    It's amazing how much T can effect your emotional state. It took me several months after my dose got changed at my one year, to realize that was the reason why I was struggling to keep my emotions in check. My now ex noticed all my emotional changes and eventually couldn't handle it. It unfortunately wasn't until after her and my break up that my doctor told me to just play with my dose a tad until I was feeling right again.

    Such a helpful video!! Thank you. I just went to the endocrine specialist today and I have my first testosterone injection in hand (available). Tomorrow I'm going to get my baseline hormone/cholesterol/etc levels and then I'm going to make sure that I observe the changes closely when I do start injecting T. I appreciate you taking the time to talk about your perils and pitfalls so that the rest of us transpeeps can learn from them. Keep doing what you're doing, Dade. Love from California. -Mo

    I really appreciated this video. Thank you 🙏 the algorithm put this here so I clicked it and found so much valuable information that I seriously needed. I’m on my third week on T and I wasn’t checked for my pre T levels of hormone so now I’m going to be getting all this situated, also thank you for the timeline and your thoughts on brands and reactions. All extremely useful information. I’m completely grateful to you🙏👍👌

    Hey Dade!
    I have to say, I get so excited when I see that you've posted a new video. Although I'm not trans, I do identify as lesbian, and feel very androgynous in my gender identity. When you speak, there is a grounded, calmness around you that draws me in and makes me want to hear more. I have watched all of your videos. You are so blessed to have such a beautiful family! I grew up in Ashland OR, I wonder if you live close by? I saw a picture of my high school health teacher, Allison French, in one of your picture videos a while back.
    I really love what you are doing for the trans community. It is so important to have accurate knowledge when making such a monumental transition within your body, and you are really helping to get that knowledge out there. Thank you!

    We are all learning together, us and the doctors who work with us. Someday medical schools will provide meaningful training so that doctors can be informed about our medical needs, and they in turn will share their newfound knowledge with us. Until that day - we will keep learning from each other. Thanks for the info!

    Yep, I had to raise my dose after hystro too. My research had shown me that it's 25% that have to go up, 25% go down and the rest stay at the same level. Can't remember here I read that, though. I know it's a very prevalent myth in the FTM community that you get to take less T after hystro, so I'm glad you're bringing it up. Also, from what I've heard it can take months before you are stable after hystro, so this "having to go up"-thing might be temporary for some, permanent for others.

    This was INcredibly helpful!!! I had extremely low T pre-transition. My estrogen levels constantly fight my testosterone levels. Despite all the research I've done on hormones pre and post transitioning, it seems so encrypted. Much appreciation for sharing this knowledge.

    I don't have access to getting blood works done, so all I can do is pay attention to my body and how I feel. I also haven't had hysterectomy (yet - hope I'll be able to afford it in the future), so your info about that is very helpful.
    As for brand: Yes, I have the same experience as you have. It's actually helpful to hear about this from someone else because I wasn't sure what was going on, if it was all in my head; I can tell what I'm shooting is T, yet I don't feel it does what it's supposed to do (I bought a different brand the last time, but I'm most definitely returning to my usual brand.
    To sum up: I'm very sure you've touched on some aspects of being on T that will be helpful to a lot of people. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. * Thumbs up! *

    Agree, finding information is time consuming. Finding information on testosterone for a young teen child, HARD!
    Very useful information you have given me, and helpful. Information I will discuss/share with my child's endo (child not currently on T). We know his current base line, and he produce more testosterone then estrogen.

I had not been taking my T right bc of money problems and i wanted my T to last longer, but that was a REALLY bad idea!! I have to take my T like my doctor said. You're right about the brand name. The depo testosterone is best. Great video.

    As a health professional-in-training, I was taught that generics had no differences from brands. What you said is interesting....I'll bring this up with my instructors and see how they reply to that (and maybe change what they teach to future students). As always-thank you for sharing, Dade =)

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  10 лет назад

      That was also my understanding. And I believe that is accepted as truth. My doctor said from her experience in monitoring peoples various medication levels, that some medications that are supposed to be bio-identical are, in fact not. She said she noticed it most often with generic medications. She didn't tell me any of this until after I had (by chance) changed brands and told her I was having sudden changes.

      Thanks for the info. I have been on T (Watson) for nearly 3 yrs and am behind in some attributes. I have hypothyroidism and I do know that brands make a difference for that. The generic levothyroxin was not as good and it gave me more side effects. So I can see this also being true for T.

    This is something every ftm have to deal with, I cant tell how much I back everything you say here!!! Im so pissed off, could have saved myself 3 months of heavy depression post hysto, if I had checked my levels properly.I was superlow as well. Remember you told me, go check your levels, but I thought I could ride it off, that time would heal. You asking why no one talk about this. Its really a mystery! I guess theres so little knowledge out there, not even surgeon or my doc told me about this.

