    More Melodic Death Metal Tier Lists: ruclips.net/video/3qx8dBnFKxk/видео.html

    If you're scrolling wondering why everyone dislikes the albums you like that introduced you to the band, you're not alone. Their new stuff has a blend of the more upbeat epic atmosphere of power metal with some of the heaviness of death metal. When I want more brutality for weight lifting I go to their heavier songs and when I'm doing cardio or gaming I listen to their more upbeat melodies. I can go to Amon Amarth for a lot of my metal needs

    • @MetalTrenches
      @MetalTrenches  2 года назад +4

      I’m open to all opinions. It’s all subjective anyways. Personally I’d argue that something like Verses The World has all of that epic atmosphere but with better songwriting.

      @@MetalTrenches Two of my favorite tracks Thousand years of oppression and across the rainbow bridge are off that album and they have an epic atmosphere indeed. But the epic feel comes from this angry raw power (which I love). The more power metal kind of songs give me energy via their brave heroic sound. Under Siege kind of explains it for me. Has a gloomy hopeless sound contrast with the heroic sound of finding victory in defeat at the end.

    I've been a fan of Amon Amarth since Surtur Rising. I've always loved how these guys had lots of aggression yet tons of melody and not to mention a cool theme of Vikings. Here would be my tier-ranking:
    S - The Avenger, Versus the World, With Oden on Our Side, Twilight of the Thunder God
    A - Once Sent from the Golden Hall, Surtur Rising, Deceiver of the Gods
    B - The Crusher, Fate of Norns, Jomsviking
    C - Berserker

      @hamachibeans4471 2 года назад +1

      I like it, but I disagree, I think it shows how they’ve fallen a bit when it comes to emotional and melancholic songs. Comparing it to songs like the last stand of frej, doom over dead man, the hero, and of course fate of norns, makes it seem slightly lackluster.
      Sure the part where it speeds up and talks about him seeing his father before being struck into the waves and the very ending are both very impactful, but overall I don’t think it’s their best song

    One of my favorite bands, and I agree with the rankings for the most part. Biggest difference in opinion would be the disparity in ranking between the avenger and the crusher, as I view these like 2 sides of the same coin (plus, the crusher was my intro to the band, so a bit of a soft spot for it). Yet to hear the new one though. I also enjoy Vs the world more than you seem to, but thanks as always for these lists!

    I always try to listen to an album(whether it's this or any other band) as if it was their only material. Why so? Well, for example slipknot, the band that was at their best on iowa. Just because that album exists and it's so good, it knocks out any other album that sounds different and less agressive. Listening to a certain album and expecting it to be as good as the band's best material almost always leads to a dissapointment. So i accept what the band is trying to do on a new album and what direction they are exploring, and then i think "hmm, how much straight-up enjoyment did i have while listening to this album?" . And just because i get into it without thinking about their other albums and their best material, my enjoyment of the album really goes up. That is the case with slipknot as i mentioned before, but also Amon Amarth, speaking of the latter, i love every single one of their albums.

    A - Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds, Avenger, Deceiver, Surtur
    B - Crusher, Fate of Norns
    C, D, - Everything else.. worst album def Great Heathen followed by Jomsviking. Few decent tracks on Berserker. Wings of Eagles has a sick tremolo melody chorus. Ironside is good too.

    All the way up to Deceiver, I thought this band could not miss. Jomsviking and Heathen Army are slogs to get through. I thought Berserker was just alright. I much, much prefer their earlier stuff up to Crusher, but the mid paced stuff after Versus was always solid to excellent.
    I just saw them live a couple of weeks ago and they didn't perform a single pre Twilight song except Pursuit of Vikings. Probably the first show of theirs I have genuinely not enjoyed. Nothing but fist pumpers and sing alongs. I'm guessing them playing Run to the Hills over the speakers prior to them opening their set is an indication of where they want to go now.

    In my opinion they really fell after Deceiver Of The Gods, before that although I enjoyed every album, I could honestly say that there's no single song I disliked.
    That changed after 2013 and especially Beserker seemed to try a little too hard, although songs like Fafners Gold, Ironside and Raven's Flight made up for the rest of the songs, most sounded uninspired and boring.
    On the contrary though, after Deceiver Of The Gods their career really took off and I'm glad about that. Although I don't enjoy their tracks/shows/sound nowadays as much as I used to, I consider them one of the bands that really deserved everything they achieved, they really worked hard on achieving the success they enjoy today.
    The Great Heathen Army was definitely different from Beserker and although there weren't as many memorable songs or riffs even compared to Beserker, I found it overall better because I didn't dislike any songs as much as I did on Beserker. I would just call it slightly boring, not bad, just boring and uninspired. It had many riffs but not many of the classic Amon Amarth melodies from the old albums.
    BTW, the solo on Find A Way Or Make One reminded me of the one on Valhalla Awaits Me.

Although Twilight might be their most popular album, I think they reached their high point with Odin, but it's all a matter of taste. I have to agree. While the lyrics are not nearly as cringe as the last two albums, they feel forced into the songs. As if they are being read to a generic riff and not built upon. Dawn of Norseman is decent and the last sixty seconds of the the very last track, The Serpents Trail, are great, then it's over. Easily the worst album in twenty years.

