So TIL it gets cold cold and snow-covered in Iowa. Also how did you get it to operate in such cold weather? I'm in Louisiana and my cameras will alert ding on a cool day and do nothing cold days...

Alert during cold days? What cameras are you using?
I have rocked cameras even when I was younger in -5 degree weather. The only real problems are the following.
1. Battery life (batteries hate cold)
2. Bringing the camera back inside, this is where death to electronics happens. Put the gear in a backpack to let it slowly bring itself back up to equilibrium. This reduces the condensation and liquid forming inside and outside of the camera
