Just to be clear: I'm a big fan of the xsr700/mt-07 and there are lots of things that make it an appealing option for riders of all levels, including beginners. You should get the bike that works for you and enjoy the ride! 🤙😎🏍
Jon's Moto Garage what year is your bike? They made suspension changes on the 2018 models and I wonder if that will help with the lifting on the front end at all?
Gunslinger 2500 the front end lifts from all the readily available torque in low rpm 1st and 2nd gear and short gearing. Just need to have some throttle control through the first few thousand rpms. The 2018 rear suspension still sucks as there is no rebound which makes the forks dive under braking. I’ve found using the rear brake first helps with that issue. Still a great bike. You just get what you pay for and on this one it’s cheap suspension which is ok for beginner riders.
do it- as long as you spend some time with the throttle in neutral to get an idea for how it all feels youll be good- just be super gentle til you have it figured out
New rider here, bought mine almost 2 months ago. Although it is a torquey machine that someone new like me needs to account for, I agree on some comments ahead of me. The power it has, made me respect it a lot more. The wheel came up on me once for a mini wheelie during my second ride. Ever since, I have been a lot more cautious during riding. Biggest advice I can say to new riders looking to buy this as their first bike is do your research and take an MSF course! It definitely set me up and gave me the confidence as a new rider. In my opinion, its an awesome bike as a first, just so long as you respect the power behind it.
I am a noob and I got one, love it. Have lifted the front wheel a few times which was intended and fun. Mine is restricted for my country with a throttle plate, 655cc and 54hp. So it's a little more tame than yours but I am sure that throttle plate will 'fall' off one day.
Just bend the throttle plate and replace the intake tubes. They still don't wheelie like he is making them out to though, in 2nd or 3rd you have to clutch up.
AUXRVIII you can 100% power up in second, I do it every time I ride. and ive accidentally powered it up in third cresting a steep hill, definitely not likely to get it up in third but not totally impossible
Great advice. Wish i'd seen this a couple years ago but I learned the hard way. Bought this bike and within the first week of riding the front wheel popped up when i took off at the lights. Freaked me out! took one foot off the peg and almost laid it down sideways. Came very close to slamming in heavy traffic. I know the bike really well now and it's an awesome machine, but like the video says, beginner beware!
I have the XSR 700 as my first bike and I love it. I think it can be a perfect beginner bike for someone who’s responsible and not aggressive on the throttle. I accidentally popped my front tire up once and know the limits now.
Totally agreed! I just upgraded to an FZ-07 after spending about 1.5yrs on a Ninja 300, and the first time I really went for a 0-60 launch that front wheel hopped right up and I was riding out a wheelie for a second or two! It's an awesome second bike, but I absolutely would have got myself into serious trouble if it were my first bike. NOT recommended for a beginner.
Depends on the beginner. I put 400 miles on a Honda grom, then got this. The grom was good for getting comfortable around traffic. But a rider that's not a dummy could get this if they took an msf course and practiced in parking lots, side streets, etc to get a feel for the bike before getting out in traffic and be okay
This is false information. I own this bike (my previous one was GSX-R 1000 K1) and no way the front wheel goes up in 2nd or 3rd gear on its own that easily. You're either doing that on purpose or your bike is not stock. The bike is a good solid bike for beginners.
A video I should've seen a week ago. I had an XSR125 to learn , couldn't resist to buy xsr700 xtribute in 2 weeks and now pretty happy with that. Heard of a similiar warnin' from one of my friends so have been extremely careful on the throttle sensitivity but I'd also say I love the bike
Short wheelbase, although not necessary the issue, does aid in wheelies. The main issue is the forks are topped out from factory with too-tall spacers installed above the fork springs; also, the rear shock length enables the swingarm angle to ride too parallel to the road surface causing chain-pull induced squat under throttle. The fork issue and the shock issue can easily be remedied and the result would make a much more settled and confident ride.
Do you all think is a safe bike to ride with a person behind you on the passenger seat? I know this may sound weird, but if the bike tends to go into a wheelie, how much is safe to ride it with someone on the bike with you?
Just bought this one as a beginner bike and I must say it's easier to handle than I thought. I'm 5'8" with 32 inseam and I can almost fully flat foot on both sides (even though I don't know why it says this bike seat is higher than the Mt07 by about 30mm). It has really nice riding position. If you are careful with the throttle you should be fine with the bike.
