Reductive animation of phenylacetone and methylamine. Phenylacetone is a list 1 chemical now but you can produce it via dehydrocarboxylation of phenylacetic acid and acetic acid. Chances are it won't be blue, but it's the method used in Breaking Bad. Can't really go into detail, but there's loads of research online
Dad is a thug. Stihl Chainsaw, Skil Mag 77 circular saw, DeWalt drill, has all of the right Drywall gear. This man has done a lot of real work in his life. Respect.
Gee MX I just got done buying everything about 15 minutes ago including the pull-up bar and it’s $340.16 (and I got the 3/4” black pipe) here in Florida way over the estimated $200 -250 and this is without the paint or stencils
Your dad knows exactly what he's doing. Many props! For anyone else looking at building a power rack out of wood, if you want to paint it, one extra step you can take is to paint each piece of wood before assembling with fasteners. Cut, pre-drill, paint, then screw everything together. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this!
built this powerrack 4 years ago for then 12 and 13 year old boys. has held up amazingly well and has held 400 + lbs. Most people cant believe it is made out of wood when they see it. I just tell em "Duke is a wizzard". Peace.
Didn't see it mentioned in the video (may be in the description ... hint hint ... add it if not), but use Kiln Dried Wood, NOT Pressure Treated. PT wood is highly saturated and has a huge shrinkage rate compared to KD wood. Keep up the great work dudes!
Wow this is such an elaborate tutorial, great work Dudes. Really like that you show every step of the process, give all the measurements and have a shopping list in the description. These videos are fun too watch, have perfect clear explanations and get me excited to start building my own home gym. Keep it going Buff Dad! Edit: Also have a suggestion on something I think would be cool to see build, a preacher bench. Currently do those with a normal bench on incline, however it's not wide enough to have both arms leaning on it at once.
I am building one of these right now and thought some of you might like this tip. In the holes that you put your "clips" or safety bars, drill the holes a bit larger and find some steel bushings that will still allow your clips or bars to slide through and pound them in there for some added durability. Also, if you are going to use anything over 300 lbs on it I would reccomend finding some solid steel bars for the safety bars instead of that black gas pipe. Also, consider bolting it to the ground or studs in the wall because while it is plenty strong it is also really lightweight and tends to rock when you put a heavy squat load back into the clips. Works pretty well though honestly. Not as "cool" as a sweet rouge rack but functional and cheap
Best design on the internet. Built in 2000 & still perfect. Can't thank you guys enough :) You can put wood (or metal bar) across the top to suspend a punching bag also! (suspend out in front)
Not yet. I'm moving into a new place and also because I'm a carpenter there is always something in the shop that has to get done first. But it's on my list of things to build this winter.
In place of the 4x4 corner supports, consider using 3/4" plywood triangular braces w. 12"-16" leg lengths placed on the outside of the frame members for improved rigidity. Also, 1" steel tubing will have considerably greater radial strength than the 3/4" pipe (same O.D.). Good job guys.
Thanks you guys so much. Needed some racking pins and your tip did the trick. I'm wrapped the area with electric tape to help protect the bar. The metal on metal scratched up the coating on my bar.
Recently built this power rack due to the unfortunate circumstances... the rack is great and I highly recommend building it. Although it may cost closer to $300 depending on where you live and the prices of your Lowe’s/Home Depot.
I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B
Awesome video BuffDudes! For everyone wondering if wood is strong enough the answer is yes. I use 4x4 to help jack up my vehicles so it can hold a couple hundred pounds all day long.
I remember watching this when it was first posted but I only owned a drill and a screw driver. Over time I amassed more tools and then COVID finally convinced me to just make this rack. I've now made two with slight mods. Thanks Duke and Buff Dudes!
Building this now, first observation: Drilling those holes sucks pretty big sausage, even with a corded drill. Should finish up in the morning. Thanks Buff Dudes.
algreen Turned out... OK. Some holes were a bit crooked, so the bars aren't as easy to get through. Wish I had a drill press. Still worth the time putting together, cause I can get buff now.
