This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Morphy after this game: It really doesn’t take much to beat this fellow. Only a good night’s sleep
Actually, I can beat him even while being awake for 7 consecutive days (if my body allows it!) :)
Fucking lmao
After Nh6+, Kg7, isn’t there Rf7? 10:17
@@ceoherohub2584 Rf7, Qxg7, Nxg7, Kxg7 and you're down 2 points of material with no attack.
@@ceoherohub2584 Buddy j think what you are saying is right.I hope harrwitz will give up his queen for having two rooks and a bishop.I think morphy is not interested in any of these even though the dark squared bishop on e7 is not such an active piece.
"Feel free to pause the video here and punish our good friend Daniel Harrwitz for his insolence!" Oh! Poor Harrwitz😓☹️
I died laughing

The extra knight hopping / pawn grabbing after that was exceptional bonus punishment.

Thé quality of Morphy’s games are astonishing.
Harrwitz shouldn't have talked that smack.
He's eating his foot now.
I like to make people believe that they can beat me at first, then I watch their ego take a huge hit! 😈
@@nevinkuser9892 I remember that he actually ate his foot back then! :P
Quite a comedic person he was, Mr. Harrwitz!
@@nevinkuser9892 It only gets worse for him.
meanwhile morphy is such a gentleman
Paul Morphy video was very cool! He's one of my chess idols, since he was from New Orleans, where I grew up and learned to play chess at age 9, 59 years ago! 😎
Agad : Find the best move
Me : Definitely Rook sac... I am the best
Agad : I know all of you must have thought Rook sac it but that's not it
If I'm not mistaken, I think the rook sacrifice is possible even without that move Morphy played. For example, if you play rook cptures on h7 and king captures. Then queen h5 with check. King moves to g8, then knight to h6 check. King moves to g7 and then you play rook to f7 with check. Here, black could move the king to h8 but then knight to f5 with check from the queen and black stands no chance. If he protects with his rook then he loses the queen and if he plays king to king to g8 then queen to h7 is checkmate
@@gorsla That doesn't work because after Rf7+, black just captures the rook with the queen, and after white recaptures with the knight, the position is winning for black.
@@jamesviola7715 Knight on h6 protects the rook so if black captures rook he loses the queen
@@gorsla Yes, and that's winning for black. 2 rooks and a bishop vs a queen.
Wow this game taught me a valuable lesson that sounds like common sense-- that if a move seems intuitive but something is blocking it, look for other ways to divert or attack that piece..
Move order is super important! and always worth keeping in mind, never give up on an idea just because you can't play it yet.
Eric Rosen had a whole thing about that exact concept
last judith game was the same..in top level this is most imp thing i think.. accumulating smallest advantages. tempo moves
@@PrinceChauhan010 I think it's no more than flipping a coin. If it works, you're a hero. If it crumbles, you're a dunce.
You would still be 1000 rated, mark my words
Hey man, so I’ve picked up chess again during the pandemic it’s a good way to use my brain while in quarantine. When I started 6 months ago i was around 400 rating and have steadily risen up to about 940 today. For the past few weeks I’ve been stuck at this range 800-920 and since I’ve started watching your videos I’ve really be able to learn a lot and get better. Thanks!
The picture of Paul Morphy reminds me of “Harry Potter” technology. Pictures that are Alive.
well spotted.
i don't know how many such ai creations have you seen, so i don't know if you realized how excellent of a quality this one is. no glitches, no artifacts. it looks amazing. someone(s) put a ton of work and tweaking into this, possibly even months of work.

Mr. Paul Charles Morphy after 8 hours of satisfying sleep: i'm gonna end this man's whole career
It looks like Morphy didn’t like it when Harrwitz described him as “decent”. Now he’s going all Super Saiyan on his ass.

