This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Based on an internet search, the approximate value of a franc in the late 1850s or early 1860s was 2 francs for $1. Doing an inflaction calculation on $147 from 1858 is roughly $4700 in 2021. Also according to an internet search, in the 1860s the franc was said to be around the same value as 0.3 grams of gold. With today's gold price at $55 per gram, 295 francs (or 88.5 grams of gold) would be around $4800 today. So an approximate answer is something a little under $5000.

I also would have played ...Nf6 all day. It connects the rooks, gets your knight off that awkward e8 square, brings another defender over to help the king. There's a reason why i play against the computer on easy.

I love how you are so famous in the chess community but still away from all the drama, just a guy making his videos, entertaining his audience and yh that's pretty much it.
In before he creates his second account dramagmator.
While I agree with you, it's not exactly fair to word it like that I reckon. Every sport has drama due to the competitive nature at the very top and comradery and love at the bottom, with the space in-between falling somewhere on the spectrum between those poles.
What I am trying to say without sounding like an a**hole is that it's very much easier to be away from the drama of GMs and Super GMs if you're not a GM or a Super GM. And this is in no way meant as a diss towards agad's playing strength ( he surely would beat me in under 20 moves ), it's just the way I see it while trying to be truthful to reality.
That said, even the drama at the top isn't really drama if we're honest. A few people mildly dislike each other, but there is no hate involved in my opinion. I see friendly faces almost everywhere after matches, Giri and Magnus having fun banter, Fabi is far too polite to be disliked, Naka choosing to stream and talking rather respectfully about the other players while still being one of the top10 players of the world working from home. Everyone respects Vishy, everyone respects Gary, everyone is afraid of what AliReza will become.
So yeah, not much drama going on when compared to the Fischer vs USSR or Gary vs Karpov times.
( as always - just an opinion on the internet, nothing to enrage over! )

I suppose, though, that this comment was more in reference to such things as the "Botez-Hikaru controversy" (it seems that there exists such a thing, even though I haven't the faintest idea what it may be), or other "YT celeb dramas" that are bound to take place now that the chess world has drastically changed in the past year, for better (in many instances) or worse (in some ways).

The "pause the video" bit is one where you need to apply a Lasker principle. If you know this principle, you can certainly go for it. Naturally being a Lasker addict, I considered it, but settled on the quieter looking 29...a6. I settled on a6 because it's exactly the kind of weird move I'd expect Agadmator to hide. But it turns out he actually did go for the Lasker move. So, if I just played what I was taught instead of getting cute, I would have been right.

As I have already said the trouble with mere inflation calculation is it does not take into account average wages or national wealth. If you start to measure against those then the value of that pot, certainly compared to working people, MASSIVELY increases. Basically societies have become richer, back then what seems like good money relative to today in terms of inflation was actually a much greater amount.
You can read up on the technicalities on this if you research the many papers on "how much was Mr Darcy really worth". Inflation calculation is fine for a generation or two back, but not for centuries back.
Gold is undervalued by at 100% ; so the true power of purchase is closer to $8000 than $4k to $5K

I also found it, but only by "brute force". After calculating several lines and getting nothing, I thought "what about f4?", and then I realized that the knight was actually trapped and it must be the move.

I felt immediately that Morphy should've accepted the queen trade that would've enabled him to undouble his pawns. Those doubled pawns were a disaster waiting to happen, and sure enough they turned out to be the key factor leading to his loss. I wish Agadmator had looked more deeply into this alternative.
Would’ve been a completely different game since the file would be closed for both sides , could go either way again as the situation would have been completely different
Assuming you mean instead of Qe2, he sacced a pawn for the attack he has to just be worse after the trade no?
@@qazzaqstan Not sure how Morphy should have responded after Harrwitz Qb6, but I don't understand why Morphy moved his queen to Qe2 to avoid trading queens. Agadmator said he thinks Morphy just didn't want to part with his queen. I'm no grandmaster, but it seems to me that I would've been delighted for Harrwitz to trade queens at e3 and thereby undoubling my pawns. The rest of the game those pawns were a continual weakness and figured eventually in his ignominious defeat. I would have liked to hear what Agadmator thinks could have been done with some other piece instead of Qe3-Qe2. If your opponent wants to help you out by undoubling your doubled pawns for you, one should smile and be grateful for doing you a favor. Don't you think so?
@@GeraldM_inNC While it is entirely possible letting the queen trade happen is Morphy's best bet (no idea, I'm not that good), it is very understandable that Morphy would not want to trade queens in that position. He is down a pawn and has a strong attack as compensation. To me it looks like Morphy is better with the queens on the table but after the queen trade I imagine only Harrwitz could be better. Of course I'm not very good and could be completely wrong but it just feels like the doubled pawns are not yet the key part of the game.

Harrwitz' defense skills under that pressure is really crazy. Morphy was pressing with each move and he still found amazing resources. Not that it matters but look at Harrwitz' queenside pawns, he didn't really create any weaknesses so that he could manage to defend on the other side of he board while whites queen was insanely active. Nice game!

Agadmator speaks English so well, it’s admirable. His vocabulary is extensive and uses it almost effortlessly. Always finds the perfect word. He doesn’t over do it with fancy over the top words that are just used to try and impress people. He speaks better then any high schooler I’ve ever met. Even in my profession, he speaks more intelligently then just about everyone. In U.S. many can’t even speak English. There are some people that English is the only language they know and can barely speak it. I’m very impressed and Antonio, he must have a high IQ considering his knowledge of chess on top of that.

I calculated the value of the French Franc using the 20 Franc gold piece of 1858, which had 5.806 grams of AU. Hence they played for 290 Francs or 84 ounces of gold. Given that the price of gold remained steady - in USD until about 1971, I could estimate that by 1974, the value of that gold would have been roughly 13,000 USD. Whereas the USD value has inflated at 6.3X and what would be the French Franc 5.6X since 1974, we could estimate that in present-day monies, they played for 70,000-75,000 USD.

To answer your question, 295 francs in 1850 is roughly 950€ today but that doesn’t mean much. By comparison, you could say that the average worker earned 5 francs per day then, so 125 francs a month. Thus, we re talking about almost 3 months pay at the time. The minimum wage now being 1200€ in France, we could say they played a game worth about 3500€

I feel like True Sight is the best esports content piece there is and I really wish that they made something like this for chess aswell.

Morphy won 84% of his games. “unbeatable” is obviously hyperbole, but he was as close to unbeatable during his day as the chess world has ever seen.

"Innocence Abroad" by Mark Twain. The bill came to 10,000 Francs. The American received the bill and had a panic attack. The manager quickly converted the bill to about 20 USD - still a big pile. so 20/295 * 10000 = 7 dollars. One dollar in 1860 = about 31.50 in today's money. 31.5 * 7 = $220.50. A reasonable wager for horses, but way too much for chess.

If you do the opera game again you should have actors playing the roles interspersed with the usual showing of the game. Create a new kind of media. I thought something like that would have been good with Queen's Gambit. Like every few moves it goes back to the game analysis until the important moves and then maybe analyze every move.

Actually no, franc value was change in 1960, so the 295 francs in 1858 is worth 2.95 "new' francs, wich is around 0.40€

According to a couple of websites I've looked at the Franc français in 1860 was worth around €2.5 - €3 in today's money - so the wager was about 1000 US Dollars

#suggestion Game 7 from the 1966 World Chess Championship, Boris Spassky vs Tigran Petrosian. Petrosian kept all 8 pawns on the board till move 31. It is an excellent game that shows the power of pawns.
Harrwitz would end up pushing Morphy to a new level;.
