Ugh, I wish that trend of random words on the wall would die die die. Like a sign in the garden that says "garden". Really? In case someone thinks it's a soccer field?
"Live Love Laugh" in scroll stencil in every open house master bedroom I've been to. Then you find out they're selling because of a divorce.
PAHAHA 😂 I do totally agree!!! I love you to the moon and back 🤮really in the milky way that's all the love you can muster up!! Oh I'm so sick of it.
It will after that Saturday night live sketch.
I never understood why all those word signs were considered art or even desirable decor.
Along with Rae Dunn everything. I don't need my mug reminding me it's a mug with the word, "drink," "tea", or "coffee" on it...
you can pry my scented candles out of my cold, dead hands.
Mine as well
I’m not even there in the video yet but Im like...ohhhh heallllyyynooooo
Tell him again Girl🤣😂🤣😍
Noooooo, bury them with me, without the lids so that my new neighbors can enjoy them too 😂
Favorite comment!
The eyeshadow analogy was soooo good!!! Total light bulb moment on how to play w/ color, which has always been a challenge for me.
To me, home decor is like a painting, or any other form of art...you do what you love, you do what speaks to you, you do what makes you feel good. Trying to follow trends, or trying to copy a showroom is just stressful.
Also you decorate your home to reflect your likes. Why tend that's being stuck in a home that's not you/ yours
Yes!
I like minimal but i love colours.
Exactly
The decor reflects the resident(s), not their visitors.
I love how you start every video “no body asked..” it’s so humble because most you tubers say “so many of you keep asking” love your stuff!!!
Yes I love that!
"so many of you requested" one person. One person asked. 😂
Rii lol

