Love you, Nick [and a subscriber], but Arvin is right on this. Get the best blackout blinds and/or curtains you can afford. This makes so much sense *especially* these days when for many people bedrooms are having to double up as 'office' space for people working from home.
After I divorced I made a very dark bedroom, to cocoon and heal. And now I'm watching you to learn how I can bring back the light. And I'm loving it 😍 can't wait to paint 🎨
Advice on bedding from a textile technologist. Always check the fibre content. Thread count means fuck all if it is a polyester or polyamide. Yeah you can get 800 thread count polyester sheets for way less than 400 thread count 100% cotton sheets but you are you going to sweat swimming pools. Thread count is the density of yarns per inch or per cm of fabirc. The higher the thread count, the longer the fibres, the finer the yarns, the softer it feels. Polyester absorbs less than 1% of its weight in water, polyamide will absorb around 3%, linen absorbs around 20%, cotton around 25%, wool and silk absorb around 30% of it weight. If a fibre absorbs more water, it's going to be able to absorb your sweat, remove it from your body so you don't overheat. Satin is a fabric construction, it is a type of weave and can be made from literally any fibre. The structure of the satin/sateen fabric helps aid the shiny appearance. Jersey is also a fabric construction, it is a type of knit and can be made from most fibres except probably kevlar, and carbon cause they don't like to be bent. I personally go for cotton or linen (cellulose 1) or regenerated cellulose such as viscose(UK/EU)/Rayon(US), lycoell, tencel, or modal (cellulose 2). If you are doing cotton but are hesistant on its sustainability, the best cotton you can get will have a Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) tag. This will increase the price but it has the best practices globally. Egyptian cotton is more expensive because the fibres are naturally longer than other cottons and they produce finer yarns = higher thread count and softer feel.
This is my favourite kind of comment, apart from those wildly hilarious people who sometimes comment. Full of practical and technical information I can actually *understand*. Thanks!
Thanks for the great advice. I need new sheets for summer here in New Zealand and getting myself all confused and worked up about thread counts. This is super helpful!
Thank God. Someone who knows what they are talking about.Linen is my first choice except that sometimes it can actually smell quite earthy/ fruity if you have a keen sense of smell as I do. Fitted sheets also tend be large than necessary too.

Finally! Someone else who loves Target's sheets! Bought ours 5 years ago because we had a new bed and I just needed something to use until I could find something "nicer". Five years later we're still using & loving them and I haven't found anything I liked better with a reasonable price tag.
So funny to happen upon this comment. We just bought some filler Target percale sheets because we got a king bed and had nothing else, but actually love them!
I love dark walls in the bedroom. Done well could be so nice. Bed frames could be tasteful in any style depends on the style of house, ceiling height, light. There are a lot of very tacky modern bed frames too. Not everything has to be linen, just because it’s trendy at the moment. Silk pillow cases ( not a cheap shiny ones) feel so good on your skin.
"Desert Modern" is technically what "Boho" is inspired by. The Bohemian life style is all about world travel, art, music, different textures, and items that mean something to you. Macrame is actually more vintage inspired than Boho, but the two seem to have merged somewhere along the way. I have a lot of 60's and 70's inspired things in my space which is why my macrame feels more authentic to its cause. Hell, I have a LAVA LAMP in my bedroom, so the macrame is spot on. It's not for everyone and I have a feeling mine will stick with me long after everyone else has donated theirs to the Goodwill.😆
Yessss...agreed..im not changing a thing when it comes to boho but will include some of this "desert whatever " style..calling the boho style immature was a bit much..its more of an experience of lifestyle, sacred..ugh
Macrame actually stems from Middle-Eastern culture, so the "desert modern" vibe that Boho is going for actually makes sense. Macrame might be vintage to people who grew up during the 70s era and treat it as a "trend", but to us Arabians, Macrame is timeless and an important part of our history.
That's exactly what I'm saying. It feels the same to me. Both are beautiful. He's worried about boho being too Over done... desert modern isn't far behind. Off to ikea for both looks lol
YES YES YESSS!! Boho has taken on a life of its own so much that isn't even boho anymore. Boho & farmhouse & beachy can be stunning if they're done well, but the single-style campy themes are NOT doing it for me.
I just did my bedroom in boho, and I absolutely love it!!! I was already a plant Mom soo the transition was very easy. With the white, cream, beige and terrocotta hues are very soothing for me.
I just painted my bedroom a dark navy blue a few months ago but I love it! All my bedding, curtains and furniture are light to balance it out. I could see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but you won't know if you'll like it if you don't try it. Fortunately paint is relatively cheap.