Great Review! I started on a KTM Duke 390 and now I got the XSR700 for me is more than enough. I feel I have the best of both worlds, the power, the torque, the weight, and the price!!!!!
When i bought mine in the dealership the dude told me to be aware of that and not chop my throttle on first 3 gears. It wheelied once by mistake but i was aware of that possibility and i was ready and aware of that and now i wheelie ot about every day😂
I personally think starting out on something that has the power is better. It teaches you to respect the machine. The learning curve on a bike is steep so if you start on a small bike you end up needing to sell it. Not a problem for you but a lot of people want a one and done deal. Also even though it's easier to wheelie I feel like wheelies on peaky 4 bangers is sketchier. That's my take at least. I think the pre 04 883 sporty is the ultimate starter bike. My opinion...great video Jon ✌🏼
The real test for a beginner bike isn't power potential, but how much it forgives beginner inputs which can be twitchy and uncertain. The more responsive and sensitive a machine is, the more dangerous it could be to the untrained. That's why cruisers make good beginner bikes, even with big displacement numbers they are chill
Jon, my man. How the hell are you keep making videos that I am exactly looking for. I was really torn between the iron1200 and xsr700 and you made some great points in this video. I’m leaning more towards the harley now.
When you were talking about the front end floating it really reminded me of my xr650r at highway speeds. Even though i know I'm planted every once in a while a truck will drive by and I'm in for a fun little wobble. Lol
When I bought mine ... when I left the store, I could see that the acceleration was very abrupt, assuming that it was limited, but it is only noticeable in high gears, in low gears, you don't notice the limitation, if you have this in mind .. for a beginners, everything will be fine.
The only wheelie I've ever done was by mistake. I was sat at a red light in Tokyo in 1991 on my DR250SH, and the clutch cable snapped. At the green light, I stuck it in first and revved at the same time. Never done one since. LOL
This is my first bike. I can honestly say I've never be nervous of the power its a great first bike in my eyes. Theres enough power, lean angle is good but on the twisties you will be scrapping pegs. However i ride with a mate on a FZ1 he will cruse in 6th and he will pull away even if I downshift through the gears to get the the "power band". The bike won't wheelie unless you want it to. The 0-60 is a race situation you're seeing how quick you can make the bike accelerate this will happen even on a 250.
I got an fz07 as my first bike. When i first started the engine braking to me was a bit harsh and it took me practice to get good at emergency braking, taking off, slow speed maneuvers etc. If you take an msf course and apply what you learn you are good to go. I also practiced learning the friction zone in my garage. With any bike you must respect the power. I wheelied a cbr300r by accident lol when doing slow speed maneuvers at my msf course :D . Fz07 is a great bike if you dedicate time to learning proper technique and practice a lot
@@TNNMN Is yours stock?? If yours is tuned your engine braking wont be as harsh. I dont even have to use my breaks to slow down most of the time saving me a lot on my brakes
I had a 1968 Yamaha YR2C 350 2 stroke that if I twisted the throttle too fast and far the front wheel would come up no clutch dumping. However top speed was only about 100 MPH.
Im thinking about getting this. Im 5'2"/120lbs. I had a ninja 500 long time ago, drove it from buffalo to kc and buffalo to Jacksonville. Im just wondering how low can it go as far as suspension, 28 inch inseam.
Well said! Definitely need the self control! Hahaha!

@@JonsMotoGarage i am deciding between this bike limited to 54hp for 3 years or the cb650r limited too for 3 years, which one you think would be more safe?, i am responsable and i love the sound of this bike but i dont if would be able to control myselft haha, plus i did not know it could got up that easily.
@ I've yet to ride the honda so cant speak to that side. I imagine you could get yourself into just as much trouble on either one. Lol. It's really in first gear and quick shifts from first to second where the front wheel can get away from you on the yamaha. Exercise caution and you'll be fine. Best bet as always would be to get your hands on both (at least throw a leg over at a dealer) and see which one feels better.

@@JonsMotoGarage i see, then i will do that, if spain ever stops been on quarentine anyway haha, thanks
Apreciate the video Jon! I have the mt07 as a lesson bike (im in Europe- a license), I love that one, feel in control of it. would this be a weird first bike for me?
