My favorite album will always be Once Sent from the Golden Hall. Its the album that got me into them back around the time The Avenger was coming out. Its actually my favorite melodic death metal album next to maybe Gates of Ishtar - The Dawn of Flames.

I'm an old school hard rocker, favorite band of this genre is AC/DC.
Classic metal like Black Sabbath (Ozzy days). But as I got older, I started checking out viking metallic symphony types of bands back in 2000s which brought me to discover Amon Amarth's Jomsviking. This is my favorite album, since it's the only one I gotten on CD ... Raise Your Horn and One Against All are my top two picks. But for someone who is near 60 years young ... yes, I've one of the oddball of the family, and don't care who knows it attitude.

Their first album is easily my favorite. The epic songwriting, fiery tremolo-picked riffs, melancholic, passionate melodies, aggressive, shrieky vocals, harsh guitar tone (bordering on black metal), and gritty production made it such an utterly convincing album. It may very well be my favorite melodeath album.
I enjoy the rest of the catalogue including the newer stuff. I interpret the newer albums as a synthesis of arena rock, straight-a-head heavy metal, death metal vocals, and crisp, modern production. I enjoy them for what they are.

This makes me think of the Saxon song Predator which featured Johan Hegg as a guest vocalist.
Also, I like how you mashed As Loki Falls with Father of The Wolf into one song title 😆

I was surprised to see your opinion on this new album. I remember how much you loved berserker 3 years ago. Also I think get in the ring is definitely boring, but other songs like find a way or make one, oden owns you all, and saxons and Vikings are fun songs.
Idk, the album has kinda gotten under my skin in ways I didn’t expect after second listen onwards, my first listen also left me very disappointed, but it grew on me big time so idk anymore
Edit: oh yeah, skalgul rides with me is a “what the hell” level failure as well, it has the same issue as get in the ring, they came up with the semi catchy but slow riff and called it a day for clever songwriting and never took those 2 songs anywhere from there, leaving it boring as hell and they just plod along until they sorta just end

To me Jomsviking is the best AA album, really... I love all of them but Jomsviking has the perfect balance between brutal yet catchy riff, strong songwriting and incredibile and memorable vocals... No song is lacking, and On A See Of Blood holy shit that song is mind-blowing

Vs the World as an album is their best for my taste too (almost zero filler tracks), but Amon Amarth is one of those bands that I can only love songs from albums. They always have 1-2 amazing songs in each album and everything else is filler, like mainstream pop groups... I am certain that is an accident in their case, instead of manufactured as is the general case with popular music.

I first discovered Amon Amarth a little late, I was an early Opeth fan(My Arms, Your Hearse) and I'd found out that Martin Lopez had first played in Amon, so I went down to HMV to get Once Sent, but all they had was Fate of Norns, so I said, "You gotta start somewhere", and bought it. Instant fan, which is why Fate of Norns is my favorite, but I got all their albums previous and later up until Deciever, but then I just lost interest. Nothing I heard on Jomviking made me want to buy it. I never even knew about Berserker until today, and The Great Heathen Army flew way under the radar for me. I guess the first 9 albums of Viking Death Metal were enough for me.

Good list for the most part! I concur on the general placement, except I like Avenger and Crusher more, those albums need more love.
    My list would be about:
Favorite: With Oden on Our Side - 10/10
    2) Versus the World - 10/10
    3) Twilight of the Thundergod - catchiest album for sure, I love it. 9/10
    4) Once Sent from the Golden Hall 9/10
    5) Crusher 8.5/10
    6) Avenger 8.5/10
    7) Surtur Rising - last godly good AA album. 8/10
    8) Fate of Norns (this album used to be what AA fans liked least... then the band started releasing their increasingly bad autopilot albums after Deceiver). 8/10
    9) Deceiver of the Gods - last truly good AA album, but the problems in the songwriting start showing up, subtly. 7.5/10
    10) Jomsviking - a few good songs, I too love One Thousand Burning Arrows, but as an album it's pretty weak. 6/10
    11) Great Heathen Army - a very mild attempt at injecting some life into the band's music, but generally not a successful one. 5/10
    12) Berserker - an absolute dullard of an album, it shows the worst tendencies of modern AA to just... make xerox copies of their previous albums, with declining results. 3.5/10

The Great Heathen Army isn't terrible, it's just not what you'd expect from Amon Amarth when you've listened to their past work. Previous albums absolutely slap, but this one, it's like it's full of ballads, which isn't bad, if I'm in a mood where I just want to chill, I'll definitely pop that one on. At least the sound they use here is good, I hope their next album sounds like this and slaps like the old days.
Also I wish AA would remake The Crusher and The Avenger, because the sound quality on these albums is terrible, doesn't stop me from listening to them though, but still.

Only way to make the new album worse would be replacing Heidrun (goat song) with raise your horns. I think Heidrun is a better stab at the campy, fun, anthemic type song. Raise your horns bores me to tears (bit of an overexaggeration), but Heidrun is so bad it’s good cause funny goat, and I like the main riff a lot

Berserker and Jomsviking were definite letdowns, but even those I would put as C level. Where you and I are going to throw down is with The Great Heathen Army. This latest album is a refreshing return to memorable, interesting music. Saxons and Vikings is the best metal song of the year, it's not even close. How you can just disregard this album is quixotic.
Twilight of the Thunder God has been my favorite Amon Amarth album for a long time.

In their prime they just made good ass melodic death metal with lyrics about Norse mythology and Vikings, no different than any band singing about anything else. But I will admit, jomsviking onwards they got a little larpy and nerdy as they went more hard on the anthems and cast aside brutality and the feeling of genuine melodeath
