    This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
    The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
    While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
    But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

    • @gorsla
      @gorsla 3 года назад +1

      If I'm not mistaken, I think the rook sacrifice is possible even without that move Morphy played. For example, if you play rook cptures on h7 and king captures. Then queen h5 with check. King moves to g8, then knight to h6 check. King moves to g7 and then you play rook to f7 with check. Here, black could move the king to h8 but then knight to f5 with check from the queen and black stands no chance. If he protects with his rook then he loses the queen and if he plays king to king to g8 then queen to h7 is checkmate

    There are some masters who say if Morphy appears again to play today,s chess he will come out as loser. I do not think so as he had the ability to grasp the game with one look at the board. Some speak about the modern opening theories and variations. Morphy could master all those things in matter of a few months and then even Carlsen will look ordinary.

    Imagine being so strong and sure of your skills that you have to bait some of the best the game has to offer at that moment in history into a match by losing against them, and when you are done pretending, not only claim that your opponent won't win another game, but actually keep your word. No wonder Staunton crapped his pants and never risked it. What an amazing prodigy Morphy was.

      He had every chance to do what Anderssen did after losing to Morphy and then to Steinitz. He could admit he wasn't the very best player in the world, but he was still very very good. He analyzed his losses learned better endgame techniques, and he became a stronger player than he was before his losses. He stayed the second or third best player in the world until his death, and his opponents only had good things to say about him. Harrwitz chose his path.
      But, to be fair to Harrwitz, he did actually fall seriously ill when he claimed he had to end the match for health reasons. He wasn't retiring a sore loser.

      But he wasn't even angry. Remember two games ago after his third loss in a row Harrwitz grabbed Morphy's hand only to find out that his pulse wasn't accelerated.
      Morphy was THAT sure about himself that being behind 2 games isn't even exciting to him.
