      a long time ago I came to your channel because I was recently diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, Thanks for making your channel and showing it's possible to be a normal person that leads a normal life with schizophrenia, I've found medicine that works for me and im not acting like I have a personality disorder anymore, every once in a while I still believe people are trying to poison me, or my doctors trying to hurt me, but im not going off the wall in a manic episode over it, or having explosive rage, I wanted to say this because I made a comment that implied I was having a tough time with my diagnoses, and wanted to say I'm getting better in case you happened to worry about a random stranger on the internet for some reason.

    As someone who just got out of the psych ward last week, be careful. I have been on the OMAD diet for a couple of years and I have lost a ton of weight and it has been great, so I am not saying anything against Keto. But before I went to the psych ward this time, I was feeling exhausted and it was the lead up of me getting unwell. Usually before I go to the hospital, I always feel sedated and unbelievably tired, with low motivation, but a lot of mania. Everybody presents differently, of course, but I am just letting you know what happens to me and that may be the reason you are feeling tired and sedated, not because of your diet or your meds, but because you are starting to get unwell. I hope that is not the case for you, but please be mindful.

    I've been on a keto diet before and my experience was being very tired in the beginning. My body was still looking for carbs to burn. Took a while before my body adjusted.
    No advice on your meds but I thought it was very dismissive of the keto lady to say psychiatrists and physicians are hesitant to adjust your medications because they don't want to be sued or liable. I think the real reason is because they want to make sure it doesn't adversely affect your mental health when and if they drop your prescription down.
    I'm just a mother of a bipolar one who's prone to psychosis. Sometimes it's very nuanced and you can see it coming on. You just have to be careful and watchful. Your psychiatrist is always number one in my opinion. But listen to your close loved ones. Your husband😂

      @@Echo-yk1idAgree. How the heck can she know why the medical professionals make the decisions they make. Could it possibly be that they are putting their patient’s best interests first, and are not worried about being sued. Sounds like the psychiatrist is willing to work with this, but this ‘keto coach’ is already drawing lines in the sand, and subtly making it an us against them situation, which could potentially be extremely dangerous. I don’t like it. I’d find someone more well rounded and opened minded. Besides the fact that the coach said this before Lauren had even heard back from her psychiatrist. She covers her butt well though. I’m sorry. I’m a good read on people. I do not like this woman.

    I got this starting keto felt amazing got myself so excited that it was going to work and then started feeling what I associate with oversadation from my antipsychotic and lowered the dose that was a disaster for me because I had actually had a mild hypomanic episode during the first few weeks an not realised then crashed into what was a very physical kind of depression and exhaustion and brain fog although it was hard to identify as depression because I reasoned that I was understandibly disappointed about this set back and I was so determined to keep thinking keto would let me get off my medication or Atleast lower it that I decided this was actually a good sign and meant I was already ready to start lowering my antipsychotic. Looking back I can see this but at the time I was so so hopeful about getting off medication that I had totally missed my elevated mood and energy and trouble sleeping as keto effects and then similarly I missed that the fatuige and brain fog was not also a positive sign of the keto medical diet working and that the medication was the problem. I went into the keto diet like it was a battle between keto or medication and I was so stuck in that mindset that I didn’t realise that keto and the medication were not working against each other that actually it was the other way around that keto had caused a mild and brief destabilising effect on my mood as I had been warned it could and I choose to disregard this common side effect of starting and blame my medication which incidentally was the only think keeping me from spiralling Into psychosis. I really hope you aren’t like me and are feeling like medication and keto have to oppose each other because in a lot of cases they work together and yes I did eventually lower my doses but not till 6 months into the diet when we understood my baseline. Also ruling out illness particularly covid and possible pregnancy or period changes due to hormones are logical steps before deciding it’s the medication. A lot of people on keto find that the increased energy keto gives them makes the sedation from their medications less not more in epilepsy and bipolar so it’s not always the case that you start to feel more side effects of your medication it goes the other way too which is why keto compliments medication so well for those of us who are using both the medical keto diet and medication to manage our psychotic illness

