ngl, i keep fish, and if someone said "it's me or the fish," i would go with the fish, lol. i think it's less a matter of op being overdramatic and picking an animal over a human being, and more a matter of op's partner disrespecting his bond with his pet. like, if someone i dated decided they hated my (human) friend without any valid reason and said "it's me or them," i would break up with them. any ultimatium of that variety just seems very manipulative.
not to mention that rehoming a dog after 10 years would be incredibly traumatic for the dog. like, he's already 11, let him enjoy his last few years in peace ffs

It’s the assuming he would get rid of Bruce without communicating her true feelings for 3 years that gets me. If you are planning on marriage- being respectful and honest with your partner is so important. she never thought to herself, “hey maybe I can accept my partners companion “ Pits were bred as nursery dogs,if she cared she might find out more to help her ease her own issues. Or at least express how she felt so she didn’t waste 3 years of both their lives? My cat sat with me through my major depressive episode and I doubt I would still be here without her. there’s no way I would give her away, I will play with her, love her, and give her the best golden years of her life a meager thanks for all her love and compassion.

I think the thing about the dog story is that a dog is a dependant. Like a child, it relies entirely on you for their mental and physical well-being. A partner does not. A partner can depend on you for some things, but ultimately, they are in control of and capable of providing for themself.
When you take on a partner you are agreeing to support them. But when you take on a dog, you are agreeing to sustain them and care for them and be their sole means of survival until the day they pass. If you’re not willing to take in that responsibility for the life span of an animal, you should not have that animal. And if something in your life is a threat to that animal, even your partner, then as the sole caretaker of it, it’s your responsibility to seperate that dependant from the threat. Any person or partner who does not understand the commitment of having an animal is not someone I would want to have any dependants with, be they pets or children.

I adopted three street dogs when they were puppies (which, side note, would absolutely not get rehomed in a country where there are likely hundreds of thousands in the streets and where there us a massive stigma against them) and raised them as domestic house pets for 5 years and then my EX expected me to abandon them because he could no longer get a visa in the country we lived in. He had also raised them, mind you. I absolutely used the dependent argument that you have said here, almost verbatim.
They are my family, I am their world. He is a big boy and can take care of himself.
When he got upset and said indignantly, "You love the dogs more than you love me and you'll choose the dogs over me?"
He was even more indignant when I said they need me and yeah, I do love and choose them, you can take care of yourself." (Yeah, not really, but at 33 years old, it was about time he learned!)
He had been pretty mean to them at times too, which we used to fight about constantly because, of course, I would protect them. One of my dogs also bit him when he was shouting at me 😅.
The dogs and I are now much happier and life is much more peaceful.

Pets are nothing like children and they're absolutely fine being rehomed. I got my cat when she was already 9 years old, she's 13 now and as happy as can be. I feed like 25 feral cats and she has it so good compared to them, being rehomed as a pet - from one safe warm home with food to another safe warm home with food is 100% okay. It would be harmful to a child because they're human beings with complex psyches who are undergoing rapid development that will shape how their mind works for 80+ years, but not to pets who basically just live to eat and poop for a few years. Rehoming is fine, stop pretending pets are kids.

@@swhitson9633 I think people are just recognizing that pets are a responsibility, that giving up something you care for is painful, and people shouldn't be forced to be or do things to please others. Or more importantly being something they're not or doing what goes against their values.

I get the guy from the first story. You can’t just get rid of your pet because you accidentally picked a partner who doesnt like it. You are that animal’s whole world, their family. Especially with how long he and the dog were together. Gf should have just waited out the years for Bruce to pass on if she rly wanted to stay together.

