Does the Buff Dudes Power Rack work? 6 years later, we find out! LINK TO ORIGINAL DIY POWER RACK VIDEO: • How to Build a HOME PO... #buffdudes #diy #homegym
I'm thinking about building one as well but I will be moving next year. Do you think it could be disassembled and moved or should I wait until I can place it permanently?
I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B
I'm constantly amazed at how intelligent, open-minded and young Duke sounds. He literally seems a buddy, not a father, but you could bet he did a heck of a fine job with Brandon and Hudson. Kudos!
Agreed when I have children especially sons. I was going to teach him. what I wanted to learn when I was young to a teen and an adult. Bless my pops though! a good hard work ethics humble killing fields Khmer Rouge genocide survivor. But unfortunately he’s sort of a handy man hes mainly a gardener lol.
5:15 I'd think the dudes are not giving the rack enough credit there - 3 - 4 hunndo lbs? That's gotta be a gross underestimation. The 4 x 4's can handle a lot of load - probably easily over 1000 pounds even if you consider all the drilled holes and such. Perhaps the weakest link might be at the J-cups? Anyways, good to see it stand the test of times. When I buy my own house, I'll definitely look into building a rack of my own. Big ups!
I'm a building engineer and I find it really funny when people say "a wooden power rack will never hold up" and I ask them what their house is made out of and how long it has held up. Usually, they feel dumb. We build houses out of wood. Our roofs are held up by wood and not magic. That power rack is so overbuilt you could park a bus on it and it would hold. If anyone wants a good (overbuilt) power rack, this is the one to build!
@eric williams It scares you because you're not using logic. You are using feelings. No one cares about feelings because they don't determine if something is going to hold. Logic and science does. That fact that you say "no bodys slamming weight against your house 100 times a day. And houses take maintenance" shows that you don't have a basic understanding of what you are talking about. A house is constantly under stress, For example in areas where it snows you can have several extra tonnes of stress coming and going throughout several months and we haven't even started talking about what wind and temperature changes do. The small areas between the holes may "scare" you because you lack the understanding of how a structure works.
@eric williams What have I built today? A tunnel under a city. Can you do that? Didn't think so. You don't know what you are talking about. Wood rotting. Ever heard of treated timber? You're talking about 6x time strength this 5x strength that. This material that material. It doesn't matter. What matters is the geometry. And yes, I can weld, I can run a mill, I can run a CNC that's basic stuff. Doesn't impress anyone.
@Rude One Steel isn't necessarily better than wood. In a burning house, what is better? Wood or steel? You would say steel and you'd be wrong. But that's not the point. I honestly don't know what you are talking about because I never said wood was better than steel when it comes to a power rack. I simply said that the rack they built is overbuilt and will hold up no matter what you throw at it. So the point you are making is... Pointless.
They're probably comparing themselves with powerlifters. There are people that squat like 700lbs. The Buff Dudes are really strong but they're always more focused on the bodybuilding side of strenght training ;)
I don’t see what you’re confused about, between squats, box squat, rack pull or any other rack exercises, a max weight of 405 isn’t heavy at all. As they said they put more reps in.
What’s funny is that I’ve been looking up different power rack designs and this one is still one of the best out there. And now only to find that this still stands after years of use is all the more reason to finally build this one. Thanks for the video. I’ve been on the fence for a while for what to do.
Just wanted to say thanks for the years of gains! I built my rack in 2015 based on the Buff Dudes design. I had to retire the rack in 2019 after I moved, but it was still solid and was the cornerstone of my lifting journey💪
It's really nice to see a good, kind dad. My dad wasn't a good father and I was treated awfully so seeing Mr Duke really is inspiring. Keep spreading that positive energy good sir.
Hey buff dudes great video found your old ones that lead me to this. One request could you do a home desk attachment 😄 many of us are working from home during the lockdowns so might be nice to do some lat pulldowns during screen time break thanks
Thank you guys for making the original video it saved me so much money during the qurantine i was thinking of buying a metal one but they are so expensive rn but i saw thsi vid in my recommendation and it saved me so much money
$170 for 6 years is still cheaper than any gym membership. Something to ponder is the rack is made out of pressure treated lumber and should be good for at least another 5-10. We've got houses that are standing for 75+ years that have regular lumber in them.
