    The main thing here is poison; it's HUGE in 1v1. That explains why the spiders and Kharibdys did so well.
    Kharibdys is getting to use all its tools (poison, damage, antilarge, etc) and isn't paying for things (high armor that is useless against AP monsters, range, speed, magic/fire damage, etc) that aren't useful.

      Poison isn't just huge in 1v1, take chosen GW for example. Chosen have 50 weapon damage per model. Let's assume 30 chosen are going to be fighting at any one time.
      Well 30 models * 50 WD is 1500 WD fighting at any one time; poisoning them brings that down to 1200 WD. Poison is just a really good debuff in all situations, and it got SOOOO much better when ranged units like skinks stopped friendly fire poisoning. Chameleons can be anywhere and poison the enemies key units on demand and even if they don't do that much damage against an armored target they still reduce it's damage by a significant amount

    • @doktarr
      @doktarr 3 года назад +12

    When it comes to units with breath weapons (or similar effects, like the Arcane Phoenix's firestorm) - I think it's probably worthwhile letting them have ONE shot of the ability. It's true that it's not going to be efficient letting these units just flit around waiting for the ability to recharge, but it's probably not unreasonable that they'll fire it off once before they get stuck in. Particularly those with breath weapons more oriented towards hitting single entities rather than splashing through units.

    So for the kharibdis, they actually buffed it some time ago. Think was a health buff and cost decrease. Mainly because you never see it, since dark elves dont need it with all their armor piercing missiles. Terrorghiest flies and can disengage, then charge at the back easily. Shaggoth is super fast, so easy to disengage, etc. Poison is super powerful against other strong monsters because it is a percentage.
    Personal note, I dont get why chaos gets nerfed so often when they are super out dated and weak. Bird lost missile resist, kholek got easier to shoot, hellcannon accuracy sucks, etc. Its just spawn and shaggoth rush at this point. Feels bad

      Kharibdis just isn't very good because of the roster it is in. It isn't that surprising that it does so well one on one, but it just doesn't fit in the roster. DE absolutely have zero issues slaughtering monsters with darkshards/shades. They also don't like wasting space and money on a really slow, overspecialized monster. A Hydra is pretty much always a better choice.
      If Kharibdis belongs to a faction like VC or Greenskins, or even Tomb Kings, it would be fantastic.

    Honestly, it's kind of weird that the Carnosaur is anti-large whilst the Stegadons are anti-infantry. Fact of the matter is, the horns on the Stegadon, which are obviously inspired by real world ceratopsid dinosaurs would have developed in order to fight opponents of the same size or larger than the Stegadon whereas the set of teeth and claws on the Carnosaur seems to be aimed towards smaller targets, rather than bigger ones.

    • @karatekan2182
      @karatekan2182 3 года назад +14

      Well, Ceratopsid dinosaurs were herbivores, so the whole "hunting large animals" vibe wouldn't work. And the Carnosaur looks more like a raptor really than a T-Rex, who did take on prey larger than themselves.

    • @walter1383

      I think the idea hear is that the Stegadon is a far better infantry bulldozer than the Carnosaur ever could be, while the Carnosaur specifically gets an anti large bonus do to it's habit of killing creatures like the Stegadon.

    • @otzitheiceman91

      The lore implies that carnosaurs have a big advantage over stegadons in a fight, and drove Lustria's dragons to extinction by ambushing them in their caves. It's a bit more vicious than a real life T-rex.

    • @Dejawolfs
      @Dejawolfs 3 года назад +2

      as far as the real-world dinos go.. the T-rex hunted triceratops. we know this for a fact, since triceratops has bitemarks from T-rex which have healed. then again the triceratops has specifically evolved to fight off the T-rex as well... sooo.. it's complicated i guess IRL they would both be both anti-large and anti-infantry. in any case, real life T-rex would have strong attack, high speed, low defence weak armor. Triceratops would have medium attack, medium speed, strong defence strong armor. T-rex skin would not be tough, since it wouldn't have to be, and it would need enough speed to chase down the triceratops. if you take it further tho.. IRL, you only need 1 bullet from a 12.7mm elephant gun to take down an elephant. but you need to hit either it's heart or it's brain. before elephant guns, the preferred ways to fight off elephant were either javelins or ballistas. another way was to cut off it's trunk and drive it mad with pain, and trample friendly troops. but other than that, an elephant would absolutely decimate friendly ranks. a stegadon would likely be even more devastating, there would be no trunk to cut off. instead there would be a heavily armoured low-slung head designed to resist the crushing jaws of one of the fiercest predators in lustria. a triceratops skull weighs about as much as a medium size car. stegadon probably the same. it could kill you by laying it's head on top of you. at full speed it would be an unstoppable plow.

      I think most vampire units are underwhelming when used in a 1 on 1 fight(that gets amplified when the non VC unit has fear or terror since the undead innate fear/terror wont work) since they are balanced around the magic.
      For the terrorgheist you can heal it quick with invocation and The Curse of Undeath buff the speed and melee attack with Vanhel's Danse Macabre
      and Okkam's mindrazor from shadows. So healing or 24 MA +speed for charges or just 40% damage on a largely AP unit. Or just fly off a bit and regen both hp and vigor to get armour back, oh and corpse carts.
      So potential is there due to how the faction works but that wont show in a test like this.

    Keep in mind that melee in this game is -extremely- RNG-heavy, especially in duels like this. You'd need a really big sample size to account for that. If you have a 50 melee attack monster attacking a 40 melee attack monster, every individual attack has a 50% hit chance!