    This is great to know I’ve noticed a difference generics have made me feel different. I take it as a guy who’s on testosterone replacement therapy, it makes me feel good and I get great Danes at the gym. I’m on about 150 to 200 but sometimes 250 a week. Generally I stick around 150 a week. I’m definitely going to get the Depo does your insurance cover it? How much do you pay?

  • @tobyr3
    @tobyr3 10 лет назад +2

    I’m not sure if the T values you mentioned were for Total Testosterone, or for Bio-available Testosterone (also known as Free Testosterone [FT]). The VA lab results I get list the normal range for Total Testosterone as 250 - 1100 ng/dL. The normal range for FT is listed as 66 - 471 ng/dL. I realize that different labs list different ranges. Next time you should state the scientific units for the values shown on the test results.
    I looked up the composition of the Sandoz generic and the Pfizer brand of injectable testosterone cypionate. It appeared to me that they are identical in every way so other factors could have been involved.
    I hope your present dose produces good levels.

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  10 лет назад +1

      I did mention that I was speaking about free testosterone, rather then total testosterone. However, you are right, I forgot to mention the units. It is measured in ng/dl. Interestingly enough, the rage my doctor gave my is different then the one you cite. The two T's are supposedly identical - they would have to be. With that being said, my personally experience was that they did not perform the same. I hope this last dose change does it.

    • @dylanjamesfarnsworth2141
      @dylanjamesfarnsworth2141 10 лет назад

      Actually, when you're dealing with biologically active compounds you CAN get variable levels of activity - even if the two products are considered to have "identical" composition. This is due to the way our biochemistry evolved, to recognize only specific versions of molecules. I'll make a movie about it to explain further - and look into the process those companies utilize to synthesize their testosterone.

    Ahhh. . . see, I was just thinking that your ovaries do produce testosterone as well as estrogen, and that it would be plausible if your post hysto T levels dropped. Obviously, it depends on the person. Hormone levels are unique to the individual. Very informative video, Dade. You've given me a good bit to think about. . .

    This seems to line up with what my doctor told me. He is a trans man also and told me after being on T for a while the estrogen produced by your ovaries is basically irrelevant. He likened the estrogen to a mosquito and the T an elephant, and that a hysto would be more for cancer prevention and personal comfort. As always, enjoy your posts, thank you for sharing.

    I do think us who are transitioning private in Europe without proper followup by endocrinologist, and US, where all guys are transitioning private, its not a very healthy thing. We basically go through this just learning from experience. In that way, Europe has a better system for transition. Its such a complex diagnose, that ideally needs proper and professional follow up.

  • @AtNT26
    @AtNT26 10 лет назад

    Dade, thanks for sharing about this! I don't think it can be stressed enough how different each person is (as it pertains to the transition process) I've been on T for almost a year now and it has been a battle to get my E levels down, my T levels have been pretty consistent. It's interesting to hear the info about the hysto and how that affects T and E levels. I have been looking into getting a hysto to control my E levels. Tried E blockers a couple months ago and they didn't really work for me and I felt worse than I had before I started them.

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  10 лет назад

      That is so true. That is part of what makes it so hard. You never REALLY know what is going to happen. Estrogen blockers didn't do that much for me either.

    • @Johnson210000
      @Johnson210000 10 лет назад

      Do NOT use E blockers! They WILL cause bone loss. They are "black labeled" which means that they are only for fighting certain types of cancer.
      You require BOTH T and E for bone health. The E is actually the more important of the two.
      BTW, transwomen often use T blockers. They are also "black labeled" for use with certain types of cancer. The heart requires T. They can cause fatal heart attacks.

    I don't know if anyone said this already but sometimes if a cis-male bodybuilder takes some sort of testosterone to change his body some more, his body can't process it anymore and "makes" it into estrogen (so his T-levels actually go down and his E-levels go up) The body kind of levels it out itself in that case. So taking more T isn't always the solution to higher your T-levels

It's Testosterone cypionate in sesame oil. The bottle says 200mg, I have been on weekly shots. Syringe reads 1/2 a cc and that's my dose. Not sure if it's a generic brand in your opinion. I clearly am seeing changes but perhaps more changes would happen if I was taking a different dose? Using a different type of T? I am 3 years on T now. Any help would be great and thanks!

      ElectricDade Many doctors want to gradually increase the dose to make sure that none of the bad side effects occur. Many doctors believe that increasing the dosage at a rate similar to what a cis boy has is desirable.
      BTW, as long as the Free T levels are normal, you do NOT need to give your liver a break.