I really like the idea of a follow-up video as you wonder if some of these diy project builders have regrets or things they would have done differently. I also liked that test you did of your stand alone squat stands. It gives one more confidence in the builds as does how many others have built your designs, especially this rack. I really enjoy the diy stuff.
I'm just waiting on a few things to be delivered for one of these. I'm building it from pressure treated lumber and will put it outside under an awning to keep the worst of the rain off it. Great idea, and it's going to be a great addition to my outdoor gym.
I built my entire gym out of wood, inspired by these guys. Check out "the craziest gym ever" on my channel. The crazy thing is I lived only a couple miles away from them and didn't even know it. If you buff dudes are ever looking for new video ideas, I'd love to do a collab with you about armwrestling or home gym equipment...A build off would be epic.
Great video as usual guys!! I love how you guys promote the DIY homegym world!! :D I made a cable pulley machine out of wood and it is holding up awesome. Thanks for the inspiration!
I remember 6 years ago when I found your tutorial to build it...it was very inspirational for me ! this is still the best tutorial available on internet to build yourself a cheap and buff rack ! Thank you
I built mine almost 5 years ago. My wife uses it too. That's around $1500 in gym fees at somewhere cheap. Thanks DIY Duke for helping us get buff, and save money!
You guys are awesome. I built my power rack and bench about 2 months ago. Love it. I also just finished my idea of a cable attachment for it. Thanks for all the videos. I just got my 12 week plan. Excited to start working out.
The bench I made from your video has been holding up great! I use it almost every day, and i would have made this too but I already welded my own adjustable barbell rack stands.
I remember that video. Can't believe its been six years. It's still looks amazing even though yous all have punished those reincarnated criminal muscles. Even that Spanish guy that live in Hudson's tricep. Stay safe.
My own little cable machine hack is to get some resistance band sets and wrap them around various parts of my power rack. Using the pegs or safety rods to help set the height for whatever I need. Have been able to rig it up for pull downs, fly’s, and several other exercises.
We made one about 3 years ago, using it at least a few times a week, and it's holding up great! Even in the garage where it's exposed to temp and humidity fluctuations
I built a diy rack a few years ago but it was really finicky and didn’t feel too safe. Yesterday I tore it apart and tidied it up with a miter saw, building it back up with your technique. Looks great. Thanks !
Thank you for the update and for the project! Due to Covid19 I cant go to the gym anymore, so I'm finishing my power rack this week and looking forward to start working out at home. Thank you again guys!
The best piece of equipment I built was the BUFF dudes bench. Everyone is hiking up the prices since gyms closed on benches from $200 and up. I made mine for 40.00 from the HD "damaged or returns" bin and used an old mat for a cushion. I got a faux leather sheet from an upholstery that they didn't want anymore for free. Thanks a bunch Duke!
This rack is quite wonderful. I only have one problem with this rack: the racking parts are hard metal and metal against metal is gonna damage the bar. However, wrapping them in some kind of hard plastic would be a very good solution, I think. Same for the safety pins. I wonder if a piece of lumber or other could be drilled to put fully around the metal tube, so it doesn't damage the bar. I have expensive bars so I might care more. Anyway, fantastic stuff.
I ve build chest bench , leg press machine ,pull up bars and lat pull .... I need something rewarding out of all n that's gonna be this for sure.. Thanks for the update.. stay healthy sir👍😎🔥
I love this thing guys....sadly i had to make a total different one as my space was even more limited. My half rack is made from 10cm x 10cm beams vey sturdy but i am trying to create add ons like a leg extension, curl, press, viking press, belt squat. Belt squat i got figured out now got some idea for a leg press and extension but i need to make combo eqiupment to make it all work out. Maybe you guys have some ideas Love to hear them
I built one three years ago. I love mine. My only complaint was mine is slightly bending in which makes removing the adjustable bar a bit difficult. Totally my choice of timber which was probably too soft. Not enough to affect anything structure wise. If I rebuilt it today I'd just add more of the support sections you put on the vertical pieces on the insides to make things stay more square. Great piece of equipment and essential to any home gym I will have from here on out.