Holy Desert Modern!! Thank you Arvin, for solving my dilemma on which way to go on my blank- slate bedroom. LOVE IT for so many reasons...minimal, fresh & clean, but with terra-cotta hotness and my favorite pop of black contrast thrown in, too. I just squeeled and the cat jumped!
Here's something I learned when I was fully 40 years old and have stuck to ever since. If you are lucky enough to have a bedroom that only guests will sleep in, don't buy a bed with a 'footer' for it. You can still have an elaborate/ornate headboard if that's your thing, but some of us need a few extra inches at the end of the bed without having to bend our knees to avoid our feet touching a hard surface. I am a female of 5ft 9, btw, and there have been times when I have departed from a perfect mattress [on an otherwise lovely bed with a footboard] and slept on a pile of cushions or a fold-out bed just so I can sleep with my legs out straight. I will make a wild guess that a lot of men will agree with me.
As a petite person, even I deal with this. I also hate having my feet or calves hanging off the bed when laying diagonally or across, so I always add a nice long ottoman at the end of all my beds. 1. They double as storage. 2. They offer a place to set down your purse, lay out your jammies, set aside extra pillows, or to throw off the duvet when it gets too hot (better than ending up on the floor). 2. They also provide a seating area to put on socks or to just plain sit somewhere while talking/scrolling on the phone.
I actually just recently remodeled my room. I did a shiplap feature wall with black. While the rest is a warm beige. Replaced my carpet with warm brown hard wood floors. All accent colors are all warm earthy tones. Most definitely a warm inviting space ✨
This couldn’t have gone at a more perfect time. I was literally just standing in the middle of my very confused main bedroom wondering “What the hell am I even doing in here?” 😂
To the hanging cords...YES! It is so easy to cut a hole right behind where the tv will hang. Then cut a hole down next to the plug in. My husband and I did this. We went to Home Depot and got a couple of the outlet plates that have the rectangular holes to give it a finished look, even though the top hole is covered by the TV and the bottom hole is covered by the console table. It looks so good! No stray nose hairs for us!
Desert Modern looks great. My personal style is Desert Southwest since I grew up in New Mexico. FYI I do have a relatively dark paint in my bedroom with heavy furniture. Very masculine, but softened with Pueblo pottery. Love your channel.
I can see so many creative new directions boho can choose when it's finally up against the inevitable fork-in-the-road of adulthood: desert modern is good, but it could also seamlessly mature into Japandi or Wabi Sabi or Balinese vernacular.
AGREED. As a teen I loved boho. I loved how it looked so whimsical and artistic, all while being cozy at the same time. But now my style is definitely more japandi/ wabi sabi. The core of neutrals still remain, I guess it just matured. Those gaudy, mass-produced boho prints have got to go, but what I still love are the warm neutral colours like terracotta, olive, cream, etc which are even relevant in Arvin’s personal style. Even traditionally boho decor like macrame and prints can be done in good taste, when hand-woven by true artists; it’s the mass-production that ruins the authenticity of it all, which is probably what Arvin dislikes in it. And that casual, forest-y, “untouched” look of boho greenery (hanging above the bed, in odd corners, etc) is just a nightmare to maintain in an actual bedroom 😂
OH MY GOD GIRL, CABLE MANAGEMENT CAN MAKE OR BREAK A WHOLE ROOM. I'm currently in the middle of revamping my bedroom and one of my biggest gripes was cable management. Never cared for satin or silk bedding. But, we did paint our last bedroom in Night Owl & it worked great because it was a ridiculously large bedroom/ sitting area & we had several windows.
I have 2 64” wide windows in my bedroom. The dark walls fits the mood perfectly. It adds a designer flair without paying for a designer. If you love dark bedroom, tv room, or library, I highly recommend Knoxville Gray by Benjamin Moore.
I am NOT going to change my boho bedroom. I took Baiyina Hugeley's style quiz, and it confirmed that my style is boho. I need intense colors, different textures, lots of pillows, and layered rugs. Macrame wall hangings are very cool and creative. The Bohemian style is not fake, artificial, or cliche. It is beautiful, interesting, and creative. This style is not going anywhere. How can a style be cliche? We each like what we like. Desert modern is just a scaled back version of bohemian.

I’ve already bought three sets of those damn curtains. 😂 I absolutely love them. The weights in the bottom are just right, so they hang so beautifully!
Yes. The curtains are FIRE! They totally elevated the look of my living room. The panels are so wide, I only needed one pair to make my windows look full.
I did the desert modern in my main living room a year ago and SO glad I did. I have 3 little ones and seriously this color palette is the best at hiding dirt from the kids 😂 the ivory, blacks, and pops of terracotta are the best! Do it.
I think the problem with these decorating styles like Boho, Farmhouse, Beach, etc., is that they are over-decorated-people put in EVERY Boho item they ever saw or make everything down to the switch plates match the theme-No need to beat us over the head with it! We get it! I think your advice about restraint is the best I have heard in a long time. It could go a long way in saving some of these themes that people are so in love with.
Desert modern - I can totally get onboard with that! I think I have been trending that way for a while without knowing what to call it. Recently got some decorative pillow covers from Woven Nook that are right on point with that whole vibe.
I’m an ex boho lover (still can’t pry the wicker baskets out of my dead hands haha) - this new desert modern is giving me LIFE!!!! Please, PLEASE do a dedicated video on how to achieve this look!!!!! Love ya!

