Ugh, I wish that trend of random words on the wall would die die die. Like a sign in the garden that says "garden". Really? In case someone thinks it's a soccer field?
To me, home decor is like a painting, or any other form of art...you do what you love, you do what speaks to you, you do what makes you feel good. Trying to follow trends, or trying to copy a showroom is just stressful.

To answer the question someone asked about why people buy food or dessert scented candles ..it’s because a lot of our childhood memories are connected to moments related to food like where I come from it’s the way our families express love bonding in the kitchen- so when I smell certain scents it instantly makes me feel happy or cozy or gives me a sense of peace. People connect to things they are “familiar” with.
I met one of my sons old friends ( they went to school together for most of their school years) he’s now in his thirties. He was so sweet and said he loved coming round my house because it always smelt of fresh cakes baking or dinner cooking. I used to make celebration cakes 🎂🥰
Gosh, you would hate my house, I love it though! I love scented candles and lots of color. I fill my home with things I love and I don’t care if others don’t like it. The reason why so many people like Pottery Barn is that it feels cozy, unlike a lot of the homes now that look like hotel lobbies and all the rooms look the same.

It still amazes me how many people decorate their rooms in this tacky style (e.g. all lime green - curtains, bedding, vases - barfffff:-/

I have to make sure I take my allergy meds with me whenever we have an outing together. She knows I have this issue & unplugs the ones in the car but the fragrance is still there. In fact it permeates all my shopping bags by the time I get home. I've found the best thing for odors is to maintain a clean house & car. No fragrance necessary. I enjoyed watching your video. Agreed. However, many try to achieve a certain look and miss without realizing where they went wrong. Often times wasting money on expensive throw pillows or matching sofa & love seats. Understanding the basics of decorating can be really helpful. I will say, color blocking is still a popular way to accent a wall if you want to put a photo gallery in front. But it’s a bold look & will not create a soft, relaxing mood. It just depends on what you’re trying to create.
You hit on some things I never noticed, like arches, but the themed rooms, absolutely. When I see a sofa with a ton of pillows, I think, where the hell am I supposed to sit.
The pottery barn comment is so grounding to me. Thank you. I feel all my friends have that “perfect show room look” home and that may at times make me doubt my personal style
Don’t doubt yourself!!! It’s all personal preference but the “showroom look” is a little meh to me TBH. We can get inspired by them but they are NOT HOMES
@@ArvinOlano so true! Honestly, this was stressing me out a few weeks ago. Everyone on pinterst and youtube have these picture perfect houses and I always wanted my house to look so neat and perfect. I don't know how people do it. IT'S STRESSFUL! I showed pictures of my house to someone for opinions on how to improve it, and I felt like I do everything so wrong. I gave up, it's my house and I will put things how I like it :)
I've never seen your show before but I can honestly say you really pulled in off. You're not sitting there talking talking talking, or giggling with your spouse. Thank goodness you kept it moving. 💯🌟
Love the TIP about transitioning your colours like your eyeshadows. Definitely useful, that way your eyes will flow easy instead of grabbing patches of colour around your space❤️
As an interior design student, I love videos like these because I can learn from them but also agree with lotsss of them. And let me just say, that painted arch door left me speechless. Who told them that was okay? 😩
I’m glad you brought up the “clutter” issue. I was following “farm house” tours and was so overwhelmed with the clutter! It was way too overwhelming and made me anxious!
I do agree with this! When the cute farmhouse items came out, I liked it! Now all the 'tubers are just adding clutter and merchandising their homes! Must be so exhausting!
Oh gosh I loved that too... if I hear one more you tuber start a video with “omg I’ve had soooo many requests for this” I’m gonna rip my hair out! Like B, we know NOBODY asked you 😒🤣
@@MrsGetOverYourself exactly! I also don't appreciate some RUclipsrs trying to work in brand deals like it's just a friendly suggestion. Just say you have to pay the bills!
You are SO refreshing! Love your personality, knowledge, and straight-to-point info. So many interior designer you-tubers talk way too much and don't get to the point.
New here! Love the vibe. Does anyone else find themselves holding their breath with each new "don't do this," hoping that they're not committing the infraction themselves? Makes me a little nervous!
Right! After watching this I looked around and realized I had Rule of 3's all over my house subconsciously. Almost like when Rapunzel looked around and saw random subconscious suns all over her tower haha
Right, and if you must use more than three go with odd numbers, 3, 5, 7... unless it's two spaced groupings of 3. It's more pleasing to the eye than even numbers.
People are painting faux arches?! 😳 This was a great video Arvin and some excellent pointers. Let’s talk about down filling in those pillows instead of that cheap poly. I hate going to someone’s house that’s lovely until you look at the fairy pillows on the sofa. Great video you! ❤️
I was gonna say the same thing! I was watching a similar video from a different RUclipsr (who’s forte isn’t even interior design lol) and she just came off as mean spirited in her choice of words and tone. Totally turned me off!
I love how you have so much energy and great advice without being overly negative! I just subscribed and know I’m gonna start binging all the videos I’ve missed!
Omg TY for getting it!! This video is mainly about my opinions and my preferences and just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean that someone else shouldn’t like it either haha so ty for getting the point of the video