  • @Rosebudlola
    @Rosebudlola 6 месяцев назад +22

"Dogs don't know English". When they live with you for 10 years, they know what words mean for sure. They also know your body language inside out. OP said towards the start that Bruce was sometimes overly affectionate but inherently knew not to give that affection always to the girlfriend. Dogs pick up on how you feel about them for sure.
And maybe she wasn't abusive when OP was around, but what about when he wasn't? Dogs are incredibly loyal and forgiving, so it may not be immediately noticeable.
I have seen the press regarding pitbulls and the horrible videos of attacks, but in my personal experience, they have always been the most loving and affectionate dogs you could meet, that if anything, would lick you to death. I've met at least 10 pitbulls and maybe more "pitbull-type". When I was a preteen, I had no friends and was bullied (and also my divorced Dad used to leave me waiting for hours on end and not show up when he said he would)....I was so lonely. However, I had a staffordshire bull terrier who used to play games with me for hours, I taught her whole routines. She was so smart; she used to sit and listen to me read outloud to her and be paying attention like she was actually listening the whole time, sitting on the bed and watching me read.
So I understand OP 100%. Also, being a pitbull, Bruce would not easily be rehomed. He could end up with an owner who does not understand his energy and strength or is not that committed. Then Bruce could end up in a kill shelter when he's not walked enough and too much work for his new owner. Or it could result in him being adopted by someone who wants a pitbull for the wrong reasons.
    Yeah...rehome the girlfriend.
My own personal bias can't understand how she could still dislike the dog after three years of building a relationship. Also, a good partner loves to see their partner be passionate about things and even when you don't yourself automatically like the thing, you like it because it's important to them. Tin foil hat maybe, but I can't help but feel gf is some sort of jealous narcissist who doesn't want to share OP and who can't handle that someone else in OPs life is loved by him. I just don't understand her distain after such a long time otherwise. I'd get it if she'd had a traumatic experience with dogs, but it doesn't seem that way, unless she feels her family loved her childhood dogs more than her... Ok, I'll take the hat off now 😅

  • @missfitbrat271

Dude wasn’t overreacting about the dog. Dogs love you unconditionally. He’s had that dog for 10 years and dogs, especially big ones, don’t typically live very long. To abandon an animal in old age “for a partner” is absolutely ridiculous. The dog would spend the rest of his life in a depressed state and if you have any heart at all, you have to live with that.
The dudes chick pulled the bait and switch. She’s been with him for three years and hasn’t made a big deal like this about the dog at all! I’m pretty damn sure that if when they first started dating and she laid out she didn’t like dogs or “if we ever get serious, I won’t live with your dog,” or even if she was dismissive and didn’t interact with the dog, he probably would have gotten rid of the girlfriend and thus, the convos about a future and kids would never have happened because she wouldn’t have gotten a chance to be close to him. She played into it for three years without issue until they were going to move in together and she says that to him like she hasn’t always known her man with his dog either.
Anyone shitting on him that he overreacted and his “poor girlfriend” is dumb. He was blindsided by her feelings about his dog. It’s not even that she wasn’t a big dog person and just let him be the caretaker and she just existed around the dog… she is literally expecting this man to throw the dog away for her when the dog was there long before she was. Sure, she may outlive the dog (typically) but I would throw any man away that expected me to get rid of my dog.
For the commenters saying that he doesn’t respect her and she would be in danger moving in with him, I counter that he would be screwed being with her if she expects something that extreme. She may not prefer animals, but knowing her man has always had this one and she didn’t want to be willing to live with it is a huge red flag. The compromise could have been that he didn’t get another dog after Bruce dies or ANY future dog he owns is solely his and she won’t look after it, pick up after it, walk it or love it.
Either way, kinda vile and bold of her to think she could tell a man she knows is very attached to his animal that it’s not a family member and not going to live with them.
Throw the woman away. She has no compassion, foresight or ability to compromise

It’s funny to me that people think animals are less than because they don’t speak the same language that we do to be able to communicate what they feel.
That dog had more love for him than his own partner did because the dog fully accepted her and she was eager to get rid of him.

NEVER stay with someone that says your pre-relationship dog is a deal breaker. It's like how you should never stay with someone if they want to get rid of your previous relationship children (like wanting you to be an absent parent or sending them to boarding school). A dog is a commitment. A pet is basically a dependent. What does it say to them when they think you should get rid of a commitment because you "can't like dog as much as you like your SO".
If you don't want dogs, cats, or already existing children in your long term relationship. DON'T DATE ANYONE THAT HAS PETS OR CHILDREN. It's so simple. If anyone is willing to get rid of a dependent for a relationship thats red flags on both sides and i guess that means they were made for each other.

