If you are first time tractor owner, there is a lot to learn very quickly as you get used to operating your new tractor. The channel has welcomed lots of first time tractor owners recently and I thought it may be useful to pass long some advice and tips which I have learned along the way. I hope it is helpful. Morning Herb Caldwell here from Delaware, one tip I would like to share as well for new tractor owners as a rule of thumb is until you get more familiar with your tractor set up as a guide is L-loader. M- mower & H- highway hope this helps.

I wish I would have known all these things when I got my first tractor. I learned several of these things the hard way, just like you! And I have been lucky too, sometimes ignorance is bliss! I don't remember where I heard this but on your transmission an easy way to remember which gear to use is H is for Highway, M is for Mow, and L is for Loader. Another great video, GP! Cheers!

Great video - thanks ! I've had my 2601 for about 3 years. One of the best things I've done is to add 3" wheel spacers. Really increases stability. Huge improvement.

Hi Gordy, thanks for the informative video. I had the pin on the loader fall out and I’ve heard from other people that it happened to and did damage to the tractor. I was lucky as I saw it and stooped and put the pin back in the large hole that holds the pin is the problem for the 3/8 shaft. So what I did was go the a Fleet Farm store and bought 2 shaft collars 1/2” thick 1” diameter with a 7/16” hole and put it on the bottom of the sliding handle and tightened the set screw. Now the loader is secure and the cost was less then $2.00 a piece. Wayne from Wisconsin

Sweet! A BX 2680 is a great piece of equipment. I have a BX 2670 and it has been flawless for snow removal, grass cutting and moving firewood for the last 5 years. Congrats to your brother!

Great video for new owners. I even learned something I didn't know about the seat safety switch. I haven't tried it on my L2501, but I assume it's the same as your B2601. That's a handy feature that's NOT mentioned in the manual. And you're right about watching when turning/maneuvering tractor & implements. Especially brush hog-type cutters. I have a 60" Land Pride on my L2501 and it hangs way out there. Had a couple close calls turning around. Gotta pay attention to your surroundings and make sure there are no animals/people in the vicinity that could be injured by flying debris by a rotary cutter, tiller, chipper, etc. Safety is #1. Hope you and your family had a great Xmas and New Year. I'm looking forward to more great vids. And thanks for bringing back the original lead-in with the coffee, LOL.

Happy New Year GP from Nova Scotia. There was some great info in this video. I'm like you, as I recently bought my first tractor (it's Green ) and I am always curious as to what my machine will do. Most channels assume that you are a seasoned professional and skip over the basic stuff. But you always take the time to explain things in an easy to understand way. (Kubota should refer new tractor owners to your videos ) I'm liking this channel more every video and have gone back and watched all your videos and picked up some great ideas. Great video, lots of valuable info that newbies need to know and maybe some seasoned veterans might forget over time. I myself am pretty new to this, my place of work just got me a new Kubota LX 3310 with cab, blower, loader, and soon to arrive, in March a backhoe. This tractor is pretty advanced compared to the tractors of old and requires a lot more attention than they did.
Keep up the good work, I have watched several of your vids and enjoy them all, very professional and your attitude is the best!

In all the years of owning my two tractors I have never noticed them burning any oil. But... I still check the oil level EVERY TIME prior to operating the machine.
I don’t think you need to check the oil every time you use it. Oil does not evaporate. However if you are into checking then that is fine.
If I’m using a machine for a few days in a row I’ll check the fluids at the start, over the next few days I don’t worry about it but I’ll visually check the machine each morning. Personally I’ll probably check the coolant more than the oil as I’m more paranoid about the engine overheating and blowing a head gasket.

Great tips for the first time tractor owner. I like the one with the swing of implements front and rear. That is something that a commercial driver learns when driving large vehicles.

