    I’ve made it through the first minute and I already want to thank you. 90% of these RUclips videos on the action four are from people that think I wanna be messing with my settings all day long. I want to set and forget, especially being new to vlogging.

    That is what I needed. Thank you. You are the first person on YT explaining action camera settings who understands that action cameras work in constantly changing light conditions, so it must adjust itself automatically. The rest of the people recommend the same set of fixed exposure settings for every situation for some reason.

    Great you‘ve mentioned that Stabilization requires higher shutter speeds. There is one thought I would add: People in „PAL countries“ tend to use 25fps instead of 30fps. Unless they don‘t want to publish in TV 30fps or 60fps is also more reasonable here, because most of the cell phone or computer displays have a refresh rate of 60fps, so 25fps material will be frame converted when displayed there, which adds additional stutter.

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens

    Default sharpness gives best detail with the limited coding on action cameras. You have a narrow range so make it as good as possible in camera instead of manipulating afterwards.

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  7 месяцев назад

      Hello. Yes the camera isn't overboard with default sharpness so it's not a problem. The benefit of doing it in post is that you can do it in post to whatever the value you like. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

Either while doing vids/vlogs and also taking some shots of still photos. Or the differences of resolutions like the Before & After. The thing is, most of us does not know how the videos look like. Out of curiosity why 50fps over 60fps, does shooting in 60fps not give the cinematic look as well?

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hello. In Europe, we have the PAL standard that defines the broadcast frame rates 25, 50, 100... This is because the electric curent here oscilates with 50Hz, so this means that there is no flickering of lights in the video.
      The "cinematic" frame rate used in the movies is 23.97fps due to historical reasons, so for us in Europe, it would be 25fps. And that's it. 50 or 60fps playback will not give you a classical film look.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

      Hello. Maybe your TV doesn't support HEVC codec. Try the H.264. Also, 4k and 60fps could be a problem for a TV that isn't 4k.
      For editing, I would recommend DaVinci resolve Studio. There is also a free beta version, so first try that. It doesn't support 10bit input videos, but it's good for starting out. 10bit is only for D-logM and color grading.

      Hello. The 180deg shutter rule should be followed if the camera is not moving. For action shots use a faster shutter speed.
      The frame rate should be constant. Could it be that your PC can't playback a fast frame rate video? Video players typical have problems if it's faster then 50/60fps. You need an editing software to slow down the video. You can try Davinci resolve. There is a free version called Beta.

    I notice on your action 4 you can change the output codec from HEVC to H264. On my action 4 which I just purchased and upgraded the firmware to the latest, that setting box is greyed out so I cannot change the codec. It outputs in HEVC H265, which would be fine for me, I prefer it but I get very choppy playback on the computer after uploading the clips from the camera. Once edited and encoded they are fine. Curious why my camera disables that setting. Maybe the latest firmware is removing the option to change that?

That said I'd like to keep it in HEVC H265 as it is as good quality but much less in file size, so I'll explore how to resolve the choppy play on clips before editing and encoding. Likely I need a better player. I'm using Linux Mint OS.

    Hi there! I'm a complete noob here, and I hope you don't mind me asking a bunch of questions 🙂 . I plan to use the OA4 to record my road bike rides on a chest mount. Also, I'd be moving fast, and I ride during both day and night time, in and out of the city.
    What would be the optimal settings for both if I want to get clear captures of license plates, etc., and some short clips / vlogging here and there?
    I'm currently considering using 30 and/or 60 fps during daytime, and I will probably stick with 30 during night time. I'd only do some minimal processing like color grading via DJI's Lightcut app.
    Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      Hello. In this case set the camera to normal colours and h.264, maybe set the sharpness to -1. Limit the shutter speed to 1/100-1/8000s and ISO 100-3200. Use 4k 4:3 so that you can reframe in post. I would use auto white balance because the camera has a dedicated colour sensor and it does a good job.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens Just a follow-up, if I were to bump the ISO limit to 3200 (I'm currently at 100-1600), should I increase the noise reduction too?
      As for daytime recording, will you go for 30 or 60fps? I think 30 gives a sense of speed, but may not capture license plates as clearly as a 60 would. 60 is definitely smoother, but sometimes it seems unnatural to me. Is it also ok for the shutter speed for 60fps to be as slow as 1/100? I could only set the minimum value to 1/100 or 1/200.
      I really appreciate your help here 🙂

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  10 месяцев назад +1

      Too much noise reduction makes the video look very digital. Give it a try first.
      You can shoot 60fps and then play the video back on a 30fps timeline with no slowing down. It will look like a 30fps video. This way you're safe and can decide after the video is recorded.
      Set the min shutter speed to 1/200s. That's also what dji recommends for good stabilisation.
      Cheers!

