Honestly, ever since I discovered one of your previous videos about minimalism, it has completely cleared so much clutter not just physically, but mentally as well. Your channel is so clear and coherent and I love your content. Truly a role model on this platform, excellent stuff mate 👍🏽.
Something that was probably implied but I think should be addressed more directly is TEMPERATURE. For example, you'll almost never see leather sofas in the Caribbean (in which I live) bc it would just become a very uncomfortable and smelly mess with time due to the prominently hot weather.
I LOVE clean interiors that people usually refer to as "sterile, cold and unhomely" 😁 i grew up in a cluttered house where you had to move 2 things to get one. I prefer to keep tables and worktops clear. And no open shelves. Ever.
Sterile and rather empty-looking rooms are not my cup of tea! In it you do not really feel at home and comfortable as I find. Can not quite understand the people who feel comfortable in a clinically clean room ^^ Even though I do not like messy rooms, my living room should look especially cozy and lively, with a few things lying around which fit the style. But everything has its place, I design my room intentionally with a little clutter, not too much, just that you feel comfortable. Nothing is left to chance! I live alone and when a woman comes to me they all always admire how beautiful my apartment is and that they have never seen such a nice apartment from a man ^^ Neat and clean, but above all my apartment should look cozy and warm . Women like that very much, to my advantage :-D
I live in a comfortably messy and cozy home like @PP described but I also found I've been fixating on the idea or concept of clinically sterile, cold, clean, glossy surfaces for a while now. I wonder if it's a wierd mental quirk or maybe my subconscious telling me to tidy up. I almost want to try living in an experimentally clean and empty space for a week or so and see how I like it. If it's calming, boring or whatever.
I agree. When you walk into a clean and empty hotel room, you don’t think, “Ew this is sterile.” You only think of how relaxing it is that you don’t have to clean anything up.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why many interior designers are so against minimalistic designs, but this video makes it look so appealing to me.
Minimalism is advantageous in many ways. When we were furnishing our current apartment, I remember telling my wife that we didn't need too many things to make it look great, but she didn't quite agree with my take on things. In the end, the first thing we bought was an LC3 Sofa by Le Corbusier at Manhattan home Design and she realized that, with just one iconic piece, at least when it came to furniture, there was already a lot of work ahead, thus saving much of the time, effort and budget. Good video!
I really like your video's, they are made so nicely and you do have a nice voice to listen too. I'm also starting to get rid of some stuff i never use after seeing some of your minimalists video's. Thank you for this great experience and see you in the next video.
I was trained to be an interior designer, I got many chances to work with the architect. You got a clear mind on how to approach interior design. And this Video, great work. Thank you.
I loved this video. It confirms for me that I do have good taste and that I have a great appreciation for your design styles. It also lets me know something that I have always loved and that is my minimalist style.
Another lovely video! As we've just moved into a 700 sq ft place from a 400 sq ft place for our family of four, it has been a bit of a struggle finding a balance of staying true to minimalism and having more space to fill! This video was very helpful! Thank you for sharing this!
I love your channel this video is a great summary of my journey the past 3 years. Design takes so much planning but in the end its infinitely more enjoyable because I know there isnt anything better than this item and it also probably checks all of my boxes
Hi Daniel. You make really good and well structured points. I love the idea of prioritising furniture that suits your main needs and requirements. You have a very cool and composed manner on screen, thank you for uploading this. Nick
Speaking of coherent and colours, I noticed many times parents allow children to pick their bedroom colour. While of course, that is allowed, I much rather advise them to be consistent as a whole house, and that the children's fav colour can come in as a bedsheet or decor/toy items or posters to reflect their personalities in their rooms. Great video!
This is very helpful, I tend to pick black sleek square everything and I found a good deal on a round wood rough coffee table and was concerned that it would clash but after watching this I think its a good choice. Its easier to move around and it softens the room. Ying and yang.
Have a project coming up in a couple of years and your videos are really a big help for reference and such. Stay awesome and I'll see you on the next one :)
Couldn't agree more about colors. I consider myself not-so-good with interior design but quickly realized that I need calming colors in my living and bath room. Bright red or yellow can be fine in the kitchen though!
These are great principles, engagingly delivered. I like maximal interiors designed with a minimal mindset. I can't imagine buying grey furniture and I have dozens of paintings on my walls. I like a layered interior and vintage furniture, but everything must have its place. Tonal range is as important as shade when you're picking colours, but yes, it must all harmonise somehow or other!
"...what makes good design great design is how constraints are elegantly navigated to provide compelling solutions." spoken like an architect/designer lol! definitely was snapping my fingers for that. I'm with you man! navigating while working within the parameters is the thrill of it all! aspiring architect here and hoping to start my own youtube channel as well.
Great advices!! In my opinion this type of video is what differentiates you from other youtubers and where the content itself shines at its very best. There's so many similar videos out there about productivity, notion, etc... (not saying there's anything wrong with those, I think we all enjoy them too), but your unique input as an architect makes the ones about smart use of space the most interesting
Your channel really have become a great help for me, now that I moved into a space that is kind of small ever since my ex and I broke up. So naturally I now have to live the minimalist lifestyle now, which isn't a problem at all.