Thank you for all the great tips and examples, I have tried too hard for too many years to find the right decor for me. I finally decided that I love French cottage with a little whimsy, and your advice will definitely keep me grounded, cause I was raised that there are no empty spaces ! I love a clean well put together room, but hate all the "stuff" ! I will be taking it out honey!! Love your video!!
I've updated my home by painting and removing dated stuff like curtains and old rugs pillows etc. these small changes give my home a more sophisticated look Thank you🌹 for your tips ❤
Arvin! Would you be able to do a video where we send pictures of our home then you would give rate it or give us tips or advice or feedback on how we decorated our place? I think that’s kinda fun and interactive with your viewers.
Yes 💗 that would be so great! I can design a client space without a struggle, but my own home I tend to see one way, or the same type vision. I love other input from someone who's style I trust. I recently moved my fireplace from the exterior wall across the room to the 16' tall wall. It has ventless gas logs and was a exterior nightmare with roof line and gutters. Water constantly pooled by my door and seaped in under the wall😰 It has opened up a whole new world! Arvin I LOVE your style and people would even pay you to do this. Could even hold a class where people register to reserve a space. You can show before and after pictures of the spaces❤️
@@jazzabeller wall it up and give yourself an extra closet:) or even a pantry, if near the kitchen. Then you can put a nice mirror on that wall (but NOT a window one😜)
When our house was for sale, before the showing, I simmered some cinnamon and nutmeg and cloves in water on the stove for a few minutes. I also put a pie on a cooling rack next to the stove. We got an offer.....
Literally same! I love the smell of candles, but hate all those oil smells. Like the lavender, cedar wood...like I’m just not into it. Thank you for these great tips and reminders! I agree and disagree with Arvin's advice on home scents. Most of the year I pick a luxurious yet clean scent for my house, EXCEPT for the winter holidays because it makes decorating, cooking, and baking that much better.
Yes! My guest room is travel themed. A bit bohemian and a bit steam punk. It’s my favorite room in the house, haha. I mean, if we have the space, can’t we at least dedicate one “fun” room? 😜
OMG I LOVE YOUR personality and delivery!!!! I am about to update my current spaces and this is so helpful. Especially the eyeshadow comment, that makes so much sense to me.
Yeah, but the problem is when they really aren't decorating their space. They are taking their cues (much of the time) from something they've seen and tried to interpret, or taking a color and running with it. Then it looks like that color threw up all over the room. So, in theory, they really do care. You can tell when a person doesn't care. I respect a person that doesn't try. They just want function even if means putting a box in front of a sofa and calling it a coffee table.
Yep, look at these points if you aren’t happy with the room.... but, if you are, enjoy it. I hear his ideas and agree with them in principle as “rules” but I like an eclectic vibe in my house and my attractive clutter makes me feel happy in my rooms.
I love and agree with everything you covered! ❤ I stumbled upon your videos yesterday and I am now hooked. I viewed quite a few already. Okay so I have a dilemma: my husband and I have completely opposite tastes in EVERYTHING in life including decor and way of dressing. Well he always tells me that dark rooms are warm, intimate, cozy and romantic. I agree to some point but the darker the room the better and he won’t even be open to the idea of bringing in natural warm tones such as bamboo color, coppers and golds or terracotta, sage green…you know..all the colors that I think are warm. Well he calls all these cool colors. Anything light is sterile and cold he says. I’m about to paint the bedroom again and this time I’d like to paint it dark like he wants it because I’m tired of hearing it going on 5 years now. Can you please give us ideas on dark cozy bedrooms? What to do and what not to do? Thank you so much!!!❤
I switched out my “mirror window” in my dining room for a 37” circle one from Homegoods and it completely transformed my dining room! It looks so much more “grand” now! Definitely agree with all these tips!! ❤️
And on the flip side, I just put a “window” mirror over my entry table and it transformed my apartment. I didn’t want another round mirror (have one in my bedroom) and a large or ornate one wouldn’t have worked. I like it so anyone who doesn’t can just kiss it. 😜
Why did it take so long for your video to pop up in my recommended list!? I love your energy! Your explanation of everything is so helpful and I absolutely love your laugh!! 🥰
Really love the cameo appearances by your “special guest star”! 🐶💕 Word of caution with regards to Essential Oils, many of these can be toxic to dogs and cats and can even be deadly in some cases. Wow I have never been so happy to watch and influencer. You’re vibe and personality are everything. I’m obsessed with you and live for your videos! You have so much knowledge ! Love U!
I agree with so much of what you said, but if a home is overly perfect it just ends up looking like a store anyway, follow some rules but be sure to infuse personality, or you just have a really pretty but character devoid space🤷🏻♂️
My fave British designers Sophie Robinson and Kate Watson-Smythe (their podcast is The Great Indoors) say you should get the biggest rug you can afford and at least all the front legs of your furniture should be on the rug.
Yes that is one of the cardinal rules when selecting a rug, basic but essential designer knowledge that should be common knowledge but it is not so, yet.
I love the way you describe the feelings that pieces create...It makes so much sense to me, and I've never heard anyone use breathing space to describe things like clutter and archways the way you do! I love it!
Hi Arvin, love your videos. Question…. I am moving to an all white ultra modern apartment and need some advice on how display my 100+ beautifully boxed decks of Tarot cards. Each deck is a work of art but I’m not sure what kind of bookcase to display them in so they look like part of the modern but comfortable decor. Any suggestions as they are a large part of who I am and I don’t want to hide them away behind closed doors. I want to see, love and appreciate them. Thanks. Coreen

