Heh, ironically Dragon Princes were a very common blood knight proxy on the tabletop and GW had to specifically state in their tournament rules that repainting a model and painting vampire flags is not sufficient to count as conversion.
Dragon Prince models costing about half of what blood knights did probably played a role.

@@Stickyrolls123 I knew a guy that worked for the US side of GW- it was his dream job. Until he got into it for about a year or so. Some of the things I heard weren't shocking, but they did confirm a lot of suspicions held by the community. For instance, he conveyed that GW, will admit behind closed doors, to leaning toward writing new rules to sell new models. It makes sense (e.g. they're a company and need to turn a profit) but the consensus seems to be that the decision-makers don't substantially worry about how unbalanced new models/rules may be.
One of the shocking things for me was GW's attitude toward its Intellectual Property. They are pretty jealous with it and will pursue people/companies pretty aggressively over any perceived wrongdoing. Apparently, part of this has to do with British copyright laws that allow for I.P. to fall into the "wrong hands" if measures aren't routinely taken to legally challenge people over said copyrighted material (just look up the silly "Space Marine = GW property" lawsuit). Then part of it is the fact that, as one GW insider (different guy) put it- "it's a cadre of neckbeards who are overly protective of the Pinocchio they fashioned long ago." That would certainly explain some things such as some of the video games where GW got into various spats with development teams (e.g. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning) only for the end product to be lack-luster.
Or, a more infamous and subtle example- Starcraft and Warcraft. As one reddit user, feor1300 put it:
"...denied by all parties involved for legal reasons, but there's long been rumors that Warcraft started as a pitch for a WH Fantasy game that GW shot down after rejecting multiple elements of their story. But Blizzard had been overconfident and already started work, so they just changed enough to avoid lawsuits and plowed ahead with it as their own IP."

The test itself inherently ignores many of the advantages that make up the cost of many units. For example, sure the wild riders perform towards the bottom of their price bracket, but that's because you aren't supposed to charge them headfirst into heavy cavalry. They're much more mobile than any of the other cavalry on the list I think, being more akin to light cavalry than anything and their charge bonus and fear-causing are incredible for breaking enemy troops in hammer and anvil charges at a relatively reasonable price point. They can defeat pretty much any other cavalry unit that would actually be able to catch them in a real fight. That's why they cost a little more than their headfirst charge test might indicate.

Artillery would probably be the hardest to test in a "fair" way, as the previous comment mentionned.
I thought of it, and you would probably need a "TEST CRASH" unit to evalutate the real efficiency of the artillery instead of a arty VS arty.
But yes, Dawi would probably shine. The idea of Hellcannon or Queen Bess in a straight arty is a big game changer though.
If they respect the idea of "Best Cav" though, a unit would have to stay in place like the cavs after charge, mobile arty (Like the Empire) would not be able to move.

    • @UnreasonableOpinions
      @UnreasonableOpinions 4 года назад +2

That would be good. I'd run two tests, one against an infantry target and then one against another artillery unit. It's tricky, because direct-fire artillery would devastate in the piece-on-piece fight since it can actually destroy artillery pieces. Artillery more than anything else is hard to test, because direct and indirect fire have completely different merits; high-damage-small-blast cannon type has completely different goals from high-arc-large-blast mortar type. The range differential is also enormous, especially since moving pieces is too slow for evasion.
Queen Bess will win at killing units if that's the competition. If it's killing each other, the Black Lions are supreme because helblasters shread artillery in direct fire and can evade slow projectiles. Hellcannon is extremely effective at killing artillery due to range, semi-homing and unbreakable, but worse at killing regulars due to one model. And then there's Monstrous Artillery to mess it up for everyone.

Perhaps the general figures it will get more value out of an over cast, and do a unit that's in a group of 3 whist the blood knights are way out the back with artillery or off on the side or something. But yes, grave guard and tombs guard are weaker than say great swords because those armies come in mind with healing and are balanced as such. This goes doubly for necropolis knights. as they are get guaranteed arm wide heals which doesn't get used in this test.

