  • I've been receiving a lot of feedback that people are unhappy with our shift in focus toward using the ketogenic diet and metabolic therapies as a treatment for my schizoaffective disorder. In this video, I address and chat about some of those feelings and share more about why this is still an important project and could still apply to a large number of people.

I have schizoaffective disorder and have watched and loved your videos for years. I take my meds, have been getting exercise, practicing good sleep habits, and doing zen meditation. My overall state has gotten better but I still have episodes. In fact I almost admitted myself to the ward a few days ago, it got so bad.
I'm interested in the keto content, but a lot of it is over my head... I also live on disability and only have $190 for the month after I pay rent. I simply can't afford the keto diet.
I have to admit that I skip through most of your recent videos because of the keto-centric aspect. Maybe you could sprinkle in some videos on other things that help you in-between the keto stuff. Imagine someone like me who takes meds, supplements, exercises, meditates, and writes/crafts, and still has crippling episodes. What do I do Lauren? Either way, I love your channel and have shared many of your videos to help educate my family. Thank you.❤

My cousin committed suicide at the age of 19. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 14. The entire family watched him spiral and disappear into his illness. We are an extremely close family and the pain from his loss was immense. Your story is different as everyone’s is. However, never ever ever would I steal your joy from what I have witnessed recently here. I find it appalling that someone would be upset with you for digging in, doing the work, being scared, being skeptical, and producing your own amazing results. I’m sorry but that’s beyond me. Lauren,
I started watching your channel a little over a year ago. I was starting my nursing program and as part of the curriculum, we take a mental health class along with clinical rotation at a mental health clinic. I was having trouble understanding the chapter on schizophrenia so I came to RUclips hoping I would find some videos that would help me understand better. I found your video on extrapyramidal symptoms and hearing an explanation from you was a thousand times better than anything I could have read in my book. Ever since then I’ve been watching your channel and I enjoy your content so much. This keto journey you’ve embarked on is no exception. I am incredibly interested in seeing what other improvements you see in your life a year from now. Please keep making this content! It is interesting and educational, not to mention very relatable to so many people. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of your viewers! ❤

I think a lot of people who ended up here to learn more about schizophrenia and mental health may be like me and glaze over whenever anyone starts talking about their diets/exercise routine/home décor trends/sports, etc. Just because you have a curiosity for one topic doesn't meant it will transfer to another. While I wholly understand that your current diet and mental health are completely intertwined, it doesn't hold everyone's interest in the same way. But that doesn't mean what you're doing isn't important and that you shouldn't be documenting your journey! I wish you the best as you explore these uncharted waters (while still zoning out whenever anyone starts talking about carbs).

However, life is dynamic and as one's life changes and you're vlogging your life-it may no longer be a fit for your original audience. But, diet (and other things - exercise, sleep, etc) and mental health are intertwined. The health of the body is the health of the mind. This is different than her discussing decor trends. This is a paradigm shift - we've seen the "mind" as somehow separate from the "body" - but what if they aren't?

    • @Cat262
      @Cat262 2 месяца назад

@@kimberlyf4888 Yes they are intertwined, and the granular details of a diet still don't hold my interest. There are many, many important things in the world that I care about that don't hold my interest on a granular level. I tend to tune back in when it comes to end results and impact, but the trial and research phase holds my interest on the same level as home décor, football, etc. It was a descriptor, not a denigration. Not every person is interested in every thing, and thank goodness for that because we're all out here putting our time and talents to different things. That's what makes the world go round.

When a community is built around suffering, a member's attempt to escape it can be experienced by the rest as a betrayal. I admit to having feelings of envy (pain at the good fortune of others, Aristotle defined it) come up connected to the channel's recent shift. It's sad that the bond you develop with someone from sharing common adverse experiences can turn venomous, can turn conditional on the maintenance of the mutual pain.