    • @doktarr
      @doktarr 3 года назад +7

      Sure, but over the course of a combat, there will be a couple dozen attack attempts, which brings that 50/50 hit chance into a nice binomial distribution with a big center lobe.
      Even then, Zerk is doing the combat 5 times in each battle, and if it's not a 5-0 or 4-1 result, he re-runs it to get more data. He's doing what's needed to average the RNG effects out.

    well the point I think is that you can group 3 +ogre shagoths to take out one phoenix guard unit whereas you ll probably have an issue doing that with a charybdis or a queen due to their size. Also for the same reason and the lack of stuns in their attacks those units may suffer more health loss in such a matchup. Sagoths have half the size of a necrosphyx so it is much easier to maneuver around. After all those single entities really shine when stacked into groups... That being said in a campaign most of those units will never meet each other.

      Well... There's monsters that are anti-large because they are good for fighting monsters and there's monsters that are anti-large because they are good for fighting cav, and the Terrorgheist is the latter. In the lore, it's screams can be used to make even bretonnian warhorses panic and horses are also one of its primary food sources (well, in life, that is. Once they are undead, they probably mostly run on dark magic, just like anything else).

  • @Fordmister

    I Think its worth pointing out that the Kharybdys is so cheap as its got two glaring weaknesses that dont show up in this comp and one big strengths that really helps it. For starters even after its recent buff its still only got 65 armour is fairly slow and struggles to push through units. you can usually pin the fucker down and turn it into a pin cushion before it gets the monster duel it wants. That and its leadership debuff is supper strong in this kind of fight. when you just let two monsters fight it out towards the end the two are both usually low on health and leadership so that de buff can be enough to tip the scales and send its opponent running.

    Something you also have to consider in price cost is their speed and charge bonus as in a normal game you will be cycle charging these types of units thats where Dragon Ogres and carnos out perform kharibdyss and of course the terrorgheist is flying. Hellpit abominations are just fat meat shield so much hp and regen good dmg but in a straight up 1v1 they dont perform that well should be surrounded by clanrats or slaves.
    Edit terror gheist is vampire so is assumed to also get buffs from magic users more than other monsters would.

    I assume the prices are set in relation to the other units on the same faction more than "comparing big units between all factions"(probably both but perhaps mainly related to the roles they fill in that specific faction) also I don't think anyone wants or thinks it's needed to nerf the Kharibdyss as it was slighty buffed not that long ago for being bad and underused and it's still underused.(not that a unit being overused means a unit needs a nerf of course)

    Good fun as always.
    The Spider needs to be that good. Greenskins are showing their age in Campaign, and one could argue they only have a couple of units that compete well with their enemy equivalents. If she were nerfed, it would be interesting to wonder what if anything would be at the heart of a campaign Doom Stack for Greenskins.
    Expected the Kharibdyss to be strong as it's the unit arguably most purpose-built to kill enemy monsters (isn't it described as "monster killer" in game?). The vulnerabilities that are a problem for it in the normal interlocking factors of a complete battlefield don't come into play, so it's arguably the unit most being given its IDEAL environment (weakness to missiles, low armour, no regen etc don't matter).
    Terrorgheist's performance didn't surprise. It's never been all that impressive in melee, frankly, but the mobility and the fact it can bring terror to any part of a battlefield certainly can be. Even so, one can play a VC campaign and not bother with them.
    Chaos desperately needs the upgrade presumably TWWH3 will bring; their campaign. I don't bother playing them these days, same with the Beastmen (whose Tech tree plus "Moon" system are both absolute trash, especially the latter; where's the "fk off with your dreadful Moon penalty, I'll take the 'eclipse' option, thanks"?).
    I for one am kind of pissed at CA jamming more and more into the game for $$ with seemingly little regard to how drastically that can have changed the game play. I don't play PvP, and I don't WANT my campaign balance to get thrown to hell just because CA wants to add whatever 'LL pack' or sub-faction.
    Horde mechanics and Beastmen/Chaos REALLY need some intelligent attention.

  • @DrIBeast
    @DrIBeast 3 года назад

    Kharbidys does so well in this competition is the fact it's bonuses are designed almost exclusively to fight single monsters. It's bonuses also help it against other anti-large monsters specifically (posion damage) . The sphinx for example While fire and magic damage for example is super useful against war hydra. Other regen monsters. Most anti-large monsters don't have regen. Or physical resist.
    The sphinx's magic damage also allows it to take on many lords much more effectively. Many lords have physical resist ,but not magic resist. Example malekith.
    Kharbidys can win fights against cav. But is to slow to really be effective at that role. It is effective against monster infantry. As they are slower than cav.
    Dragon Ogre is faster more capable at wrecking heavy cav.

    SO question, When you have a Basic unit going up against a Regiment of Renown unit do you pump the basic unit up to level 9 to match the Regiment of renown unit, cuz if not its not really a fair comparison, as a level 9 unit will beat a level 1 unit of the same type every time, meaning the level 9 unit is better than base line from the get go and should be compared to another level 9 to eliminate the level difference bias as a factor and have to match up be purely on the differences between the units themselves.

    You can't look at points in a vacuum. Lots of things weren't factored in here, such as mobility. A Dragon Ogre Shaggoth has 76 speed, while a Kharibdyss has 46 speed.
    Another small point in favor of the Shaggoth, is that it's melee* animation isn't actually melee. The game counts it as a quasi-ranged attack, just with a very short range, which lets it land hits on fleeing/cycle charging units much easier than a unit like the Kharbidyss.