    Thanks for posting! I just recently discovered as well- that since Ive started "T"- Ive been on a generic form of Cypionate; not Sandoz, but Watson's Testosterone Cypionate. After hearing that youve noticed different changes with being on generic vs. brand name (Depo), I'm now wondering if the brand name would have a different effect on myself as well- as perhaps my delay in facial hair growth could be attributed to(among other internal factors) taking a generic version of "T"- but then again- my lack of facial hair w/being on "T" for 3 1/2 yrs now-could have nothing to do w that-& correlated with my genetics.Until now. I thought I was taking brand name(not that there is anything wrong w/generic) but maybe I would experience different physical changes w/ taking Depo-or maybe I wouldn't- but now Im interested in trying Depo. What was the price difference you ended up paying for w/getting Depo rather than Sandoz- & at what pharmacy(b/c obviously prices varies on what pharmacy you use too) Thanks Bud!

    It is so weird how things are different here. My endocrinologist said your level (that of a man)should be between 300 and 1200. In the beginning I was at 800. Now at 350 although I still take nebido 1000 mg every 12 weeks.Also, my gynae told me that when you had your ovaries removed(which is mandatory here if you want to change your name and sex on your ID)you go into menopause and get older quicker.Therefore T is important to maintain that process although according to him it doesn't 'replace' all of it. And I have noticed that process. So having check ups is indeed important.Cheers

      There are two types of testosterone that are measured. Free testosterone )bio-available), and Total testosterone. The range you are speaking of is Total testosterone. It is generally agreed that measuring free testosterone is a more accurate representation of a good level. The numbers I gave in my video were for free testosterone. You are right, though, a good range for a male total testosterone is 300-1200.

    • @Johnson210000
      @Johnson210000 10 лет назад

      The Free T is the hormone that produces most of the effects and, for most purposes, is the one to watch. Bioavailable T is a different hormone. Knowing the Total T level is helpful for diagnosing problems, but is not directly important.

      Johnson210000 I participated in a 2year project at the hospital University of Gent to determine what effect Nebido has on bones,musscle...They will compare that with the results of the same project done in Sweden. But I must say that they have never explained to me how T works. I mean, nothing of what you just explained to me.When I mentioned to them that my changes were going so slow compared to what I saw on youtube( And that maybe I needed a higher dose or another sort or T)they said it has nothing to do with the T itself but how receptive the individual is. I will bring it up next time I see him though :-)

    my friend/cousin wants to get it done. so my question is what are the steps exactly. do you really need therapy, and how much is everything. she doesn't know all the things to do but being female I can tell she isn't happy in her skin.

    • @jeletonman2696
      @jeletonman2696 8 лет назад

      If you're still questioning then the first step would be therapy however some places allow people to start testosterone without having seen a therapist if they are over 18- I'm pretty sure this is called informed consent. You can start by searching if that options available where you live. If they are going through therapy, it could take several months or no time at all to be given a letter saying that person is emotionally stable. When seeing an endocrinologist to start hormone therapy, they will ask for that letter if your cousin went through therapy. From there on all that needs to happen is the endocrinologist gives your cousin a prescription and they can start. Hope this helps!

    • @maira1195
      @maira1195 8 лет назад

      It does a little. I'll let her know. So does health insurance cover therapy? I want to give her all the info at once.

    • @jeletonman2696
      @jeletonman2696 8 лет назад

      That would depend on the gender therapist and what insurance they take, so your cousin may need to search around a little bit if they don't take her insurance. Personally, my insurance covered most of my therapy, so i didn't have to pay a whole lot. I would say most insurances cover the therapy though! Btw, it has to be a therapist that specializes in trans* people. She could try speaking to her actual doctor and see if they would recommend a therapist. Otherwise, just google some in your area. Good luck (:

    Hey, man, Sorry, I wanted to hear what you said. I am Deaf and cannot find any caption closed. Can you tell me what you learned about T dose? I had hysterectomy last year and my Dr. reduced my T dosage from 150 mg to 100 mg. What is yours? Thank you, man.

    • @julielevesque6034

      Very brief resume : he had his dose upped from 100 mg to 125 mg after hysto.

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  10 лет назад +1

      I learned that having a hysto doesn't necessarily mean you can lower your dose. I have had to increase mine. I believe it it because my ovaries produced more T then the average ovary, so when they were removed I lost some T as well as all the estrogen. Pre hysto I was taking 100mg/wk and now I'm at 125mg/wk.

  • @AngeloTelesforo

    In fact any men produces more estrogen than testosterone if you account for absolute molar value. If you normalize for pico-grams by deciliter, normal levels for healthy adult men are 3 to 17 ng/dL for T and around 50 ng/dL for E. What happens is that T is much more pharmacologically potent than E. You cant compare the values if they are in different units, like U/ml X ng/dl and so on. E is very weak compared to T. Your mistake was to think T was fighting E. Sorry to ask, but don't you have a endocrinologist taking care of your transition and making the dose adjustments for you? I ask that because I am not American, and in my country (Brazil) gender transition is usually accompanied by a physician under the federal health system. That's the only way a gender transition would be acknowledged by law and ppl be allowed to change gender on their documents. Here you can't do it by yourself or with a private physician if you do so you wont have your papers or name legally changed.

