As an architect and interior designer with several years of experience, I would like to share the following observation. It has been the fashion in Architectural Studies for many years to teach us "multifunctionality", compression of space, tightness, as a brilliant idea. Living small, etc. A bit like those cabinets on wheels in the movie, which can be seats, ultimately not going to sit on them. Examples can be multiplied: Small kitchen? No problem, insert mini sink, mini dishwasher 0.4m wide. Make a mini kitchen, but necessarily with everything from a mini oven to a dining table that slides out of the countertop. A living room with a sofa? Ok, but choose a practical sofa bed. It will accommodate guests when they want to spend the night. Not enough closet space in the bedroom? Raise the bed and make a storage under it for rags. It's so creative! Approach this advice with caution my dear friends. What may seem illogical at the moment in contemporary design fashion will bring you relief in your apartment. Sometimes it's better to adapt your habits to the space than the space to your habits. Perhaps you don't need so many clothes to be stuffed under the bed and increase the number of nooks and crannies to collect dust, just one closet and better quality clothes will do. And so you hardly ever look under the bed. Perhaps you don't have friends dropping by for sleepovers at all, and a non-folding sofa would be a better choice. Perhaps you need that full-width dishwasher, because nothing fits into slim dishwashers when you have a small child. Perhaps it's better to invite friends to a restaurant or picnic than to buy a coffee table with 5 functions that can expand to the size of a dining table for 12 people. Think wisely. A simple chef's knife works better in the kitchen than a Swiss Army Knife with 101 functions. Cheers!
Same! Most other RUclipsrs have more stuff than I need (looking at you Matt D'Avella!) whereas Daniel seems to have just the basics, without having too little things.
I just moved in a 28m2 with my boyfriend and I have to say... multiple purposes furniture is key! We bought a bar that we also use as a cooking counter and an eating table it also seperates our kitchen from our living room and it’s brilliant.
I think that the sideboard is the standout feature of the redesign. It’s a very functional piece but has an interesting design. When I moved, I took the opportunity to replace the majority of my furniture and quite a lot came from Made. They have some great products at good prices.
I just watched how it was before and difference is striking, especially in the bedroom! The living was ok, but became chic and practical after, while the bedroom look like a complete different place! amazing!
This is such a productive video. Your observations about the need for a space to not just be functional, but also cozy/warm are spot on. It's also nice that you were honest about the comfort of some of your past designs. Comfort seems to be left out of the equation in a lot of these multifunctional small space designs. In some of these videos, you even see hard benches presented as "lounge space"
I just signed the rental contract for my first ever living-alone home, and struggling with interior design as it's a rather peculiar shaped studio,,, Thanks for the inspiration! and I will steal the look and feel of your new one :)
You designed your flat with 2 people in mind. Minimal, monochromatic & plenty of hidden storage. Nicely done. Made.com furniture is lovely, but realistically it's storage capacity is suited for 1 person.
I like the bed a lot more. I loved the idea behind the previous one, but I wasn’t about to do all that myself. Overall i’m a fan of both ways the apartment was furnished. Not sure which style I’ll go for.
I realized that after watching this video that your original bed setup is what inspired the inspiration behind a new loft I made for my bed. Thanks for that! You’d really joy it I bet
Beautiful small space living. I do love the small arch feature of the door way giving the room character, but not adorned with wood work facing lets it be mixed with any style of decorating. Well done Made for giving them a very comfortable living space to share.
I love these videos, as they help me keep in mind that with ingenuity, you don’t need a massive place in order to be happy! Also “over in the bedroom, things have also been changed up” (4:20) gave me a chuckle lol
Looks beautiful! The only thing that I'd question is the sense of transitioning from a bed that can be accessed from both sides to a single-side one. At the end it's not just about the drawers, but also comfort for two people to use the bed, as well as the ease of making the bed. Bedside tables are great, but this change resulted in only one fitting in... To combine a drawer bed and bedside tables, to me the perfect solution would be to go with a notch smaller drawers when building the bed in the first place, leaving a drawer-free gap at the end for the tables to fit in. That way both would get a table and both could access the bed comfortably.
Great video, really feel inspired. It is indeed really hard to pull off cosy. It is one of the things I most often find missing from minimalist home/room make over.
Nice to hear a British accent on one of these things... even if you are a southerner :) Totally love Made.com. They have great stuff at reasonable prices. I recently purchased a grey circular coffee table with copper coloured hair pin legs; it’s a winner. I agree that floating furniture works well in apartments.
great video! As someone who is embracing minimalism, it's a challenge to balance funcionality, coziness and aesthetics with a minimum of furniture/space. Your observations are very helpul as it explains rationally what my intuition shows me
Delightful video. Your presentation skills are excellent. Adding the softer elements does add such a wonderful feeling of coziness and comfort. I once lived in a studio which was about 200 square feet. I loved it.
watching your channel give me a lot of idea of what i really want in my apartment, i bought an apartment and it will be ready a couple of months. it freaks me out when thinking of what i'm gonna do with it because it's my first investment and i don't want to mess it up. watching your videos give me a feeling of being well prepared, and that it's going to be alright
You are right, the previous one is more functional and it served its purpose. But I love what you´ve done with the place now. Love the hints of brown and the plants too. Well done! ;)
Omg, it looks soooo much better. I love minimalist design, but there's something to be said for clean lines that are also cozy, comfortable and inviting. If I could afford it I'd buy everything. lol
Absolutely beautiful furniture, I really love the sideboard! You have done a fantastic job in picking these pieces, they go so lovely together. Have a fantastic day. Warm Regards, Fiona, Sydney Australia 😊
It's crazy how big of a difference the lights made. I always thought that the functionality of your space was what made it so beautiful. I didn't realize until you refurnished that the space before seemed very 'cold'. Either way, looks fantastic man! Keep up the fire content, can't wait to see how this space evolves.
I am running into the same dilemma while designing the interior of my townhouse. I like clean, minimalistic, polished approach but my living look is starting to look like an office space. Thanks for the tips on rugs to make the space feels more soft and cozy
I'm a fan of both. Your original design is commendable; there were many clever and imaginative solutions, done with taste. Only wish I was that handy. The MADE-over is gorgeous. It's exactly what I'm looking for to furnish my apartment. Such a pity they are not available in Australia.
Hi Daniel, nice space you got there. I'm also an architect who recently learned some interior design through your link on skill share. I would say I struggled with designing interiors to eliminate the 'coldness' of a space. One thing I would suggest is have larger artwork above your sofa and bed because of the 1/3 aesthetic rule. 1/3 for the bed/sofa and 2/3 art. The art should hang 6" to 8" above your sofa and bed. You can use a larger painting, or have multiple photo frames to create a nicer warmer interior :)
Imagine being so well off in life where you can have a flat like that, abandon it completely, and randomly decide to come back to it whenever, AND have a corporation decide to send you a shit ton of free furniture. This seems like the life. Well done!! Looks really good 🥺
Keep up the great content, Daniel! Just received my Oliver Cabell Low 1's using your link and they look amazing! Always trying to reduce the things in my wardrobe while extending the life cycle of everything that I own. Looking forward to your next vid, man!
Definitely prefer this one! I think my only issue with the previous one was the bed - it was too high and bulky. But since you needed extra storage space it made sense. Now that it's not an issue, the bedroom looks great!
Well, in Denmark you can buy fake candles (with moving flames etc.) - actually quite authentic! They are a great alternative to real candles if you still want the feeling of “hygge” in a small space. And - of course - a nice, fluffy blanket! And something sweet to eat!
I really liked your apartment before but I have to say that the touch of wood and more unique pieces really made the space sooo nice, I love it! Well done 😀
Love the rug and lamps. I know why you chose your coffee-cum-dining table, but I think it looks chunky in the small space. I wonder if you could do with a much smaller more organic-shaped (nesting?) coffee table, perhaps with storage beneath. In that case, instead of the sideboard (though I love its texture and curves, especially compared to the former storage cubes), you might instead have a more traditional dining table. I am imagining a narrow table with lateral extension (side-to-side) that would straddle an upholstered storage bench sitting tight to the wall under the window when not in use. Then you could pull the table out when extra seating in needed, and use the folding chairs on the open side instead of having to sit awkwardly on the couch to eat. When not dining, the table could serve other purposes, or just hold a couple of pretty accessories (i.e.: a tray, flower vase, family photo). Personally, I'd like to see just a touch more colour and pattern somewhere in the space: soft sage leaf pattern, a bit of blush pink, warm pumpkin, cheerful mustard... I'd love to see softer, less industrial legs on the couch. I would choose a desk chair with a similar style, but if it were upholstered with arms (soft velvet in an accent colour, maybe tying in with coordinated a textured couch throw or patterned pillows), it also could double nicely for extra living room seating when needed. Having slept for years next to the wall in a small room similar to yours, I wonder if you might rather have a bit of space on that side, with floating bedside lights and small wall-mounted bedside shelves, or even a narrow headboard rail to hold a phone, glass of water, book, piece of art... I would add sheer white curtains to the living room window, which would further soften the space with out adding any visual clutter or darkening the room. Finally, I would hang the pathos plant that now sits on the console. It would draw the eye up, free up surface space and look more interesting without adding anything extra to the room This lovely space has an impersonal masculine feel rather than a lived-in 'family' vibe and I wonder if you plan to return to live there again with your wife and baby? 👍
Looooooooove this! Small touches make such a difference in the coziness of a space. The more colourful minimalist that I am would have chosen a few greyish blue or greyish soft pink accessories because I feel that all grey is a bit depressing 😁