    People are saying they are worried about the medication changes being talked about so early on and Lots of us do the medical keto diet with supervision and stay on our medications but I too am saddened to see how flippantly people and in particular the “keto experts” response to this is. I felt that doctor Palmers response to Lauren’s obvious hope and anticipation of being able to lower medication was far more balanced and appropriate that waiting for 6 months to see if it was helping before doing anything to medication doses and also his warnings about the risk of starting the therapy were appropriate. I think the therapist is being much more balanced in her reflection of the situation than the keto lady or Lauren and I so hope that Lauren can see some of this it’s still so so early and starting the therapy is known to have short term effects on mental health medication metabolism and all over physical health. Jumping to the conclusion that it’s potentiation when there’s so many other more likely factors to rule out first is extremely irresponsible of the keto coach who has obviously not read the research on the much more likely effects of the early stages of ketogenic therapy. I so worried that people will see this and think that they too can have this unrealistic and unsubstantiated response to keto so early on and there is plenty of research to show the blood levels of medication and simple tests that will show if the metabolism of the medication has changed it’s actually more common for the medical keto diet to cause the blood levels of certain medications to drop and to have side effects from that this is well known and proven in research and actively tested and managed by doctors overseeing patients doing keto for seizure control. In some cases the medication is immediately doubled in the case of some mood stabilisers anti seizure medications because we already know they metabolise faster or less effectively whilst someone is in ketosis so to assume the levels are going up so soon and without a test and ruling out more likely things is dangerous and irresponsible. Please please please everyone I know medication sucks I know antipsychotics can suck the joy out of your very soul like your own real life Harry Potter dementor but keto helps many of us deal with that very side effect because it so often compliments medication and reduces side effects. Whatever you do please look into the research and ask a pharmacist if you have questions as they are free to access and have all the knowledge and expertise about the medication and the state of ketosis on the effects of medication from studying the effects of ketones in diabetes side effects and from their patients on seizure medication non of this is new information there is 100 years of research on this diet and it’s effects please look at that too not just the things being said here or by dr Palmer as he’s only one doctor and he hasn’t yet completed any trials that would be considered credible yet his findings indicate that we need more research more double blind randomised clinical trials which is exactly what he is doing now and that’s fantastic but it’s those trials are not yet complete or peer reviewed and not all research is rated the same there’s checks and balances in place so that people know what is a study that is reliable and unfortunately doctor Palmer has not yet had time to complete work to this standard and even then it must be compared with all the other credible studies findings in order to form a peice of the puzzle and this is I imagine what dr Palmer himself would say and did say about just not knowing at this point because of the lack of research for mental illness specifically

    to feel this hopeful but just as Dr. Palmer said you are resilient and very strong and have been able to create a beautiful life with one of the most debilitating mental
    illness. Trust me, coming from him is a huge compliment and should make you feel very proud of what you have accomplished.

      I agree with her therapist. No long-term studies show dramatic decreases in symptoms of schizophrenia because of a ketogenic diet. My brother is a psychologist and over the years he has had patients try keto for schizophrenia and bipolar. Sadly the results weren't great. A few clients saw minor short-term improvements, but nothing dramatic, and most quit the diet because it is very restrictive and hard to stay on long-term.
      It would be beyond awesome if keto could get Lauren off her meds (or help her lower the dosages) and reduce or eliminate her symptoms, but I dont think achizophrenia is a metabolic disorder. Schizoaffecrive disorder is a very challenging illness, and i fully umderstand lauren's hope that keto will change things for her. When my mom got sick with dementia, I went crazy looking up alternative treatments and became convinced that I could stabilize her with all kinds of supplements and diet ideas. I bought all kinds of brain stimulation audio stuff, and even took her to LED red light therapy at a spa. Nothing worked, even though I found research papers claiming that all these treatments held promise and had even stopped the progression of dementia for a few people.
      Hope is important, but so is keeping enthusiasm in check. I wouldn’t want keto to fail for Lauren and have the disappointment trigger her. I am rooting for her, and I hope the diet will help, but if it doesnt, there are meds she cam still rely on, and who knows when one day soon a cure for this illness will come out.

