Sure enough, about 2 hours after watching this video, I had a chance to counter this attack. The knight went for my Kb7 pawn, I advanced the queen, they blocked their King in with their Rook and Bishop, I landed a smother mate. Victory never felt so awesome, thanks a bunch!

Isn't that how chess works? You play a game, in this case watch a video of a game, you think about it and memorize it, and when there is the chance to remember this specific plan, you apply the plan. There is no way to not think in chess. Memorizing is thinking. What you're saying is what I see as, 'ah shit, i'm not allowed to study for this test, because then i'm not thinking about the exam myself. I need to just know all the answers.' And I think it's perfectly fine to study moves if they're an annoyence to you in some games and you don't know the right counterplay from the get-go. It's impossible to 'remember' chess in general anyway since there are too much variables, so memorizing common moves (or a specific game which is playing out the same way as a game you've played before) with counterplay is perfectly fine and smart to do.@@ercihanates6504

This is very powerful opening! Most Fried Livers only learn the main lines and the trap line, so if you throw this opening right on their face, they'll not able to remove it out of their face!
I’d just play the traxler. I know all the lines because I decided to waste my time learning them Bf1 is the best move for white after b5 and it transposes to the ulvestad variation.

With best play it is a draw after Kf1 Qe7 Nxh8 d5 exd5 Nd4 d6 Qxd6 Nf7 Qe7 c3 Bg5 Qa4+ Nd7 Kxf2 Qh4+ Kf1 Bh5 cxd4 Qf4+ Ke1 Qe4+ Kf1 Qf4+ and there is a repetition of moves and it is a draw (yes I remember all of this). When white plays c3 in this variation, there is only 2 other moves that draw for white (this is the only place where white does not have a forced move), which are d3 and h3 (there are too many variations so I haven’t really looked at them, but stockfish says it is drawn). This means that you are incorrect, and it is not losing after white takes the bishop. Despite this, the traxler is technically losing, if white plays the bishop sacrifice line with Bxf7+ rather than Nxf7, however this is still rather dangerous for white.
@@BobChess When you enter these wild variations, no one is ready. Personally I play the traxler as black and white (the knight sacrifice line) and win most of my games because the opponent doesn’t know what to do.

I only seen he talked about this in opening tier list, which he tried to cut time by just showing some lines. Imo he already has a decent traxler video, which is why he doesn't wanna make another fried liver related opening

I love this opening and playing both sides because there are so many ways to play it.
I prefer the surprise move for black 5...b5!! White usually doesn't know how to react, so a little bit a prep by black can get a quick advantage.
Love that opening as well because the only move that gives white an advantage is Bf1 which is really hard to find

Great video, but there's one thing I'm missing. You said that white only has one safe place for its bishop: b3, so we take with the knight. But why can't they just go back to c4?

I ran this on Stockfish, it says to play Qc6, if white defends the rook pawn with a pawn forward you take the undefended Bishop, if white defends the Bishop with a pawn you take the rook pawn, at any case after taking the rook pawn you take hes knight, and if white defends the rook pawn with the undefended Bishop bringing the Bishop all the way back you fork the right rook and his King doing check with the Knights, and white ends up loosing the Queen 😂😂

I firstly knew this line from a Ben Finegold lecture about the Fried Liver, Nd4 (instead of the common Na5) was suggested by a kid, and Ben suggests this is super complicated and the main line theory goes c3 b5 Bf1 Nxd5. I didn't understand the point of Bf1, just remembered it, but this video nicely shows why cxd4 is problematic for white. Also there are quite a few master games in the main line and black is doing fine even in the main line. Conclusion: Fritz Attack > Traxler.

The traxler was the first opening I really studied and it’s still one of my favourites. But these look like so much fun, I might have to rotate the traxler out for a while to try these out!
Until you start going up against people who know what they’re doing so your games will go (after b5) Bf1 Nxd5 cxd4 Qxg5 Bxb5+ Kd8 0-0 Bb7 Qf3 Rb8 dxe5 Ne3 Qh3 Qxg2+ Qxg2 Nxg2 d4 and white lacks slightly in development but has better control of the centre and is up a pawn (also only has 1 isolated pawn compared to black’s 2 isolated pawns).
Traxler is completely neutralized above 1500. Almost everybody knows what to do
@@pritammondal9708 No it’s not. I’m rated 1700 and I win most of my games with the traxler. If you know enough, if white plays Nxf7, you can’t lose.