There are many facets in all areas of life; the fact that you keep searching for better ways FOR YOU and to share all is admirable. Your quest to do the research, build a plan, share the success and tweaks on your journey, whilst being supported by an extremely loving man is A LOT! Honestly seems like it's only something that's beneficial if you're already to a healthy point mentally but for most of the people dealing with schizoaffective disorder the struggle doesn't go away when you stop taking your meds and you just change your diet. Your early videos gave us hope that someone was finally speaking for us in a clear way, honest and for day to day struggles very helpful. I hope one day to get where you are. But most of your watchers that are diagnosed would not change our mental disorder by our diet alone. Just not possible. But seriously thank you for showing us your in this with us not against us. Hi Lauren. I wanted to raise a perspective which was only briefly covered in your video, but which I feel reflects my concerns. I do not have schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder, but do have autoimmune disorders/PCOS. Diet/exercise has improved my symptoms so I am not a skeptic that these interventions work. However, there has been a rise in health influencers in the podcast sphere who endorse certain diets (eg. carnivore) as a “cure all” for many different conditions.
I don’t have a problem with this per se, they might indeed help, but what I do find worrying is the attempts to gloss over any potenial side effects of these diets/gaslighting their audience. Some influencers/followers claim one shouldn't need medicines if they follow the diet properly, if it doesn’t work for an individual and they end up needing to rely on medication they are often gaslit by the community and told they must have made a mistake in implementing the diet. So too, there is a sense in these communities that medication is 'bad' and ailments can be treated with diet alone, and you are a failure or 'brainwashed by big pharma' if you take medication. I am not saying that you have in any way pushed this idea, but I think that it is important to note that many subscribers will not just be consuming your content, which is evidence based and well-balanced, but also the more dubious content from other creators.
Whilst you shouldn’t have to feel you are responsible for other people’s choices, I do think perhaps people are worried about the influence your decision might have on your viewers particularly the lack of discussion of risk/potential for harm. The concern is that whilst this diet may be working for you, and truly be evidence based, it likely isn’t going to work for everyone, and if an individual sees you lowering your medication on the diet they may do this also and experience a relapse in symptoms.
I think this is also where the accessibility concerns come into play. If people can’t afford a specialist psychiatrist/nutritionist to monitor them on this journey, but decide to try it anyway after seeing your great results, they might end up in quite a dangerous situation. I don’t mean this comment in any way to be an attack, just to help you maybe understand some concerns. I have followed you for many years and I know that this absolutely wouldn't be your intention, but just felt the need to comment in case this helps give some context behind many peoples knee-jerk reaction to the keto diet. :)

I agree 100%! The keto diet has many side effects and it’s not recommended to be a long term diet. Only up to 1 year. So I’m wondering what she’s going to do at one year. It can cause kidney, heart and liver issues.

    • @savingpeace8452
      @savingpeace8452 Час назад

Exactly this! Totally agree even tho I’ve been on medical keto for two years now. It has side effects for sure I have ended up in the hospital from complications of the ketogenic diet more than I ever have from my antipsychotics however for me it’s a less risky option when I consider the risk vs benefit long term of not doing the diet in combination with lower doses of certain medications. Every treatment has side effects risks and benefits and none of them are miracle cures you need to make informed decisions with your doctor and look at all the factors physical mental emotional financial and social if my psychiatric medication didn’t exacerbate another physical health condition I had I wouldn’t do keto at all because it’s not very effective for my mental health it helps a little bit and it helps mediate the effects of my antipsychotics because the kinds we have here are so limited I can’t get another kind that would not exasperate my pre-existing condition. If I had access to half the medication available in the US I would not be on keto my electrolytes are all over the place even with supplements I’m prone to dehydration I’ve had arrhythmia’s due to low sodium and dementia from low sodium 3 times and needed a drip I’ve lost muscle mass because of protein restrictions I’m tired a lot of the time I don’t sleep as well and my strength and energy are down in general but to keep my ketones in the level they need to be this is better than a higher dose of one of my medications and not being on keto while on a certain antipsychotic. The side effects of dehydration electrolyte imbalance and unfortunately for me long QT syndrome on the medication that keto enables me not to take is worse so for me keto was an add on that was less dangerous. This did nothing for my psychotic symptoms but did control my hypomanic episodes as well as the medication it enables me not to take without my other medications I would be very sick tho this intervention does seem to function as effectively as a salt based mood stabiliser that has similar side effects but slightly more dangerous. None of these things are a miracle cure this diet does enable me to take my antipsychotics without blood sugar problems and for that I’m glad but I mainly do this diet so I can take the medication that does work not so that I can get off or lower medication it allows me to take more of the medication I need without metabolic side effects

My adult son (schizophrenia) , when we found him (he'd been missing for 2 years) was wrongly medicated, 130 lbs. over weight, and living a very symptom driven life. Now he is regulated on a more proper med and with Keto he is 115 lbs lighter. Can't help but think both of those two things along with family involvement and connection have contributed to where he's at today. Family education, exercise, acceptance and love, channels like this have helped more than I can say. Everyone's journey is unique and knowledge of finding what works for yours is so important. Praying everyone will find their way...