My only two gripes with this awesome series:
    1. If units have special abilities you should absolutely use them in the test. Those abilities are baked into the unit, often compensated by lesser stats. Having built-in abilities make a unit stronger and more effective than its stat card by design, so that should factor into any test of who is the strongest.
    2. I'd love to see a version of this test that accounts for cost. Maybe not "who is the strongest" but "who is the most effective"? If five units of one unit costs enough less than five units of their opponent to afford one or more additional units, I'd love to see a contest where that lower cost is reflected by a numbers advantage to see how that balances out the contest.
Other than that, I love this series so far! Can't wait to see monstrous units :D

My favorite right now is Eltharion spaming mistwalker archers with a loremaster a noble two incendary mages (light and fire) two ballistas and two of his griffin knights with a dark elf being interigated so that they get AP ranged damage after a time. This pretty muchh covers all the bases. You can shower the enemies with arrows and keep them of the archers with some really powerfull melee units.

They had something like 70% Fire resistance, and the innate 25% Magic resistance of Dawi may have helped as well, because I waltzed right through 2 or 3 volleys to get into range of a Glade Guard unit, took zero losses, and flamed them all to death in 1 volley.

Good work, this is a MUCH more fair series of tests.
As for practical battle application, I agree with rank 9 here because it makes it fair but if this inspires anyone to take them into custom or quick matches at max rank your units up to rank 7, 5-6 is more practical for a unit you expect to do a lot of heavy lifting because they will gain chevrons in the battle. So they'll have the same late-game advantage as carrying in a rank 9 while still allowing you more funds to buy or rank up the rest of your army.
rank 5 brettonian men at arms are a significant upgrade in battle scenarios. As are upgraded goblins, TK Carrion, fel bats and every piece of artillery. Rule of thumb for melee is the cheaper the unit is, and the lower leadership, the more you're actually getting from a chevron. Although certain higher tier infantry gains significant benefits from chevrons- grave guard, tomb guard , longbeards rank 6 become psuedo ironbreakers.
Despite what you may have said in your videos, ranged units benefit heavily from chevrons. They increase their rate of fire, which is really important for getting more of those shots off in the limited amount of time you have to fire. Routing with ammunition in hand is a wasted percentage of the funds spent on that unit, as are missed shots. it also increases the range at which they will fire with 100% accuracy(meaning they will hit what they're aiming for within their calibration area) and the variance within (Calibration area, so roughly 5-20 yard spread of shots, decreasing in size with chevrons.) 150g in chevrons can make those cheap archers go from hitting 45% of their shots to 65%. WIth 90 archers in a formation, 22 ammunition, 20 damage per shot thats an addition of 7,920 damage before armor- which is almost exactly the health pool of a unit. For artillery, rank 3 minimum if you can afford it- it increases their accuracy by roughly 20% and reload speed around 10%(accuracy determined by both accuracy stat and calibration distance/area improvements). If you want proof of how effective this can be, take out 4 units of mortars-rank 0, 3, 6 and 9- and have them fire at 4 stationary infantry units. See the results. Then have them fire at 4 moving infantry units. Then 4 faster units. The applications to realistic battle scenarios will quickly become apparent. This can be done with any artillery in the game but I feel mortars show the discrepancy the easiest.

Yeah damage tags are weird. You run into some unexpected interactions when you have something with magic fire attacks like Imrik or Hexwraiths because if something has a 25% weakness to fire and a 50% magic resistance, then they take 25% less damage because the magic resistance is compensating for the fire weakness. So sometimes it's better to just have fire or magic or sometimes just normal physical resistance.
The Sisters of Avelorn are particularly interesting because they fire magical flaming arrows which means fire resistance, magic resistance, missile resistance, and ward save all reduce the damage they deal. That being said, the most common resistance is physical resistance so that's why they still crush other units since that's the one damage type they don't deal