I'll watch that when I build mine. Wouldn't making the holes a little wider or trying to fix the angle a bit at the bottom help the crookedness? Just a thought. I don't have the space to build one atm but as soon as I do, probably when I move, i'm making one :D
+Clay Stephens Me and my dad made this the other weekend and he forgot his drill so we were using my very old and kind of under powered one. It sucked and eventually the drill caught fire hahahah
Yes they do. both of my drills are dog tired...It took me a couple of hours alone to drill the holes (don't have a powerful enough drill). Only did a total of 4 holes per upright for right now.
+Trills Ali It scared us the first time we saw the show. We questioned if our dad had a shady past he had neglected to tell us about. It didn't help this kid named Jessie kept coming around our place. ;-)
This was a huge game changer for my workouts. My workouts increased and I'm stronger than ever. If there's a snowstorm? I have a workout with hot chocolate. Gyms closed at night? No problem. Tormado? Go to the basement. Basement ceiling was too low for any power rack outside so I built it to perfectly fit. Safety pins are life savers. This workout tool is legit the best piece of equipment I own. Thanks Buff dudes and Buff dad.
I have had to shorten the dimensions as my York in door bench bar is only 90cm from weight to weight. So I have done the 4x4 either side with a 700mm gap. I am also using smaller corner supports (thinner). My joinery mate says it will be fine and secure. Currently drilled two posts. The Front I will also have a chin up/muscle up bar going accross and the 700mm 4x4 set alittle back maybe 1/3. I could also use this as the pulley system but not that far ahead yet. Just looking forward to benching and squats. Currently squating off my 140litre wheelie bins. So far so good. Considering this is my 2nd project, my first was the bench which I nailed, just need to purchase foam and vinyl to finish and give it the BUFF dude seal of approval. Michael, from Jersey.C.I. Thanks Buff Dudes, great work. DIY DUKE!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved this video! Absolutely superb.. Most people could buy a power rack but the pride of building your own will always win! But I thought buff dude dad ... Could you extend the power rack to add another cable to do cable cross pullovers with monkey bars then at the opposite end attach at leg press??? I think you have the skills to make it happen & il just thinking it may give way to more ideas! Again great video ... Cannot wait to try a build!
Know this is 2021 but wanted to say Buff dad you are not only cool but a amazing instructor keeping things simple and understandable for people. The safety first and be aware of dangers of tools being used has saved many from harm great job. I built my first cage in 1974 just like this one 4x4x8. Built second one with 2 inch metal tubing in 1978 sold them both, one to fire department guys and one to a gym. I love making things in weightlifting equipment area. Now guys we need a Buff dude wood safety bench press machine (for no spotter benchers)
I’m going to build this power rack this weekend with the pull-up bar and pulley system. Amazon is selling really poorly made power racks and I want the diy project. I’ll update with the Oct 2022 pricing. I also have made all my weights out of concrete using caveman molds.
In California mine came out to about 270 only difference is I am using pressure treated wood. A difference of about 1.50 so about 12 dollars more than non pressure treated. Curious where you are.
i rarely leave comments but this time I will because that was a really cool video. I had no intention of building a rack but still felt compelled to watch the whole video. Buff dad is a great presenter. will be watching more
just finished this! Thanks for great video. Couple notes: Materials are about $300. I built to 8ft tall, so needed 9 4x4s. I did 3x5 plates on outside edge at all joints... helped stability alot. If you add the extra braces at end of video they are not in the materials list. I'm worried about 3/4 black pipe safties... gonna fill them with rebar and concrete.
just built one with my son, thanks so much for posting it. when hand drilling the holes, it might be better to mark both sides and drill from both sides, the drill wonders and exits crooked. who knew this would come in handy during COVID times, thanks again
Such a good point Michael. I've just built it with my dad and that the exact same advice he gave to me. We marked both sides and drilled to the middle. All perfectly straight :) - just uploaded the video if you fancy another version. How did you rack come out?
