Thank you.. so much ❤been scared to exercise because everything seems to flare me or make me have delayed onset pain. My doctor wasn’t comfortable telling me what to do or not do, and I’ve been scared of pain and flares. Now I have fibro diagnosed, and working on others with a rheumatologist to figure out. This helps me know what to start incorporating, how to, how much, everything. If I could give this a million likes I would!! Most helpful comprehensive beginner guide I’ve found ❤

Hey Amy, if you don't mind, I want to know, during the painful days, how do you manage your pain? What comforts you most?
I had severe pain since 2016 and diagnosed with fibromyalgia 2022. As it is a "not so known" disease, so I can't share my problems with others. Even today I'm also going through extreme pain, so if possible please give me some advices that might help with tje condition. I'm soo depressed and people even dont understand this!!

This video is a fantastic help for me! I've tended to unknowingly set the bar way to high and then get discouraged when the inevitable flare occurs (for instance, start 15 min of aerobic exercise 3 times a week and within one month increase to 20 min 5 times a week) . You have given me permission to lower the bar. Thank you!

I was very physical all my life even with fibromyalgia (since my teens), but starting at around age 50, the after effects of exertion started getting worse and worse. I'm now 63. Sadly, I only have a few productive days per week and need to use cannabis to get through the others. The mind is willing and anxious to do stuff, but the body says no. It sucks.

However, my pain is worse and my fatigue is extreme. Working with my doctor on my thyroid meds-- it might be an issue. I am so tired of this disease.

Fibromyalgia is a pathological condition characterized by chronic pain, stiffness, diffuse sensitivity in muscles and joints without any inflammation, disorders in memory, concentration and mental activity. It is not a diagnosis, nor is it a specific disease. It also does not cause damage to some tissues of the body, but 9 out of 10 patients report excessive fatigue and sleep quality disorders. Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
This is the reason why it belongs to the category of "chronic pain", in which the patient is in pain without an obvious cause, such as an injury or some other obvious disease or injury.
The video and recommendations are perfect what we do to our mother, it hurts but it works.
Congratulations once again on the perfect video.

I have suffered for 3o years. I have had to learn to listen to my body. Some people don't have overall pain. Mine is from the tip of my head ti my toes I don't even want to move a to as the pain intensity is through the roof it must take me 30 minutes to get to the toilet. So not all people can even walk are straightened up. I believe I cope with 24-hour pain, but I have tet to meet a person to beat a flare-up. I'm a fraud. I hope this program helps any of you I'm really pleased. The water excise in the hydrotherapy pool is beautiful, but after, say, 3 hours to get out of the pool bang, my body stiffens up really bad and laid up in bed. 3 days. So I plan what I have to do, and then my body says that's. life now as I have got to the disabling stage now. It is one of the most painful hidden illnesses. And after fighting it 30 years all it give me is loneliness. As I don't get out much and I won't even get in to a relationship to be a burden on any one. All the best xxxx

FM, according to newer studies, seems to point to it being more of an autoimmune disease involving small-fiber neuropathy & CNS inflammation. Not that it (or any) advancement in the study of FM is a reason not to exercise. Just an interesting thing I've been hearing about and wanted to make a comment for the algorithm.

I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia due to secondary chronic pain. The chronic pain I have comes from a fall I had two years ago in my shower, that fall injured bilateral everything. I couldn’t understand why did I have all the symptoms that fibro has. I have been injured before and never in my life did I feel the way I do now. So I already had injuries everywhere basically and now to find out I have fibromyalgia due to them, helps me understand why I feel the way I do. 😭😭

Excellent detailed information about exercises movement therapy dr andrea . S-A-S and its importance effects in managing symptoms and other issues. Highlight here is RPE rate of perceived exertion 95 percent patient fall in moderate category with central sensitization having fatigue depression flare up insomnia ....so here exercises & mind body therapy plays a key role .as a physio i used to do cognitive functional therapy to educate reduce the fear and start with light to moderate intensity as per RPE . So good exercises benefits dr. In india hydrotherapy pool is very very limited ...so i think low intensity exs is preferrable ....