I have dipped out watching these videos for a couple of reasons. The ED thing is the main reason, I generally get uncomfortable around strict diet type content even though you're doing a medically supported program for good personal reasons. The other being that I watch primarily to understand my mother in law better and this is absolutely not something that is within her reach or capacity, so it's kind of irrelevant to me. But through her experience I see the normalisation of 'if western psychiatry doesn't do it for ya, you're a lost cause' so I also understand that aspect of taking control back.

The diet seems to be a miracle cure in your case! With that in mind, it's understandable that people who were attracted to the original focus of the channel would be less interested now, but that's fine. I’ve done a true ketogenic diet for years in my life, and people are curious and want to know about it. But when they see what I do, without “cheating”, doing it every day no matter what, I was AMAZED how almost angry some people were with me, like I was asking them to do it, to “never eat carbs for the rest of their life” (untrue)… even close family were really quite negative about it. All you can do is what’s right for you and get strength from those who are happy for you. It was shocking to me how much people will fight for their “right” to eat cake at weddings, pizza or ice cream with their kids etc. If you found something that works for you that’s ALL that matters.

43 years ago I was diagnosed with bipolar type 1. I just tried the keto diet for a week, coming out of intermittent fasting/semi-fasting. I could make the food good, no problem. As the week progressed, I started to feel slightly weirder than usual, and I got growing sleep disurbance, culminating in all the sleep time being disrupted by me feeling like my entire body was covered in electricity. It was really awful, I mean it was constant throughout all sleep in the end. I was already suffering from bad insomnia/dyssomina, but this was an extra level that was not bearable. So on the 8th evening I ate anything, including carbs, and that night my sleep went back to the usual bad, no more "electricity". Strange, eh? I have never heard of this happening to anyone else. I don't know what it means, but for my organism, it seems keto is not a good choice.

WHAT YOU ARE DOING is offering your self and your life experience to all of us to witness whether the KETOGENIC DIET can allow you to operate in a reasonable way on a daily basis with a very minimal level of medication. While this will not guarantee success for anyone else, it hold out some hope for normalcy that is not available through any medical intervention currently.

One of the cool things emerging from the discussion in the comments on the recent videos is how different people with lived experience are mentioning the non-medical interventions that work for them with regard to managing mental illness. It’s a great reminder that we are not a monolith to be forced awkwardly into “best practices” determined without our consultation. Rather, we are individuals who require individual care plans to which we’ve had some degree of input.
It’s a good reminder that we CAN tune into and trust ourselves, even if we are considered unreliable narrators within the medical system. I think reconnecting with this sense of trust, and as Lauren says, EMPOWERMENT, is key to true healing. Keep listening to yourself and doing what makes you feel healthy and grounded. ❤

Huge shift in focus and emotional tone.

I feel that the earlier videos were consistent with the scientific consensus on schizoaffective disorder. The ketogenic diet is not a part of the current scientific consensus on the treatment of schizoaffective disorder.

I didn’t get the impression the channel was directly promoting the diet per se. I thought it was to experiment, as many persons with mental illness do with vitamins, periodizing medications etc. I thought this was to provide anecdotal evidence, which is as much her right as it is yours or mine. And the drugs aren’t easy, have really unpleasant side-effects and are addictive.

Well, scientific consensus can certainly shift over time, with new information. But, even when the information is known, what is taught and practiced may take decades to change. The fact that she is trying something that is being overseen by her care practitioners and is actually working to help her is amazing.

I don’t have schizoaffective.. I watched a lot of your earlier videos because as a nurse/ health care provider I find them interesting. I honestly never knew someone could live such a high functioning life with this condition!! You are blessed beyond measure to have such an adoring husband and I have no doubt your high functioning is greatly related to his support. I think you might be confusing critical thinking with anger. I don’t think anyone is angry or jealous. I just think people are optimistically cautious. Once again, you are blessed. Support is everything. I just hope people don’t jump to the conclusion that medication is evil and diet cures everything. Medication can be life saving. Thank the Lord we have antibiotics and people need meds sometimes and that’s okay. You don’t score more points in life if you can live medicine free. I notice people like the videos you post about your feelings, mood, psychosis experience in the hospital, because they can relate and it helps them feel less alone. I don’t think they want you to be in that state it’s just relatable and more real and raw. Lots of people in the comments want to know how your symptoms are different or less but you might not want to talk about that. People just want the grit and not the routine if that makes sense! Take care!