Honestly, every home should be decorated in a way that the people living there are most comfortable. Never let someone else dictate your joy.
Yep. 10 years ago They were telling people to cover their beds in pillows, never too many. So now the look They created is a "Don't do this!"
U can do that just don’t be surprised if it looks like a circus
@@Pikapikamarshmellow as long as your home makes YOU happy, that's all that matters!
He knows that
"Showroom is not a home" - this, this, THIS! Thank you!
You hit on some things I never noticed, like arches, but the themed rooms, absolutely. When I see a sofa with a ton of pillows, I think, where the hell am I supposed to sit.
I have that situation. My hubby and son uses it as daddy-son bonding over frisbee moment.
The pottery barn comment is so grounding to me. Thank you. I feel all my friends have that “perfect show room look” home and that may at times make me doubt my personal style
Don’t doubt yourself!!! It’s all personal preference but the “showroom look” is a little meh to me TBH. We can get inspired by them but they are NOT HOMES
hi, we can provide you sample of 48FT color changing outdoor string lights or led cabinet lights...contact us if you need it, thank you
That is not a place that can be lived in comfortably and is not realistic.
It makes me feel uncomfortable and I’m scared to touch anything in their home or even sit down haha
My favorite design trick ever haha
I ✨hate✨ “themed” rooms so I’m so glad you said it!
I'm genuinely shocked that I haven't done any of these on this list, I feel slightly better about my amateur interior design skills. Lol.
I’m a boho eclectic gal. I love texture and colors that blend well. But yes, I can’t stand clutter! So cozy to me!
As an interior design student, I love videos like these because I can learn from them but also agree with lotsss of them. And let me just say, that painted arch door left me speechless. Who told them that was okay? 😩
I think the title deed that has their name on it, instead of yours, may have given them the idea that it was okay...but I could be wrong.
@@LookinAtHim 😂😂😂
The same person who told them pallet art wall ok. WHAT THE F?
I’m glad you brought up the “clutter” issue. I was following “farm house” tours and was so overwhelmed with the clutter! It was way too overwhelming and made me anxious!
I do agree with this! When the cute farmhouse items came out, I liked it! Now all the 'tubers are just adding clutter and merchandising their homes! Must be so exhausting!
I agree that some places look more like they are hoarding or opening a store than decorating.
@@dawnmassey2797 It is so over....no more Jo Gaines....Puh-leeeez😩

