This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Curiously, back in those days some people would cheat with engines... but in the other direction! In other words, they pretended that they had a chess-playing automaton, which in fact had a human player inside making the moves. Some were rather elaborate, like the Turk, which could be opened and it appeared like there was only gears and machinery inside, as the human was cleverly hidden in a way that looked like there was no room for anybody there.

History also seems to record that Staunton was essentially a coward who did his best to avoid playing Morphy who would undoubtedly have given him a sound thrashing.

Multiple videos from the St Louis Chess club by different lecturers such as Erik Hansen and Dennis La Rue say the "au" like "author" in St_au_nton. As does KingsCrusher - whose dialect is the most similar to the man in question. Perhaps even more persuasively in this context is the prounciation of the chess set that takes its name after him. Search for "Staunton chess set" on RUclips and the likes of Ancient Chess, YourMoveChessStore, Raul Galvan, Los Angeles Chess Fortress will pronounce the same way. Prounciation of Staunton in a chess context seems relatively standard and uncontroversial, and does not seem to be a UK vs US thing based on these examples.
That said, in the interests of balance, the "ow" pronunciation is likely the prounciation that would be prevalent for "Staunton, Virginia" or "Staunton National Park, Colorado". Haven't done research on it, I'm simply conceding the likelihood. I'm not aware of anyone famous from the US with the surname. Chess wise, the examples I've found of the "ow" pronunciation seem to come primarily from the non-English speaking new world, i.e. among those from outside Europe for whom English is a second language, particularly Spanish or Portuguese speakers. Now, I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese, but my guess is that the sound is simply not present in those languages, whereas it probably is either present, and/or the written combination sounds closer to the way that Staunton himself would have said it, in the likes of French and German.
My conclusion is that saying "au" like "author" is the right way to go, because it seems uncontroversial in the US, compared to the "ow" being pretty confusing to speakers from Staunton's homeland.
And finally, because this is a chess channel but you've mentioned getting into your wood - this does absolutely nothing to settle the debate but should unite everyone simply in being cool to watch (with the name not pronounced). ruclips.net/video/KUZHk1fofkA/видео.html

The "AU" vowel combination is usually pronounced with the short "O" sound, such as in the words "LAUNCH", "STAUNCH", "HAUNCH", "TAUNT", etc. While names often deviate from usual grammatical rules governing pronunciation, it seems likely, in this case, that Staunton does not.

It doesn’t matter how some stupid town in America pronounces it, or how the exact pronunciation might differ regionally. Unless you’re planning to speak English entirely in a Yorkshire or Welsh accent I suggest you learn how to pronounce it in the Queen’s English, which any idiot who lives in the British Isles will tell you pronounces it STORNTON.

@Tai Chi Tube Staunton is pronounced the same way you would pronounce staunch. Or as you would pronounce Taunton. And I am from the north of England. I'm not sure what more proof would be required, and I really do not mind if agad pronounces it differently, because he is not a native English speaker and so it is easy to let such things slide.

Englishman checking in: the suggested pronunciation ‘Stornton’ is closer than ‘Stownton’ (which you seem to think is correct) but closer still would be ‘Stohn-tun’. It’s an elongated ‘oh’ sound like in the word ‘sawn’ or ‘dawn’. If you can say ‘dawn sun’ then use those vowel sounds in ‘Staunton’ and you’ll be there.

"weird moves" @8:16 Agadmator said it earlier himself. "He (Boden) really enjoys trading, obviously." He wanted Morphy to capture his bishop Be3xBf4. Boden would have his queen recapture and make an escape route for his queen. But Boden underestimated Morphy and Morphy declined the Bishop. Boden was projecting his desire for trades. The rook move was not excellent. But it had reasons.

@@awordabout...3061 that haircut is truly old-school classic. Calm water on the sides, roaring waves up the front.

  • @AlphaLackey

Also, my best guess as to the purpose of Boden's ..a5 is to prevent Morphy from getting in b4 and c5, kicking the black dark squared bishop off its juicy diagonal. I make no statement of claim as to the soundness of the idea, but that's the only thing that makes sense.