Thank you so much for your videos! The fear of movement, when I have a flare - I was an athlete at a high-level - springboard diver, too, so always comfortable at that level with movement - when inflammation, fatigue, there's a feeling mentally like I can't move that way, though I can, that didn't used to be there - I guess with fatigue that became a learned thought (I had MECFS and Lyme pre or with fibromyalgia) seems both learned, but also connected to inflammation. I sometimes have tried to push but dizziness, rare, but, then I really need rest. And, I feel you understand, thank you!

It is really important that you see a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will examine your specific situation and tell you what you can and cannot do. These videos are for educational purposes only. Now that you are more knowledgeable about your condition and the types of exercises you could be doing, it will be much easier for you to discuss with your physiotherapist. You will understand what they are saying, and why they are recommending one exercise and not the other one. I think that patients who are more knowledgeable about their options are much better to adhere to the treatment recommendations. That is the ultimate goal of these videos, that you can discuss with your health care professional and be a partner in the decisions.

But how does a patient for themselves decide if they have fibromyalgia or myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) and need to be referred to a rheumatologist?
Where excercise might ease symptoms of fibromyalgia it does the opposite for me so it's better to avoid the excercise.
For me this is now permanently damaged muscles on my left side only as it was allowed to effect further up the kinetic chain. I was misdiagnosed for nearly 30 years. It started in my ankle now it's in my knee, thigh, hip, core and lower back.
How can the patient easily tell the difference between these two related conditions and know that it's time to be referred to a rheumatologist for a MPS manual exam before permanent damage is caused to a patient that actually has MPS? It's vitally important that patients can decide which they have for themselves so how does a patient know which condition they have?

I don't think it is the job of the patient to diagnose themselves. This is the job of a competent healthcare professional. My videos are for educational purposes only, to empower the patient to discuss these issues witht heir healthcare professionals.

I really want to believe you. But after about 8 years and loads of books and researches I really don't see how to do something like this. I would have to stop everything to be able to start exercising because no matter what i do always takes about 4 to 5 days to get better. And I mean just walking for 20 min in the supermarket.

Dr. Andrea, THX for making the video. I suffer with what has been diagnoses as Fibromyalgia (FM) as a result of the multitude of Spinal Issues like DDD, Stenosis, various disc bulges, Facet Joint Syndrome (Arthritis along all the facet Joints). Chronic Pain and Stiffness throughout evolving into Chronic Anxiety and Depression. Some better days, but lots of bad days. I'm 70 yo, male, and have suffered with this for many years. I have found that sometimes I can do exercises , but on other days exercising erupts into heightened Anxiety.
I was watch this with interest and respect your knowledge. I have yet to do the recommended Pool therapies (Chiropractor and others ). Are there any Supplements that you recommend ? 5 HTP, Turmeric, etc. ?

I just tried water therapy but because of covid I was forced to wear a mask (horrible while trying to do any kind of activity) and I am so sensitive to the smell of chlorine in the closed pool water area. I am also dealing with metabolic syndrome and on many medications.

This is an awful video. Whether intentionally or not they are blaming the person and implying it is their fault. Imagine you do as she says and then end up unable to move or sleep for a week? It's impossible. You might as well say to a person in labour you should exercise to get rid of the pain. Or tell a diabetic to eat sugar and work through the systems it causes.
It isn't about 'exercise or workouts'. Its about finding gentle ways to connect to your body. It's about forgiveness and letting go of the things you can no longer do. Not forcing yourself to do something that makes you worse. If your pain is worse after exercise you have done to much and need to reduce what you are doing.

Once you said one should start excersiing once a week building up to three times a week, it triggered a strong rection of nausea. I stopped watching here. Maybe you need a gentler approach

@@DrAndreaFurlan Hi. Thank you for replying. I have been going to a physiotherapist for two years, and I have a gentle regime, taking one step at a time.
I have watched a couple of your pain videos, and even shared one with my neurologist. He approved too.
