  • In this video, we compare the on-road-oriented BF Goodrich Trail Terrain and the Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail tires, examining their performance in dry, wet, snow, and off-road conditions. We'll break down how each tire handles different terrains, discussing their strengths and weaknesses.
    Tread Design
    Both tires feature a 5-rib design with two wide circumferential channels dividing the middle area from the shoulders, having paired lugs with numerous biting edges. The Wildpeak A/T Trail has less aggressive, more squared-off block shapes with unique siping designs. In contrast, the BF Goodrich Trail Terrain is more aggressive with staggered shoulder blocks and deeper biters.
    Braking Grip
    The Falken WildPeak A/T Trail excels in braking grip due to its packed middle lugs and robust foundations, providing a solid on-center feel. The BF Goodrich Trail Terrain, with its more voided design, takes 2 feet longer to stop on average in 60 to 0 mph braking tests.
    Sideways Grip and Stability
    While the BFG Trail Terrain has a consistent shoulder-to-road contact, the Falken Wildpeak AT Trail provides faster handling and more responsive steering due to its lighter weight and stable tread blocks. It completes lap tests a whole second faster on average.
    Wet Performance
    The Wildpeak AT Trail offers superb wet performance, being 2.5 seconds faster in lap time tests and achieving a 20 feet shorter braking distance on average compared to the BFG Trail Terrain, which lags due to its continuous shoulder ribs impeding lateral water evacuation.
    Fuel Economy & Tread Life
    The Wildpeak AT Trail generates more rolling resistance, making it less fuel-efficient but offers decent tread longevity. The BFG Trail Terrain is more fuel-efficient and provides similar tread life due to its lower rolling resistance and greater tread depth.
    Ride Quality
    The BF Goodrich Trail Terrain offers superior ride quality, managing bumps better and producing less noise due to its continuous running shoulder ribs and softer rubber.
    Winter Traction
    Both tires are 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rated, but the BFGoodrich tire performs better overall, stopping 10 feet shorter on icy and snowy surfaces due to better snow-to-snow contact.
    Off-Road Traction
    On Sand: The BFG Trail Terrain excels with larger contact patches and more aggressive sidewall lugs.
    On Rocks: The BFG tire offers superior grip with enhanced biting abilities and effective stone ejectors.
    On Mud: The Wildpeak A/T Trail performs better with effective mud evacuation.

    My Gladiator came with Falken T/A. when they worn down, I had BF Goodrich installed. Deep Snow and mud were great, but not on light snow as they spun and lost traction. I had these taken off and had Falken T/A installed. The rubber on the Falken had better traction on wet and light snow. They were fantastic on deep sand and the next winter the Falken were even better in mud and snow inthe back country roads.

    So basically what we’re saying here is that there is no unicorn trail terrain tire. Shocking.
    My other prerequisite is that it have raised lettering as that’s what my Outback Wilderness came with. However, the stock Geolander AT wasn’t that great in the snow.. even with AWD. Off road I was impressed as it walked up some steep loose grades with ease.
    I’ll have to decide on a tire in the next 3 months. Thank you for this comparison

      Bfg trail terrain is actually the best on road oriented AT for winter traction and performance, I would be mentioning it in one of my upcoming videos (Geolandar g015 detailed review)

    The BF Trail doesn’t evacuate water as well with the closed in outside tread. The Falkens are cheaper & a better tire all around in this comparo.

      Yes of course it does, but its just not as effective as the Wildpeak A/T Trail.

    These tires were tested on the same exact vehicle? And all tests were conducted at the same exact temperature, wetness and snow depth, with same exact windspeed?

      Yep, I tested the wet and dry performance on the exact same vehicle. Sticking with the same ride eliminates all kinds of variables that might come from different suspension setups, weight distribution, or driving dynamics. Also it helps keep things fair and consistent, so you can really see how the tires stack up against each other.