The main activities I will performing are DYI projects around the house as and blogging when out and about on the car and to the stores. Can you help me confirm if I can use HEVC normal 10-bit color and not have to color grade? or is color grading a must using this configuration of HEVC? Which type of codec am I off better using? As of now my normal video editing process is capture with iPhone and then editing in Camtasia or Capcut with no color grading involved (I haven't gotten to that point of grading or luts).

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hello. If you don't plan to color grade, then avoid 10-bit colors. Also the HEVC is not supported by all devices and it doesn't really affect the video quality. Just the compression. I would go with H.264 and Normal colors, if you want to get videos strait out of the camera. Also keep in mind that this is an action camera and it does not have auto focus. The minimal focus distance is a good meter away from the camera so avoid any closeup shots. A smartphone is better for that.

If the camera will be shaking a lot, then set the shutter speed range to 200-8000s. You can use the 4k @25fps for a more "cinematic" look, but 50fps is, I think, better for a more smooth video. Also, you don't need any motion blur if you use 50fps.

This seldom happen with the Rocksteady turned on. Are there other settings that should I check/change?
    Sharpness = -1
    Noise reduc = -1

      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  9 месяцев назад

      Hello! The flickering is a result of too slow shutter speed ==> motion blur. As the camera shakes it records the motion blur (even with 1/100s) and then when the video is stabilised, it looks like flickering. Best practise for action/shaking shots is to limit the shutter speed minimum to 1/200s. This way you don't get this problem.
      Gyroflow looks better then RockStady because it uses the motion data and makes the stabilisation more averaged out but it doesn't solve the flickering. Only a fast shutter speed does that.
      I hope this helps ;)

      If you live in the USA, then 24, 30, 60 and 120fps applies. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

    It's funny everyone says D-LOG provides the most dynamic range. The dynamic range on normal is way better and means you don't need to grade. Every example I've seen side-by-side, Normal always looks better. I imagine normal is using some HDR, as standard.

      Hello. Yes, after the firmware update the Normal colors do look wey better. Before these was a 1.5stop dynamic range increase with D-log M, but now...? D-log M is still necesary if you want to grade the video youreself.

      The problem I see is that choosing D-log mode will benefit when the ISO is lowered a lot compared to normal color mode. You can test it in the same scene with manual mode to see the ISO

    What about using ND filters for some motion blur for a motorcycle riding video?

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  5 месяцев назад

      Ha! That's the paradox. If you want motion blur, then shaking the camera is out of the question. The videos you see on-line where things look clear but have motion blur, well that's added in post. Just make sure you don't shake the camera. Also in case of NDs you should manually expose because action cameras will rather raise the ISO then slow down the shutter speed so auto exposure is not good. You can also fix the ISO to 100 for instance. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

    if i shot 4k 25 fps (for night shots)how i can set the shutter speed so i can have motion blur(rule of 180)and avoid ghosting or jittering?1/100s shutter speed will be good?i want to ''help'' as much as i can the camera to shoot better night shots(without noise or ghosting) and see better at night.i dont raise the iso more than 800 because i dont want ''noise''.thanks

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  10 месяцев назад

      Hello. The minimum shutter speed should be 1/100s but even better 1/200s. In this case the ISO will have to be 1600 or more. Max 3200. 180deg shutter rule will always give you ghosting because it sets the shutter speed to 1/50s for 25fps and that is too slow for a moving camera. Ghosting is a result of motion blur captured when the camera is moveig/shaking and the video is stabilised the after so you don't see the shaking but you see the ghosting.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!