You truly do understand the tractor's usability and limitations, you did a great job explaining them. Like you mentioned the manual has most of this information in them. It really takes time using the tractor to fully understand all the features these machines have to offer. This video will be a good one to revisit time to time to remind us of the safety messages that are in it.

I love watching your vids since I'm a new tractor owner myself. In June I got a new to me John Deere 955 compact tractor. I've learned a lot since I got it and there's still more to learn for sure. I wish I would've gotten this years ago since its already saved me a bunch of work. As an added bonus my 3 yr old daughter likes it to. Keep up the good work.

GP. My tractor seat was a little different than yours. I had to rewire it. I bought an Emergency Stop Switch and mount that near my rear chipper. I run the cable from it to under my seat to disable the seat switch like others have done. This provides additional safety when using the chipper and also a good reminder that the seat safety switch is disabled.
Another good safety tip you previously shown was to use something other than your hand such as a paper strip or cardboard when checking for hydraulic leaks. Jim

I had to put some tape on my seat switch because I have to occasionally stand up slightly to see the tips of my forks over the hood which causes the tractor to shut down. I’m not crazy about over-riding safety switches but sometimes you have to do what you have to do!
I have had my Kubota L4400hst for about 15 years. You gave good explinations I learned something watching your video. How to keep the pto engauged when you are not on the seat. I knew very little when I baught my tractor.
Good info, thanks for the refresher. That Kubota camouflage jacket is pretty sporty GP. I'm surprised your brother is staying in Canada for retirement. All the others come to Florida. We have more Canadians than Canada. We get two types, French Canadians and American Canadians. Either in big diesel pushers or 5th wheels.

Gordon I enjoy your channel. My family has always been in farming. So I grew up with tractors. I learned to drive on an old Farmall. I just bought a Kubota B2410. It is their Manual transmission compact tractor. Old habits die hard. I just like the manual transmission. Anyway, I do use a chipper with it. But unlike the B2610, there seems to be no tricks to running the rear pto off of the seat. I asked my Kubota guy. But they are very cautious about side stepping the safety features. The way I have worked around this is by tying the seat down when I am off of it. I use a stiff wire as a hook from the hazard sign mount on the back of the seat to the hitch in the rear. I do put the selector in N eutral also. I tried it the way you describe in this video, but with the clutch down, as soon as I engage the pto, there is a loud beep and the engine dies.
Btw....when I watch your videos with your Kubota I always say "He is having a ball with that tractor!"

Congrats to your brother in his new retirement !! Nice piece of property he has there. Maybe you can share a little of that fancy new coffee..... and just maybe he will let you sit on his new tractor a while. LOL. GP, a point to ponder, next time you begin to bog down on a hill, try letting off of the 'fwd' pedal. That will lower your ground speed and allow your engine speed to remain at rpm. A lot of times that will keep you from stopping mid task and shifting to a lower range then restarting uphill with a heavy load. Herb Caldwell stole my suggestion of L-Loader, M-Mower and H-Hiway....LOL. Awesome video sir.

@@GPOutdoors I think the 'thanks' rightfully belong to the chains. LOL. On the glow plugs, it varies to some extent, at least on larger equipment like the 65hp skidloader you see me use from time to time. It has a timer that is set through its onboard computer that automatically adjusts the length of time based on a temperature sensor and it engages automatically when the key is turned on one click. Above a certain temp, it doesn't engage the glow plugs. On moderately cold days it automatically engages for as little as 5 to 10 seconds and the colder it gets, the longer it will engage....and it is infinitely variable. Sometimes 14 seconds, sometimes 21 seconds etc. When the countdown (digital) timer hits zero you then turn the key further and engage the starter. Below zero F it will engage for 45 seconds. Once the engine is warmed up, it won't engage the glow plugs on a restart because of the now elevated block temperature.
It would be interesting to know if the larger Kubotas all have the manually engaged pre-heating system or if they have something similar to the automatically engaged plugs described above. Sorry, didn't mean to ramble on there GP....LOL

