Sony 15mm f1.4 is the best vlogging lens for the FX30

- Another family vlog. Still trying to get to know this camera. Shot the entire thing with the Sony 15mm f1.4. I like the image quality and the focal length is perfect when paired up with the FX30 with active stability. The fact that I don't have to stabilize in post, or worry about color correcting is a huge time saver. This camera does it all.
The low light on this camera looks very good. The restaurant scene was a nice showcase of the lowlight performance.
I agree. It's totally usable. SLOG3 sucks but Cine2 is great.
I saw a lot of your videos, so I bought the FX30 + Sony 15mm F1.4. I Am a novice, just started to learn, now in the struggle ND gear. Keep up the good work! Regular use gives me more inspiration for 15mm shots.
Wow! You went all in lol. It's an amazing camera. I've had four other cameras before this and this is by far the best I've ever owned, and you're right. Just keep using it and you'll learn more and more. Thanks for the kindness :)
I’m not quite as brave as you, I owned the ZV-1 and then the ZV-E10, my FX30 arrives in the mail on Thursday!
How are you liking it so far?
Why do I feel this footage looks like Hollywood.. I’m not gonna lie the colour creating , the frame everything looks so cinematic 😊maybe I should get this camera as well as lens
I was shocked at how well it turned out as well. Thanks so much. :)
Great vlog man! Enjoyed this one, footage looks super clean! Happy holidays to you and the family!
Thank you! Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones as well :)
Awesome vlogging work, thoroughly enjoy your personality. Just subbed! Thank you for the FX30 coverage… keep it coming. Definitely gonna be my next go-to for all video related content
Thank you so much. Really appreciate it, man. This camera is a beast, especially for this price. It's almost criminal haha.
This turned out really nice!
Thanks for sharing this vlog and allowing us to tag along your little adventure. Enjoyed it very much (a mix of holidays, architecture, wintry conditions- I never get snow where I live), and photo/video gear talk). Yup, good video overall.
You have a talent for this (the chatting, the video editing, etc…).
Happy holidays! ❄️☃️🎄📸🎥
Thanks so much. You're too kind :) I really do enjoy this hobby. It's so different than my day-to-day job. It's almost like therapy for me. Glad you enjoyed it :) Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones.
This might have sold me on the camera! Awesome to see how it would look in real world vlog use.
:) Don't forget that luts have a lot to do with the IQ as well, but this camera is amazing for stability and small crop factor. It's solid.
@@noisackda2564 what luts are you using?