Totally! I have 4 dogs, 4 cats, & 3 vacuum cleaners! Lol
@@bludaizee24 6 cats 2 dogs. 2 vacuum cleaners and a steam cleaner. lol
Gosh, you would hate my house, I love it though! I love scented candles and lots of color. I fill my home with things I love and I don’t care if others don’t like it. The reason why so many people like Pottery Barn is that it feels cozy, unlike a lot of the homes now that look like hotel lobbies and all the rooms look the same.
You have to do what makes YOU & your family happy.....what you feel makes your home a home. All these "don't do these things" videos are silly....while they attempt to guide people into creating a great home from a design standpoint it isn't advice for everyone bc your home is such a personal thing and everyone is free to make theirs exactly how they want it to be. Some of these tips are true but at the end of the day YOU have to live in your home and our you own stamp on it based on what YOU find appealing not what anyone else thinks even so-called design experts.
He didn't actually say that either. I like the guide omg stopped me buying the kitche bed w diamanté realised hmmmm no ! Thank god I'd be stuck fr years I am just looking at bedding and a headboard now w throws ill figure it finding my look but y no diamanté gatherd headboard and huge ! Yep no
Honestly one of the best "Things you should stop doing" videos. Absolutely love this, especially the comparison of blending eyeshadow colors to blending colors in your home. I got a lot of grief about mixing colors from golds/blacks/chrome but I knew what I was doing would look gorgeous and thoughtful all said and done.
I liked that, too, but the room that was the “yes” seemed dark to me. I loved the room, but I couldn’t do a room that dark.
Agree!
This is the first I’ve come across you! Love it!! Thank you!
Ok so the eyeshadow metaphor is THE BEST way I’ve heard anyone explain why matchy-matchy isn’t ideal!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Yes but think it further, you wouldn't want the carpet and the throw pillows be the exact same color of purple. Like you would not put on pink wyesahdpw and use the exact same tone of pink for your lipstick... You always ned colors that complement each other and can even be in the same color palette but just not the same
I suffer from Matchy-Matchy Síndrome 😅 except on makeup actually 😆
Yeah but unless it's the early 2000s, slapping just one eyeshadow is good to go.
Made soooo much sense.
If you put purple eye shadow do yo put purple lipstick and purple cheeks and matching earrings ? That’s the concept do not do that with your decorations make things blend
This is my first time watching your videos and you seem like the Edna Mode of interior design.
ILL TAKE IT
Mine too!
Lmaoooo I enjoyed this! Yassss lmao
🤣😂🤣
Absolutely! I'm new here too and I was just thinking "no capes!" when I read your comment.
My favorite Edna Mode quote is when Elastigirl says "what on earth do you think the baby will be doing?"
EM- "Well I don't know darling but luck favors the prepared."
I had to chuckle when you said ‘You’re probably a regular person, like me’. Arvin, you are so extra! And I mean that in the best possible way. I so enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work.
the mirrors that look like windows 😭😭😂 alvin be roasting tf out of suburban culture and it’s HILARIOUS
your little laughs after your tips are so passive aggressive I love it
Would you consider asking your subs to send you pics of rooms and you can critique them?
Great idea!
Love this
Just not their rooms.
Great idea
I love the idea!!!
Thank you for all the great tips and examples, I have tried too hard for too many years to find the right decor for me. I finally decided that I love French cottage with a little whimsy, and your advice will definitely keep me grounded, cause I was raised that there are no empty spaces ! I love a clean well put together room, but hate all the "stuff" ! I will be taking it out honey!! Love your video!!
Omg!! I’m ready to become an adult! A classy rich auntie adult !! I’m that girl who loves color. Matching drapes with the pillows & rug is a must. Ha!! But a neutral sofa & decor 😍 thank you for helping me realize I’m not that girl anymore 😌
Right? I remember the 80’s, and everyone had that “country” look-ducks or teddy bears. On drapes, furniture, pillows, etc…yuck. I swore I’d never do that. But I don’t have a particular….style. I see something *I* like, I put it out. But much of my furniture is secondhand, thrifted, or an antique piece I love, so, no actual cohesive style. 😢
i love how you just go straight to the point, and not taking up 3 minutes for the intro ! Subscribed!
yay!!!!
@@ArvinOlano Me too. You are just too much fun, and also elegant.
Exactly. Love his videos
@@ArvinOlano! Proud Filipino here. I love your interior designs. Just started watching you last week.
I really need help decorating my living room decorated half away now my brain is not working do you think you can help me
The moment you said "stop paining accent arches" my reaction was "Wtf is an accent arch... OMG WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?!"
Is it not the weirdest thing you've ever seen?🤣🤣
Same. That green door will from now on hunt my nightmares.
Same. And now I want one.
SAME!!!
I know right!!! What is wrong with people!
Honestly, every home should be decorated in a way that the people living there are most comfortable. Never let someone else dictate your joy.
Yep. 10 years ago They were telling people to cover their beds in pillows, never too many. So now the look They created is a "Don't do this!"
U can do that just don’t be surprised if it looks like a circus
Agreed. However, many try to achieve a certain look and miss without realizing where they went wrong. Often times wasting money on expensive throw pillows or matching sofa & love seats. Understanding the basics of decorating can be really helpful. I will say, color blocking is still a popular way to accent a wall if you want to put a photo gallery in front. But it’s a bold look & will not create a soft, relaxing mood. It just depends on what you’re trying to create.
@@Pikapikamarshmellow as long as your home makes YOU happy, that's all that matters!
He knows that
I love all your decorating wisdom. I’m trying out Feng Shui and also watching this channel, and am delaying buying key items until I find the ones I love. I really want Cedar or Burl, or Redwood night-stand or night-tables. I like that you are pushing simplicity combined with authenticity (such as real crafted pieces vs fake)
The eyeshadow analogy is so on point!
Yassss easiest way to understand color for our homes 😍
I agree that was probably the most helpful comment out of the hundredths of videos I have seen to help me figure out how to use color in my home. Thank you Arvin !
Yes!
This analogy brings it home so beautifully 😍
I love the analogy but I'm totally that bitch that slaps one color on her lids and calls it a day. LMAO! 😂
I started this with “hmm not a fan of the do this/don’t do that vids”. By the end I was “Omg this is so spot on!”
The “what not to do” is my favourite way to start! Eliminate the don’ts and go from there 😅
Only watched it because of your comment! Thanks very helpful video I agreed with everything and most I don’t do!
I was the same way then I was like oh wow this actually makes sense.
Ahhh, I was exactly the same way! I cringed a bit as soon as I saw the video title. Bit after about 2 minutes, I was like:"This guy knows what he's talking about!". I agree with pretty much everything he said.
Especially a colour theme for a room. It still amazes me how many people decorate their rooms in this tacky style (e.g. all lime green - curtains, bedding, vases - barfffff:-/
Like the 3's rule. Different heights, space between.
Amazing! Feel like I just completed an interior decorating class. Thank you, for the candle commentary. Finally! So glad someone finally stated the obvious!
I'm not trying to smell like a bakery, but I love the ambience of a candle and I use them liberally
I’m really glad you talked about rugs, I bought an 8x10 at an auction and I was thinking it might be too big but once the new furniture is on it it’s going to be perfect
To answer the question someone asked about why people buy food or dessert scented candles ..it’s because a lot of our childhood memories are connected to moments related to food like where I come from it’s the way our families express love bonding in the kitchen- so when I smell certain scents it instantly makes me feel happy or cozy or gives me a sense of peace. People connect to things they are “familiar” with.
I can not stand the smell of food dessert candles...I'm more of a lavender linen scent
I met one of my sons old friends ( they went to school together for most of their school years) he’s now in his thirties. He was so sweet and said he loved coming round my house because it always smelt of fresh cakes baking or dinner cooking. I used to make celebration cakes 🎂🥰
@@lindarobinson1610 awe that’s sweet
That's why people never loose wt, food is the last thing that should occupy ones mind.
@@vivetkah and spending money on decor should? ..I think people should think about whatever makes them happy. How about that?
Those accent arches remind me of the fake tunnel from the roadrunner cartoon 🤣
OMFG I know exactly what you’re talking about lollll
😂😂😂😂😂
So true🤣🤣
Sadly, several coyotes - across the country - have already been injured as a result of running into those "arches" at high speed...😔