16:19 No “buts” !! It’s never okay and is a MAJOR RED FLAG is a partner is asking you to choose between them or your pet!!! How did y’all not loudly point this out?? It’s absolutely insane and cruel for the GF to even suggest to OP that he ABANDONED his elderly dog! It’s so insensitive and she clearly doesn’t really love him - if she did, she would have either learned how to get along with the dog for however many years he has left, or she would’ve told him a long time ago that she’s not comfortable with dogs and said goodbye then
It’s NOT OKAY that she ASSUMED he would one day abandon his dog for her!!?? That’s legit insanity

It's absolutely not immature to choose a dog over a partner, what's immature is her lying about her feelings about the dog. You don't just ask someone to abandon someone or something that got them through such a dark time, that's a completely unempathetic thing to do. To me it sounds like those commentors saying that guy is immature for choosing the dog or saying he's a danger to her referring to her and women in general as "females" give off a very incel type vibe

One of my small dogs has been attacked twice over his twelve years: once by a pitbull that jumped out of a car to get to him (dog owner's mother said the dog had a history of this) , and another by a blue heeler that broke free from it's owner (same dog attacked another dog later that day) while we were on a walk. Both times were terrifying. Both times could have been avoided if the owners trained their dogs better. I don't blame breeds, I blame owners for not training them properly.

I 100% blame the owners for not securing the animal …
‘Today's pit bull is a descendant of the original English bull-baiting dog-a dog that was bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head.’
Pit bulls were literally bred to attack animals .. and people are shocked that they attack animals and humans at much much much higher numbers then any other dog breed…
Millions of other dogs are also not trained properly… and yet they don’t attack and kill like pitties do …
People are so delusional when they don’t understand dogs can turn / be in a bad mood any day …
People need to respect and under them more .. and if they chose to have a pittie never leeave them unattended and make sure they always are secure on property

@@barbarella.artist many dog professionals actually don’t even think the statistics are accurate. 1) any dog that is vaguely pit bull looking gets counted as a pit bull on most counts 2) many dog breeds don’t get counted simply because no one reports their bites, if you get bit by a Pomeranian for example you probably aren’t going to the hospital and 3) pit bulls are also a HUGE choice for people who don’t treat their dogs right and try to make them “scary” without actual defense training because of the bad reputation which means the numbers are skewed due to more of them being abused.
Pit bulls are actually one of the most tolerant dog breeds consistently in testing, you know one of the worst? Golden retrievers. Basically it’s all BS to blame the dog when it’s not the dog

Oyr dog Molly sadly passed in September 2023, and honestly I was absolutely broken. We rescued her when my son was one years old. She was part of our wedding, our second pregnancy, house moves, me losing family members ect. She was always by my side, no matter what! I have gone through such a long grieving process, I kept listening for her little tapping feet in the house, snoring in the nighttime, and our kids were absolutely heartbroken when we told them.
A dog, is never just a dog. They're like another child, a loving companion, and our house didnt feel like a home for a long time after. If I was in that sutiuation and someone had told me, that it was Molly or them. It would always have been Molly. OP is way better off.

Idk much more than that but they have been together for about 5 years now I believe?

It also says a lot of the loyalty of the person though, if you think about it. "I've had my dog longer than you, and he's helped me through my darkest day." How much would that say if he did just dump the dog? That no matter how many hurdles, and no matter how much you bond, if something better comes along, he'll be gone.

Still don't know what triggered my rash but found out I'm 2+ on a 1-4 allergy scale for cats and also allergic to grass, dust, mold, every fucking tree outside but luckily no food allergy lol. Now I tend to get hives after cuddling my cats but I can't live without them so I take two non drowsy allergy pills to deal with the aftermath. My arms have yet to clear up on hives since my initial flare up but my cats keep me mentally stable and that's more important to me lol

As someone who's typically not a dog person (I love them just not to own, I like cats they're more independent and I travel a lot, also heart issues so struggle to be able to take care of exercise needs, not to mention I'm allergic but worth it tbh) BUT who has a very sweet baby girl Chloe (lab mix) who's like my own personal (unregistered) emotion support dog who is always there for me and loves cuddles and chest compressions (she's a natural at calming me and helping with my heart it's honestly amazing for an untrained dog) I would not give her up for anything at all. She is my baby I don't care if I've been with someone 10 years, they give me a choice they're gone, obviously we're not made for eachother and we'll be unhappy in the long run, and I have a strict rule against ultimatums, I'm fully willing to compromise on anything at all but a X or X you have no say and there's no other options or room for talking it out, you're gone end of story
Chloes only crime is she gets way too excited to see people and will try to smother you in cuddles and kisses for the first 10 mins. Unless she actually hurt someone she stays. She's made my bpd 100X more berable to live with and keeps me from overworking my heart, so similar situation to this guy, he saved his life and is a huge part of him and probably helps him cope outside of just his dad passing.
Even outside of the dog, she faked liking the dog for THREE YEARS, it she's able to fake that you have to wonder what else she's hiding/faking. That would break my trust immediately and I wouldn't be able to come back from that
For clarification before some ask because labs are high energy, I throw the ball (her favorite thing, i have one of those things for it you can use to whip it FAR, we live in the country and can throw it past our tree line) and I can do walks around the yard just can't run, and my grandpa helps a lot with taking her on runs (I live with them because of my medical issues and can't afford a place with doctors appointments all the time)