I love the set of considerations. So many thinks in life are a trade of or finding a balance that is right for yourself. It’s great to have a video like this that lays out the dimensions and their extremes so one can pick for one self. Just a note: it would be super useful if your B roll out show examples of both extremes you are talking about. Move of the b roll was very clean and minimal. I found myself looking for counter examples.
Daniel, great vid! But I’d rename the video to 6 things to consider for interior design as this video wasn’t super geared toward minimalism (still an awesome vid!)
This was genuinely helpful and practical advice. Thank you! I'd love to hear more about how architects think that would be helpful for the layperson to hear and follow. Also talking about resources that are approachable to the lay person for inspiration or other tips. Great video! :)
I love these kinds of videos about interior design, minimalism, and your videos specifically, all taken separately... combining them all together in one video = 👌🏻 I also tend towards liking Scandinavian and mid-century modern design, with some elements of industrial and “cosy glam”/art deco creeping in around the edges[1], so I also appreciate your style! [2] 😊 [1] okay, so my dark teal green velvet sofa is maybe not just “creeping in around the edges”... but it’s very MCM-shaped - the MADE Scott sofa - so I think this fits across both of these styles! 😄 [2] Although I’m waging a constant battle to get rid of stuff gradually accumulated over the years that’s now taking up valuable space... not for lack of desire, but an excess of ADHD-related obstacles! The fight continues 💪🏻
What a great video! Thanks Daniel. I think he expressed himself very eloquently and gave me such a boots. I'm trying to start a new company doing interior design through the contacts I made over the years working in construction, but relying on one designer who's not very reliable. This video is like a breath of fresh air to me. I think with Daniel's help I can be comfortable with being a novice and start making moves on my own. Top guy!
I've always been into functionality but maybe to a fault. This outline makes sense out it for me how to achieve that balance for all the senses. I look like a minimalist in my apt but everything has it's own "out of sight" space. Thanks for the great videos. Your channel is so unique and I love it. Keep them coming.
I never like to compromise functionality, but if I don’t like the look of something very functional, I keep looking until I find something that marries both. Somewhere, someone will have done it. Generally, if something is both well designed and well built, it will have a beauty that makes that care visible. I don’t like to have much in the way of purely decorative items on display, so my functional items must be decorative in some way.
Thank you for the information. I am happy to use this to create a graphic design that I want to look at whenever I come home. I am a start up minimalist and I wanna convince myself to start minimizing all my item at home and my personal Lifestyle. Thanks Again
Your video is just in time for me to move into my first tiny apartment in the city, really looking forward to using your concepts. Let's see where this is going!
I find that minimalism in practice can be paradoxical because of the maximalist amount of thought, planning, effort, and struggle it takes to achieve it. You would think that because the space is minimal and there are less objects occupying it that it requires less effort, thought, and planning to achieve it, but quite the opposite is the case. Before one goes for a minimalist design I think you need to commit to that philosophy in other areas of your life to be able to maintain it. I just spent 9.5 hours today executing a plan that I had in place for over a year to reorganize my home office workspace. And I’m extremely happy with the result on a functional and aesthetic level but it nowhere comes close to how the designs are presented here. But to each their own. I look forward to watching more videos and learning more of the principles here and putting them into practice !
Daniel, you always make such sense in the videos. After watching I say to myself "duh, that should have been obvious!" which I think is because of your great skill in communicating nebulous concepts and feelings in a way which is both concise and understandable to the layman. Thank you!
There's almost a lot of 'Feng Shui' principles at play here when it comes to successful interior design. The balancing of Ying and Yang as you alluded to near the start of the video Basically having contrasting elements that are successfully balanced against each other and achieving a degree of unity & harmony in the space at the same time. Long established in the East FS became a bit of a fad in the West in the late 90s but actually its a very interesting concept to use in interior (& even exterior i.e. landscaping, garden etc) design in general as it taps into the psychology of how one perceives the appearance of their environment with all these principles at play.
Great video. Where did you get the floor standing globe light from?! Which brings me to another question - would you consider making a video with suggestions for places to shop for design looking/quality furniture, accesssories etc? The paradox of choice is real!
This helped me so much. I'm about to launch a channel focusing on French Country Design. You've inspired me by talking about basic tenants that apply to any style. I thank you a lot.
As usual awesome video 👏😊. I loved your curved TV unit 😍😍😍. I didn't realize that shapes could have a "gender", but it makes sense. Some great tips for making our living spaces more cohesive and beautiful.
Hi Daniel! I liked your wall of posters in my opinion this is an important part of the decor, it would be interesting to hear how you pick them up, where you buy them, how you arrange the composition. Thanks
Is your mum as minimalist as you. Did you grow up in a minimal style home? What about your wife? Another fantastic video. Always such high quality and great content!
After living with a mom who threw nothing out , this style is for me

Well said.
@@DanielTitchener hi good sir. I'm looking for ur collapsible yet height adjustable table. How much did u invest for it?
The outro music is the same tempo as his speech and it was so satisfying hearing particular words hit a bass and/or snare at the exact same time.