What is the exact classification of BEGINNER ?! I own a dirtbike, been riding that consistently on the dirt, got it up to 70mph (6th gear) on the pavement.. But in terms of a streetbike, I've never purchased one...so in that sense I still consider myself to be a beginner kind of.. Or do you think a beginner is someone who has absolutely no to little seat time, no experience before...not even on the dirt...?
Looking to pickup mine this week. 2019 MT-07 with the orange accents. It’ll be my first bike and this review pretty much solidified my assumptions on throttle sensitivity, low-end torque, and floaty front end. I am fucking pumped!
thank you for that actual breakdown! not just: "the fz07 is the BEST BEGONNER BIKE!" i'll probably start with the drz coming from weekend dirt bike rides. you more than likely saved some people's lives or at least A LOt of money with this video
Currently owning this bike and loving it. I like the chill position that makes me sometimes just cruise, with the akra exhaust and the pleasant sound. I think the suspensions is what makes it dangerous.
I really like the sound of the engine and the style. I'm a begginer and in my opinion the only danger to drive this motorbike is to do it the first time without the knowledge of what you share in the video. Just take it easy with the bike, thats all cause it has de power to make the wheely so easly. If you keep in mind this I dont think this could be dangerous. Also a good practice in an isolated area could be the best before take the bike.
Don't let me persuade or dissuade you one way or the other. Like I mentioned, it all comes down to the individual. But I think it's good to get different perspectives and see what different bikes are capable of.
was on a dirt bike class, we had one student on a CRF 125 ( 126 cc) , he was doing accidental wheelie left and right :D if a bicycle can wheelie, any motorcycle can be wheelied by accident :D
4:19 that looks like a Pheasant, but I'm not sure. If it is, stay away from it. They're not dangerous but they're extremely dumb and will walk into traffic almost instinctly. It's just annoying having to replace fenders/bumpers every time they walk in front of ya.
Seriously considering this as my 2nd bike and well, I'm not a very skilled rider. However I'm about 280lbs. Would you say the wheelie issue becomes less of an issue with a heavier rider? And could you put a smaller rear sprocket to reduce some of that torque?
Just don’t snap the throttle hard on 1st and 2nd gear. There is no reason to do that unless you want to lift the front wheel, you should be learning smooth throttle control. If you’re smooth it’s fine. Practice.
Wow, that thing SOUNDS wicked... contemplating a bike, and it would be in the 500-750cc , either a fully faired bike with a more upright/standard position, or possibly one of the more naked standard bikes...and this just sounds so sweet and throaty... I have no need for a Supersport, nor do I want a cruiser style bike or HD... only I do need a low seat height as I am pretty short...
My first bike was a harley sportster 1200. Loved the bike and power was manageable. I ran mostly highway and some in town riding so I focused on more throttle control and riding defensively aggressive. I always tried to give myself an out if possible and it didn't always happen in traffic in Dallas. Haven't ridden in years since my accident and I know that I could handle the power of this bike or the fz09, but I get nervous because I'm not used to the front being so light vs. my old bike. I will probably get the fz07 and call it a day
Love the Videos Jon keep it up!!! And because of your videos I ended up getting one, couldn't help with the style and the price I got it for! Brand new 2019 model. The problem is I am a total noob first motorcycle ever! I took the class back in 2004 got my license, but never ended up getting a bike. Here I am 16 years later lol!!! Any other words of advice or tips you can give me???
Would this be ok for me???. I have been riding for 5 years now.. but only riding a old heavy motorcycle S4 916 2001 year model.. its torque but heavy.. i am considering that xsr700 or 900
Got one of these for my wife. I call BS on this "front when always in the air" claim. Yeah, if you clutch it up, like you do in every wheelie in the video. You have to be WOT to wheelie this thing, maybe less if youre trying to wheelie. Wife loves it, I love it, good beginner to road, but with some bike experience.
You’re a clown spreading misinformation. I’m an experienced rider, and own this bike; it will in fact do a wheelie with no clutch and only throttle and definitely doesn’t need to be cracked wide open to stand up.
Having to share my experience here...i am a proud owner of the XSR 700 for a week now - my very first bike every. i absolutely love it and i haven‘t even gotten to slightly pop the front wheel at alll somehow...i was going and fast and cracked up the gas a couple of times, but no risk of a wheelie at all 🤷🏻♂️ don‘t let his experience fool you - Jon‘s popping wheelies so often his muscle memory just sort of does it automaticall. don‘t worry, you won‘t accidentally pull a wheelie on the bike.
