This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Agad: Morphy opens with e4 and this is a completely winning position for Morphy
🤣🤣... a comment that deserves to be on top
"It was in this position where Bournemann resigned the game, as there is nothing more to be done here."
Win the game for Morphy
Morphy opens with the fools opening and Magnus Carlsen resigns the game.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Little known fact: Bournemann was actually Max Deutch, who mastered the science of time travel in just under 2 weeks.
He probably had to hide the fact that he is the world champion from the future as not to get caught
Looooool
Morphy while blindfolded sees moves I can't see even with glasses
lmao same
You've got the wrong prescription glasses mate.
Shouldve gone to Specsavers
We shall start the exhibition
Morphy yells: E4! E4! E4! E4! E4! E4! E4! E4!
I don't think they used algebraic notation back then so it will be more like : PK4! PK4! PK4! PK4! PK4! PK4! PK4! PK4!
@@rowdyabhi98 This is correct. Even as late as the 80s that is how we called it.

I was looking for this.thank god there's someone sane in here🙏
"offer the queen back, this is the good stuff"
100% agree
The way he left the black queen dangling before he took her was cruelly beautiful and beautifully cruel! 😁
How can he play so elegantly in 8 player simul? A true genius and more so an artist of the highest order.
I'm trying to find the stats for the whole exhibition that day. I want to know how morphy did yelling his moves for 8 games at once.

For the sake of paying attention.....No "Sorry about that" were harmed in this video😅

Hi Agadmator! Would love for you to do a video/series on Max Euwe! My Dutch pride is definitely not a bias here ;). I am gonna keep commenting till Max Euwe gets some love 😂
agad you have made chess history so exciting and fun and i thank you for that
Outstanding! Love this Saga! Thanks
Agadmator: don't play boring moves..
Me: *my queen chillin somehow at the opponent's 8th rank after 4 moves*
"Only one move wins it the way Morphie wins games...." sublime statement :-).
Look at this beauty. The king on c8, queen d7,bishop e6 and rook on f5. This should be on fides flag. This is pure art.
Agadmator:
Don’t play boring stuff Offer your queen, that’s the good stuff
I like that both players took into consideration the fact that they're game would be featured in a RUclips video over a century later and made their play a little more interesting. Now THAT'S thinking several moves ahead.
Lovin' this Morphy Saga! Gettin' good at ripping open the centre when opponent fails to castle.
Thank you for showing these games by Paul Morphy and giving excellent analysis. What moves are made in this game from someone who "sees" moves without sight of the board that baffle most who are actually watching the board. Amazing and beautiful.
This would be a crushing defeat over the board, never mind blindfold.....while playing 7 other people!
Antonio, I'm a fan of your channel and your excellent commentary with the tidbits. This game was extraordinary, so, was the gentleman, Morphy. Show more such games!
Paul Morphy was so good a chess.
#compliment because of my brother I started watching your channel but since last few videos you really got me into chess.. I think watching your videos also taught me how to play chess better 🙈

thank you agad i have been thinking about morphy every minute of every day since the last
aight
I have a fever and the only cure is more Morphy chess analysis.
Morphy Saga is the best! Thanks!
At 6:35 I think Bornemann played Bishop d8 to prevent Morphy from sacrificing the g3 Bishop on c7 because if there was only an e8 knight to protect c7 it couldn't protect b6 so white's d5 knight would move there and fork the king and queen but because Bornemann moved his bishop back, it's protected
You´re amazing Antonio! Love all your videos 😎
The bishop move at 6:25 isn't an overprotection because Morphy could potentially sac his bishop on c7 and then fork black's king and queen with nb6.
Finally the Morphy saga continues
Incredible. So much going on. And he does it blindfolded.
"What are we to do about it"
Agadmator 😂😂
Bournemann sounds like some kind of superhero name

That's the good stuff!
I'm smiling from ear to ear!
Last time i was this early Agad was still on 56k subs and i comented you will reach 1 milion subs soon brother ❤️
Morphy may well have been an artist, but he still knew how to torture an opponent in style when they refused to resign.
Maybe that IS his form of art.
And Agad said it: "He could play a safe but boring move but this be something for history to remember you" and that's what Morphy was trying to do in here and in other games. He was so far ahead that winning with style was not just an option, it was his goal. This also explains one or two of his losses where he tried to complicate and it backfired but all in all --- well, 150+ years later people are still studying his games and watch them for entertainment. So it worked.
This really is the good stuff! Beautiful game.
Another Excellent Morphy game, with more Excellent guidance and gentle tuition from Agadmator.
“That’s the good stuff!” ...Indeed it is :)
What a beautiful game. Every move by Morphy is just genius and just beautiful. Can't even imagine someone made these moves in a blindfold simultaneous against 8 people.

In this story, Bornemann looks like an obscure sidequest boss with no backstory, generic mob-based character model with slightly bumped stats, a name which doesn’t fit in the setting, and even no picture shown when he speaks.

Bornemann origins:
All I could find is that multiple sources and historian of chess and others have mentioned that he was born a man!
At 7:41 pawn f7 to F5 was not wrong or a bad move. The next move he was forking the queen and the bishop, winning a piece.
Just beautiful.

Hey Agad, could you cover the game Nigel Short vs Bobby Fischer where Fischer did a big king walk in the opening? I do believe it is an online chess game played in 2001, but I am not so sure, so that's why I ask you this. Bobby (withe the black pieces mind you!) literally played f6, c6, Kf7, Ke6, Kd6, Kc7, Qe8 and then Kd8, all in the FIRST OPENING MOVES! I am enjoying very much the vurrent sagas you are showcasing, but I found out about this game recently, and the amount of disrespect Fischer had for Short is too great for me not to ask!!