      @@jeanpaultongeren125 one example is not a research study. I made this same mistake when my mom got dementia. I would read about someone who took a specific supplement or did some kind of therapy amd I would jump on it and get my mom on it, certain it would work for her too. But these were just anecdotal reports and very tiny studies with only a couple of people. I was so desperate for my mom to get better that I would try anything (within reason) that anyone said had worked. It's ok to try alternative therapies, but people need to remain realistic. Diet has not been shown to eliminate symptoms of schizophrenia in any large-scale study.

      about the ketogenic diet and its efficacy treating mental illness. Dr. Palmer has been using this treatment for many years and has helped many people put their
      illness into remission. I also suggest you check out the RUclips channel Metabolic Mind. I also do not think anyone has the right to question anybody's hope or optimism. My hope is that one day mental illness will be treated with a diet and lifestyle intervention just like Type 2 diabetes and Heart disease and the Psychologist and Psychiatrists
      will start treating the cause of the disease rather than the symptoms. Have a lovely day.

      @@mygirldarbydementia is very hard to treat, it’s prevention that matters most in this case. Many people heal schizophrenia with diet changes.. if diet changes won’t help, then what will? We decided to take him to the park and talk, we told him the only way he could go home was to check in a mental behavior clinic first.He agreed and they put him on ( forgot what its called ) where he takes a monthly shot. This made a world of difference.He is no longer violent and he gets along with everybody at home, holding a part-time job but he still have symptoms but he is doing well. He probably will live with us a along time.The mental health system is broken, terrible. Thank God you have a supportive husband. Can I ask a salient question? Does Nicole Laurent have either Schizo aAffective disorderr or Schizophrenia? Because if not, I don't think a kook should be teling someone who has Schizo Affective Disorder that their brain is healing and they should be reducing their medication. Because what will eventually happen is psychosis, hospitalisation to stabilise you and a realisation that any diet, Keto or otherwise, does not work. Do you want to take that risk?

    • @80islandia
      @80islandia 3 месяца назад +1

      Schizoaffective dx here. While I see where you’re coming from with the first point and agree that potentiation should be presented as one of several explanations that require further reflection and consultation, I take issue with your pre-emptive conclusion that Lauren is going to end up in psychosis and back in the hospital if she reduces meds.
      That’s a rote line that people with psychotic disorders hear all the time. It positions people like myself and Lauren in automatic deficit, with the world essentially setting us up for failure for daring to be autonomous and for thinking critically about the highly problematic medical model.
      Statements like this also play into the false narrative that we are a monolith who need to adhere to a singular method of treatment. In reality, meds may help some of us, metabolic interventions may help others, and uncovering deeply-buried traumas may be the solution for yet another set of people.

    I love cardio, it's a great form of exercise for this illness I think. When I used to prioritize strength training and lifting weights it kinda ruined my health for years. Now that i shifted my mindset to cardio it's helping with tons of physical issues I guess.

    Having a similar condition, I went full carnivore but, it wasn't for that. It was for arthritis I had since my early 20's. It saved me from several joint replacements. I'm not going into all the other benifits I've noticed but I do have something to say about your needing to take electrolytes and supplements. The problem is the vegetables.. They block the nutrients and vitamins in your meat and meat fats from being absorbed by the body. Many plants are pushed on us for the nutrients and vitamins yet, they don't tell you that they usually have chemicals that block the absorption by the body as a natural defense. Remove them and you will get everything you need from the meat and fats. The only thing extra you need is salt and some people do need magnesium that can be found in electrolyte drinks to avoid leg cramping at night. In some ways it's more difficult to stick to than keto but, it's a step beyond in the benifits category. I'm not saying you should do it but, it wouldn't hurt anything to look into it a little.

