    This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
    The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
    While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
    But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

    Some of the greatest games of all time are ones a non-titled player can appreciate and watch over and over, and yet find relatively little in there that they're able to actually take into their own games, because the ideas were so brilliant and so situational that the odds of being able to replicate the winning principle are slim. This, whilst decent, some might describe as forgettable. But it's very instructive.

    From all the games I have seen, I believe that Morphy was actually quite imprecise in Endgames, simply because he didn't really get a lot of OTB practice. He generally played instantly and in endgames, that's sometimes quite costly.

    • @gmpillo604
      @gmpillo604 4 года назад +10

      Morphy didn’t have much experience playing endgames just because his opponents rarely survived that long

    • @steakanator7236
      @steakanator7236 4 года назад +9

      The endgame in general wasn't too heavily studied back then, since if you weren't sacrificing everything and smacking the other guy's king, were you really even playing chess? Still, Morphy's natural understanding of the game allowed him to play the endgame fairly well, this game notwithstanding. Game 3 of his 1857 Chess Congress match with James Thompson comes to mind: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1336498

    • @BinaryRex18
      @BinaryRex18 4 года назад +3

      He played the endgame well but of all aspects of chess, the endgame is the one which most resembles a computer. The only old player who can really match up to modern computer assisted players is probably Capablanca.

  • @pipandchuk6545
    @pipandchuk6545 4 года назад +1

    @agadmator's Chess Channel, I love the endgame, and have studied it for years. At 9:02, you mention gxf6 and of course black is lost, but what about Kxf6? This of course must be calculated, as it's VERY tricky! So, white goes KH4(g4 and WHITE would be on the verge of losing as he is in zugzwang), and then g6 by black, Kg4 by white, takes takes, and all of a sudden, black has the move e4!, because if white plays dxe4, then c4 and white is only barely in time to stop the pawn, while the black king is a very good defender of the two passed e and f pawns(but of course cannot take them). But after the black c-pawn is grabbed successfully, White is, again, winning. Just wanted to show you that gxf6 is NOT forced, and Kxf6 is defiantly, although losing, the trickier way to play as black! I think that gxf6 is just the automatic response, as it "fixes" blacks pawn structure.
    Anyway, thanks for reading, and I'd love a game in the future if that would be possible on Lichess. I'm @pipandchuk there too!

    at 5:42 - why doesnt morphy just capture the rook as it comes with check and morphy ends up winning a bishop

    • @asteraxx2262
      @asteraxx2262 3 года назад

      Ok i found that it does not work as after all exchanges, queen to d1 check (king moves to f2) then queen to c2 check picks up the bishop with a pawn

    5:41 Why did morphy not go Rd8 capture before trading bishops? It would check, forcing the queen to capture and allow a free bishop capture afterwards?
    King could try to move to f7 or h7 , but Qg6 would be mate, so the queen would need to capture and move away from defending the bishop. Am I missing something?

    The funny part is that there is actually a bar in a library that I know of. It's the main Boston public library. They renovated it at least a year ago. I was there once last year and noticed from afar a bunch of people in the middle of the day enjoying alcoholic drinks in the bar. They were all dressed like they were at the Royal Ball in London. It was obviously and unfortunately for upper-class or rich people, complete w/ a couple well-dressed hosts (in bow ties) manning the door. Not my type of place...Heck, bars in general aren't my type of place.

    Someone enlighten me. At 5:41, it looks like Morphy could play Rxd8, forcing Lowenthal to recapture with the queen and winning the bishop. There’s something I’m missing right? Morphy surely wouldn’t have missed this

    At 5:47, why didn’t Morphy not trade rooks first, so he had to retake it with the queen because of check, and then take the free bishop? Instead they just traded everything off...? Can’t really see why that is not a blunder? Anyone help please!

    Of course you should continue showing us those games you think are interesting.
    You can learn from a defeat as much as a win and those videos pain the full picture for us.
    How he won and also how he lost. A lot of us won't, for a reason or another, real the full history of Morphy or other players and so this is one of the few places that we can get the big picture without spending too much time.

  • @GeraldM_inNC

    I'm impressed. There were a series of traps into which Lowenthal could've fallen, and he foresaw and avoided all of them. He played error-free chess while Morphy didn't, and that gave him the victory. I guess we underestimated him!

  • @Exiitar

    At 4:15 why not take the pawn with bishop first rather than a knight. This way that knight can go back to f6 and even block the pawn.

      Some of it are probably miss-taps. Especially on a small phone screen. Others have read just the title "This happens to all of us" and concluded it's something about car breaking on the highway, or having a premature ejaculation. Then got totally disappointed, since they don't even play chess. Also, let's not forget sleepwalkers... or sleepclickers...