I've yet to ride a bike that wheelies as easy as this one, but maybe I should've checked with some beginners to get their perspective. Lol. Thanks for sharing! And congrats on the new ride! 🤙🏍
Jon's Moto Garage yes Congrats on getting that 700! Love it with the camel seat on the Silver Tank. But I agree @Jon’s Moto Garage, I’m about 98% sure no beginner we’ll be poppin’ wheelie’s anywhere near you anytime soon. If they had it in them you just turned em’ onto a Rebel 250😂👍 ...but honestly, I could see it being a little too much for a light rider for sure 🤙🏼
I did on my MT07. Leaving a roundabout could be "interesting". And pressing it into corners could/would make it do the booty dance. What you save in price will cost you down the road upgrading the suspension. Dave Moss is the man with the answers for that issue.
Great video because I can hear the bike, almost felt like riding it and good to know about the front wheel lightness, I thought it was just me so I would go for the teneré 700 same engine plus the xsr700 looks small for me
I do understand how scary it is if you accedentally do a wheelie. Tried to do a 0-60 on a xr 200 2009 model, it was my first wheelie, unprepared and i did not know how i handled it but i did not crashed.
Great Review and valid points. Ive been looking at this and the Ducati Sixty2 for my girl and I to get our M license on. I’ve rode before and want the XSR 700 but it’s been awhile. She’s 5-6” and never rode. Any thoughts on the Ducati or another recommendation that’s not a “sports bike”? This is the style we both like. Cafe, Scrambler, motard, etc. LOVE the vids, keep it up👊🏼👍💯
Joseph McBroseph. Thanks for the input! We are looking at a Bonneville T-120 as well. Those street twins are also nice. It’s def between the XSR, Ducati, and Triumph. Y’all have some great bikes. Going to check them out now. Saw a SICKKK Thruxton today in a metallic silver/smoke grey ironically, make me want to revisit Triumph one last time. Really appreciate your feedback💯👍👊🏼Stay Safe
Tons of good options. Looks like a few have been mentioned below. I wouldn't count the xsr out by any means. Just take it easy on the throttle. Hahaha!
Joseph McBroseph. So true brother. I know/knew that but definitely glad to hear it again bc we’re about 2 weeks from purchasing our new bike. I LOVE Yamaha’s and one of my favorite and most fun bike I ever owned (1 of 3 total) was a 2010 Yamaha WR450f with street tires. Tons of fun and good power, too tall for her though. I agree an MT-09 or anything with more power than the XSR 700 would be too much power and too tall for my gf. I moved to NYC about 5 years ago(w/no bike) and just now moving back to Texas. So I want to start back like you said... just “riding a ‘motorcycle’ “! We’re looking at the lower CC models of the Ducati, Triumphs, etc. bc some 2018 models are less expensive then the XSR 700 bc it’s engine and brand durability are so coveted. The Sixty2 Scrambler seems way more “manageable” for a beginner based off all reviews I’ve seen that leave experienced riders wanting more. It’ll be the XSR 700 or something less. Def not the MT-09‼️ So thank you for the reminder, your time, and your great feedback bc I do know me shopping haha 🤙🏼
I have the MT07 Tracer and love it. I don't tend to get the front up too often but then I'm not too heavy on the throttle. I love my bike so much. I want to learn to do a wheelie on demand guess I have the right bike haha
I've been riding mine for three years now and have never once thought that my bike wanted to wheelie... obviously this is not a beginner bike because on the engain size but if you have spent a few years learning to ride safe on a smaller bike, then this is a great bike.
i bought a used 2018 mt07 a few weeks ago. it was a good deal with all the goodies and i didnt know that the guy i bought it from, he had the bike tuned for exhaust, high flow intake, and ecu flash on a dyno. he showed me the dyno sheet with the bike making 96hp and 64ftlbs of torque. you wanna talk about the front end floating my goodness. it power wheelies out of coners in 3rd gear. its a little too much for my liking but like you said it all comes down to riders discipline. very fun bike. would recommend as a 2nd bike for a noob.
yea ik, i wanted a new one but dealerships are closed by me, and idk what the guys goal was. he did ended up buying a street triple. plus he put an r6 throttle tube on and its very very touchy.
