I have the focus issues with my 32 day old Osmo Action 4. Sold my Gopro hero 8 to buy this. Had to complete a Repair Request Form on the DJI website and now have to post the camera to Holland from the UK, where I live. If they don't fix it I'll immediately go to my credit card company, using Section 75, which is a protection policy we have here in the UK when a customer has purchased an item which is not fit for purpose. Any action camera is only as good as the quality of service you receive when the camera goes wrong
Hello. I agree with you about the service. Is everything out of focus or just things that are close to the lens? Action cameras are focused at the hyperfocal distance which is about 3 to 4mm from the lens so anything closer will not be sharp.
Yes, I had to return my 'new' action 3 last week, again with the focus issue and the month of manufacture was August 23. It was clearly well out of focus at 30 to 40cm and still soft at 45cm on a bright day so it had to go. On the DJI website it states it should be in focus from 30cm to infinity whereas the action 4 spec sheet shows a focus from 40cm. However, you're not the only one that has purchased an action 4 recently with the same focus issue, there's plenty of reports if you look for them. Sad thing is, it's just a minor tweak/turn on the lens to fix it, turns out the lens on some cameras has been fitted a little too close to the sensor. You'd think with all the moans on RUclips, and there's plenty, that DJI would have got their QC dept. in check by now. I think this issue has really damaged their sales and if they don't get it sorted by the action 5 release, old GoPro will bite back. One thing to add though, if you're not going to be doing any proper action stuff, just some vlogging, then the pocket 3 seems to be pretty good in most of the reviews I've seen, just wish it wasn't so expensive :(

I figured setting the EV to -0.3/-0.7 makes a considerable impact on the image quality, reducing a bit of the excessive brightness level.

Hi, great video! One thing though, did you film the entire video with the Action 4's internal microphone? Thinking of picking it up for a vlog set up but not too sure how the microphone performs (for a low profile vlogging kit)
Hello. Yes everything was filmed with the internal microphone. I don't think you need an external one with this camera but if you decide to get one, then get a wireless option. This way the microphone will not pick up any sound of you holding the camera in your hand.

Just don't have it too close to your face. It's an action camera so it requires some distance to focus.

@@M1R0_Life_through_a_lens Yeah, I have many power banks and we usually are in our car so charging shouldnt be an issue and Im glad I decided against it because I can use that 100 dollars to get a single DJ Mic 2 Transmitter.

Thanks for the video! Do you think this would work ok for recording point of view or similar street interviews? If it was connected to DJI Mic 2 I'm guessing the sound quality etc would be a lot better too, or maybe no need for the mic if the built in mic on this is good enough?
Hello. This will work very well for POV videos and the microphone is really good but if the camera will be in contact with somthing, then the microphone will pick it up. In this case use the Mic 2. It works really well. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

Absolutely great review! I plan on doing a lot of backpacking and adventure activities. After many reviews I am tossing up between Insta360 x3, Insta360 go 3 and the Action 4. What are your thoughts having used them? Thank you heaps
Hello. I haven't used the Go 3 but it looks interesting. The video quality is the best on OA4. X3 is a 360 camera so it suffers from video fidelity a lot BUT it is a 360deg camera and nothing gets close to this.
I would go with OA4. I find it to be the best of the three. Insta360 X3 requires more post production work so...

I am thinking about upgrading from my GoPro Hero8. I like the picture and stabilization of it but it frequently freezes and crashes and sometimes I have to remove the battery to get it back running, which is of course annoying (especially when you are sitting in kayak). I have heard that newer GoPros still have that issue, so I am thinking about changing the brand. Does DJI have any similar software issues or do the cameras work reliably? What I like about the GoPro is the loud beeping so that I know it actually turned on (or off). Dies the Osmo Action have something similar (My insta360 go2 only vibrates and I never hear that...)
Hello. This is my second DJI osmo action (I have the 1 and 4 ) and I NEVER had any software/hardware issues.
The camera makes a sound (loud im my opinion) at startup and shutdown. I have it set to mute because there are two displays that are always on and you can see if the camera turns off from both sides (you can have one sceern off optionaly).
I hightly recomend this camera.

Hi, you mentioned the codec issue that slows down the editing process quite a bit, wondering if you can give an idea of how slow? Like if you were to compare it to footage from a gopro perhaps?
Hello. I don't know how the GoPro videos work but compared to my Sony A7IV in 4k and 10bit it's about the same. In both cases I have around 150Mb/s of data rate and a "high" profile of the codec (this is default on bots cameras). I have no problems on my workstation with NVIDA Quadro RTX 5000 with 16GB of VRAM but on my home PC with GTX 1060 6GB it's a different story. Here I have to work on a 1080p timeline and sometimes I make proxys for editing. I hope this helps.

This works for almost all situations.

Great review and your video looks stunning, love the colors! Just wanted to point out that DJI doesn't use a weird codec, they use H.265 also known as HEVC (high efficiency video codec) which is just what it sounds like, it's a very efficient video codec. It can compress much higher quality video into smaller file sizes compared to the old H.264 which is the old "normal" codec. H.264 has bigger file sizes with worse quality video so H.265 is just much more efficient and you don't need a beefy computer, you just need a computer that has dedicated encoders and decoders for H.265. Most PC's don't for some reason but every M1 and later Mac does so you can have the slowest base model M1 Mac and edit these files without any issues whatsoever. This is also why 10-bit H.265 doesn't work in the free version of DaVinci Resolve on PC's, they do not have support for 10-bit H.265 while M1 and later Macs do so you can edit 10-bit H.265 files in the free version without any issues. So what i'm saying is that this isn't a bad thing with the camera, it's just a thing your computer can't do.

