In this episode, Elle discusses South Korea’s 4B Movement and the implications of women choosing to distance themselves from men. Starting off with an introduction to the Korean 4B movement, she explains how women in South Korea are relating to this through the narrative of the book "Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982". The discussion includes the growing trend of "decentering men" and how women are setting higher standards in relationships. Elle emphasizes that women are inciting change by leaving, decentering, and avoiding men, and how this is altering societal norms. The episode also touches upon how women are owning their power and how their absence from private life has become a catalyst for change. The episode concludes with Elle encouraging her listeners to wake up to this shift in dynamics and to not be too accommodating or agreeable at the expense of their own wellbeing.
I saw a documentary showing how south Korean men are traveling to Vietnam to find "traditional" wives. Because the country is impoverished they can choose anyone there and the wife will be grateful and see him as a savior. South Korea has passport bros just like the U.S.. Every man would rather travel to far lengths to find impoverished and disenfranchised women rather than elevating themselves.
Passport bros exist everywhere even in developing countries. When the whole Venezuelan crisis started years ago. A lot of the Venezuelans were heading to neighboring countries. A lot of misogynist South American man were degrading their women counterparts for being a “feminist”, “Independent”, and “Ugly”. And saying how they were going to get feminine “traditional” Venezuelan women. So a lot of these men married desperate Venezuelan women. But the kicker was the women were marrying them for financial and legal reasons. Very few was for love. And once these women got what they needed. These men pretty much lost their money from divorce. As a lot of places in South America don’t have decent social programs. And these women were bringing in their families. And if they had kids, the father was on child support. The average monthly salary in venezuela is like $150 compared to its neighbors where it can be triple or even quadruple. Passport bros are everywhere.
They’re just giving us more women to grow our numbers 😂
Funny how Passport bros can only find "real love" from "traditional women" in countries where the dollar is strong.
They dont go to Appalachia, Deseret, or any other "trad" domestic strongholds...no, only places where they can wave a green card in front of a prospective bride's face.
They don't even need to elevate themselves. They just have to _not_ be jerks. That is how low the bar is.
Passport Bros are a global phenomenon lol 😂😂😂
once in uni, i overheard a group of koreans talking about the rise of feminism in their country. one of the guys argued that feminism is a western ideology that is destroying their culture and tradition. another one said, he would never marry a girl who will not perform traditional wifely duties because his mother would surely disapprove and he wouldn't want to be in the middle of a tense relationship between future wife and his mum. one of the girls argued back that not all parts of a culture and traditions deserve to be preserved-like child marriage and FGM. she says any tradition that calls for abuse or unfair treatment of another human deserves to be abandoned (i was smiling proudly listening to her atp) and being guilted or shamed into forced childbearing and domestic servitude is a form of abuse. she finishes with, "good luck with finding a woman who will be attracted to a guy who needs his mommy to make decisions for him" (my ears were clapping)
Im so proud of her man thank you so much for sharing this story!

My father acts like he doesn't need me. My step brothers and male cousins act like they don't need me. My exes have made it clear they don't need me. Even the men who are currently pursuing me act like they don't need me. So great, if I am not needed then stop calling me selfish for prioritizing myself over others if I'm so uneeded.

As a South Korean woman who loves all of your videos, I’m really happy that you made this video. The ultimate goal of Korean feminism is for every women, even those who do not strictly follow the 4B movement, who do not consider themselves feminists, to step out of being evaluated by men or patriarchal society, and to stand up for our own lives in the end. I’m again glad that your video understands this concept. Hope that every girls in our spoiled girls support-group will be the best ‘teammate’ for themselves! ❤🌹❤ Korean feminism is very inspiring to women worldwide. I like the principle of stepping away from men, even if I don't adhere strinctly. I am childfree and celibate for more than a decade but do date and am open to partnering with an extraordinary man. Have male friends and family but do not generally invite them in my home where more service would be expected than in public. I do invite my girlfriends and cook for them and enjoy showing them hospitality. Keeping some distance from most men does more for my peace and happiness than crying or yelling ever could.
Do you mind sharing what you saw?
I’m South Korean woman too and this is so true. I’m so happy that we’re finally discovered and heard from our fellow women worldwide! I’m so sick of getting stigmatized for supporting feminism in Korea. They stigmatize for nothing, they are not even interested in what we think.
Thank you from America. I appreciate that your movement highlight that it is women who can stop giving birth to men, so they should stop the bad treatment towards women who made it possible for them to have life.
Single. Childfree. Just turned forty. Live in Australia. No one bats an eye at it, any of it. Everyday I say a silent prayer of thanks for being strong enough for following my gut and not marrying. And to my younger ladies, don't be afraid to go your own way. It's a damn good life.

