  • In this episode of “TJ Talking” our Tire Information and Testing Manager, TJ Campbell, sits down with Brandon Sturgis, Global Product Manager at BFGoodrich, to discuss the Trail-Terrain T/A. The two talk about the Trail-Terrain’s creation as a counterpart to the popular All-Terrain T/A KO2, and what makes the Trail-Terrain T/A perfect for the driver looking for great on-road performance with off-road capability.

    I’m excited for this category of tire. I spend 90% of my time on the pavement but enjoy staying at cabins and getting to off the beaten path hiking trails. I don’t need massive traction but the added security against rock tears abs punctures with good on road manners is exactly what I’m looking for.

    Real world experience these tires perform exceptional for me! I switched from the BFGoodrich KO2 to the BFGoodrich Trail Terrain and these tires did nice in full blown wet weather Washington rain. I only do light duty off roading and these tires work both on road and off road real world experience.

    The problem of the KO2 is the fact that it used to be the BFG all terrain T/A tire. It soared in popularity when it came out because of it's amazing performance, wear quality and price. However BFG decided they were made of gold and got greedy. They changed the name then increased the price by a ridiculous amount to where most average people can't afford it anymore for regular use. I used to run the BFG all terrain T/A on all my vehicles but the price is so high now with the KO2 I can't afford to pay the greedy price of BFG anymore. The all terrain T/A used to be only about $800.00 but with the new KO2 $1200.00 price tag it's just ridiculous.

    I'm excited to see more from this new line up. I have AT's on my truck now and I feel that they're just barely overkill since most of the time, I'm on pavement. It'll be a toss up. But In all honesty, if the KO2 was made in the upper echelon of 17's as a P-Metric and not only an LT, it wouldn't even be a contest. But considering that it's just too bulky of a tire for my truck as an LT, I'm not even considering it. But this is a refreshing sight to know I have something I'll be on the market for since I am a BFG fan. I'm excited to see long term results as well.

    I bought a pair of them just to try them and I ended up getting the full set for a fwd minivan. They are great. Maybe not the tire for the minivan, but I can get a wheelset and transfer them to a light dutty pickup I have. I also intend to get them for a brand new Mazda CX50 along with a wheelset because in Mexico it is unacceptable to have a 235/45r20, specially for an adventure oriented awd crossover/suv.
    The only thing I would say against them is that they are not the best for heavy rain. The rubber is great, but they dont evacuate watter as well as the rest of the tires from BFG.
    Just one thing, please consider the fact thar many medium dutty and heavy dutty vehicles spend 80% to 90% of their time on pavement and the most offroad they see is a logging trail, a construction jobsite, a dirt road that leads to a ranch or similar. If you guys make them on LT ratings, you will sell them as OEM and replacement tires for mid size pickups, full size pickups, almost any van, light dutty trailers, compact pickups, almost any SUV, almost any crossover and there will be a number of people that will even put them on a sedan. Well, they can even work on a Charger police to give it better capability on grass and dirt roads (if you make it on a size that will fit).
    This tire should be available in any size you can think of (except for compact sedan, that would be ridiculous).

      All of the tires in this class are very good tires… it just may be lacking in comparison to the others in some categories. I personally like the tread pattern and the aesthetic of the sidewall design of the KO2s so for me I’d sacrifice 10 feet of stopping distance. These tires are still going to do better on the highway in wet or dry conditions than a KO2 would.

    Terrible design when the shoulders are a solid rib without open channels to evacuate water/slush/mud etc. This design does not allow water to evacuate to. The sides which causes hydroplaning. Mud cannot be ejected either.

    • @Nono-rh4lr
      @Nono-rh4lr 6 месяцев назад +1

      Ya I will never buy a tire for my suv with closed shoulder tires. I’ve had the same experience. Maybe because my tire size is wider. If the shoulder tread is closed off I get hydroplane issues especially as the tire ages.

    • @duncanpyke4777
      @duncanpyke4777 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Nono-rh4lr couldn’t agree more! It should almost be an illegal design for that reason. The same goes for installing directional snow tires on backwards. I see this occasionally and wince. Instead of channeling water/slush/snow away from the centre, it is forcing everything into the centre. Huge safety issue that people don’t understand and greatly increases risk of hydroplaning.

      Do you have these tires? They have a much more rounded footprint, so i feel like they ride mostly on the middle lugs when not aired down. On my truck they are the same as a KO2 in the rain, but much more solid on snow and ice.