Thank you :) Everything worked out on this day :P
Awesome! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much :)
Why talented people are underrated..
The date in the title is probably wrong. Should be 2022 instead of 2020. That is, if this is shot on an FX30 which was put on the market only this year. That said, really like the footage and the way the camera stabilizes and holds its focus.
Damn! I didn't even notice the typo Hahaha! Eagle eyes! Thanks so much. The camera with Sony lens combo is a beast! There's nothing it can't do.
Keep doing what you doin, nice job
Thanks so much!
Do a video on settings and how u shot this video
I've had a few requests now so I may just do that :) Thanks for the comment.
I am on the fence about the 15mm. I love primes, optically, no concerns. But considering adding a zoom lens to the kit next. Thank for the post.
I have the sigma 18-50 and it’s amazing. Filming with it all week while I’m in Florida and I’m having a blast with it TBH.
Colors are on point! Stab looks natural as well and I'm jealous that you didn't have to use Catalyst because the FX30 only crops in 10% if I'm not mistaken and I'm sure the rolling shutter being better than the ZV-E10 helps a lot with the wobble. What did you use for shutter speed? That lens is perfect for vlogging and b-roll. Have you used the Viltrox 13mm?
Thanks mah man. No catalyst :P Active stab is very usable on this camera. It punches in a lot less and has zero jello effect. Shutter speed is also normal at 1/60 so motion blur is natural. 15mm wouldn't work on the ZVE10 but it's perfect on the FX30. I now have the 11mm pretty much glued to my ZVE10 and 15 is stuck on my FX30. I have not used the Viltrox 13mm but I hear it's magnificent. I try to stick to Sony as much as I can because of the quick autofocus.
@@noisackda2564 Wow! NOW I definitely want the FX30. Being able to achieve that level of stab at 1/60 is huge. It's not really the crop (you can compensate with a super wide lens like the 11mm or by using Catalyst) but you can't compensate for extreme lowlight situations when you need to be able to keep your shutter speed at 1/50 or 60. I have also shied away from 3rd party lenses because of potential autofocus performance issues. Someone needs to make a tutorial going through the menu system like the ones for the ZV-E10.
@@TimBrownTown It's definitely a level-up camera. Shutter speed rules also apply to this as is does with the ZVE10. I'm just able to drop it to 1/60 because its a cloudy day and I'm also using an ND filter on top of it. I can imagine if it was super sunny, my shutter speed would be around 1/200 with ND filter :( . The biggest thing for me is being able to use 15mm with active crop on. I could never use 15mm with the ZVE10. It just crops in too much. I do want to test this out on a sunny day and see if I can still control the image quality.
@@noisackda2564 Yep. That would be a good one. Dynamic range comparison between the FX30 with S-Log or S-Cinetone and the ZV-E10 with Cine2. You could do bright sunlight and something lowlight. You got me curious, although I know I'm going to want it even more. Too bad I need a new vehicle soon (waiting for prices to crash) or I'd already have it.
@@TimBrownTown All very good ideas :) I'm curious as well about how everything compares. Do the vehicle first for sure haha. The ZVE10 is already amazing. Just takes a little more work.
It looks like a movie 🍿
It was my best work haha! I'm a one-hit wonder :(
@@noisackda2564did you use a LUT?
@@Blazingstorm25 I did yes.
@@noisackda2564 which one if you don’t mind me asking?
@@Blazingstorm25 I don't mind at all. I'm using the Phantom Arri Luts
Great video, man! Would recommend that you only do the movie style black bars on B-roll clips, and full frame in A-roll shots when you're talking. It cuts away unnecessarily much of the video if you use it all the time. Best of luck!
Yeah, the bars are an experiment. I typically don't use them at all, but I thought I would go with a consistent theme here. Thanks man :)
looks great ! what's the LUT you're using ?
Thank you :) I'm using the Stranger Things Lut by Tropicolor :P
Yeah 😊 this LUT is so cool
@@atinaga5082 :P
Is it just me or do I see massive rolling shutter?
Yep there’s rolling shutter but for vlogs I feel it’s completely usable. For professional work I wouldn’t be whipping the camera around so quickly.
THE AUTO FOCUS IS JUST INSANE
It's rock solid.
Hey! Really nice film, thanks for sharing. Did you use any LUTs?
Thank you. I did yes. You can buy it on tropicolor site. Look for TV show luts and it's the stranger things lut. I also did a lot of color-correcting on it.
@@noisackda2564 thank you for your fast answer! you made really nice looking video that inspired me to buy fx30 with sony lense😍🤩
@@leeyakovtravel Thanks for the comment :) The FX30 is an amazing camera. I love it to death.
Wooooow the colors!! No plan on selling this LUT?
Thank you :) It's the Stranger Things lut
How did you expose slog3 properly? Which mode inMultimetering & exposure at what value while vlogging in run & gun situation especially during facetalk ?
I’m super basic in my approach. I’m shooting cineEI with a preloaded lut for preview purposes. I control exposure with an ND filter and nothing more. I’ll underexpose a little because that works better for the image quality I prefer. Everyone else says to overexpose but I don’t like it.
Hi Gabba, would you recommend this lens or the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 if I were starting out in filmmaking and can only have 1 lens now?
Considering weather sealing as well as I intend to bring it travelling and filming in any weather conditions.
I mainly intend to do weddings, travel and some skits
As a one-lens suggestion, I would recommend a zoom lens like the Sigma.
if you could choose between 10-20 f4 lens or the 15mm 1.4 which would you do?
15mm easy :) for my style of shooting. F4 is a nope for me.
wich mic do you use in this vidéo ?
I'm using the Sony ECMW2BT
Love the color of the video, i wonder if zve10 can do the same? since i only own zve10, i am struggling with if i should get another fx30
Thank you :) I think the ZV-E10 is capable of coming very close actually. The reason why everything came together so nicely here is because the weather was perfect for filming which allowed me to have perfect settings on the camera. It looks cinematic because of the fast lens and it was cloudy so I didn't have to crank my shutter speed too high which resulted in natural cinematic motion blur. I wouldn't be able to get this look consistently so it's a bit of a false illusion :) The thing that might be impossible for the ZV-E10 is the cleanliness of the video. The FX30 is a bit cleaner is better in low light.
no it can't. 8 bit vs 10 bit hence i sold my zv-e10
Wow. This footage is crazy. And this is straight from the camera? No color correction or anything?
Thank you! It's not straight out of camera. Used a LUT but very little to no adjustments at all. Just slapped on the LUT and called it a day ")
@@HeyElvisG I'm pretty sure any camera over 2k can do this. The FX30 just happens to be the cheapest pro-grade camera for entry-level filmmakers.