The painted arch over the door just looks like some drunk attempted painting the wall then quit 😂
This is the best analogy 😂
I did it in my biz. 😂
Am I the only one who love how Arvin speak, the connotation, stress, tone, etc. I'm not only interested in home tips but as well as practicing my English, like Arvin's way of talking is so chic and elegant and professional.
I couldn't care less about the tips, he's just fun!
if anyone coming to my home is judging my decor, they don't belong in my home. IMHO
No, I think that today I'm going to just watch several of his videos and let him talk and de-stress me.
Love his intonation, facial expression & laughs...

You and Nick are my favourite RUclipsrs. I am grateful for your thoughts and advice. I am a new home owner and have come to design as a hobby and I love learning from you. You are so natural and a joy to watch. Hope you keep it up. I love your humour.
Your the bomb girl?! I am upgrading our living room to a more elegant and less cluttered! I basically emptied our living room so I can start with a blank canvas. Done lots or research and inspiration. But You definitely gave me a more thorough ideas on how Im gonna design our space!!😍

The pottery barn comment is so grounding to me. Thank you. I feel all my friends have that “perfect show room look” home and that may at times make me doubt my personal style
Don’t doubt yourself!!! It’s all personal preference but the “showroom look” is a little meh to me TBH. We can get inspired by them but they are NOT HOMES

