I’ve been making wooden gym equipment for myself for 20 years using 2 x 4s and plywood gussets also. I only ever bolt everything together though so I can modify things more easily. Typically, you would make the holes for the bolts pretty loose so you can level the equipment on uneven floors more easily.
I saw that mistake from the very beginning. I too am glad you didn't glue it all together! Great job man! I love how you show your mistakes and how you go about fixing them. Workout tip (I was a personal trainer in my past life): I highly recommend against wearing any type of raised/squishy heeled shoe while doing any leg workout. If you can, go shoeless. You'll be able to be much more planted and ultimately push more weight, among other things.
Thanks for watching everybody! Thinking of making a couple follow up videos, one on better concrete weight plates and maybe a second on upgrades to the power rack. What accessories would you add??
Looks good! One quick suggestion. All a little lip to the end of the catch bars so that the weights can’t roll off. You really don’t want them falling.
Just needs a stop on the end of the spot supports to stop the bar bells rolling off the front. Would be good now to cut the concrete weights into actual plates so the weight can be varied. Also with the frame painted black it would look great in any home gym
a quick tip...use epoxy mix..dive dumbells in it...let extra epoxy spill down...after it dries, it kinda wrap around the concrete and do a protective layer . if u do this 2-3 times better .)
Excellent work Mike! This one has the most functionality of any I have looked at on RUclips. I'm 56. The max weight I would ever put on this w/b 300lbs. Do think 300lbs would work on this? I was going to go to HD to get the lumber and supplies tomorrow - Saturday. Thanks in advance! JD.....Anyone else who can tell me their experience with greater than or equal to 300lbs - I'd appreciate it.
To help with the screwing on/off of the spotting bits without tools, just sink a nut in the board that keeps the bolt fastened to it at all times - so then it just needs to go through the stand hole and a final winged nut you can put by hand.
The pdf on your website does not have any information… it only shows info for the 4 x wood lengths.. no info about materials or quantity or materials.. thanks for video tho
I just seen the Athletic greens you promoted.... made in Aotearoa (New Zealand) awesome product not just because it's made here, but I've heard alot of good things from my son.
Oh my goodness, you are amazeballs!!!! I love it. Have you ever done a rowing machine? Now that would be kool. Loving your vidz keep up your awesome work.
Dude you say you're not a gym bro, but you benched and squatted 60+ kg repetitively. Respect. You should have great results in half a year of training with 2 rest days in between each workout.
Nice job. Very cool and unique design there. Can't wait to see more videos. Hopefully you get great use out of it Mike. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Get/make molds like the ones from caveman weights or Stix & stone. Get a set with 45, 25, & the 10/5. I made mine with rebar & wire inside but I don't think it's necessary.
Mike you have a few Ney sayers . I am a personal trainer as well as a maker and have been training for 40 years your from on squatting is fine the weight is a little to heavy for you that's what is throwing you forward until you get stronger don't don't go as deep in the squat you will still get a good pump in the legs. The rack is made very strong and will last a long time , where I started my training we had a wooden squat rack and we had 700lbs on it and it was fine good job my man
Great build. You might consider a 2x4 in the front part of the legs to prevent the rack from splaying apart. Yes it is a pain the to move the bench but safer. All The Best.
Would it be an idea to cut the concrete into slices to allow for adjustable amounts of weight? This might require a bit of wire mesh throughout but it could help to have those concrete weights cut in half or thirds to allow them to be used for more exercises. What do you think?
I like the overall design. Only thing I would do differently is to add a diagonal brace (corner to corner) on each of the three sides. Don't want any racking when the weights get heavy.
I was wondering about DIY squat racks and found your video. My wife loves working with machines, and she wants to build this rack for me. As cheap as it might be compared to an already made one made with metal, we don't have the tools, so it will be pretty expensive regardless 😂
I'm counting very roughly 20 2X4, 24 Bolts and nuts+washer, half a sheet of plywood, insignificant amount of wood glue (should be substituted for some PL Premium 8x polyurethane adhesive since it's rated for structural applications with impact/live load and creep resistance), and some miscellaneous other things, so basically around 270$, and that's july 2022 Canadian dollars. Look online to find a cheap squat rack with bench safety accessories to compare. I find prices below 200$, but I'd rather trust laminated 2x4 for strength, rather than thin gauge steel tubes.
Try not hitching your squats. One smooth motion, knees staying in plane with your feet, breath and brace your core to stay more Upright. On the bench, elbows closer to the body, feet near the base of the bench. Nice builds though!
@@Lambo_567 i actually built this myself and im a 170 lbs man and lemme tell u this held me no problem at all (was doing pullups and jumping on it to make sure it's safe) I also am using chains to attach this rack to my house foundation so it doesn't move. It's pretty much a foundation for a house but smaller
@@bigcheese5057 but can u test it with a bar with weights on it? Let say somebodu doing squats with 140kg and fails. Will that thing hold the bar? Can u test it
@@Lambo_567 I'm actually getting my weights later on this week or early next week. The guards for sure would hold because it held me literally jumping on it. Also my dad said it can easily hold well over 600 pounds, but yea when o get my weights I'll let you know how it does
In the bench video he used a Hart drill. In this video he used a couple Craftsman drills. He painted them to make it harder to tell what they are because they aren't paying him anymore, or his new sponsors don't want him showing competitors' brands. It's kinda like on television shows when you see stickers/tape strategically placed over brand logos.
Nicely done Mike! that set up is much better than many of the gym equipment that I have seen. Just be careful doing those deep knee bends with that much weight as it's terrible on you knee joints and your lower back. Be well & stay safe! Happy Holidays to you & your family! 👍👍🎄🎄👍👍

Can you make a pull up bar on the back of this?
Pull up bar for sure
Maybe try making weights out of recycled aluminum cans melted and molded?
Dumbbells, a foldable bench for incline/decline, and rack to store the weight plates and dumbbells!
Pull up bar and a dip station.
Looks good! One quick suggestion. All a little lip to the end of the catch bars so that the weights can’t roll off. You really don’t want them falling.