  • @TheAskesis1
    @TheAskesis1 10 лет назад

    So sorry your physician did not explain all this to you. Where or by what company medications are produced makes a big difference on the efficacy and side effects. Once a patent runs out generics can be produced. And in the drug business, the name brand might be sold to another country who then re-packages it sells to 3 rd world countries with a small % sold back to US under different name coming from that country. You will have enough knowledge after this to become a Dr. Ha ha. Well, dear one, take care. I know your surgery is coming up. Best to you. Warm regards. Vikki

    Hey Dade I recently had top surgery, and just before I did my Dr called me to tell me my T level was crazy high. He said there was no reason to stop T pre-op. I decided to stop 3 weeks before anyways. I have not started T again yet because I am having back surgery in about a week. Do you have any idea how long it takes yo get back to normal hormone levels. Normal meaning what God gave me to work with, not prescribed. My Dr did blood tests before I started T, but he didn't run hormone tests. Then when I asked him about it he said that wasn't important. I haven't been able to find anything about this, and was just wondering if you, in your research, had run across an approximate time to get injected T out of the body?

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  10 лет назад

      Testosterone is out of your body approx. 10 days after injecting.... that's why we have to inject so often. I have no idea how long it will take for your ovaries to kick back in, though.

  • @gartezwargli4501

    What I actually wantet to say is that your body is still capable of producing estrogen even without ovaries. Maybe you should get those levels checked too

  • @colleenmacdonald2553
    @colleenmacdonald2553 7 лет назад

    why would you think having a hysterectomy would lower the dose you need? genuinely curious.

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  7 лет назад

      When a transman starts testosterone he needs the T to overpower the estrogen. Sometimes after a hysto a transman doesn't need as much T because there is less estrogen to over power. My ovaries were making a lot of T and E, though. Thus me needing to raise my dose.

    Funnily enough last time I was at my gynaecologist I asked why it was that compared to all the other women in family I was hairier. She replied that more than likely I produced a higher amount of testosterone.
    On a different note I missed the beautiful outdoors of where you lived before but this is very nice too.

  • @AngeloTelesforo

    Ovaries do not produce much androgens, female androgens are mostly DHEA (de-hydro-epi-androsterone) produced by you adrenal glands.

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  10 лет назад

      Agreed. That's why I believe mine were doing something out of the ordinary. I'f it were just my adrenals producing my pre transition surplus of testosterone, then I wouldn't have had such a dip post hysto.

      I know of another FTM on RUclips who was almost in the male range before starting T. It happens, and my intuition is that it happens more often with us than with women. I always had bigger muscles than the girls, too.

      The testicles convert some of the T they produce into E. The bone marrow also converts some T into E. Of course, fat is very proficient and converting T to E.
      Ovaries make T and then convert most of the T to E. All of the E produced by the ovaries is converted from T.

    video request ' i would love to see a new video on testosterone levels again! WHat are safe range levels and so on! Thanks Dade you have such helpful advice.
    I just post this on fb !
    okay guys I need some helpful input to allow me to continue being as healthy as possible through my medical transition! I have been on T one year and a few months now.
    I just had my labs done last week, took some blood work to check my T levels . T level is at 1760. My Doctor let me know he isn't at all an expert in this field when dealing with the actually correct levels when it comes to FTM T levels, but he mentioned my numbers of 1760 seem realistic for the goals I am trying to achieve. I live in Mississippi and there isn't any transgender doctors per say that truly deal with this sort of medical advice. Those that do have doctors that assist FTM's on a regular basis durning testosterone therapy can you give me some much needed advice on what my levels should be?
    Thank you in advance.

    • @ElectricDade
      @ElectricDade  9 лет назад

      eli ellard Hey, Eli. Optimal T levels for cis-men and trans-men are the same... so whatever range a cis-man your age should be in, is the same range you should be in. You need to ask your doctor if he is measuring "free testosterone" or "total testosterone". Ideally he should be looking at your free testosterone because that is the one that gives you the best idea of what's going on; it's the T level actively in you blood. Take a look at this link I'm attaching - it gives you optimal free and total T levels per/age. elitemensguide.com/testosterone-levels-by-age/
      Good luck, my friend.

      Bobby D. I am assuming that you are in the USA, so your results would be reported in the customary units used here. If you live in Canada or Europe, let me know and I will get those values. For males aged 25 to 34, the Mean value of Free T (FT) is 12.3 ng/dl and the standard deviation is 2.8. So half of cismales in that age range have more than 12.3 and half less. For males aged 35 to 44, the mean drops to 10.3 and the standard deviation is 1.2.
