Morphy was a great gentleman too.

It's probably the fact that he played instantly, he was basically playing blitz while his opponents played using more time than any modern classical game. He practically played adoption matches against his opponents
I love these old games by the pioneers of chess. No internet, no computer engines, limited opening theory, maybe a book or a list of games. If you wanted to get a good chess game you probably had to travel for months. With their limited resources they did amazingly well.
I love your videos. I'm not good at chess, and I hardly play, but your videos never fail to fascinate me. They are really well put together and your commentary is amazing. Please keep up the great work, you are awesome. 😊
At 3:11 you commented on 12 g4 Ng7 13 Qf6 Rg8 14 Bh6 and said black has to lose the knight now but, as I noticed several people commented also, you can defend it with 14 ... Qf8 or even 14 ... Kf8 But it leaves black in a wretched position, eg 15 O-O-O Nb8 (trying to oust the queen with Nd7) 16 Bg5 Nc6 17 Ne4 h6 18 Nd6+ Kd7 So its likely Morphy considered it better to have two pawns for the piece and an active position.... Regards
I just had to put my Stockfish desktop version to weigh in on this game to believe what I was seeing. You can really feel a frustrated Morphy in this game. That g4 move really upset him. This wasn't like he played the knight and saw g4. By his subsequent play you could tell g4 was totally unexpected. Morphy I think expected a defense of the "important" central e pawn with 12. Qe2 as more or less forced. Lowenthal probably saw it as just too passive (e.g. blocking the king B) and determined to find something else. This is a great saga. Enjoying the Morphy story. Seeing this game actually illustrates the very tough opposition Morphy had to defeat. Makes Morphy's achievements all the more noteworthy in chess history.
Someone probably said this already, but it seems to me that Morphy was just being a gentleman and allowing Lowenthal to win, more or less. He just backed off and played a fast and loose game and had fun. Fighting with one hand tied behind his back, so to speak. If Morphy won, he won, and if he lost, he also won, because he gave his opponent an opportunity to save face and shine a bit. He was already crushing Lowenthal in the match, no need to utterly humiliate him.
What about Kf8? In the critical position after white's Qf6 I mean... Bh6 met with Rg8 and then black have a harsh time anyway, but I couldn't find an immediate crushing sequence...
#suggestion @agadmator's Chess Channel: can you show some of the early Kasparov - Karpov games from their 1984 world championship match. I am curious to see how Kasparov took his time to adapt to Karpov's playing style after being down 0-5 at one stage.
Hello. At 4.33 instea d of black grabbing another pawn with the knight, why not play black queen to F6, the idea being that after white then takes your knight, you can then play knight to F3, forcing white to move his king and to lose castling rights?
Agad, plz make the video of Judit polgar vs Indian comedians game... She started the game with knight down position.. sacrificed a piece.. switched the board on comedians request and still won !! Very interesting game !
In another way to look at this game ... his father & uncle who trained Morphy whispers in his ear = "give your opponent at least One more victory so he can save face ... you know you're better than him anyway"
I think that after watching many videos in this saga that a lot of the player of that time did not lack anything but a professional attitude towards chess.
Builds on L's previous victory. L saw through every trap Morphy laid for him and avoided it, and almost invariably saw his own best offensive move. I guess he's shaking off the rust, because he looks like a totally different player than in the early games of the match.
You could defend the knight with both the rook and the king, but it would leave black in an extremely passive position with the knight pinned and black not able to trade queens cus the pawn would then attack the pinned knight.
Hello. That does actually seem to work but my guess is that Morphy did not play it as it ties up so many of black's pieces in the defense of the king. I guess Morphy wanted a more open position where he could hope for a mistake from his opponent. But who knows :)
Löwenthal must have felt pretty good after this game with confidence that he could actually out play Morphy without relying on tricks or a Morphy mistake.

1:54 Cmon Agad how can you not explain why Qxg7 is not good? It's an obvious move! Rg8, Qh6 and what?...
You will lose the e4 pawn... And you develop the rook with tempo for black. Its not worth it. Thats why knight c3 is played first, to protect e4.