When I was a club player, say, roughly between 1990 and 2010 and rated around 1700, EVERYBODY in East Jutland played Nd4! So it was by no means a rare move - it was more or less the main line!
There ARE ways for White to deal with it, but those ways tend to take all the fun out of the game, which is not what you're looking for if you play Ng5. And still White has to play super accurately, while Black is having a much easier time. And if there's any fun, it tends to favour Black. That's why I quit playing Ng5.
Just play c3 b5 Bf1 Nxd5 cxd4 Qxg5 Bxb5+ Kd8 0-0 Bb7 Qf3 Rb8 dxe5 Ne3 Qh3 Qxg2+ Qxg2 Nxg2 d4, where white is behind in development although has better central control, and is up a pawn, resulting in a better endgame for white.
Accordong to chess pros and engine that move Ng5 is bad move, when you should develop your other pieces first, but most people want to go for satisfying quick attack to get some material for themselves, so they dont care, that according to chess pros and chess engines Ng5 is bad move as your fourth move in the game.

Great video, Nelson! I see this attack consistently; I usually respond by advancing my H1 or A1 pawn in advance of it. But sometimes, I overlook the threat and get decimated.
I would recommend against the anti-fried liver defense, you just end up losing the center. I prefer knowing na5

I use the Fried liver attack a lot, I can say most people don’t know how to defend it. They might unintentionally defend it, I use it because if you know your moves you can see wether he’s blocking it so I just stick with the Sicilian and still have better development. These counter moves aren’t bad but they only work against someone who doesn’t know his moves (only main line) once you let the bishop get into position, irrespective of wether the fried liver is executed or not you are already at a disadvantage.

I haven’t looked at this in a while but I’m pretty sure at 6:52 the move for white is bishop back to f1.

Yeah, what I don't get is why he is saying the "only possible move" is Bishop to B3 and then you can take it with your Knight, but why can;t the Bishop move to C4 and then as you say, it can escape back to F1 next go if required? I have tried this about a dozen times against the computer and it NEVER moves the Bishop back to B3. That's a dumb move IMO, or am I missing something?
Literally one of the first games I played and every move played out like clockwork, and smothered mate in the back. This is a nasty tactic!

I'm not good at chess but I dont see why I couldn't move the Bishop to c4. He says the only safe option is b3 but how could it be safe of you got taken by a knight and you stacking pawns to retake. Thats just double bad for you. But no pice is attacking c4. Maybe its just my 1000elo brain i can't comprehend something here but someone shuld tell my why white plays b3.
Qc6 crushes White. Either the Bishop is lost or Qxg2 next. If Bxf1, Nc2+.

You are the first person I have heard talking about how fun a position is. It's more important that the game feels fun than that my position is good.
Heres a tip for 400-800ish. after ng5 play bc5 and after they play nxf7 play bxf2 after kxf2 play nxc4+ and no matter what they do play qf6(+) most of the time people will stumble intl mate in one on either g8 or c8.
Its not nxc2 its nxe4 and also usually play Qh4 not Qf6 u only play Qf6 if Kf1
You are correct on the first point, I am just blind, but unless they play ke2 qf6 is as far as I can tell, simply better. If kg1 or ke1, they get checkmated, if kf1, they have to respond to check either moving to e1, g1, or e2. E1 and g1 lose to qf2#, or after e2, nd4+, kd3 play nf2, forking the king and queen, if ke1, qf2#, and if ke3, qf2+, if kd3, qg3+, kxe4, qf4+, if they go to d5, there is probably a checkmate somewhere, and if kg3, after qg3+ there is at least a draw and probably some kind of mate. Also in some of those paths they could have blocked with queen, but every single one hangs. If after kxe4 they play kf3, qf6+, if kg4, h5+, and after kh3, nf2 forks the king and queen, and there's probably a mate there. If ke2, qf2+, kd3, qg2+, if ke2, forced draw, if kxe4, qf4+, if kd5, qd4#, if kd3, qd4+, ke2, qxc4+, and you win the bishop and the knight, and you are up a pawn. If ke3, qf4, and either move I've covered already. Tell me if I missed anything.

ive seen so many beginner videos about the fried liver but somehow i can just never wrap my head around good responses to it, hopefully this video will cement some counterplay into my head lol
I’d say you actually don’t want to go for fried liver as a beginner if you want to play e4. There’s so many lines it could deviate. At move 3 when you finally get the Italian black can play Bc5, Be7, d6, f5 and Nf6. All of them is a good move and only one ‘might’ leads to fried liver. I’d recommend something like danish gambit since there’s not as much move to remember. Afterward you can start learning more complicated opening one at a time and saves complicated stuff like Ruy Lopez for last.

After 6. ... b5, I thought the normal line is 7. Bf1. And now white gets more of a chance to develop his pieces. That's why I normally play 5. ... Na5.