No need to cut any concrete. Just use less concrete for additional weights.
Agree about the stops.
Agreed on the stops!
I have a question, if I can fit a parallel bar into one of these wooden columns, would it be safe to do the dips exercise?
a quick tip...use epoxy mix..dive dumbells in it...let extra epoxy spill down...after it dries, it kinda wrap around the concrete and do a protective layer . if u do this 2-3 times better .)
you can add a holes at the top of the legs and with that holes you can use barbell for chin ups! Nice build!

Amazing build. And ideal weights too for the average person, not too heavy not too light 👌
Super Project . . . I would love to try building it since I do love home workouts too . . . . Thanks so much Mike, you are awesome!!! :)
Very creative. I'd like to see you do some dumbells and maybe add a pull up bar or outdoor bars to this setup! Thanks for the content
That would be really cool!! I've got more planned 🤙🏼
Dude you say you're not a gym bro, but you benched and squatted 60+ kg repetitively. Respect. You should have great results in half a year of training with 2 rest days in between each workout.
That was 80kg
hey mike, i love you and all, so please be careful with your squat form.
He's throwing them ass back for that extra gainz
He's fine. I assume you're talking about hinging? Hinging is fine, more of it with low bar, more of it when you have long femurs.
Wtf never mind, got to the end and watched him squat there too. dkwtf is going on.
Only be a problem once he starts hitting over 250, you can do good mornings with that kind of weight.
Thanks, I just built this, but added longer vertical fronts and a pull-up bar
Maybe get a copy of the HomeMadeModern Uyeda regime for your workouts. Btw, awesome build. 2x4s can do anything.
Hey Mike, would you consider adding a cable machine diy accessory to your system?
That could be cool.. not sure how to do it off the top of my head but it'd probably work!
@@ModernBuilds I’ve drawn a few up in sketch up, but haven’t pulled the trigger on building it yet

I did the same bro. I got the mold from stix and stone and make weight plates. I just sprinkle strengthening fibers from Amazon in not rebar
How incredible, the ease with which the structure is made, it is very gratifying to see this video. God keep blessing.

He does need to try to keep his neck in line with his spine by looking at the ground and not the sky though. Other than that he looks fine
nice project and with some more higth you could add a bar for traction
When doing longer than 4” screws it’s best to use normal 1/2” chuck drill it can burn up those clutches in the impact

how do you unrack safetly with a support beam in the front?
Yay top 12 and top 4 likes and comments. Love your channel. Happy holidays to all.

Is the shop big enough to accommodate it tho ?
Is it possible to store it out in the shed or something ? like epoxying it for weather protection ?

Love to see a boxing bag stand. Great video 👍
Awesome build, Mike!
Spray diesel on the forms before pouring concrete and it will be easier to remove
should extend the rack to be full height to be able to add pull up bar.
Mike’s out here getting swole! Let’s get it 👏🏽
I have a Rouge rack but this made me want to build my own.
After curing, your weights were really... NICE.
New meaning to the name Modern "Builds"...Mike is about to start getting jacked.

can u use 4x4 instead of glueing 2 2x4s
Yeah, you'll pay 50-60 more dollars though.
you could add rebar in the concrete to increase the weight considering iron weighs more ?
Are you going to post the plans for the bench and rack?
You made the Yabba Dabba Do It Yourself DIY SQUAT RACK / BENCH PRESS COMBO
7:33 best moment 🤣
But nice work done, looks great
great build!!!! you should build a musical instrument. like a drumset or guitar
Is this cheaper to build than just buying one? Wondering especially after the prices of lumber has significantly has gone up this past year.

Wow so cool. How much weight it can hold?
Why are your Craftsman Drills yellow? Is it because HD doesn’t sell them?
Good work!
Turned out pretty nice man
Good job 👍🏼
when you were ripping the 2x4's for the spotting system. YIKES. fine build tho
GREAT VIDEO!
this mans be squattin in jeans. born different! 😤
Can u make a foldable one please thank u 🙏
What was total cost?
Now make a pulling system :-)
Where are the plans? I have not found them on your website
Nice Fred Flintstone gym.
That's Awesome!!!! Thank you!!!! 👍😎
How much exactly is a 2x4 in cm? Doing this from brazil 🇧🇷
could have made the spotting bar a little declined towards the rack to avoid the barbell from rolling outside
roughly how much did this cost to build?
Nice idea
Glue can be omitted
can you build a leg press machine ?
Yes Mike we need that leg press video.
How did you get the weights both 69lb? Same amount of water?
There's vids out there on DIY upper/lower pulley systems.
better to make multiple concrete plates for adjustable weights
What about the bench? Is that a diy build too?

Did you paint your drill😂
In todays episode of videos i have no plans of doing but enjoy watching