I have 2 brothers and they both have had 2 pitbulls but my 2nd oldest brother lost one of his pitbulls. He passed from choking on a toy. It got stuck in his throat and we buried him in our parents back yard. That was 3 years ago. Then he just had 1 pitbull then maybe like 7 or 8 months later he got an another pitbull and the other main pitbull lives with Addison’s disease. Now with my oldest brother he had 2 pitbulls now he has just one, the other died from cancer. Pitbulls are a very lovable breed I don’t know why people hate/dislike them it’s always the owners not breed. The owners just need to train their dogs better and become better pet owners. Any dog can be aggressive if they don’t get trained right.

Story 1: The second she made that comment about the dog, the relationship would be over. No discussion, no apologies, she's already shown her true colours. How the hell do you date someone with a pet then have the audacity to say something like that? Also these people calling him the AH, wtf is wrong with you? I dont care if she was apologising, she was the AH for allowing the relationship to go ahead when clearly they don't agree on the dog front. Seriously good for you OP! Thank you for backing your pup. Unfortunately there are too many people in this world who view their animals as disposable and get rid at the drop of a hat. They're family at the end of the day and one day you will find someone who loves their furry friends as much as you do.

Ops gf in the first story is absolutely the ah. Not only does she know the history of op and the dog, the fact that the dog saved ops life and helped him through some seriously difficult times, and how much the dog has meant to op the whole time shed been in a relationship with op. Nor did she ever have the conversation prior with op about her feelings about dogs and what she would want the future to look like. But you also have to consider, Bruce is at least 10 now, a very large bully breed, and also has a history of previous aggression in the shelter (thankfully op was able to work through that with Bruce, and it sounds like he is an absolutely delightful dog, but shelters can be very frightening and overwhelming places for some dogs. If he was put back in a shelter, an entirely new environment, and no longer had the comfort and trust of someone he knew it is possible he could show aggression to strangers again. Even if in a normal home environment he's very friendly, it sounds like op had to build a lot of trust and confidence to get Bruce to that point). If op had to give up the dog and he ended up back in a shelter all those things are going against him, it would be incredibly difficult for him to get adopted again. There's a real chance that if he went to a shelter again he would be put to sleep, shelters are facing a lot of overcrowding as is, they unfortunately get forced into scenarios where they have to turn away or are unable to help all of the animals they see. To ask op to give up his dog that hes had for a decade that clearly means the world to him, with a serious chance the dog could wind up put to sleep as a result, is horrible. It's a massive red flag, people were saying he needs to be mature and think about her feelings what about ops feelings? She should have made it clear from the very start she wasnt a fan of dogs, including Bruce, it likely never wouldve gotten this far if she had.
People can absolutely love dogs as much as they love people. Theres a reason people refer to their pets as family, theres a reason his friend recommended op get a dog when he was at such a low, theres a reason op refers to Bruce as his person. That dog saved his life. The bond the two of them have should not be minimized just because it's not a human relationship. Op literally described this dog as being like a brother to him, you cant tell me that relationship is less important just because its a dog. And based on what the girlfriend was asking and the fact that she didnt think it was a big deal, shows me perfectly clearly that she doesnt have ops best interests at heart, nor does she care about his feelings.

Sophia, idk if this helps with your fake dream guy cat allergy scenario but there's an easy way to overcome a cat allergy! If you can find a farm that has chickens and a barn cat, buy their eggs and either you eat the eggs or feed the eggs to your cat. This should reduce/eliminate your allergy. It works because when the chickens are around cats they produce antibodies against the protein that causes cat allergies so by consuming the eggs you or your cat now have these antibodies, kind of like how a vaccine works.