She made sure she had a lot of support. I think medically she is looking to switch her body over to burning fats for the effects it has on her metabolism, and her psychiatric conditions rather than for weight loss. Her version of the keto diet is quite strict in terms of limiting carbs. That's all I know off the top of my head.

    When my son was not on a prescription, it was a nightmare for over 2 years. He would often talk about going to live in the bush. He had long hair and a beard. When people talk about people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder messing with their meds, it gives me PTSD. I just think it is talked about so lightly on here. It makes me think this is a person who has never had a loved one with this illness, they don't seem to have any idea of the consequences of no prescription. This just seems like a way to make money. There's no benefit to this because people have been messing around with diets and supplements for decades. People shouldn't experiment with mental illness especially when they have children. In my opinion. I'm pretty sure they do research globally. ( When my son is sick he wants to get a job, go get a degree to become a professor or have an office, go to the gym and so on. He never wants to sleep. He will wander around trying to get jobs until the police are called and he will go to the college and hang out there every day all day until they also call the police on him. There's something about achieving that he is fixated on and it's not healthy. It's related to hormones I think, it's biological.) Aripiprazole reduces dopamine activity where it is too high, helping with symptoms like hallucinations. Dopamine is a hormone. Which makes me think thyroid gland or pituitary gland. Which is above metabolism.

      Lots of us do the medical keto diet with supervision and stay on our medications but I too am saddened to see how flippantly people and in particular the “keto experts” response to this is.

      @80islandia 3 месяца назад +1

      I can attempt to speak to this. I’ve been on anti-psychotics and have experienced long-term fatigue from other causes, such as work-related burnout.
      In my case, sedation from antipsychotics involved morning tiredness to the point where waking up was difficult, a hard time emoting/creating facial expressions, and difficulty thinking and speaking clearly. I would compare it to the feeling of waking up from fainting and trying to reorient the self.
      For me, chronic fatigue involved being able to wake up in the morning for a few hours but then experiencing afternoon exhaustion. My brain felt like oatmeal and I got tired from doing simple tasks. But it didn’t feel like waking from a coma, it just felt like a slog.
      TL;DR: Antipsychotic sedation, for me, is like being in a dream state. Fatigue is like trudging through water. It’s similar, but distinct.

    • @mygirldarby
      @mygirldarby 3 месяца назад +11

      They can be hesitant to lower dosages because it can cause a patient to go into psychosis. It's a serious consideration. And those doctors _are_ good ones. A doctor who doesn't automatically do what a mentally ill patient wants them to do based on her belief that a new diet is making her brain "work better" is not a bad doctor. That is sensible. The woman she speaks with, Nicole, does not have the medical training of a medical doctor and probably shouldn't be deciding that Lauren feels sedated because keto is helping her. She is just guessing and that guess could land Lauren in a psychiatric hospital.

      Overall the keto coach did speak about psychiatrists in a negative light. I think it shows that she is biased and arrogant. She is a coach and didn't go to med school. She has no ability to prescribe anything, and it's irresponsible to suggest a change in medication. But, let's be honest. This entire experiment is not an experiment at all. The entire plan revolves around reducing medication. It is what Lauren WANTS to do and the keto coach has a personal and professional stake in making that happen. Lauren has said in the past that she has delusions about her meds. I feel for her and wish she didn't need them but think she does. I feel bad for her because this keto coach is literally playing into that delusion imo. I feel worse for her audience who may try this without medical support and suffer for it. I think this content is highly irresponsible. People with schizophrenia look up to her. I don't have schizophrenia and have no stake in the outcome of this. It can't hurt me. It absolutely can hurt someone else who tries to emulate her.