That coffee/dining table is truly *chef's kiss*
your minimalism is the closest I see to applying in my life ...keep up with the great content !
Same! Most other RUclipsrs have more stuff than I need (looking at you Matt D'Avella!) whereas Daniel seems to have just the basics, without having too little things.
Because it isn’t minimalism it’s modern
I just moved in a 28m2 with my boyfriend and I have to say... multiple purposes furniture is key! We bought a bar that we also use as a cooking counter and an eating table it also seperates our kitchen from our living room and it’s brilliant.
I love this new make over. It softens the space and makes your micro flat more homey.
Thanks Ruth!
The rug, plants and floor lamps really make the space feel more like home
Your content caused me to go into real estate and interior design. Your flavor is unmatched
im about to complete on a london flat with this exact layout and size pretty much. lol going to copy this pretty much.
I think that the sideboard is the standout feature of the redesign. It’s a very functional piece but has an interesting design.
When I moved, I took the opportunity to replace the majority of my furniture and quite a lot came from Made. They have some great products at good prices.
That's a beautiful sideboard.
Mate it looks awesome!
When UX designer meets a minimalist architect ❤️
Cheers Oliur!
@@DanielTitchener I want to know why you replaced your pc with a mac again
Oliur:
Im with you here... it is awesome and it screams "hygge" as Daniel mentioned .... Hench im from Denmark
you should get a new wall phone. the cream one clashes and could be statment color!
I will use this as inspiration for my new and very tiny 18sqm apartment. Very nice!
The chair and the floor lamps! It's intriguing how light options affect how one perceives a space...I don't want boring harsh lighting...
I just watched how it was before and difference is striking, especially in the bedroom! The living was ok, but became chic and practical after, while the bedroom look like a complete different place! amazing!

