      U.S.M.C. and chess! ... My father was a U.S.M.C. WWII vet. 1945-51. He bought a chess set to play while in the marines. The thought of Marine buddies playing chess.... I would sure like to see the moves. Later he married and had 3 boys. He taught my brothers and me to play chess with that set in the 1960's. He didn't like playing us kids once we got better then him! But he still had fun playing until he passed away in 2012. Now at age 65 I still enjoy chess for fun too, but my oldest brother was a star player in a jr. high school chess team. That team won the MN state title in the 1970's.

    what I love about stockfish's play style is that almost every game is like "me attack king" no matter what. Oftentimes it even just leaves its own king in the middle and starts an attack on the enemy king on like move 8 or something. in general, it doesn't value maintaining a pristine castled position for its own king very much at all. for it, "king safety" is "opponent too busy trying to keep their own king safe to have the time to attack mine."

    • @dialecticsjunkie7653
      @dialecticsjunkie7653 23 часа назад +8

      @@thuroria7631 Yeah it's beautiful to witness, but basically impossible for a human to pull off because you're basically having to rely on calculating every potential attack on your king, ruling every variation out, and you have to do it with perfect accuracy or your position falls apart

    • @Jartran72
      @Jartran72 16 часов назад +1

      That is so oversimplified. It does not just attack the king. It takes spacce, entombs enemy pieces. Builds up light/dark square control. Pushes on whatever side is advantageous. It just finds the best approach to a position. To say it just attacks kings.. Is such a misunderstanding. Because that is only very small part of what it does. First there needs to be some sort of advantage. Like fixing the opponents bishop behind their own pawns, stopping a rook from joining the game, sacrificing a pawn to create total control over important files with a bishop.. There is unending complexity to stockfish ideas. Some resolve around material, counter attacks, creating past pawns. Sometimes to win material, sometimes to force promotions.

    When creating these engine movies, it would be great to locate an intriguing pair of games and highlight the varied approaches of the engines in that position. For example, the majority of engine wins result from opening "blunders" before they play. So, instead of just presenting a spectacular win, it would be interesting to see why the other engine was unable to convert the similar position. I think this might be a very great video.

    And a week ago I decided to go 800 (I was 700 at a time), and now I'm 7 points to 900
    The weirdest thing is, I play better watching Levy, not even analyzing, just being inspired and stimulated, my brain thinks different. If I don't watch I feel like trash, terrible openings, I don't know how to respond. When I watch, I feel like an absolute beast seeing every move, every trick.
    Thank you Levy, I don't know how, but you helped and continue to help
    In my head sometimes some random moves and positions take place and there is a voice saying random square coordinates, that have nothing to do with actual piece placements, but this too somehow helps, just hearing pawn to e5, even though I have no clue where e5 is until I count
    Edit, 900 even!

    Hi Levy. Thank you for being so entertaining. In the commercial, the owl concludes "3 licks." But he really only licked twice. The third lick was a "bite all the way through to the center." The point is that you can never know how many licks it takes to get to the center because no one can keep from biting through. :)

    Maybe you could show 2 games from the same position and show the difference of playstyle and how the game went on both sides? It would be a good comparison of how the bots think on the same position

    When doing these engine videos, one thing that would be very cool is to find an interesting pair of games, and show the different aproachs of the engines on that position. Like, most of engine wins comes from opening "blunders" before they play. So instead of just showing an amazing win, could be cool to show why the other engine wasn't able to convert the same position. I think this could be a realy cool video

      Completely agree. I guess I could just look up the positions they both win, or seeing where Leela went wrong where stockfish went right, but it would make for something interesting. At least for me.

    My System was the first book I ever bought to learn chess. I think you HAVE to include Nimzovitch in the conversation about GOAT when you talk about it because of the way he changed the game. Granted he couldn't beat Fishcher, Kasparov or Carlson, but men stood upon Nimzovitch's shoulders until computers came around.

    I forgot the exact term for it, but what I love most about chess bots competing against each other is they are not allowed to "think" during the opposing bot's turn. Just imagine if we could enforce such a rule in human chess! haha

    you mentioned to let us know about the sound:
    usually i say i like this type of mic sound, but in my opinion a sound this dry needs some support with like music in the background or something. however the lack of sound is pretty helpful to paying attention to the lot of info you're trying to bring in my opinion too. So a little more reverb in my opinion (not too much) might be more helpful.
    hope it helps :)