That is not a place that can be lived in comfortably and is not realistic.
It makes me feel uncomfortable and I’m scared to touch anything in their home or even sit down haha
@@ArvinOlano so true! Honestly, this was stressing me out a few weeks ago. Everyone on pinterst and youtube have these picture perfect houses and I always wanted my house to look so neat and perfect. I don't know how people do it. IT'S STRESSFUL! I showed pictures of my house to someone for opinions on how to improve it, and I felt like I do everything so wrong. I gave up, it's my house and I will put things how I like it :)
I’m a boho eclectic gal. I love texture and colors that blend well. But yes, I can’t stand clutter! So cozy to me!
I love and agree with everything you covered! ❤ I stumbled upon your videos yesterday and I am now hooked. I viewed quite a few already. Okay so I have a dilemma: my husband and I have completely opposite tastes in EVERYTHING in life including decor and way of dressing. Well he always tells me that dark rooms are warm, intimate, cozy and romantic. I agree to some point but the darker the room the better and he won’t even be open to the idea of bringing in natural warm tones such as bamboo color, coppers and golds or terracotta, sage green…you know..all the colors that I think are warm. Well he calls all these cool colors. Anything light is sterile and cold he says. I’m about to paint the bedroom again and this time I’d like to paint it dark like he wants it because I’m tired of hearing it going on 5 years now. Can you please give us ideas on dark cozy bedrooms? What to do and what not to do? Thank you so much!!!❤
Ummm I LOVE LOVE LOVE walking into someone’s house and it smells like they just baked 10 pies. Feels so warm and welcoming ☺️
It’s so warm and welcome but I can’t do it at home, I wouldn’t stop eating 😅
Same 😁
Fresh ground coffee!
@@catonamushroom1019 that sounds great ☕️😊
Agreed if it's 10 real pies in the oven. But 10 chemical induced "pies" from Bath & Body Works, nahhh.
“Nobody asked, but I gotcha Queen.” Arvin’s commentary feels like a warm embrace. This is the best “Stop Doing This” out there! 🥰
Exactly! Especially because influencers are often saying “everyone’s been asking me” when you know it’s not true. I love the honesty 😁
Haha i subscribed the moment he said that haha 😂
Thank you! You are making home decoration fun and removing the mystery. I just love the way you laugh! we all need to do more of that.
LOVE your stop/don't do videos even more that the others! SO enlightening and guiding. Thanks a ton.
Reminder this is his constructive criticism, do what you want in your home 💖
Hahahah... I'm agree with u bro.
Every people have their own " taste".
This guy talk about his personal taste as well.
Agree
As long as it's always spots on n cleans
I’ve always disliked when someone says a room has a “theme”. A child’s birthday party has a theme, but your living room doesn’t need one. We use design styles to create an environment, ambience or atmosphere. Not a theme.
I agree with you and Arvin. The theme should simply be "I LIVE here."
Righttt
I will allow one (1) half bathroom in a home to be nautically themed just because white women like my mom need a room to throw all of their Tommy Bahama energy into.
Agreed! Scrap the idea of arches in every wall to create a scalloped room, and throw out the fisherman's netting, the sea shells, mermaid scale pillows and indoor mini palms..... maybe keep the singing bass fish, because that's just classy! Lol
Okay! Preach, I always thought it looks kitschy or child like.
OMG I LOVE YOUR personality and delivery!!!! I am about to update my current spaces and this is so helpful. Especially the eyeshadow comment, that makes so much sense to me.
Great video, Arvin! Very inspirational. I'm decorating my new apartment in KL now and your videos (and Nick Lewis) help me a lot with practical ideas.
I'm genuinely shocked that I haven't done any of these on this list, I feel slightly better about my amateur interior design skills. Lol.
At the end of the day, if you love it, that’s all that matters. 🤷🏻♂️
Facts 👏🏼
Yes, best advice ever!
Thank you for this. Most of the time what is “in style” does not appeal to me.
@@Aimee-Gates I often start like what is in when it's going out. The whole time it is in I can't stand it.
I am so on board with your thoughts on artificial scents. I have a friend who should own stock in Yankee Candle in that she buys so much product from them. I am very fragrance sensitive which makes it so difficult to visit her home. I try visiting only on nice days so we can sit outside. When you ride in her car she uses those clip on air fresheners. I have to make sure I take my allergy meds with me whenever we have an outing together. She knows I have this issue & unplugs the ones in the car but the fragrance is still there. In fact it permeates all my shopping bags by the time I get home. I've found the best thing for odors is to maintain a clean house & car. No fragrance necessary. I enjoyed watching your video. Thanks!
Well done! I’m simmering Lemon, Rosemary, Peppercorns & Vanilla at the moment and my home smells amazing! Doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated.
Omg I am so with you and you're spot on. Those awkward candle scents, rugs and floating furnitures, window mirrors, unnecessary cushions and those empty minimalist house decors.....lol. I'm not alone 🤗
"Showroom is not a home" - this, this, THIS! Thank you!
Love the TIP about transitioning your colours like your eyeshadows. Definitely useful, that way your eyes will flow easy instead of grabbing patches of colour around your space❤️
My favorite design trick ever haha
1 video and I'm officially obsessed--love how you talk about the elements and when/where to use them. Also loved the eyeshadow comparison, Brava!
I just found you while looking for rearranging room videos, and gosh thank God I found you. I would love to step up on my home decor and learn ways to make it look "luxurious and effortless". Any tips for a balck, grey and white theme?
I’ve never seen those painted arches before. What the? A very strange look.
I think that they look best over dressers or beds
Yeah, me neither. Except for once in a gardening show I saw three identical arches on a wall in the garden. That looked pretty good, and the garden had a south Asian vibe, too.
I was thinking the same! God forbid there’s a massive power outage...you will end up splat on that fake mirage of a door.
What the artist isn't Wile E Coyote? So you can walk right through the arch🤣
Never saw arches either - thank God
You hit on some things I never noticed, like arches, but the themed rooms, absolutely. When I see a sofa with a ton of pillows, I think, where the hell am I supposed to sit.
I have that situation. My hubby and son uses it as daddy-son bonding over frisbee moment.
Currently renovating my father-in-law’s house that we’re moving into soon and I stumbled upon this awesome video. So in love with the tips and everything! (Liked✅, subscribed✅, bell button🔔✅) Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to more videos and awesome tips 🥰
Currently in the process of redesigning my bedroom and my general living area. Your videos are giving me a lot of insight. Thanks Arvin!
yesss i agree, stop putting decor in every inch of your house! it makes the space look messier/cluttered. LESS IS MORE.
OK?! I still follow the
"Coco Chanel " rule: before I leave the house I look in the mirror🪞& remove 1 accessory.
I ✨hate✨ “themed” rooms so I’m so glad you said it!
Thank you for the blending colors tip! I'm not good at interior design so that helps a lot. I don't like to over match but wasn't sure how to avoid it.
I ordered and received the candle and Oil and OMG all in ONE Day!!! LOVE IT! ….. They smell amazing. Love your videos and thanks for all the great advise.
I love how you start “nobody asked but...” but it’s always the advice we didn’t know we needed ☺️ so thank you always!!