Lol!! I thought it was just me!!! Fortunately, I wasn't guilty of any faux pas!! Lol!!
yesss i agree, stop putting decor in every inch of your house! it makes the space look messier/cluttered. LESS IS MORE.
OK?! I still follow the
"Coco Chanel " rule: before I leave the house I look in the mirror🪞& remove 1 accessory.
Oh no honey……. More is MORE 🥂🍾
My grandson told me one day “ mawmaw your house looks like a store”, I changed it!! One of your best videos!! Good tips!!
Well done! I’m simmering Lemon, Rosemary, Peppercorns & Vanilla at the moment and my home smells amazing! Doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated.
Loved this video, I kept looking around my family room going "whew". One thing I disagree with is I'm never giving up my Bath & Body Works candles!
I think I live under a rock, I haven’t seen these painted Arched doorways
(most of us haven't. Someone here said; "I think some bored-out-of-her-mind-mom came up with this.")
I’ve always loved the rule of 3’s. It’s always a good idea.
Right! After watching this I looked around and realized I had Rule of 3's all over my house subconsciously. Almost like when Rapunzel looked around and saw random subconscious suns all over her tower haha
3 and generally, working with odd numbers is the golden rule
Right, and if you must use more than three go with odd numbers, 3, 5, 7... unless it's two spaced groupings of 3. It's more pleasing to the eye than even numbers.
People are painting faux arches?! 😳 This was a great video Arvin and some excellent pointers. Let’s talk about down filling in those pillows instead of that cheap poly. I hate going to someone’s house that’s lovely until you look at the fairy pillows on the sofa. Great video you! ❤️
Only Arvin can shade decorating choices and still not offend anyone. A gift of a great personality.
I was gonna say the same thing! I was watching a similar video from a different RUclipsr (who’s forte isn’t even interior design lol) and she just came off as mean spirited in her choice of words and tone. Totally turned me off!
I’m so glad you get it!!!!! I think people sometimes forget I’m just sharing my thoughts and opinions. It’s ok if you disagree with me 🥲🤍
@@ArvinOlano you are awesome. I wish you continued success!

Oh good yes...
I've updated my home by painting and removing dated stuff like curtains and old rugs pillows etc. these small changes give my home a more sophisticated look
Thank you🌹 for your tips ❤
Arvin! Would you be able to do a video where we send pictures of our home then you would give rate it or give us tips or advice or feedback on how we decorated our place? I think that’s kinda fun and interactive with your viewers.
Ive been meaning to do a video like that!!!
Yes! I’m still stuck on what to do with the space below my stairs.
Water constantly pooled by my door and seaped in under the wall😰
It has opened up a whole new world!
Omgoodness thus would wonderful. I would love to send in a picture and you give recommendations and I would pay for that advice. Seriously.
Lol. I agree with a lot of these, but I'm still keeping my "baked goods" candles though. I love my house smelling like a bakery. 😋
When our house was for sale, before the showing, I simmered some cinnamon and nutmeg and cloves in water on the stove for a few minutes. I also put a pie on a cooling rack next to the stove. We got an offer.....
He started the video with, "nobody asked" I literally died and instantly fell in love! 🤣🤣🤣♥️♥️♥️
You lost me with the candles it’s my home it will smell the way I prefer LOL
Personally, dessert scented candles make me think of a model home.
I use the IHop rule; no candles that smell sticky sweet, like an IHop restaurant!!
Literally same! I love the smell of candles, but hate all those oil smells. Like the lavender, cedar wood...like I’m just not into it.
And I must say, I have 3 metal wax warmers in my house with Walmart’s Scentsationals brand wax cubes and literally EVERYONEEEE that comes inside always says how nice our house always smells. So 👌🏼
Scented candles are filled with carcinogens
Your comedic timing is so perfect. I'm literally bursting out with belly laughter!

Look out.... Arvin is comin’ for EVERYBODY!
Decorate your home whichever way it makes you happy! That’s all that matters.
Absolutely 👌🏼
Love this!
Exactly 😅

I agree with so much of what you said, but if a home is overly perfect it just ends up looking like a store anyway, follow some rules but be sure to infuse personality, or you just have a really pretty but character devoid space🤷🏻♂️
Yes exactly! I mean I love things looking good but when it’s too perfect does anyone even live there 😭 I love HOMES not showrooms
.I am thinking the same...imperfection is just js nice 😁😁
My fave British designers Sophie Robinson and Kate Watson-Smythe (their podcast is The Great Indoors) say you should get the biggest rug you can afford and at least all the front legs of your furniture should be on the rug.
Just learning about this rug rule but I love it, makes total sense!
Yes that is one of the cardinal rules when selecting a rug, basic but essential designer knowledge that should be common knowledge but it is not so, yet.