Same here! I think the other bed is arguably better if you need a lot of storage, but this ones a lot more pleasant if you don't.
Its far more open now. That other design i personally didn't like because it felt way too cramped despite how much storage option it provided
@@DanielTitchener Great looking bed - and the painted headboard looks great, but is it practical? Do your pillows slide down the wall or smudge it?
@@DanielTitchener why did you replace your pc with a mac
Not going to lie, I didn't know about MADE until I saw his original video of the flat. That table got me into MADE and into his videos.
Well done Made for giving them a very comfortable living space to share.
that oak console table looks amazing!
I prefer previous one because it was very functional and monotone-color (which I love). New design is also nice especially the floor lamp.
My congratulations for your flat makeover. In my point of view it's outstanding.
I love these videos, as they help me keep in mind that with ingenuity, you don’t need a massive place in order to be happy!

Hands down the best youtube channel out here. Learnt so much in a short video. Keep them rolling Titch!!

love your newest apartement design. So cozy, simple yet elegant.
Soft lights help and I never thought about how carpets can absorb sound. Wonderful video!

This is one of the best micro apartments I've seen so far. I especially love that side table.
Fabulous! I love the round top entrance in the living room.
When I see your videos, I don't even look at the title and just click on them and they're always good 🔥
I like both personally but this redesigned home is really giving a fresh new vibe
This is so beautiful, I didn't even know about MADE, gotta check it out now!