Oh gosh I loved that too... if I hear one more you tuber start a video with “omg I’ve had soooo many requests for this” I’m gonna rip my hair out! Like B, we know NOBODY asked you 😒🤣
@@MrsGetOverYourself exactly! I also don't appreciate some RUclipsrs trying to work in brand deals like it's just a friendly suggestion. Just say you have to pay the bills!
Lol. I agree with a lot of these, but I'm still keeping my "baked goods" candles though. I love my house smelling like a bakery. 😋
When our house was for sale, before the showing, I simmered some cinnamon and nutmeg and cloves in water on the stove for a few minutes. I also put a pie on a cooling rack next to the stove. We got an offer.....
I can’t afford being elegant at home but I like how fancy you are in your videos. It’s very easy to understand and very direct to the point ☺️
We’re currently staging our home to show and sell. These ideas are great! Thanks. Sharing by the way.
I’ll never give up Yankee candle “Christmas cookie” during the holiday while decorating, wrapping presents etc etc... I’m sorry I just can’t do it!!! lolol

I’m with you! Yankee candle forever
What’s wrong with apple pie 🥧 scent. Home is sweeter and cozier with such scents. I think it’s personal choice.
Thank you for these great tips and reminders! I agree and disagree with Arvin's advice on home scents. Most of the year I pick a luxurious yet clean scent for my house, EXCEPT for the winter holidays because it makes decorating, cooking, and baking that much better.

As an interior design student, I love videos like these because I can learn from them but also agree with lotsss of them. And let me just say, that painted arch door left me speechless. Who told them that was okay? 😩
I think the title deed that has their name on it, instead of yours, may have given them the idea that it was okay...but I could be wrong.