I'm around 80% done...honestly I dont have the proper power tools for angle sawing, so gonna looke like me...amorph at best:D will see if it holds up (or whether i'll be able to use it)..
Just a thought... you guys should try and design and build a 'foldable' rack of some sort. for those of us that don't have as much room, or want more flexibility in the space. I'd love to see Buff Dad design something like that! cheers.
In one year of light use, one of the front 4x4s has some massive cracking. Not deep, but huge cracks on the front side along the holes, minor cracking in the bracing. Not sure how or what caused this, maybe the screws were too tight, the pilot holes were not deep enough, etc. I also did some research to see this is common behavior with pressure treated 4x4. Is there some kind of filler I could use, or would you suggest to replace the cracked posts? One is quite cracked but not deep, while the other is mildly cracked, also not deep. Both are the front posts. I made my pullups bar by boring a hole through the top two side posts instead of the front two as you did, im not sure if this has something to do with it. Please help me out. Thanks.
Would it be simple enough to make a taller version? I don't know much about building things but it seems like you'd only need to use taller vertical beams? I plan on building this someday, but if I can I would set it up with a higher ceiling, and wouldn't mind a taller one.
Quick question: is it compatible with commercially produced safety bars, jhooks, and and various other attachments because the holes are a standard size? In other words, could you just make the holes the same size as that of a titan rack, and then add their attachments if you wanted?
I have a powerrack outside in the garden so I can workout and get a tan too. Powerrack , a barbell and some weights is all you need to train. Also you can use the powerrack to do bodyweight exercises if you add some parallel dipbars on it. Use it for pull ups, dips, triceps extensions etc
It's an awesome build but with the price of materials these days I'm not sure the value is there. You can get a pretty nice rack for under $500 these days and you'd be hard pressed to build this for less.
Very cool. Only thing is that pull up bar doesn't actually work very well. You really want to be able to get your chin up over the bar so that you can get your elbows as far behind you as you can to get a proper contraction from the back muscles. Certainly better than nothing and a sweet DIY though.
Out of curiosity, do you ever fear that the wood will bend or wear down over time? Especially in places of frequent contact, like when you rack your weight on a certain hole... does the hole ever get wider?
I'm a little late to the party now but I just finished one of these myself, but one thing I wondered is if you have had any substantial weight come down on those saftey bars? I checked comments on the original build video and one thing that came up was that those saftey bars might not be enough if you went down with a big squat or something.
DIY duke is such a legend. Without him there would be no buff dudes.

June 2022 this all cost $230 (not counting the bench). I'd still say just buy a bench if you want inclines.
Mine has held up for 3 years and has been a BLESSING in quarantine
😀
Quick question: is it compatible with commercially produced safety bars, jhooks, and and various other attachments because the holes are a standard size? In other words, could you just make the holes the same size as that of a titan rack, and then add their attachments if you wanted?
I have a powerrack outside in the garden so I can workout and get a tan too. Powerrack , a barbell and some weights is all you need to train. Also you can use the powerrack to do bodyweight exercises if you add some parallel dipbars on it. Use it for pull ups, dips, triceps extensions etc

Dear Almighty DIY Duke, please come up with some lever arms for the squat rack!!!
Bro idec these dudes and not sure if anyone’s familiar with them but Rom GD are the nicest when it comes to making these diy things💪🏽💪🏽
I'm a little late to the party now but I just finished one of these myself, but one thing I wondered is if you have had any substantial weight come down on those saftey bars? I checked comments on the original build video and one thing that came up was that those saftey bars might not be enough if you went down with a big squat or something.
I was sold on the "Man" bun! Nothing speaks in such a masculine way as a "Man" bun does! Vomiting...
