One thing I noticed Scott is your visits to the Philippines are somewhat short. It's a big decision to go full-time. I wouldn't sell off everything. Especially your house. For me, 6 months at a time works. After doing this for 4 years now, I'm still on the fence as far as going full time.

The main thing is don't jump the gun. Make sure you are ready to do it when you feel it's the right time. Another thing is while you are waiting for the right time to retire in the Philippines, make sure you take care of your health, walk more, lose weight, a little strength training and eat the right types of food. Health is wealth when you retire to the Philippines.

I have committed to living in the Philippines, my worry is health insurance. I just wish the medacare would be available. I think if you pay all your life it should be available anywhere you go. I have heard that congress in the Philippines were discussing it, but I’m sure like everything nothing will become of it. I’m going on 2 years full time. I have lived in Taguig for 4 months, Iloilo for 6 months and now in imus Cavite, but I think I like Manila area better, everything is so convenient, except for traffic!!😆. I started going to Philippines back in 2009 and decided then I wanted to retire here. I know no place is really safe now days, but the states is rampant with evil.

I haven't found the healthcare of the hospitals to be very good in Philippines.

In the subdivision where my wife and I have a house there are a few expats living there but most are Filipinos. The first time that we went to the subdivision I was there mostly by myself because my wife was in Meycauayan visiting her family. To get to know people I would just walk around and say hi to people which lead to having conversations and that was a way that I got to know people. It's the best way to get to know people regardless if you are single or have a family. Don't be afraid to go out and let yourself be seen because the people are very friendly in the Philippines. It's a great way to make friends and by doing that you can ask about people going to the grocery store or how to get a ride there to get foods and many other things so don't be a stranger.

How admirable of you to make an effort to reach out to the locals . That's what we found endearing in some foreigners,. but that is rare to be honest.

Scott all comments are very good points and suggestions that anyone moving to a another country will encounter. It really will require a lot of adjustments and a deep commitment to thoughtful, careful planning to flush out those areas of life and the things you can't comfortably live without. Critical thinking is going to play a pivotal role in determining what is necessary and what can be let go of to ensure happiness and contentment in a new environment.

There are a lot of important points to think about Scott. I don't know about there in the States but for Canadians rules for the wife's pensions can be a sticking point.
As for me I love our city here in the Philippines and I'm completely comfortable, however after a couple of years away from Canada Merlyn and I both want to get back for a while, maybe 6 months. Going back permanently after selling our condo a couple of years in the future could also be a possibility, while just coming back to the Philippines for 6 of the colder months every 2 or 3 years might be all we need to be happy.
You're probably smart not to sell your house in the US until you've tried this for at least a few years.

Just another point.. remember the hospitals are owned by the doctors, the doctors that are treating you...think about that..and hospital s love to see a foreigner "walk in the door " or better still " be carried in through the door"

Not to many foreigners, just look at Dumaguete.. everything goes up in price and local people are more money orientated.Any trouble you may encounter, if you are in a heavy concentration of western foreigners, will be with western foreigners.. just saying..

Good video, as a long term (20 yrs) expat in Thailand a priority should be good health insurance with a decent hospital in your area. Pre- existing conditions will hamper your ability to get good coverage.12 years ago I needed emergency bypass surgery. Fortunately I still had insurance with the O&G co. I was working for and they covered it.
If I had to pay out of pocket it would decimate my savings.
If I was you I'd be looking at my options. As you experienced recently 30+ plus hours door to door isn't going to work if you plan to go to the US for anything major.
Estate plannong: Can Cecil access any SS benefits from the Pils if something should happen to you? IE:Survivors pension?
By the sounds of it you seem well equipped to take any small risks in retiring there.

Im not sure if she can access Social Security benefits from the Philippines or if she would have to travel to the US. She is a US citizen so she could do so in that situation. Health insurance is something we would certainly be looking for after moving to the Philippines.

There's nothing in America or any other Western countries for that matter, that you can't have/obtain in the Philippines. They have cars, TVs, nice homes, swimming pools if you fancy them, nice beaches, super malls, etc. A lot of people feel that because they think the Philippines is a 3rd world country, which it actually isn't by GDP, you can't have nice things. People are too much in their "bubble" in western countries.

Just do not get really sick or injured badly. Have a medical plan that includes evacuation.