Hey Buff Dudes, as soon as I saw the Squat Rack in your " How to Build a HOME GYM" video last week I decided I had to do it. I spent all weekend on it and it came out great! One thing though that I did that I would recommend you guys also do is, I put a pull up bar on the front AND on the back, what I did then was take two pieces of pipe about 4 inches long that are slightly thicker than the pull up bars, then welded a steel pulley on each of the 4 inch pipes and slid them over my pull up bars. I then just threaded a steel cable through both pulleys, made a simple bar on the one end and a pipe on the other end to add weights. Works great for any cable exercise and the pulleys can just slide off when you want to do pull ups! Keep up the great work! Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa!
Ryan Wells Likewise, my 30 y/o Sear Craftsman drill gave up the ghost drilling the holes. Bought a Dewalt replacement, I could not believe how much more torque the Dwalt had. Drilled the big holes like the wood was butter!

I'm surprised i didn't see this video earlier! I'm gonna make sure to share it with a few friends! and your dad is really cool man!
me and my mates used to use 2 power bars rested on the safety bars set at around nipple height and do dips in between them, if you get what i mean. its a good way to do dips without a dip station.
You could easily make a dip station with some lengths of black pipe and some elbows and T's . Just gotta find the right length. I thought about doing that myself , Just look at some pictures of dip stations for a reference !
Pullo thanks man! but isn't the rolling/moving bars dangerous? should figure out a way to lock them. may be a sort of "adapter" on the safety bar. or the safety bar could have two " U shaped curves" to fit the bar. i tried to show the safety bars below :p ''''U''''''''''U'''' ''''U''''''''''U''''

Dear anyone who has built this: How has it held up? Anything you would do differently if you built again? Any advice to make it better or easier to build? Thank you in advance
I'm building one now. One major mistake: could not find Douglas Fir in stock in my area and bought pine (supposedly "dried" pine). I thought I selected the best posts but did not see that they had a twist in them and while sitting in my basement, probably twisted a lot more, especially after I drilled all those holes for the safety bars. All my holes were lined up, but after I patched up all the dents and cracks in the wood and sanded everything down and finally went to assemble it, I discovered that the 4x4 were so twisted that there was no way for me to make an even structure. I assume this is due to pine being much softer than Douglas Fir. At this point, I put the project on hold and will be looking for Douglas Fir 4x4s and try again.
Moving out of my barracks into a mates house in a couple months and was planning on making something like this. Already had the basic design in my head but this was a huge help guys, cheers.
Any concerns about the 4x4's twisting? I have read about that happening to other people that used them. My guess is they maybe used treated wood. Either way, do you have any concerns about that?
I know this is old but I think it's just standard construction grade lumber. I think if they are braced right it should be good up to about 4-500 lbs. Building one now so we shall see...

Respect.
Who’s actually building a gym in the garage right now? 🙋🏽♂️
🙋♂️🙋♂️since everyone on offer up are price gauging on every used equipment at a ridiculous price.
But I usee galvanized unistrut tubing with bolts
I believe it means before
Me!!!
Hail the OG Buff Dudes!
You guys make working out extremely easy to understand!
What a great vid. I'm a professional carpenter and I didn't think to do this. AWSOME!!
Can't wait to build one of these!
Did you do it?
Not yet. I'm moving into a new place and also because I'm a carpenter there is always something in the shop that has to get done first. But it's on my list of things to build this winter.
Building mine over the next few days. Have all the cuts done, pretty excited. Following your exact specs. I'll post pics.
where are the pics, jon? Lies!!
I love that you are still updating the video's details with the half rack video years later! Legit.
Buying the materials now. A lot closer to $300.
Chris Harlin depends on where you live, where I’m from it’s like 230
Yes. Just bought most of the material from Lowes and HD...well over $300 same stuff they listed 😩
Glenn B
I feel like this is getting a lot more traffic now
Quarantine
+Clay Stephens Good job. How did it turn out?:)
algreen Turned out...
If the zombie apocalypse ever happens I wanna be with you family lol
Ha! Alex Levine that's what we're preparing for!