2:33 - “Wow” - this was awesome and made me laugh. Thanks for the video agadmator, loving the Morphy saga.
12:55 is why we all love brother agadmator - the guy has passion and just can't stop living this amazing game!
The Morphy AI video was the first one I've seen that didn't creep me out. Very cool, thanks for sharing it.
The pictures for Morphy and Harrwitz seem to sum up there emotions in this game perfectly
The Pride and Sorrow of Chess hits differently after seeing Morphy smiling like that with a tinge of sadness in his eyes ):
LOve the Paul Morphy moving image, very much like a mini film short. Thank you!
Most of todays series on various streaming platforms cannot compete with the tension Agadmator's saga provide.
I first saw this technology two days ago - and knowing the difference between this and gifs - my mind was immediately amazed and taken back to Harry Potter "The pictures move?!?!" What I love the most about this channel is learning chess through history (Medo is great too! Lol) so I found this so fitting for breathing new life in this old world of chess!
The first time I saw this game I felt tears in my eyes on that Nxd6... considering Morphy was 1-2 in that moment... really touching
Dude, that moving picture of Morphy is so dope!
I like these chess match series. The Fischer candidates series was great too.
Really thought the subscriber was trolling Antonio by sending Morphy singing Dame da ne
“Hello Everyone!” -> The Agadmator opening is on the board
Haven't seen the video yet but really happy you made it to 1M subscribers. Started watching your channel during 2018 World Championship and have been amazed to see how much chess (and your channel!) has grown during that time. As someone that never really played the game as a child, you sparked my interest as an adult and I really appreciate that. Thank you for making me see why chess is so enjoyable :)
Thank you for welcoming back for the good stuff!
Another great video to add to the plethora of amazing stories, and games, that you have honored here. Best chess channel on the Tube!!!Thanks Antonio!!!
I love the "photo". Makes me wonder how close to reality the idea of people moving in pictures from Rowling's Harry Potter universe could be.
And it was in this video that Paul Charles Morphy gave the whole world a smile.
I've seen this software effect before, recently. It really is quite astounding. I thought that the rendering of Paul's facial mannerisms looked completely natural and realistic.
#suggestion Now that this software is available, I'd like to see agadmator use it to introduce other past greats who never lived long enough to be captured on motion film.
What historic chess match do you wish we could see? Morphy vs. Tal is an obvious choice
Morphy vs Fischer would also be fantastic
Also Morphy vs Capablanca
capablanca vs tal :O
Morphy vs steinitz
Prime Magnus vs Prime Fischer,Kasparov,Karpov.
Gosh that AI video of Morphy is incredible! There he is! There's our guy! Haunting. Almost like travelling back in time.

Loved the Morphy "video" Antonio! You always bring us cool stuff like that.
Great analysis.
Loving this series
As a chess player the theme of getting totally overwhelmed by an opponent to the extent that your whole game disintegrates before your eyes is very familiar and to see it occur at such a high level very reassuring.
Thank you!
Incredible video simulation!
1:17 what sorcery is this!!???
I didn’t know this was a magic channel lol
After I heard, "Daniel Harwitz resigned the game", I became happy for no apparent reason.
So impressive Paul Morphy's video !
Brilliant video. Cheers Antonio
The Morphy video was very cool, very creepy too, but interesting.
Great show. can't wait for the next episode
Harrwitz' hands were shaking before he made moves in this game, and got postponements for "sickness" before completing the match.
We need a movie about Paul Morphy's life and his chess adventures. I would enjoy it so much! Thanks for the great content once again!
Not that fascinating life. He won many games and then his rest life was a blunder.
That AI video was really cool, a piece of history brought to life. Come for the chess stay for the technological voodoo
An amazing clip, but scary.
That photo that became a video is awesome.
That Murphy picture moving was pretty cool xD
2:30 Even Agadmator had to acknowledge his disappointment with those pair of "captures" going so wrong👌🏽😂
Agadmator: Congratulations on not sacrificing the rook on H7
Me who could only think upto RxH7
Same. I wish I'd thought harder about this one. It would have felt so good to find that pawn move.
@@josheike3543 Engine missed it.
@@a.m.armstrong8354 Ah, that's not a good sign for me. I certainly wouldn't find c5 in a real game. I think the hardest part is knowing there's a crushing move in the first place. What a great channel is this. In the video we have great chess content and in the comments we have great fun content. That's why we are his EXCELLENT SUBSCRIBERS
I love these Morphy vs Hatwittz videos :D
Morphy is just toying with this guy.. loved it.
There are some masters who say if Morphy appears again to play today,s chess he will come out as loser. I do not think so as he had the ability to grasp the game with one look at the board. Some speak about the modern opening theories and variations. Morphy could master all those things in matter of a few months and then even Carlsen will look ordinary.
and in this position Morphy did transition to a MONSTER MORPH
Morphy's rook on the f file was pretty much a security guard holding down the fort.
I am happy Agadmator uploaded and analysed an excellent game of chess but I also have a sense of loss as it means I have to wait until tomorrow to watch a new video...
Imagine being so strong and sure of your skills that you have to bait some of the best the game has to offer at that moment in history into a match by losing against them, and when you are done pretending, not only claim that your opponent won't win another game, but actually keep your word. No wonder Staunton crapped his pants and never risked it. What an amazing prodigy Morphy was.
Absolutely the best that history has given us.
He had every chance to do what Anderssen did after losing to Morphy and then to Steinitz. He could admit he wasn't the very best player in the world, but he was still very very good. He analyzed his losses learned better endgame techniques, and he became a stronger player than he was before his losses. He stayed the second or third best player in the world until his death, and his opponents only had good things to say about him. Harrwitz chose his path.
But, to be fair to Harrwitz, he did actually fall seriously ill when he claimed he had to end the match for health reasons. He wasn't retiring a sore loser.
its really very nice the morphy's pic.
That AI footage is fantastic! Quite remarkable!