Your channel is honest and open and is about you sharing YOUR journey. I have learned a lot in trying to help a loved one. You are right that some people at a low point cannot handle the idea of taking on a big venture like keto, but if families watch this, we can help and encourage our loved ones in the many ways you have shared. I have learned so much from you.

Tbh I love this keto content. I been watching some of the dr Palmer interviews and I got to realize that the ketogenic diet is actually a baseline for treating any mental illness. I just started keto and I already see benefits. In terms of my mood and my cognition. Even some of my delusions seem bit less believable to me whilst just on my meds I still strongly believed in them. Btw I have paranoid schizophrenia.

Advising that you separate your journey on keto from your mental illness is tantamount to telling you that you shouldn't discuss your experience with other treatments such as medication and therapy. Speaking as a person who has lived with severe and persistent mental illness for over 30 years, i am extremely grateful for having heard about ketogenic diet ftom you. I knew nothing of this prior and now have hope that i wont have to be stuck the way am now. I have been medication compliant for many years, but one medication in particular makes it difficult for me to leave my disability status. I would like to work on a more sustainable option for long-term treatment. I have been on the diet for a week and i already see a difference.

I'm really happy that you're still kicking butt. Keep it up. You really have to consider your own feelings about this. It's your life, and the intention that you're trying to help yourself and others is literally the only thing that matters. Full-stop.

So happy for you Lauren, regarding some relief of symptoms you're experiencing! So, so happy for you. It would be so 'mentally unhealthy', inappropriate, dysfunctional, codependent to 'man' if others feel you need to stay 'sick' for them, to give them 'company' ... I don't know where to start with words on people being 'angry' with you...to me that is so unwarranted, and again, to do so - to be angry - is a sign of mental illness manifesting.

I have found your keto journey very interesting and watching you improve is really wonderful. I know diet is so important. My family radically changed ours for my husband's health about 10 years ago. We havent eaten out in 10 years and I miss certain things but I never want to go back to how life was when he was suffering. I've found that it makes people mad/offended that he can't eat certain things, or can't eat out. Its a complicated subject

I don't have schizophrenia but I have other chronic disorders, and it's hard when the thing your favourite youtuber seems to be selling is snake oil. Although yours is not a weight loss journey, it smacks of those folks who are on a diet or weightloss kick and brag about how great they feel and you know that these lifestyles or diets are not sustainable long term, and you will likely go back to feeling like crap when that new car smell wears off. But you are so relatable and charismatic, it's hard not to be happy for you as you seem to have found something that is either alleviating your symptoms or coinciding with a natural remission from your symptoms. So your "fans" are happy for you (of course) but it's hard when what it appears you have on your hands is a snake oil.

My mom had schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. Unfortunately, her illness was made much worse by the extremely serious childhood trauma she experienced. I understand how many sufferers may be prone to suspicion and fear, it’s just a natural part of the illness for many. I’m happy for you going on this journey! I’m actually going with you - 5 weeks into medical keto and following you closely. Thank you for your courage and strength!

Isn't it? I'm very elated that you brought this concept up. It's nice and peaceful to change your thinking. For myself. 😊❤ I'm so proud of you. You are a strong and confident woman. I only aspire to have the skills you have one day. Thank you for making all of your videos. Because look how far you've come in 8 years! Wow!😊 I think, for me, it's the fact that I wanted the change so I became the change in my life. I did something about it. And I refuse to give up! And that's what I hear in this video. Keep up the great work

I have a family history of schizophrenia and I am a woman in my 30s who had dealt with life-long anxiety and depression, and I like to educate myself about schizophrenia so that I'm equipped to recognize signs and symptoms if they do arise. I find the ups and downs and treatments and experiments of your life that you're sharing with us to be immensely helpful. Eight months ago you posted about your experience being admitted to psychiatric care, and now you're sharing your span of time with minimal symptoms. This is very helpful because it allows us to see your experience with a chronic mental illness at every stage. Many of us (myself included) think when we are in a good way, there is nothing to worry about or we are suddenly neurotypical and no longer need medication/treatment, but the fact that you document the highs as well as the lows is just a perfect example of how mental illness operates at a higher/functional level.

Well said and very relatable. Over the ten years of being ill, I have struggled to accept it as chronic, but that's partly to do with the fact that I can't stand the medicines I've tried and/or stayed on. Keto is a better option so far and I hope we all have improved symptoms on it for those who use it to treat mental conditions. I love the idea of taking power over our issues.

If you truly have schizoaffective and you know changing your diet doesn't change a mental disorder. No cure means no cure. Meds are necessary. Because it doesn't change every good period eventually follows by an episode.