Your wife is 5'5" and was able to flat foot it? I am only 5'6" and was worried about the seat height. Going to check one out since there is finally one nearby. I am currently riding 19 Cb300R and I can open that up all the time with no issues. But your "easy wheelie" demo worries me. I am 180lbs would slipping a little on the throttle really pop up that front so easily?
I don't think my wife could flat foot, but she was comfortable on it. It is very easy to wheelie but don't let that deter you. Just be sure to take it extra easy. I know plenty of beginners who start on this bike.
@@JonsMotoGarage Thanks for the reply its for sure worth checking one out. I am comparing to a Ducati 800 Dark. Wish more Japanese models made scramblers. You seem to really have so much fun with your family and motorcycles. Enjoy the rest of summer.
After a full bike licence has been earned at the least. From what I can see this is a bit faster than an SV650 out of the box. I been on different bikes across 26 years and the SV was too fast to open up fully for 6 months. Even the slow bikes are fast esp after a 125.

Well said, brotha!
Yea bro I find theres hardly any engine braking when I chop down..compared to otha bikes
Popped a wheelie in third but you dropped the clutch rather than just opened the throttle
All depends on the person on the Bike. I was glad to start riding a bit older. Nice Bike my friend. 👌
if you are worried about accidentally lifting the front wheel, can you just put your gear higher on take off?
The fz07 was my first bike blessed i never dropped it honestly if its respected it is an amazing beginner bike
Im thinking about getting this. Im 5'2"/120lbs. I had a ninja 500 long time ago, drove it from buffalo to kc and buffalo to Jacksonville. Im just wondering how low can it go as far as suspension, 28 inch inseam.
in my country MT-07 is standard motorcycle license exam bike and it's the one bike you have mandatory training before exam...
This bike has a super snatchy throttle response from zero throttle. It's probably not the best idea for a first bike, you need control and experience
Good beginner bike for those who can excercise some sort of self control. If so, the bike offers lots of room for growth.
👨👩👧 ❤
@ te la compraste al final? 🤔 si es que si, qué tal?
Is the m4 exhaust too loud? Especially at highway speeds?
Apreciate the video Jon! I have the mt07 as a lesson bike (im in Europe- a license), I love that one, feel in control of it. would this be a weird first bike for me?
I imagine you would feel right at home 🏡 on this bike. 💯
@@JonsMotoGarage Thanks Jon!
Informative andI thank you. Getting back into riding after many years.
I really want one of those. I've had an FZ-09 and absolutely loved it.
Heck yeah! No doubt you'd have a blast on the 07!
Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I'll look at the z400 instead as a first. I wonder if the xsr900 has the same float issue.
Thanks Jon great content, been looking at getting this or at least interested and I’m a beginner now I’m leaning more towards the bolt
Don't let me persuade or dissuade you one way or the other. Like I mentioned, it all comes down to the individual. But I think it's good to get different perspectives and see what different bikes are capable of.
I got the xsr700 as my first bike and it's been great.
I've had my xsr700 for 4 years. ZERO complaints.
I want one but kinda expensive.
was on a dirt bike class, we had one student on a CRF 125 ( 126 cc) , he was doing accidental wheelie left and right :D if a bicycle can wheelie, any motorcycle can be wheelied by accident :D
Love your channel bro keep grinding and your gunna get big! Great knowledge, good rider, chill ass personality, favorite Moto channel;
I appreciate the support, brotha! 🤙🏍
Thanks about this info! Sure helps a lot!
What’s the difference between the LW and the LCW?
4:19 that looks like a Pheasant, but I'm not sure. If it is, stay away from it. They're not dangerous but they're extremely dumb and will walk into traffic almost instinctly.
It's just annoying having to replace fenders/bumpers every time they walk in front of ya.
First bike, 40.000 km in, still awesome....bigger faster bike would have killed me by now....
I mean if it comes with ABS, I don’t think you are in much trouble. In many cases the ABS would prevent you from doing wheelies.
Uh no..
So lets say you put a windscreen on it and a windscreen on the bolt, which one handles highway better for longer 1hour+ cruises?
Without a windshield and its light weight, I avoid highways when it goes over high bridges and it's really windy. This motorcycle is a troublemaker.