Thank you for all your videos. I just turned 70 and had purchased my first tractor last summer. Your videos are what made me decide to get a B2601. I watched a lot of videos on small tractors before deciding which one to get. I have 80 acres in northern Minnesota and needed something to do alit of work with. Everyone said to get a skid steer. Gord, Happy New Year to you and all your subscribers! Great overview video on tips and tricks, and your comment at the end about being careful with the additional length/width of attachments made me chuckle. In my case it wasn’t an issue with a rear attachment, but rather a situation with the front loader. We often spend quite a bit of time looking backward on a tractor - especially with a rear snow blower. Tractors have a sharp turning radius, and that front end loader sticks out quite a way, which means it swings a large arc! On a recent occasion I managed to test that arc by knocking a sliver of wood off the trim around one of my garage doors. I am fortunate that it didn’t destroy the whole trim piece - or worse, the siding itself - but it was a very good lesson in remembering the length of the tractor on both ends LOL!!
Two other tips I might add...
One is that some tractor models, such as my L4060, have automatic timing on the glow plugs. They stay on only as long as required based on the ambient and engine temperature. Simply turn the key part way as you suggest, wait for the glow plug icon to turn off, and then start it up.
Secondly, another tip I have learned with hydraulic couplings is to connect the male/female ends of the implement’s hydraulic lines together after removing it from the tractor. Not only does this keep the couplings clean, but when you separate them prior to reinstalling to the tractor, it releases any pressure that may have built up in the implement lines, which often happens if the weather is warmer when you put it on than it was when you took it off. I have never had an issue since doing this.
And finally I will reinforce one of your first comments: your tractor and implement manuals are indeed your friends! Read them thoroughly and refer to them regularly. It’s actually pretty good bedtime reading if you can’t find time during the day ... but be prepared for silly comments from your better half!

Great info to know and probably very handy. Your comment about the garage trim made me laugh. Next time you see me around Guy's wood shed, take a close look at the siding on the corners of the building. LOL. All the best to you too good sir!
I completely agree about the RPM speed on the 2601. It is happy between 1800 and 2200 RPM. Below that and the transmission whines badly during movement as there isn’t enough flow for it to work well. Above 2200 and the engine gets loud, it sings nicely at 2000. There is very little pressure difference through the RPM range with these small machines, Messicks does a great demonstration of it.

One item of note, (and I know Mr. GP is aware of this) pertaining to the area of the 2-foot brake pedals, they should be locked together always, unless you are doing some particular maneuvering.
If they are not, and you are operating the tractor at a particularly fast ground speed, and you press either brake pedal, and they are not locked together, you will immediately make a sharp turn left or right, depending how much pressure you are applying to which brake pedal.
This will most likely cause the tractor to roll over.

this was very helpful. I recently purchased a new JD 1025R and your hints came in real handy. especially hydraulic line removal. Also comments about rear ballast. I think I can use my box scraper as a form of ballast when I'm using the front end loader. Great Job,

I've had my L3901 for 7 years and still learned a couple of helpful hints from your video. I finally found out about the running the joy stick through all positions with the key to accessory just a few years ago. Boy do I wish I'd known that 25 years ago with my big Case Comfort King 870. I'd spend an hour trying to reconnect my hydraulic couplers by pushing the ball in (Pioneer couplers) to release pressure and that's just plain dangerous... rubber gloves and goggles! Thanks for the tips.

A lot of what I have learned comes from the good folks subscribed to the channel offering advice and explanations in the comments and from my neighbour Guy. Honestly, I still learn new things weekly on it - and I am still pretty bad at trying to curl into a pile of gravel or dirt. LOL. Your brother bought the right tires for the snow (turf tires) r4 are the worse for snow as you and I both know when you go up hills. The tractor is the wrong color should be green LOL. I would have bought Kubota tractors but no close dealers by me Michigan. Happy new year and you have a very nice RUclips channel.