As a scicillian defense player, the fried liver makes no sense because there is no black pawn on e5 so the fried liver and any scholars mate attack gets met with Ne5 hitting the bishop while simulataneously protecting c2.
I am a low rated bullet player 1200-1450 and I've been playing this opening for at least 2 years now. It works really well in bullet games.
Love it. Watched your vid about 5 days ago and have had two games since to put it to use. First one (daily game) is still going but defense worked and the game goes on. Second game (just finished) worked exactly as you showed with the black queen checking and white having to decide between lost queen or smothered mate.

I see the fried liver all the time but didn't even know it was called that. I always respond with the supposedly rare Nd4 but never thought of the follow up Qxd6. I either went with Ne6 or Be6, which left me in a relatively bad position. Thanks for sharing this trap!
I'm 1600+. Personally, I believe that the two knights is the best 1...e4 defensive option. I respond to the fried liver w/ 5...e5. It opens black up for tactical play and white has to immediately defend his bishop.

This is why you shouldn't play the Fried Liver unless you're a GM.
GMs dont really play this. Mostly go for gioco piano etc/3 knights variation. This however is very common for 1k-1.8k elo
Literally solved issue to increase elo. I keep on losing to this trap even though I know some counter attack but would land in trouble situation.
What if white moves the bishop back to where it was on C4 instead of all the way back to B3? Any tricks there, or just attack with queen and then add a pawn to the attack when they defend?
Qxc6 forks the bishops and g2 pawn, then Qxg2 forks rook and knight ... aaaargh.
This is my favorite trap. I've done it dozens of times and it never fails to make me laugh.
Even if they don't give you the checkmate the number of queens I've taken is great.
Edit: Also, you forgot to mention the line where they defend the bishop instead of taking your rook and you take their queen.

Again you take the pawn Qg2 as with the previous line. Of course they have to defend Rook Rf1. You then attack their queen with your bishop Bg4. Most opponents move their queen up one space Qd2, to which you can fork the queen and king Nf3.
If they do the slightly smarter pawn move f3, you just take with the bishop Bf3. Now they have 3 options. 1) Sac the rook Rf3, at which point you take with the knight Nf3 and they have to sac the queen to stop the mate. 2) Sac the queen Qf3 immediately and you take with the knight Nf3. 3) Try to save the queen by moving it forward one space Qd2. At which point check their king with your knight Nc2, and they have to sac the queen to take the knight.

I usually encounter d3 followed by Kd2, the idea of which is to cleverly defend the rook with the queen. But it's actually a forced checkmate.
Yes, while most people propably find it annoying. I find it so satisfying doing it myself and succeding in it, because being rock down will then show in the endgame giving advantage to yourself. My new chess account been created in last year November 15, but I have played this frank liver attack oppening still over 200 times with 53% win rate, 44% lose rate and rest are draws. I used to play this opening before chess app in roblox chess rekting noobs and thats why I have been playing this opening a lot for last two years. This is much better trap, than any of the queen move traps, because most know how to stop them atleast.

ngl as a 600 I saw this trap yesterday but it was a Giuoco Piano Four Knights instead, and I panicked and castled, then thought it was a bad move (though I checked game review and it said best move)
tbh it was a horrible game for both sides, I only won because opponent was too focused on attacking me (they had M2) and hung M1 which resulted in my win
It is the best move because you basically trade 2 minor pieces for a rook which in that position is completely fine for black

I'm old and not even a club player, but I've been confused over when the Two Knights Defense went from a common "romantic era" opening to being called the Fried Liver.

The Two Knights Defense (3... Nf6) is still called the Two Knights defense.
4. Ng5 is called the Knight Attack, but a lot of people mistakenly call this the Fried Liver Attack because that's what White is aiming for.
6. Nxf7 (only after 4... d5 5. exd5 Nxd5) is the Fried Liver Attack or Fegatello Attack.
Playing 5... Nd4 instead of 5... Nxd5 completely avoids the Fried Liver Attack and this is called the Fritz Variation.
@@EternalSilverDragon Yes, and also the main line 5...Na5 of the Two Knights Defence avoids the Fried Liver Attack 6 Nxf7. In fact some analysis considers 6 d4 even stronger, but less spectacular.

If someone under 1600 plays Bc1 in response to b5 without a long think you can bail and report them for cheating. It's one of those cases where the computer top move isn't even in the top 10 moves among humans.
What if they're not cheating, but just know the lines? Lots of players memorize opening moves, even at lower ratings.

Honestly, I prefer the Traxler. It's so fun and tactical plus it wins most of the time.
Before watching this video, I was so scared of the Fried Liver, that I would play h6 just to stop the knight from coming to g5.
My guy who played Qa4+ at 06:55 instead of capturing the pawn. I was like "Oopss, this was not in the script. Now what 👁👄👁"

Awesome. Just watched and played. It didn't go exactly the way in the video. But the opponent had to sacrifice his queen. And eventually resign.
For people playing h6, better go Be7. It accomplishes the same, you can go castling aftee you get your knight out.