@@HeyElvisG Hey Elvis, thanks so much for the kind words and support. The lut is called Stranger Things lut by tropicolor :)
@@noisackda2564 thank you so much! Does it only work with FX30 or any camera? The FX30 is kinda out of my budget but the A7C isn't. What are your thoughts on the A7C for video?
Hey Noi!
Im struggling between this lens vs the to Sony 10-20 mm (for an fx30 )... I want to do both lowlight vlogging and daylight vlogging. What do you reckon i start with?
Hello! Sorry for responding late. I do not recommend the 10-20 because it's not great in low light. I would actually recommend the 11mm F1.8. It's cheaper than the 15mm and it's also wider bringing you closer to the 10mm mark that you wanted in the 10-20mm. It's also very good in low light and very compact. The FX-30 can do clear image zoom pushing you over the 20mm mark so your 11mm will actually be roughly 11-22mm :)
@@noisackda2564 Amazing response! I'll go with the 11mm, then! I'm very thankful for it. You now have a loyal subscriber:)
@@Magic_Mike69 I appreciate it. I've pretty much owned every APSC lens so I have a good idea of what will work in most situations. All the best :)

What LUT were you using on the camera? Did you preload the Stranger things LUT onto the camera?
I did! Just for preview thought. I don't bake the lut in when I'm recording. I preview it when I'm filming and apply it in post :)
Wow! Looks amazing! Just got mine today. I'm excited to try it out. What color profile did you use? 11? Also what settings did you use?

Thank you! I’m using a relatively cheap K&F filter. Color cast isn’t neural but I think it looks good haha!
i want basically the same exact setup you are using in this video, but i am wondering, is it TOO cinematic for a vlog? there must be a reason nobody's videos look like this right? I am afraid my videos wont be liked because of how cinematic it is, as weird as that sounds.
also subscribed, thank you for the video i needed to see this
Hey, thanks for viewing and thanks for the compliment :) It might be too cinematic I don't know. This was an experiment for me, but I like it. You can always choose to not apply a cinematic lut to it and just use a correction lut like leeming lut. Totally fine. At the end of the day it's what you want to convey. It's true, for vlogs you really don't need it to be cinematic since artistry and mood is used to tell a story. In a vlog there's really no story to tell so it's not needed really but I like it :P
@@vuhlez :) You are welcome
how do you white balance when outside?
For outside natural light I always shoot on auto white balance.
Dude I either over expose or under expose. How did you get this so we’ll balanced?
Appreciate it :) I shoot with a preloaded lut so it pretty much looks perfect on the screen. From that point on I just eyeball it. I don't follow any rules. It's a bit of a cheat code. Not all cameras have this ability to preload luts.
@@noisackda2564 thank you!

What are your thoughts on the s5ii? I’m having a hard time deciding between the fx30 and the s5ii for vlogging
Gonna be honest with you. If I was to start fresh I would probably go with the s5ii. The reason why I decided to get the FX30 was that I have a lot of Sony lenses. With that said. I don't have any regrets. Owning the FX30 I don't feel I'm missing out on anything the s5ii has, since I shoot video 90% of the time. If you are planning to shoot 50/50 video vs photos then go with the Lumix. The pluses of the Lumix is that they are a full frame. What this means is you will get better low light and better depth of field with the right lenses. The pluses for Sony is that Sony is an exciting ecosystem. They are constantly releasing stuff all the time so if you're doing youtube videos you will have a constant stream of content. With Sony, you also have access to a huge variety of lenses. Another huge deal with the Sony system that no one ever talks about is clear image zoom. What this is, is an in-body zoom feature. Pretty much makes every prime lens into a zoom lens. Tough choice though. All in all, I think the two cameras are very close. Can't go wrong with either. You can make some beautiful art with any of the two. You can also make terrible art with them :P The artist is the most important factor here and that's you.
@@noisackda2564 I’m doing 99% video… thanks, I think you helped me decide. I have been struggling, trying to figure out which one. I have been making do with GoPro 9’s and a 80D for the last 9 months… I have learned a lot, but I really need a good “A” camera… GoPros just don’t cut it. I’m not knocking them I still use them… the 80D is great but…
@@yjforlife Appreciate you :) Please understand as well, I'm simply going by specs. I'm not sure anyone reviewing the s5ii is unbiased. From what I've seen they are all paid sponsorships. The camera could be better or worse than the FX30. Spec-wise, they are very close with the edge going to the Lumix IMO. I'm very excited for it TBH, but ecosystem goes to Sony. I mean how can anyone deny this. They release like three new cameras a year plus all the third-party lens makers are going nuts for Sony right now.
@@noisackda2564 I agree about the ecosystem, it was very much on my mind… also the lens options fit what I need much better. As well and Sony is developing apple’s sensor… so going forward I think they have the momentum… with a lot of technology…
Hello from "2how" Channel
I disagree that Sony 15mm is good for vlogging - Your face fills up the frame, cant really see the environment that you are in, and those fake anamorphic black bars make it worse. B rolls are great with the lens tho. So, I argue that Sony 11mm works better for vlogging.
A selfie stick may be a good solution for the face-up-the-frame issue. Check out PGYtech Mantispod!
I like the 11mm as well. The fake anamorphic bars were probably a bad choice for this lens I agree but I too like the aesthetic of it lol. Thanks for your thoughts.