@@rahulkhanduri2471 Are you ok? Bad day maybe?
Bruce Banner was quoting Paul Morphy when he said, "You won't like me when I'm angry."
But he wasn't even angry. Remember two games ago after his third loss in a row Harrwitz grabbed Morphy's hand only to find out that his pulse wasn't accelerated.
Morphy was THAT sure about himself that being behind 2 games isn't even exciting to him.
Murphy's words are always alive
Daniel Harrwitz is certainly ahead of his time with the types of lines that he played. However, Morphy is just a phenomenal player for this period and would certainly give some modern players a good fight. Just also want to say a big thank you to agadmator for his content on this channel. My own chess game has improved quite a bit since discovering his channel. I have been playing chess since I was a kid and really do love the game.
The Paul Morphy Ai is absolutely fascinating. We are one step away of recreating him entirely lol
and it was in this position that Daniel Harrwirtz did not want to be welcomed back to the good stuff because he wasn't here to enjoy the show
Morphy knew how to promote a knight to a "monster knight".
I have read it as a " Not a single shame" before watching the video :))
7:36 That is indeed a comically large fork.

That video is AMAZING. Makes you want to say hello to Charles Morphy.
yeah boiiii i'm so happy i waited all day for this
Love the video of Morphy! Very cool!
It's uncanny to see how the AI makes Morphy face very life like during that animation.
After seeing that animated Morphy head I checked if Tal would wink lol
The technology is obviously still evolving but it's really amazing to see what morphy might have been like in life. Clearly more awkward and less handsome than in his more flattering pics, but you can sense the shyness and inhibition that may have lead to his tortured self-denied final years.
I read he became a lawyer , had memorised the complete book of Verbatim which I assume is some great big door stopping lawyer hard book classic, but they thought he may never had represented a case
@@Foxtrottangoabc yep, he memorized the _entire_ 2000 page Louisiana legal code at age 20. Which is insane. IIRC his issue was that people never came to him for serious issues, they just wanted to get autographs or play chess. So he got fed up and threw In the towel (his family was insanely rich so he never had to work a day in his life after that).
@@BinaryRex18 thanks great info . 2000 pages is pretty amazing, probably small print too ! , I was kinda assuming mental health issues got in the way of his career but your info makes more to it . Fascinating person 👍
I must agree, that Morphy video is awesome!
Ortueta -Sanz, absolute beauty of pawn power #suggestion
That computer simulation of Morphy moving creeped me out and got me to thinking that maybe in the not to distant future they can have video of people doing all kinds of compromising things, that they never did. And then even video will no longer be reliable. Technology can be used for some truly terrifying things...
I am debating if I should wait for the rest and bingewatch it or keep the tension between episodes
AI making the Morphy Video has a sense of humor probably from the programmer.
Did anyone see that USB he flashed us, made me chuckle
I would watch an anime about Paul Morphy. He would be such a sick MC.