Buff Dudes Don't do leg day on a zombie apocalypse... unless you're a buff dead
buff dad looks like walter white from breaking bad ... and also he speaks like him lol
+Trills Ali It scared us the first time we saw the show. We questioned if our dad had a shady past he had neglected to tell us about. It didn't help this kid named Jessie kept coming around our place. ;-)
+Buff Dudes lol
He also looks like one of the dudes from Mythbusters when he wears his hat in other videos
Just need a tweaker to be Jessie
I AM THE ONE WHO LIFT!!!
Great to hear that is! I built mine but didn't have a permanent space for it so it lives at my parents now. Glad you've got some good use out of yours
4 at 43" and *3 at 41"
I'm also going to add a dip extension.
What's the dip design look like?
For dips I´m thinking just to hang my rings from pull-up bar, since I already have them.
Can I paint it purple so I feel like I'm at Planet Fitness?
Zalapski Puppa then you can kick yourself out of your own gym for being loud😂😂😂
Planet Fitless has squat racks?
MAGA MAN, No.
I'm waiting for the 'DIY - Lunk Alarm' video!
Please get the fuck out of here lol
I also have made all my weights out of concrete using caveman molds.
holy jesus for so long seeing that I thought it was metal...
right?? Looks like they bought it!
Omfg same lmao
hell yeah i also thought the same
Hahahaha! Yup, me too.
i know that's why i wasnt clicking the vid... Cuz i didn't think I could build a metal power rack Lol
When your 6 mins into the video and you realize this was posted in 2014, not in response to the quarantine and mass amount of gyms that are closed.
They look the exact same as 2014
I didn't realise either. Just posted my build on my channel - pandemic forced me into it. Gyms only just opened again here in the uk!
Thats awesome, i just priced everything out at my local home depot and it came out to $173.12 that's nothing for a power rack!
Yep $194 but sadly I'm up for another drill now rip old girl😪
Including tools?
In California mine came out to about 270 only difference is I am using pressure treated wood. A difference of about 1.50 so about 12 dollars more than non pressure treated. Curious where you are.
@@trinidadarceo4221 really shouldnt use pressure treated lumber indoors.
@@timc7798 thank you. It's outside.
i rarely leave comments but this time I will because that was a really cool video.
I just built one. Only difference was I took a router to the edges of the 4x4s just to round them a little. Thanks for the great walk-through!!
400-500 pounds. More than most will ever need. Great project.
He's understating it quite a bit, they tested his half rack design at over 1000 lbs and this is stronger than that.
Buffdad is so god damn cool
just built one with my son, thanks so much for posting it. when hand drilling the holes, it might be better to mark both sides and drill from both sides, the drill wonders and exits crooked. who knew this would come in handy during COVID times,
thanks again
Such a good point Michael. I've just built it with my dad and that the exact same advice he gave to me. We marked both sides and drilled to the middle. All perfectly straight :) - just uploaded the video if you fancy another version. How did you rack come out?
@@JoshMcCallion awesome, i'm glad these youtubers post things like this
@@michaelgagnon8139 So am I. Its such a well put together email!
I've been a fan of these guys for over a year now. Why am I just now finding these videos!!! I'm about to have a whole gym of buff dudes stuff!
Anton Swanepoel sounds great. got pics?
Buff Dad looks young and cool. And Brandon is like his clone.
DIY Cloning Station vid coming up next!
Buff Dudes LOL working on that as we speak already have two Samsons.
DIY Duke cool!!
99 wood turning
Apparently my drill isn't buff, it went up in flames after hole 11 of 56.
Ryan Wells lmao
Ryan Wells Likewise, my 30 y/o Sear Craftsman drill gave up the ghost drilling the holes. Bought a Dewalt replacement, I could not believe how much more torque the Dwalt had. Drilled the big holes like the wood was butter!
Lmao ...Should have made a video lol 😆😆😆
Lol I doubled u I got 22 holes in b4 she broke I started pre drilling it didn't force it's way in
My dads new Milwaukee took a shit...
There no Buff Dudes without a Buff Dad! You are the man and thanks for saving me about 7 bills during COVID !
I am finally ready to BUild mine!!!!
Well, I know what my next big home project is going to be. :)
Great video.Next time cooking blue meth with buff dad.
