Cool build. Some advice from personal experience - electric carving knife makes short work of foam. For the next build, consider using high density foam as it will provide more support and better contact. Finally, consider making the padding and board removeable and replaceable for when it wears out. Your current design requires removing staples and scraping glued foam off of your bench, versus having padding and back board that you can swap on and off of a bench.

@furi all your advice is right on. Except you had to add the 'cool build'... it's ok man, you can just be honest, he's YTuber doing this professionally, it's ok to call out his rushed crap.

@@googleyoutubechannel8554 It is a cool build - I’m not trying to be sarcastic or ironic. I never would have thought to build a bench out of wood. This bench is something that makes weightlifting and exercise more accessible to people on a budget, and therefore is cool to me.

I've used a carving knife for this before and it really was a life saver. I was using a utility knife before I remembered I had an electric carver, and not only was it faster and more accurate, but it also eliminated the risk of marking up my work surface with the blade or dulling the knife on the work surface.

😊 WOW! I love all of your videos Mike.
Thank you for sharing all of your projects and plans with us. I have to say you make it very easy for us to just start building 😅
I'm currently cleaning out a room for my future Pink Home Gym. I will be making everything out of wood & cement.
I'm very exited to share my content as well for all of my ladies out there, that aren't confident with tools.
I'm very handy my self but for some reason you also inspire me to share as well my knowledge with the world and not just keep it to my self.
I will totally tag you 🎉 and give you full credit once I start building every single of your projects and many more.
    Thank you again, blessings 🙌

I have found a machete works perfect. I happened upon this by accident and is was clean and didn’t fuzz from 30 passes. It will need to be sharpened (works best). Also use slow slicing motion with the smaller foam piece hanging over counter edge or tailgate on pickup.

Use a super sharp bread knife for cutting foam! And if you are ever interested in doing more upholstery buy the Porter Cable 22gage pneumatic upholstery stapler. I'm a furniture repair man and I use that every day and it is my favorite tool! Use 3/8" length staples they are the perfect size.

I use a coping saw for cutting thick foam 😉.
And for the lining you should follow the technique for the frames canvas, so you leave the fabric tighter and without visible folds. More aesthetic 👌

Easiest way to cut foam in a flat square form is to set the foam over a rounded edge like a 5in pvc pipe or anything similar so that as you're cutting the foam with an exacto knife it is pulling itself apart on its own while your cutting.

You don’t need foam on a thick wooden bench. Wood is the most perfect platform to bench off. Padded benches came about as a strong wood bench is very heavy. When York started making steel frame benches which were strong and lighter, a surface was required that did the job (of not bench against tubular steel which would fucking hurt) and didn’t add weight.
Seriously people try thick wood platforms if you get the chance. Really comfortable and you feel everything.
I’m not having a go at your build btw. Just letting people know 👍