During the Korean War the men forced women to walk over land mines and die making the bombs explode. They did this so the men could then walk safely over what remained of the women’s bodies. I think that's a perfect illustration of how women are (not) valued in Korean culture.
And don't forget the generational wounds of all the women who were forced to serve as bed maidens from men's consequences of the war between korea and japan
@@crestfire8008 Wtf. Women are human being first and foremost. Our ability to "bring life" is not nearly as important as the fact we are already living human beings ourselves.
@@VeSpEr7iNeYes it was. It’s called parthenogenesis. Women used to reproduce asexually. They would only reproduce female children. Something happened where the XX mutated into the XY. There was a movie I saw years ago. I don’t remember the name of it. The women got together and made a rule to stop having sex all together to discipline the men. I think it’s a great idea. This isn’t just a Korean problem this is a world problem. A lot of women are abused after becoming mothers and easily lose themselves to taking care of their children alone. Even while married. Men abandon women regularly that’s why single motherhood is so common. Most men are running around with no restraint and oppressing women in the process.
That sounds familiar. Are you talking about Wives on Strike? It’s a Nigerian movie about wives going on strike to protest underage girls forced in marriages.
Yeah I saw a movie like that to force men of the village being the ones to go searching water. Women, even if they are pregnant, were forced to do it for so long it become a tradition. So to change it they stopped having s*x with their husband. The movie show that men used violence to have what they want.. in French the movie’s name is « La Source », idk what is it in English but I loved this movie ! I recommend it
They did that in "Chiraq" also

@@flowerpower7065There's already grape and disasters now. Something has to be done. If you snuff out the men in power and replace with women, you'll see a change.
I’m from Indonesia and many women are FORCED to marry (even someone that they have no clue about) through arranged marriages & early-age marriage because they see women who are not married by the age of 25 as a shame to family’s honour and considered a disgrace. The women are not allowed to refuse nor have a voice/opinion about this and forced to accept it. Come to think of it, this “honour” thing was made by men to protect men and prioritize men. It was perpetuated by the father (happens to be the head of family who controls the entire family’s POV) to protect their “pride” and “ego”. AND I AM SICK OF IT. I wish more people in indonesia can have a choice to say no!!!
Arranged marriages are horrible and human rights violations
Had an Indian roomate whose grandma was on her case, trying to get her married. Roomate wanted to not get married and become a doctor. She cut her hair short before going back to India for the holidays, and said the men she was presented with all rejected her because she was now ''ugly''.

I'm on the lgbtq spectrum and I was on the lesbian subreddit the other day. Someone posted about how they are being forced to marry a man despite being a lesbian and not wanting to be married. Broke my heart. I hope that woman and anyone forced into marriage finds peace someday.
The female workforce grows stronger every year, women have a big impact on the current economy, and women choose education over traditional life roles bc they are very limiting (on purpose). Tho there are still a lot of unfortunate women in these situations that you described which they cannot escape from, I am cautiously optimistic that these situations will become less and less in the future decades. How a country/state treats it's women speaks volume about it. I come from a Goddess-centred state in India, Bengal. Our language is gender-neutral, so is our society. But here's the thing: women are celebrated here, just like our goddesses. A girl being born is seen as an embodiment of Goddess Laxmi coming into your household.
Bengalis know the Source/Shakti is where everything in this world comes from. Even the name of our captial city Kolkata comes from 'Kalikatta' which translates to 'land of Kali'. Our women are rational, logical, yet feminine & fierce, just like Mother Kali & Goddess Durga.
And that is the reason majority of men from northern states hates us Bengali women. Because we see right through their BS.
I walk around here freely at 3am without worries, ordering takeouts after midnight. Never felt the same anywhere else in India.
That sounds amazing ❤
I remember watching a documentary that showed the contrast of two different villages and tribes in India.
The one that that had been practicing male children preference for decades/centuries was dying out and the other tribe that honored and valued their girls were thriving.
@@ogolden8315 That's the issue with rural areas in India. Which is why our Supreme Court did take necessary action required to prevent mistreatment of girl childs.
Then again, being the 3rd largest Asian country, a lot of areas do go under the radar. Hence, an unknown number of unreported crimes.
But our govt is trying, and situation is improving too.