I don't know how I stumbled across this video....but I love it. I just moved into an old house that came with a LOT of western themed things. I am on a budget, but I am determined to update and modernize this place asap.
You are SO refreshing! Love your personality, knowledge, and straight-to-point info. So many interior designer you-tubers talk way too much and don't get to the point.
The only one I disagree on is the candles. I don’t want my house to smell like a botanical garden, I want my house to smell like I just baked a cake. Also, candles give such a warm atmosphere that a diffuser could never. This is a hill I will die on and then you can bury me with my vanilla candles.
Me too!!! I need it to smell like baked goods during the fall at all times 🤣🤣🤣
Without candles😬sorry can’t do, I love my candles😉. Fake arches first time for me 🤔.
My favorite scent is warm apple pie for candles and wax. I regret wasting my money on two diffusers. It just doesn't give off the same scent and I started having headaches an hour after I turn it on. Ever since I quit using diffusers, I stopped having headaches.
Just get the high quality candles. The bad ones are AWFUL. (I agree; not a fan of diffusers).
😂I just commented on the scented candles, as well! I agree w you!
Loved this video, I kept looking around my family room going "whew". One thing I disagree with is I'm never giving up my Bath & Body Works candles!
Sooo happy I found you!!! Definitely you are gonna be my home decor guru. You rug size was exactly what felt wrong in my living room

I’ve always loved the rule of 3’s. It’s always a good idea.
Right! After watching this I looked around and realized I had Rule of 3's all over my house subconsciously. Almost like when Rapunzel looked around and saw random subconscious suns all over her tower haha
3 and generally, working with odd numbers is the golden rule
Right, and if you must use more than three go with odd numbers, 3, 5, 7... unless it's two spaced groupings of 3. It's more pleasing to the eye than even numbers.

I am dead at the picture of Z Gallerie with the store closing signs in the windows LOL
SAME!
I switched out my “mirror window” in my dining room for a 37” circle one from Homegoods and it completely transformed my dining room! It looks so much more “grand” now! Definitely agree with all these tips!! ❤️
You get it 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 come through modern
And on the flip side, I just put a “window” mirror over my entry table and it transformed my apartment. I didn’t want another round mirror (have one in my bedroom) and a large or ornate one wouldn’t have worked. I like it so anyone who doesn’t can just kiss it. 😜
Thank you so much! I am sooooo happy that I watched the entire video, YAY! I am doing all things right. I totally agree with you in every way! You are awesome! I will continue to follow you, because you are the BOMB!!!
You lost me with the candles it’s my home it will smell the way I prefer LOL
Personally, dessert scented candles make me think of a model home.
I use the IHop rule; no candles that smell sticky sweet, like an IHop restaurant!!
Literally same! I love the smell of candles, but hate all those oil smells. Like the lavender, cedar wood...like I’m just not into it.
And I must say, I have 3 metal wax warmers in my house with Walmart’s Scentsationals brand wax cubes and literally EVERYONEEEE that comes inside always says how nice our house always smells. So 👌🏼
Scented candles are filled with carcinogens
“Who are you trying to fool” 😂😂😂💖💖💖
You ain’t fooling me 😂🤍🤍🤍
@@ArvinOlano 😍 Lol!! You’re the best ✨
So on point! 👌 Everything you mentioned are things I notice people do & it drives me crazy! Thank you !
People are painting faux arches?! 😳 This was a great video Arvin and some excellent pointers. Let’s talk about down filling in those pillows instead of that cheap poly. I hate going to someone’s house that’s lovely until you look at the fairy pillows on the sofa. Great video you! ❤️
New here! Love the vibe. Does anyone else find themselves holding their breath with each new "don't do this," hoping that they're not committing the infraction themselves? Makes me a little nervous!
Lol!! I thought it was just me!!! Fortunately, I wasn't guilty of any faux pas!! Lol!!
I’m guilty of having a themed guest room. My bucket list is going to a safari. If I can’t go, let it come to me. Love it!
Yes! My guest room is travel themed. A bit bohemian and a bit steam punk. It’s my favorite room in the house, haha. I mean, if we have the space, can’t we at least dedicate one “fun” room? 😜
I had a beach-themed room as a kid and I freaking loved it