Dark doesn't always mean depressing. Dark paint can make a room feel cozy and moody and white paint can be well just boring
And white can look dull and dirty in a room without a lot of natural light. It looks dingy, not bright.
White can be boring if you put boring furniture in it.

Omg those curtains!! LOVE ❤ so many choices!!
So much fun watching your videos. Thanks for your insightful recommendations 👍
Am I the only one who doesn’t want the video to end?? I need more please and thank you 😊 love you Arvin ♥️♥️
Next week Arvin will be telling us "Desert Modern" is yesterday's news.🤣🤣🤣
Yes cause he change his mind like he change his pants lol 😂
Well styles and our own likes and dislikes evolve and change. A girl has a right to change her mind!...that's what I tell my hubby anyway. Lol
I love the Desert Modern vibe & Casaluna is my new jam 💯! Love your channel!
I did the desert modern in my main living room a year ago and SO glad I did. I have 3 little ones and seriously this color palette is the best at hiding dirt from the kids 😂 the ivory, blacks, and pops of terracotta are the best! Do it.
I love your humor! Makes this so fun to watch while still learning! Thank you! Now off to getting rid of my macramés😂
You can’t beat 1000+ thread count Egyptian cotton sheets on your body and face. It’s heaven!!!
I’m with you…Boho is a no go.
But your videos are not to be missed! So enlightening but entertaining as well.
I love this video bc I have unintentionally been designing my room “desert modern” without realizing it 😂😂 so happy I’m doing the right thing! Lol
Your laugh is contagious. Love your videos and you.
I do like dark bedroom walls, but I have beige drapes and linens so it's not as cave like.
Also works if you live somewhere hot and v sunny- can’t imagine it working somewhere like Scotland 😣
Yes to dark bedroom walls ! So cozy and relaxing 😌
🤣 you make my day, night, evening, when ever I watch your vlog.
I just love your laugh! It makes me laugh every time. ❤️
PS: your shady laugh is everything!!!! lol
I just LOVE those curtains! And that price is amazing. They look so chic and expensive. Thank you as always Arvin🥰
It could go a long way in saving some of these themes that people are so in love with.
agreed
Desert modern - I can totally get onboard with that! I think I have been trending that way for a while without knowing what to call it. Recently got some decorative pillow covers from Woven Nook that are right on point with that whole vibe.
I’m an ex boho lover (still can’t pry the wicker baskets out of my dead hands haha) - this new desert modern is giving me LIFE!!!! Please, PLEASE do a dedicated video on how to achieve this look!!!!! Love ya!
😂 It cracks me up…how you crack yourself up! ♥️
LOVE me a moody dark cave to sleep in! ANY room dark can be gorgeous! Not depressing at all. Totally elevating like a beautifully style hotel over here!
Stop doing Boho?! I was like, how dare! Then he shows desert modern and I'm like YES!
the music and dancing at the start is my FAV part LOL please do it every time!!! xoxox
Just so you know, I ALWAYS ask hehe 😁 Literally love it when you upload and I seriously live for your infectious giggle👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just love your laughter and personality, love, love you.
Arvin, thank you SO freakin much for introducing me to Casaluna bedding. The hubs and I recently redid the guest room but also needed new sheets for the master bedroom and we are in love. No joke, my husband woke up the next morning and could only talk about how good the sheets are! xoxo
Thank you! Thank you for the joy you bring!🥰👍🏼🪞🛋⚱️
My bedroom is exquisite desert modern.
Love it!
Love you! When you brought that petal candle towards the camera, I thought I was suppose to smell it!!🤣😂 smellevision!!
the way it's just silent when u show the photos on screen im CRYING
I love you Arvin!!! Throwin shade and keepin it real! You certainly know what you talking about…
I love moody! So I would disagree with the room feeling closed in. I feel it makes the room seem endless and not trapped. We also have very different styles lol I hate anything beige so yeah 😂
thank GAWD i found your channel before i started going ham and buying a bunch of decor. we all grew up with parents who drilled into us you need matching EVERYTHING (i see you, overpriced furniture sets).
ive been mixing so many textures, colors, fabrics and omg it feels so much more alive compared to some of the stuff you see.
I nearly ripped the sheets off my bed when you said stop with the satin LOL. I have the Casaluna Sateen set so I think I'm safe. haha
I love the Casaluna brand!
Sateen is not satin.
I agree with the busy boho prints. I have them on my patio & it fits better with my outdoor plants. Makes it a vibe!