Here's a better answer to your question that you asked your uncle: To get married or to not get married is your choice, but you shouldn't be framing the question that way. You ask "why do I need a man?" as if anyone is doubting your ability to live independently. Any human, man or woman, can do that.. if they really wanted to. You don't really need a man to survive these days (except for the men who built the roads, homes, electrical grid, plumbing, etc, but you get what I mean). But what kinda life is that? Sure you're surviving, but are you truly living? I haven't had kids myself yet, I'm only a 22 y/o man, and I used to hate kids. But watching my older sister have kids, babysitting my nieces and nephews, my in laws too, I couldn't imagine my life if they weren't around. He also said, that we will become old, saggy and ugly after 50, and no one in society would want to put time into us or help us. How disgusting is this mindset!!!
What's your opinion on the marriage between charlie johns and Eunice Winstead? I think its a iconic marriage and marriages like that need a comeback.
Life without purpose is a miserable life,
Your children give you purpose.
And having children of your own is not actually possible without marriage.
MAGTOW moment in the west is also extreme,
4B moment is extreme too.

God him self has made and encouraged the institution of marriage.

We have to balance spiritual pursuit and material pursuit as God him self asked us to balance.

Totally agree!🙂 As a Korean-American woman, I can relate on so many levels. Until I clicked on this video, I wasn’t aware of the 4B movement. I remembered the #MeToo movement though. Though I was born and raised in the U.S., I was mostly surrounded by Korean adults during my early childhood. My father had a violent temper, and was abusive toward my mother. At the time, she was juggling a full-time job, paying bills, taking care of the family, etc.. While my father was trying to run his own business and do as he wished. Eventually, my parents divorced and my sister and I chose to live with our mother in a distant state. In my 20s and 30s, I had mostly negative experiences with men. Now that I’m in my early 40s, I choose to remain single. I have no desire to get married or have children. My main goals are my career, looking after my mom, saving money, and traveling. Plus, I’m very independent and a feminist, which intimidates most men.

My biggest issue with the west covering asian politics and issues is the lack if insight into the whole situation. Meaning that the (male) west might give the Korean women a lot of hate for this without considering how Korean women have been thrown away before even seeing the light of day for decades. I knew aborting girls was a common practice in China where now the government forbid doctors to disclose the gender to becoming parents now, but I wasnt aware it was a thing in Korea in the 60s!!!!! That's why happy wife happy life. And men think they're the prize💀 you are nothing without women
I feel like men subconsciously know that they are nothing without woman which leads to a weird inferiority-superiority complex. "Having" a girl/wife/woman is then a status symbol to other men that they are worth something, thus the dehumanization of women. Women become property (the "having" language is so possessive) and a trophy to show that you've won at life.
Surprisingly, I think the Barbie movie does a great job of showing this deep insecurity that men have through Ken - tho exaggerated by flipping the power dynamics in Barbie world. Basically, as women gain the power to de-center men in their lives, this insecurity is laid bare.

