Morphy's e3 move in this game has to be one of my favorite moves in competitive chess history. It's subtle yet deadly, invisible upon first glance yet obvious in retrospect.

I once had a chess teacher that actually taught us: "1. a3 is the best move, because that way white can play as if it were black, which is better." He played it back then (when he was 2000+) and he played it in the 2019 World Senior Championship. Just to be clear: I had forgotten his name, but I found him because of his opening - he plays every single game with white that way.
@@BlueEyes-WhiteDrag0n It was for a single year, now over 20 years ago when I was 10. Do you remember the name of every teacher you ever had in school, even those you had only for a year and who didn't teach you anything? Because chances are you think you do but still forgot a few.
This was an enjoyable game! Thanks! "How many of us would not place the knight on e5? But not Anderssen! He is a true gentleman." I laughed at that one!
I normally root for Morphy during this saga, but this time I feel really sorry for Andersen - it seems he was too ambitious to consider anything less than a victory and that's how he pushed it too far. It would have been nice if he won this game and got the match that much more competitive I feel :) Thanks for the great video!
Great video, I really enjoy these chess-history lessons. Also checked out the game you mentioned, it was a rollercoaster. (I rarely comment, but this is the channel I always check out first when I want to watch someting. Great work my dude.)
4:10 I'm probably missing something but it doesn't feel like exf3 en passant and Bxf3 works. Bxf3 allows Qh4+, either breaking the castle, or forcing white to go g3 Bxg3+ etc. Maybe Nxf3 is the line Agad meant to go through, it stops Qh4+. I might very well be wrong
Thanks for this saga, Agad. All the Bronstein quotes make me wonder; have you considered doing a saga on him? He was a very imaginative player-- lots of fun games to choose from.
Gosh, what a wonderful game ! But I do feel that Andersen is feeling the pressure of his losses and not always playing with full confidence in his own abilities. Also, as Agad says, he rather desperately wants a win and so doesn’t pursue Drawing chances.
After the subtle black pawn move it all just unraveled for Andersen .. They really need to make a movie about Morphy.. would be an awesome period piece.. anderson does seem to love attacking a little too much :) the trouble is morphy is now making a bigger shield for himself and letting anderson waste his troops in pushing his latest attack...its just a little too slow..although anderson is making himself some interesting chances, which he then misses :)
18:43 Man nobody has ever crushed my happiness as much as agad did there by saying queen to g7 is too cool to play. I thought it could turn into a winning idea. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Me too, but I was impatient and asked Stockfish, White would take b pawn with a rook, and Black cannot retake the rook with the queen due to the discovered check with the knight that would pick up the queen and the bishop.
For the position that you mention at 6:21, I think the white queen should take the rook on d8. Three possible continuations from that position are: 1. Qxd8 Rxd8 2. e6 Qxb2 3. Rxb2 1. This was the match of the first two great chess artists.
The most impressive part of this video is learning that there was a real human person named Marmaduke Wyvill.
OMG right I didnt even notice last time until he actually said his name 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mrs Wyvill's baby received his handle in 1815, one of his descendants copped it as well, but since then Marmadukes are few and far between, apart from a cartoon dog.
Sounds like a miniboss in witcher 3 or something
His signature move was to sit on the board, scattering the pieces and forcing his opponent to cry MARMADUUUKE! (In resignation)
It is odd that a person with such a name, playing against Adolph Anderssen in a championship match, isn't more well known.
Anderssen: Attack! Always attack!
Also Anderssen: 1.a3