    Just finished watching your video review.
    I have to admit that I disagree on certain points but I think you did confirm something I feared.
    Disagreements:
    I think Jomsviking and Berserker were amazing. I keep coming back to these often. I also think Surtur Rising and Twilight of the Thunder God are great as well.
    But again, it's a matter of opinion and you didn't say anything that was factually incorrect. You do you.
    I heard Heathen Army's single and Put Your Oars. I wasn't impressed. Your review of the Heathen Army album unfortunately confirmed what I feared... This album is like what "Black Market" was to Rise Against and "No Substance" was for Bad Religion.

    As a die-hard Amon Amarth fan who has been listening to them since 2006 I got to say that I highly disagree with this list. Personally I think that they have gotten better and better with each album they've released. With that being said I'm going to say something highly controversial, Berserker is actually their best album when it comes to their super melodic and groovy riffs. Plus Johan Hegg's vocals have gotten deeper and deeper over the years. I was just listening to their Fate of Norms album earlier and I think of how far they have come since then. Back in those days they still had melodic riffs but they weren't quite as catchy as they are now and Johan's vocals we're way too high pitch and screechy. Right now I am working on my review for The Great Metal Debate's RUclips channel for The Great Heathen Army and as a slight spoiler, I'll go ahead and tell you that I think it doesn't surpass Berserker but it's still almost as good. Everything you said about the song "Heidrun" I respectfully disagree with as that is my favorite song on the new album. As always, I enjoy your content even if we have differing opinions. 🤘

    A lot of their music is really samey for me to be honest. And that's not a bad thing. As I love their music. Though berserker didn't have the same energy as their older stuff.
    To me their best album was
    Jomsviking.
    Twilight of the thunder God.
    Everything else.
    And then berserker at the very bottom.
    I havent listened to heathen yet.

    Really like their first 6 records (espescially the first two, maybe it's my black metal preference showing...dunno), but man have the albums nosedived in quality ever since.
    The last three espescially are grating, I hope they can spin this around and don't become the "new In Flames", but at this point I doubt it.

      @@jakobh.7409 matter of fact I did, new Amon Amarth just doesn't sound imposing to me and has kinda turned into "party Metal" as far as I'm concerned. Compare their old albums such as Once Sent from the Golden Hall or Avenger to their new stuff, it sounds vastly different.

    • @jakobh.7409
      @jakobh.7409 Год назад

      @@jw7500 that's exactly what I'm talking about. If you listen to every track on TGHA you really get back to this imposing part you're talking about! But you are absolutely right: their Fans mostly love them because they put on a fun live show, so you definitely are right about the "party metal part. And these "party elements" are only a part of the albums as a whole.
      I believe that they sort of have to include some live show party friendly songs (which would be 2 or 3 Songs on TGHA) because that's what you have to do afer reaching their point of popularity. But the Album itself has such a variety where they blend light hearted Songs where they don't take themselves too seriously with some heavy and imposing Tracks.
      Edit: And yes, you surely are right that the sound is drastically different. It is really a matter of taste. But I think on an objective level it is rather impressive that they still experiment with their sound and have fun with making music.
      I feel like when most bands found a sound that is working for them and is working commercially, they tend to stick to their formula... While AA really had a development.
      I think a lot of people claim that their songwriting got worse but honestly I disagree. The Songwriting definitely has changed but I wouldn't say it got better or worse. It's simply different.

Also, I dissagree that they need to include "party songs" for live purposes. The old stuff is just played as much live, and enjoyed by the audience I might add.

    Honestly like, I'm fine with them keeping with their shtick. Idk what else they would do at this point. But it just feels like they aren't really trying with these last few albums. I actually think there are a lot of ways they could add some distinguishing layers to their base formula that would be refreshing and fun, but they just don't seem to want to. So stale, over-produced, kind of soulless albums are the result and that is particularly disappointing for a band whose theme has so much soul to it.

    Bro I am so let down by this new record lmao. Based on the singles i didn't expect TOO much, but i had heard the second half was "better". Really the only song I liked was Dawn of Norsemen. Heidrun sounds like a b side bonus track from as you said, Equilibrium, or even the likes of Ensiferum. The album closer Serpent's Trail is a decent one, but reminds me of something i'd hear at a haunted house theme ride at an amusement park or something. Personally, i cannot stand the guest appearance vocals on Saxons and Vikings. I respect the legend of Saxon as a band, but not what i want or expect to hear on an Amon record. Everything else on the album was just "meh" in my opinion. Berserker was boring and mostly forgettable, but at least there were a handful of bangers on that one: Raven's flight, Fafner's gold, Ironside, and a couple others. But there is almost nothing enjoyable for me here on this new one... big sad. Just overall, a big swing and a miss... 5.5/10 for me.

For the 80's may sounds badass but for 2001 was kind of childish to me. Specially knowing that wasent true about a evil christian empire invading nordlands trying to convert everybody. In the real history where the vikins inself the ones who decide to change their belief.

      @@MetalTrenches They can, don't worry. I'm a huge Amon Amarth fan and I agree with you for most of this video, don't get me wrong, but the recording quality really puts a damper on most of AA's earlier work. This very fact, along with the fact that I discovered Amon Amarth in late 2015, makes my personal favorite Jomsviking, but that's a matter of taste so I'll naturally respect your opinion. I started my metal journey with power metal, so the melodic part of Amon Amarth is what got me hooked in the first place. I came to appreciate the things you mentioned in this video too, AA really has a unique and heavy sound that makes them stand out in a positive way.