They don't feel like they missed anything from what I've heard, they feel disappointed that their love and effort went unappreciated by all the men they met. Their flower wilted due to men. Let's never forget how female kpop idols have to be in the perfect image of a man to succeed, like with Red Velvet's Irene, who once read a feminist book and hurt men started to hate on her and burn or cut the photos that they had of her. Or even just last month with the release of wife from (G)I-DLE was banned from being broadcasted on a tv channel for "inappropriate language" when it's a song about not wanting to be a traditional wife and the only inappropriate language is innuendos, which is far from the first song to have s*xual innuendos, and their title track Super Lady, which did extremely well, in terms of sells and views and downloads, and yet they haven't been able to win that many awards since it's a very feminist song (this is speculation but I fully believe it, especially when you look their past all kill comebacks)

This is a true feminist movement. I hate that in the west, “feminism” is just thrown around and has lost its meaning.
It seems to be thrown around by men who don't bother looking up the real definition and just want to see it as threat
How is this "true feminism" in any way? Feminism should be about having a choice... whether or not you want to have children, date men or women is completely up to you, but this movement only suggests the extreme... "no heterosexual relationships" and "no childbirth" wtf. That is the opposite of freedom, that is just another equally opposite version of control. Controlling what women should or shouldn't do, deeming it good or bad. No, I guarantee this is nothing like feminism in its original form.
Thats about intersectional feminism you are writing, try out radfem, they are battling with patriarchy for female only rights.
Real feminism has been labeled as "radfem", "feminazi", "misandry" and "terf" in the west 🙄

Kim Jiyoung 1982 also has a movie and a drama if I am correct. I've seen the movie and it's really good. The most hard hitting scene for me was when Jiyoung's husband comes home from work and sits at the table with a beer. He sees his wife, who has been wearing a wrist brace for a while, washing toddler toys and folding laundry. He asks her why she isn't resting her wrist when the doctor told her too. She responds with, "Well the laundry still has to be done." And he sits at the table with this sad look of agony on his face because you can tell he loves his wife and worries about her, BUT STILL it doesn't even occur to him to get up and help her. Like DAANG bro. Kind of hated the end of the movie though because it basically ended a few years down, their toddler is around 5, less demanding, Jiyoung's post-partum depression has passed and she can go back to work while her husband who has 'seen the light(?)' now picks the kid up from school. So everything worked out in the end once baby phase was over! I'm like nah... the problems do not just go away like that. It kind of made it seem like once Jiyoung got 'cured' and her husband stepped up a bit everything was ok. Like her depression was the main problem and not the loss of her career she loved and social circle with the baby, her dad barely gaving her a second thought while doting on baby brother her whole life, demeaning in-laws and her husband's lack of help.

7:00 about the way the husband acts is basically what marriages are in Brazil now a days as well and a huge number of 30+ women gave up on men and most divorced women want absolutly nothing to do with marriage again. Marriage with working mom here in Brazil is just like this: Women do everything home related plus working outside while husband go 50/50 and do nothing besides working and cheating or having an affair in his free time (men in Brazil still see cheating as being some kind of status around his male friends). And if women stay at home their work is seen by men as being lazy doing nothing and free labor for granted and many times being treated horrible by the husband because "he brings the money and do everything and she can't leave him anyways" . It's an issue in Brazil as well all the problems around the interaction of males with females and women are rethinking marriage a lot.
Mistreatment disincentivizes partnership and family formation. When you disincentivize something it goes away. Economics 101. Tax cigarettes and a lot of people will stop smoking cigarettes. Mistreatment is like interpersonal taxation, so it's no wonder women in Korea and other countries respond logically by giving up on relationships
I am from Brazil and am feed up already. Child and marriage free, and don't plan to change that. 4B just makes sense. Read somewhere a quote that said: (to men) "If that's the best you can offer, thank you, but I decline".

There is a Korean proverb that says a woman should be spanked once every three days. It is shortened to "Samilhan". In Korea, there are many couples who use dating accounts, and all foreign women say that they pay in Dutch, and even if they drink coffee with their own money, they mock them as "kimchi women" - a language combining kimchi and woman, and serve in the military for about two years. There is a custom called Gunmu-sae, in which he talks about it to women until he dies.