Hahaha! Trouble make for sure!
Slip on or a full exhaust ? Thx !
Very good advert fo the XSR 700. Sold me on me getting one
Seriously considering this as my 2nd bike and well, I'm not a very skilled rider. However I'm about 280lbs. Would you say the wheelie issue becomes less of an issue with a heavier rider? And could you put a smaller rear sprocket to reduce some of that torque?
You'll be good as long as you respect the machine (like with any bike). Just take it easy and dont dump the clutch. Lol.
Just don’t snap the throttle hard on 1st and 2nd gear. There is no reason to do that unless you want to lift the front wheel, you should be learning smooth throttle control. If you’re smooth it’s fine. Practice.
i agree, when i accelerate on a 70% throttle the front wheel is barely touching the ground, also the front suspension feels like a pogo stick
I will probably get the fz07 and call it a day
Do you need a fuel controller when swapping out the exhaust
Love the Videos Jon keep it up!!! And because of your videos I ended up getting one, couldn't help with the style and the price I got it for! Brand new 2019 model. The problem is I am a total noob first motorcycle ever! I took the class back in 2004 got my license, but never ended up getting a bike. Here I am 16 years later lol!!! Any other words of advice or tips you can give me???
Heck yeah! Congrats on the new ride. Same tips/advice that apply for any rider: respect the machine. Enjoy the ride! 🤙🏍
Dude I still can't barely wheelie a grom when I try and she did it by accident how..
@@Tdunksmane lol ok bud
Having to share my experience here...i am a proud owner of the XSR 700 for a week now - my very first bike every. i absolutely love it and i haven‘t even gotten to slightly pop the front wheel at alll somehow...i was going and fast and cracked up the gas a couple of times, but no risk of a wheelie at all 🤷🏻♂️
don‘t let his experience fool you - Jon‘s popping wheelies so often his muscle memory just sort of does it automaticall.
don‘t worry, you won‘t accidentally pull a wheelie on the bike.
Jon's Moto Garage thanks for your reply! 🙏 well, maybe i am just too careful 😅 will see how it goes
What was the bike you mentioned as a good beginner bike?
Not sure without watching the vid back, but the Suzuki drz is an excellent option. Only drawback is it sits a bit high depending on the rider height.
Jon, your choice, your cash, XSR700 twin or 900 triple?
Wait do they make a non ABS version of the MT07 / XSR 700? I thought ABS was standard on those bikes because of a legal issue with European markets.
iulian pripoae 2017 is when they implemented ABS
Hi, at what RPM on 1st gear can you power wheelie? I been trying it but cant seem to find that sweet spot to make it lift
Doesn't it have a mode that decreases throttle response and therefore accidental wheelies
Great video because I can hear the bike, almost felt like riding it and good to know about the front wheel lightness, I thought it was just me so I would go for the teneré 700 same engine plus the xsr700 looks small for me
Ive got the 125cc XSR,i was going to get the 700 as my first big bike. Not so sure now maybe a 400 is more advised lol
How’s this bike with a small passenger?
Good, comfortable for both people (speaking from experience)
Joseph McBroseph. Hahaha Well said brother and GLO....let’s 🏍
They sell in Australia as learner bike they are called LAMS bike. They have a limter on it I think.
On the plus side, you’ll save money on tires with as rarely as the front wheel will be touching the ground.
Is my first bike. 11k miles pure fun.
That sounds more like dyno specs of a mt09. Stock 74hp & 50ft ibs torque for mt07..
yea ik, i wanted a new one but dealerships are closed by me, and idk what the guys goal was. he did ended up buying a street triple. plus he put an r6 throttle tube on and its very very touchy.
Also would you take this over a newer sv650?
@Jack ///M240i I went ahead and bought the XSR900. Haha
I've loved the sound of that fz-07 engine pretty much since I first heard it
I'm getting a used FZ-07 as my first bike. Pretty simple, don't do stupid shit or stunts and you should be fine.
This is true!
Enjoy the rest of summer.
what about as a second bike after a cb125?
After a full bike licence has been earned at the least. From what I can see this is a bit faster than an SV650 out of the box. I been on different bikes across 26 years and the SV was too fast to open up fully for 6 months. Even the slow bikes are fast esp after a 125.