Shhh, let's keep that on the down low mmm6325 . We're keeping him safe in the basement until Saul can find a way to cover up that whole mess.
Buff Dudes s'all good'man
man im sic of hearing about breaking bad, every godamm analogy now a days is about that show, the show has been over for quite some time, and i was an avid fan of the show, but can we fucking stop with this shit already, i swear half of these comments are from loser meth heads themselves
Has anybody gotten Hyezmar's Woodworking Bible yet? I think he's still looking for readers before publishing it. At least that's what I saw in a site after googling him.
"hell, you can even curl in it......cause it's YOURS!" i lol'd
Just wanted to shout you guys out. Found your channel and it's awesome and I've built this power rack and it came out perfect. I was debating forking some money out for a metal one, but seeing this video totally changed my plans. The rack is EXCELLENT and does everything I need it to. Keep up the Buff Stuff
Saw this and got inspired. Built it yesterday in my basement. Works awesome!

"You can even curl in this Squat Rack" LMAO!!! I love these guys
For those going for the hand saw method. It took me about 4h to cut 21 45° pieces. I wasnt satisfied with some
Yeah that was a lengthy part of the build for me as well. Tried to do it with the chop saw but the wood was too thick so had to hand saw it. Just uploaded a video on the build!
There are some cool miter tools on Amazon for easy perfect 45 degree cuts if you guys don’t have a saw. Just requires a little sweat and elbow grease
Thank you DIY Duke for giving me a cost effective rack to build. Your thorough explanations gave me the confidence to attempt and succeed at building an entire garage gym that looks amazing.
My father told me he was clearing out the downstairs office and said I could make my own home gym, this is the perfect video I pretty much have all the tools you have all I need to do now if buy the wood and iron bars. thanks a bunch.
Is that you Heisenberg?

Thank you, Sir! That was driving me crazy. I was measuring and thinking that what he said didn’t line up. Back to work. 👍🏼
Scrolled for the comment
dips man!!!! can you do dips on this? or are the separations too wide? you can squat, bench, pull ups, overhead press in this power rack! just find a way to include dips, and in my honest opinion, this can be a complete home gym!! i really wanna build it, though I haven't worked with woods before! I've been watching your videos for a long time now, and i believe that is one of the best videos on the web, for someone who is interested in bodybuilding, strength training...
Pullo so simple - nice.
You could easily make a dip station with some lengths of black pipe and some elbows and T's . Just gotta find the right length. I thought about doing that myself , Just look at some pictures of dip stations for a reference !
Pullo thanks man! but isn't the rolling/moving bars dangerous? should figure out a way to lock them. may be a sort of "adapter" on the safety bar. or the safety bar could have two " U shaped curves" to fit the bar. i tried to show the safety bars below :p

buff dude dad is the man! and hes fucking strong and jacked too! good ass gene, viking descendant, looking ass dudes!!! its awesome keep the videos coming man!
Definitely a talented family
Yeah man!
Hey dudes, how about a DIY episode on a dip station or an attachment dip station for the power rack?
Use two bars and boom dip station
Moving out of my barracks into a mates house in a couple months and was planning on making something like this. Already had the basic design in my head but this was a huge help guys, cheers.
Really outstanding. I bought the supplies yesterday. I'm on my way to the basement to build this thing. Thanks for the idea and the motivation!
Since I'm the only one who's going to be using this.....I'm not drilling all those holes. haha
What's the purpose of all the other holes?
@@naulyd so you can adjust the rack and safety bar for people of different heights.

@@alfonsodavilatorres4061 you are stuck with the kindergarten playground
Any concerns about the 4x4's twisting? I have read about that happening to other people that used them. My guess is they maybe used treated wood. Either way, do you have any concerns about that?
I know this is old but I think it's just standard construction grade lumber. I think if they are braced right it should be good up to about 4-500 lbs. Building one now so we shall see...

Hey Buff Dudes! Just sending a Big Thank You your way for your detailed video. Since Covid hit my wife and I have been slowly purchasing exercise gear when it was available. Guided by your videos we built the bench and the power rack and are very happy with both. Stay safe and enjoy your Christmas.