I'm with a great man right now. Good job, emotionally intelligent, level headed, lots of skills. Hard to imagine a better man than him. The thing is, even with the BEST man, the woman still does 70-100% of childcare while trying to have a life and career of her own. Korea is a *very* patriarchal society and I'm glad this is starting to be overturned. Even during traditional holidays such as Chuseok and Seollal, women are expected to stay home and prepare food while the men share drinks, talk, meet friends outside, etc. For the longest time, it was also considered normal for women to do *ALL* household deeds while men did nothing, and while this has changed considerably over the past several years, some of this still remains.
I'm a Korean boy raised in a Korean household in America, but I'm so glad my family doesn't exemplify this. Both my parents work and share household chores evenly, and my dad will make dinner or vacuum the house if my mom is tired. Seeing how it wasn't like this in some other households was very eye-opening.
If you're not going to treat women like people, then they have every right to stop producing people. Simple as that.
Thanks for explaining this! Heard about the movement but didn't get all the details till now. After seeing men burning pictures of Red Velvet's Irene because she read Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, I also read it. Remember books are powerful! I also really recommend it plus it's a quick read.
In Korea, there is an atmosphere where if you offend a man, you are either making a big mistake or are treated as a strange person. So, no matter where you go, if you do not dress up in a feminine manner, you will be noticed, and even grown women will make childish voices to please men. Because they were daughters, children and teenagers had to work in factories to support their brothers. The girls who were gaslighted marry men when they become adults and live a life of cooking for men and being watched over. In Korea, most managerial positions are men.
I like this RUclipsr. And how she is on a heartfelt mission to spread awareness about the not-so-great ways men treat women. With the charm of a kitten and the wisdom of a seasoned sage, she delicately tackles the topic, making it feel like a warm chat with a trusted friend. It's as if she's gently nudging women to be a bit better and smarter for their own good. Watching her is like sipping hot cocoa with marshmallows-warm, comforting, and sprinkled with a dash of eye-opening insights!
Have been stuck in a bad marriage for 20 years. Stopped sleeping with him 4 years ago. Put him in the basement apartment, went back to school and waiting for my kids to age out. Loving myself and my kids. Strategically heading toward divorce. He is dumbstruck, never wanted to change those years I begged him to change. No more gaslighting. Will never settle again!!!❤
lol
Boo hoo
I'm proud of you and hope you manage to get out of that marriage❤❤❤
l live in Seoul. I don’t tell someone about what i am doing but actually 4b is real to me. many crime including sexually assault to woman but unchanged light punishment and blame victim. it made me sad and mad and got fear so protested it name under feminist. but these days korean man has aspect define feminist equal with evil and they usually has a more power in social life. I'm mentally exhausted So I do 4b to protect my normal life and broke patriarchy. I don’t know how many people do 4b and sadly i think it isn’t the mainstream. but 4b is clearly exist here.
How do they have more power in social life? Please explain more. Also, with this power, they will not be able to force a woman to get pregnant and give birth, right?
I understand, I'm Korean American and I've learned a lot about what's happening around the world.🕊
at the end of the day, any men mad about the 4B movement prove why it's needed. Because why are you mad that a woman is choosing NOT to do something? is it because you see her as a human person with her own wants and needs who can do as she wants? or is it because you see her as an object that you are owed.

I don't think the male politicians in the South Korean government will happy about this! Their population is rapidly decreasing. But good for the women! Also I know this movement is empowering for the women but I'm worried about how men will treat women that are part of this movement, they might get insulted and even worse for their mindset and lifestyle.
There's even antibaby zones in korea, so you cant just grab a coffee/eat out if youve got your kid with you. Shows what their society thinks of women and children.
Exactly and in America it’s harder to get childcare and places now mostly cater to only adult preferences (teens struggle to find places to hang out)
@@tiredoftheworld4834 is that really due to the patriarchy though? that's more so the fact that everything is expensive including going places to hangout, its all monetized by companies
Women in America need to get on this movement
We need this movement worldwide!!!

How do you think that will end for you? Genuinely. Do you think women will end up in a better, or worse situation? Women are overplaying their hand.
@@jimson3785 Women (globally) have realized that being single and celibate it's much better than dealing with men who bring nothing but trouble. So what's the threat, sir? My peaceful life?
@jimson3785 Cry about it. The point of a partner is to improve your life and if men can't learn to be better than the comfort of solidarity that's on them
I love it - if we don't like something, we can vote with our feet and we can just opt out, telling them that we don't want this and this is the end of it.