Great review! I am torn between the GoPro Hero 12 and the Dji action 4 but the only thing holding me back on the action 4 is for mountain biking and road cycling the footage looks too shaky in my opinion in any videos I've seen. To be fair to the GoPro footage is buttery smooth even on my Hero 9 but its getting a mind of it's own now freezing a lot and switching off mid ride! Would love your thoughts? Thanks
Hello. I think the stabilisation is very much the same on both cameras. Sometimes people put ND filters on and the record with a slower shutter speed. That makes things look really bad if the camera is shaking. I would go with DJI OA4 because of the mounting system and a longer lasting battery. Thanks for the comment. Happy new year. Cheers!

Hello. My max time of recording was around 10min and the camera didn't overheat. I typicaly record shorter clips. From the tests of other reviewers there are no isuess with overheating. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!
on that amaizing shot that you have at night what is your settings? 4k, 25fps, dlog m, with 1/100, autoWB , iso 100-3600 or 100-1800?
Hello. My settings were 4k, 25fps, D-log M, ISO 100-3200, shutter speed 1/100-1/8000s, noise reduction and sharpening both -2.
@@M1R0_Life_through_a_lens do you have try 4:3 without stabilization and then stabilazed by gyroflow just to set 1/50 shutter speed?
No I haven't tryed it that way but it sounds like a good idea.

that was too stady even at night 6400 bring the light about the same with shutter 100 iso 3200 but have more noise

Hi, may i know if your Action4 units have hot pixel issue during long exposure photo or time lapse shot? I tested 3 units and all have some form of hot pixel at above 10 sec exposure, even at ISO100. Keen to know if other owners have this issue too. Thanks.

hi amaizing video and knolwdge too , i see d log have huge diffrent in low light compare to normal profile + low light mode.. is anything else that you can try with normal to bring better condition like higher iso and noise reduction from da vinci?
Hello. If you manually set the exposure, then you will get similar results with Normal colours compared to D-log M. I've used the non-Pro mode in the video where exposure is set by the camera and it's really dark in low light. Not the best option in my opinion. I'll make another video on this topic ;). I think if you can spare the money, then it's definitely worth upgrading. It's a much better camera. The Action 1 was amazing but the video quality is "old school 4K". The Action 4 is really sharp and the D-Log is a big improvement. It is more taxing on the computer though. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

How does this do with things further away in post production? I often take video of objects in the sky and they can range in distances greatly. At the moment when zooming in in post many objects look like simple black orbs. Would like to get better images in them but am limited to around the price of an action 4. I love the 120 fps and 4k resolution that's definitely what I'd prefer but am curious about zoom both pre and post production.

Hello. Action cameras have a really wide field of view so it's impossible to capture details with them. Zooming in pre and in post is pretty much the same thing. You're limited with "just" a 4K resolution so this will not work. The only way is to get a camera that has an optical zoom. Honestly a 4K 120fps camera is going to cost around 2000$+ and the price of a lens is another ~1000$+. I don't see any other way ;(

@M1R0_Life_through_a_lens thanks for the fast reply. I have a Canon rebel t6 with a 75-300mm lens attachment but it films in 1080p but I figured the zoom wouldn't be too great. The things I'm looking to catch are very fast so the 120fps makes it so much easier to do so. I think I will just maintain the rebel t6 for now and do what I can with it, perhaps I'll get lucky. After this video I've decided to go with the action 4 it's wider fov will help get a better track of objects though detail maybe lacking.

Hello. Yes I had to incloude a few B-roll shots from the Sony fullframe. All the vlogging bits were recorded with the DJI OA4 though (except the ones were I show the camera in my hand).
All sound is strait crom the OA4. I don't think there is a need for an external mic because the sound is surprisingly good on this camera.

Unfortunately, this camera does not expose correctly; from my experience, if I shoot in manual mode, I am exposed correctly, but the sky is overexposed, if I shoot in auto mode, I am underexposed, but the sky is well exposed.

Update ; I use DJI action 4. Unfortunately, the camera does not expose correctly either in manual or auto mode. In auto mode the ev should compensate by + 1 minimum but instead of being at +1 it reaches -2 and I am underexposed, in manual mode I am correctly exposed but the backroand is overexposed. I understand that the sensor is not too big, but it should expose correctly, as does my phone, which has a much smaller sensor than this camera.
In my opinion it's only software issues.
A smartphone uses computational photography to achieve a kind of HDR image. If you want to get the full 11Stops of dynamic range, then use D-log M and manually colour grade. I know it's not a simple answer but the video fidelity is much better on an action camera then an smartphone. Less rolling shutter and better micro contrast. Cheers!
@@M1R0_Life_through_a_lens Let's agree that the camera is not exposing correctly, the EV should be at +1 or higher, but it is upside down; Although the sensor sees that there is weaker light, the EV goes to -2 which is very strange. As I said before, I understand that the sensor is not physically too big, but this fact does not justify this problem, during the day it should be perfect.
Hello. You can set the EV to 0 (balanced) or whatever value you want and the camera will keep it there by adjusting the shutter speed and ISO. I don't really see the problem.

I have bought one use one hour and black screen !!!! Just come back and change of the dispositive because this cam has no reset material ! When you are in other country you have to come back in the country of origin for warranty ! I prefer leave this product for others. For me it is a child product. No profesional.
