsu 2x a week at that school. It taught me how to put combinations together keeping distance and then choosing to go in close quarters and grab your opponent in a clinch. If you have Wrestling, BJJ, Boxing or Judo, all your game is going to get a lot better with some Muay Thai. I was able to get in there with some good fighters after a few months at that school. It was awesome. We had 2 Muay Thai champions for sensei. They were the best guys down there in Queens, NY. Those training sessions were intense. I would die doing that now. I was walking out of class drenched where you sweat so hard all your skin is pruned like you've been underwater. You walk outside and your skin is drenched. Can confirm that a Muay Thai event is the most entertaining sports event that i’ve ever been to. The breaks in between fights were super short, the ref will hardly ever break up 2 fighters (unlike boxing and kickboxing which have to constantly be broken up for hugging), when fighters do clinch they stay busy with trips, elbows, knees, punches etc. Its just a lot of fun and the fighters are always respectful before, during and after the match.
Those mother fuckers are hard as nails. Had a friend in high school who got hella into it, I swear that dude wanted pain. He was a legit weapon, but he was always hurt. But it seemed self destructive after a point, like he had pushed past that last boundary and there was nowhere to go except for long term, chronic pain early in his life, and for the rest of his life. He was a very strong fighter who knew how to win. Anyways by the end of the fight the my guy was losing pretty bad, and other fighter was going about the ring showing off. I think it looks like the fight was over. I could not believe what happened next! A new round starts and the guy who has clearly already won the match sets about on my guy. They fight was only declared finished when my friends opponent delivered a mortal kombat skill finisher move on him. That was too violent for me 😢
It's basically a ruleset that makes the sport more varied and encourage a focus on sweeps and kicks, punching takes more of a backseat because there's lots of other options. But there's more to it, culturally.
Even the kick move is better bro, cause kickboxing counts the points just only if the kick landed or not no matter if it make damage or not so fighter don’t train to kick hard

Muay Thai is closer to a all out stand up fighting than kickboxing is tbh. They use those other joints you mentioned and allow clinch strikes which are very brutal. My ex gf's cousin practiced in muay thai, and since I have an interest in every martial art but more on the spiritual side, I wanted him to teach me a few things. He taught me a counter when someone kicks you, showed me multiple times at a slow pace so I could understand how it worked. He then asked me to "kick" him, which I did. He did the counter at real speed, without hitting me at the end of course. This shit was so fast, I didn't have time to flinch. His elbow was maybe 4cm away of my nose.

Muay thai counter??? Kickbox more position and distance?? Which mcdojo learned you this??

Can confirm that a Muay Thai event is the most entertaining sports event that i’ve ever been to. The breaks in between fights were super short, the ref will hardly ever break up 2 fighters (unlike boxing and kickboxing which have to constantly be broken up for hugging), when fighters do clinch they stay busy with trips, elbows, knees, punches etc. Its just a lot of fun and the fighters are always respectful before, during and after the match.
