I wonder if at 5:07 it wouldn't have been better to capture on b4 instead of playing c4 because after exchanging the pons black can play queen to c2 attacking the knight and the rook and winning the knight ?
@Felix H But after exchanging the pawns, if queen moved to c2 to fork the knight and the rook, then Caruana can defend the knight with the queen in line of fire, by moving rook d1 to d2. The rook would be protected by knight on f3
So you see, after white captures, and then black just captures. Captures captures captures, and then queen captures, and it is just a disgusting line and it leads to a well known draw
Zipkid68 and then what? After the Queen moves white is left with a knight and a rook against the Queen which is worse for white plus black has a very dangerous past pawn
You don't give up the rook when two rooks is what you have for the Queen, not unless the exchange sacrifice leads to an advantage. In this case, it only blunders the game!
It is up to you to tell us why the rook should be sacrificed, not us to analyse why it should not be sacrificed. The default position is to retain the rook unless it can be demonstrated otherwise.

They are called engine lines for a reason. They're hard to spot for human players. The player who would spot Carlsen line would be Capablanca because if you watch his games, all of his games end up with him dominating an end game by finding a single weakness in a piece formation and then capitalizing by capturing all minor pieces, followed by checkmate/resign in the end game.
Magnus actually told Caruana about the winning line right after the game. So he clearly knew it. Maybe he saw it too late? But what a fantastic game overall.
Magnus maybe saw that it was winning for white but he didn't know any better move for him. So he just played his move with confidence hoping Fabi would miss it.
2:02 I don't see how ruining your pawn structure is so bad. Sure, you'd have a doubled pawn, but it's an extra. The only downside to doubled pawns is you can't defend both of them as easily, but worst case scenario you just lose it and you're back to where you were anyway, and best case scenario, you're up a pawn.
